THE BUSINESS OF BUILDING BOYS

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL LETTER FROM

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Academy Community,

As we embark on San Antonio Academy’s 139th year, we are grateful for all of our current families, our faculty and staff, and, of course, our boys.

The Academy is built on a foundation of tradition, harkening back to our founding Headmaster, Dr. William Seeley, who said, “We want our boys to be known by their scholarship, leadership, and integrity.” To Dr. Seeley’s qualities, our current iteration of The Academy adds brotherhood.

Our motto, “Be honest. Be kind. Be the best you can be.” is an ever-present reminder of how we intend to conduct ourselves as we work to cultivate scholars, leaders, young men of integrity, and brothers on whom others can rely.

With our vision of “educating boys for life and preparing each young man to fulfill his noble purpose,” we continue our nearly century-and-a-half tradition of offering an exceptional education intentionally crafted for boys.

One of the greatest aspects of San Antonio Academy is the legacy and culture of philanthropy that has been established. Throughout its history, SAA has been blessed with generous benefactors who have seen the needs of the present day and laid the financial foundation to help sustain it for the future.

This year’s philanthropy report salutes those who have offered their time, talent, and treasure so that The Academy continues to be the exceptional educational institution it is today. In addition, we thank those who have had the vision and generosity to offer gifts that lay the groundwork for transformation that will enhance and sustain our ongoing traditions.

Blessings,

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

With gratitude, we honor these school leaders and thank them for their service to San Antonio Academy during the 2023–2024 school year.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS

Marvelous Bukari, Class of 2025

Q: A:

What subjects in school do you enjoy the most and why?

Math is my favorite subject because it involves problemsolving and reasoning, which are both skills that I will need once I’m an adult.

Q: A:

What do you think makes a good leader?

A good leader has to be able to listen, react, and be able to step back and let others into the spotlight.

Q: A:

What would you do if there was one last piece of cake at your lunch table and you and another person wanted it?

If there was one last piece of cake left and someone wanted it, I would give it to them because I’m now an 8th grader, so I have to set a good example for the kids around me.

Q: A:

Can you describe a time when you worked with others to achieve a goal?

Since I’m in robotics, my team and I are constantly finding ways around problems.

Robert Martin, Class of 2030

Q: A:

How do you feel when you learn something new in class?

I feel like I want to learn even more about that specific subject. It gets me excited about it and more curious, so I want to learn more.

Q: A:

Who do you look up to as a leader, and what makes them a good leader?

Philippe Jones, my buddy. He is really trustworthy and he is kind to me. He sets very good examples, and he achieves a lot of things.

Q: A:

What does it mean to be honest? Can you give me an example?

If I am doing my reading alone, I tell my mom the truth about how many pages I have read, even though no one was there to see it.

Q: A:

How do you show your friends that you care about them?

By being kind to them and being polite. Including new friends when you run into an old friend.

Barry Bradley Leaves Lasting Legacy

Mr. Barry Bradley joined The Academy team in 1977. In addition to teaching history, over his tenure, he has also taught science, served as Dean of Students and Dean of Faculty, and sponsored photography, science, and homework clubs. He has witnessed the school’s growth, including seeing dormitories transform into the Bondurant Library and Charlotte Hall classrooms, as well as the construction of Ellison Hall and a new gymnasium/fine arts building.

A student favorite for decades, he was always a stop for alumni visiting campus and frequently receives shout-outs in our weekly Alumni Monday presentations.

His personal highlights include “continuing the Geography Bee long after National Geographic stopped sponsoring it; seeing events like the first Fall Family Fair and Field Day evolve into what they are today; having 47 years of teaching fun and interesting students, getting to know supportive parents and families, and being able to call some of the best teachers anywhere my friends. It’s been a happy ride.”

We celebrate Mr. Bradley’s role in shaping the fabric of our school. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he has impacted and the fond memories he leaves behind.

On May 1, 2024, Mr. Bradley was honored at a retirement celebration of nearly 300 guests comprised of current and former Academy staff, families, and students. A special thank you to Academy parents Lauren Browning and Lisa Hutchens for chairing Mr. Bradley’s retirement celebration.

SAN ANTONIO ACADEMY WAYS TO

GIVE

To discuss how your gift can make the most significant impact on Academy Boys, contact Jennifer Colglazier, Chief Development Officer, jcolglazier@sa-academy.org, 210-733-7331 ext. 227.

Unrestricted Gifts (The Academy Fund)

Unrestricted gifts provide San Antonio Academy with the flexibility to address immediate needs and allocate resources where they are most impactful. These donations support everything from academic programs to campus maintenance, enabling us to respond to emerging opportunities and maintain excellence in all areas.

Restricted Gifts

Restricted gifts allow donors to direct their contributions toward a specific program or project that resonates with them personally. Whether it’s supporting the arts, STEM, athletics, or a specialized academic program, restricted gifts immediately impact areas that align with the donor’s interests.

Capital Contributions

Capital contributions are essential for funding large-scale projects, such as new buildings, facility upgrades, and technological enhancements. Donating to a capital campaign enables transformative improvements that enhance and prolong the campus experience for the San Antonio Academy community.

Bequests and Planned Gifts

By including San Antonio Academy in your estate plans, you ensure that your legacy lives on, helping shape future generations like The Academy did for you. Bequests and other planned gifts, such as charitable trusts and life insurance policies, allow for sustained support of The Academy’s mission, often providing long-term benefits that help secure our financial future.

Endowment

Contributions to the endowment create a lasting impact. The endowment fund generates investment income that supports San Antonio Academy year after year. Endowment gifts contribute to the school’s financial stability and help fund scholarships, academic and enrichment programs, and other priorities.

Corporate Matching Gifts

Many employers offer corporate matching gift programs, allowing you to double or triple your donation. By participating, your gift goes further, amplifying your impact on the students at San Antonio Academy. Check with your employer to see if they participate in a matching gift program.

Honorary and Memorial Gifts

Honorary and memorial gifts offer a meaningful way to pay tribute to a loved one or celebrate a special individual. These gifts support The Academy while creating a legacy of remembrance, honoring those who have made a difference in your life or the lives of others.

38TH ANNUAL FALL FAMILY FAIR

On Saturday, October 21, 2023, San Antonio Academy family and friends gathered on campus for the 38th Annual Fall Family Fair. “Monopoly” was the theme, attracting all fair and board game lovers alike.

The success of the Fall Family Fair is directly attributed to the generosity and support of SAA families and local businesses. The money raised from the Fall Family Fair is reinvested into programs that support our mission to “offer an exceptional education intentionally crafted for boys, Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.”

Thank you to the exceptional Fall Family Fair Committee for their enthusiasm and hard work. San Antonio Academy certainly benefits from your dedication and support.

NEARLY $550,000 RAISED

SAA’s Soirée: An Evening Under the Oak offered guests a magical evening under the canopy of the iconic Academy Oak Tree, followed by dinner and a live auction in a transformed McCombs Gymnasium, beautifully adorned with twinkling lights and trees to evoke an enchanting outdoor ambiance. More than 300 current and alumni families, faculty, and staff attended the event, chaired by CeCe and James Griffin, and Triana and Brandon Grossman ’92. Academy grandparent Rick Shaw served as emcee and auctioneer, energizing the crowd and driving a lively auction to help raise crucial funds for The Academy’s programs.

The “Paddles Up” fund-a-need effort raised more than $150,000 to fund a portion of the construction of Security Welcome Centers at SAA. The remaining funds help The Academy ensure that it can offer an exceptional educational experience.

Afterward, guests gathered in Ellison Hall to sing and dance to a performance from The Texases.

It was an unforgettable evening of good food, good company, and good entertainment, all for the good of our school. Thank you to the Evening Under the Oak committee for contributing your time, talent, and treasure to make it an unforgettable night.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

For parents at San Antonio Academy, volunteering on campus goes beyond just contributing their time. It is a gateway to forming deep connections and friendships that extend well beyond their children’s time at school.

Areas to get involved:

• Parents Club

• Special Event Committees

• The Academy Fund Committee

• Class Activities

PARENT EDUCATION SERIES: DR. MICHAEL GURIAN

San Antonio Academy welcomed hundreds of parents, grandparents, professionals, and interested community members to hear renowned author and psychologist Dr. Michael Gurian’s presentation, “The Mind of Boys,” in which he focused on how to nurture boys’ success in school and beyond. Drawing from more than three decades of research in brain science, education, and family dynamics, he provided a blend of humor, practical advice, and scientific rigor.

Dr. Gurian went on to provide strategies for supporting boys’ growth and learning. He emphasized the importance of understanding the

unique needs of boys and how institutions like SAA are leveraging brain science to create boy-friendly educational environments.

The Academy has been a Gurian Model School since 2017, which means SAA’s faculty has been trained and adheres to the educational concepts Michael Gurian has established for same-sex education.

With sincere gratitude, we extend our heartfelt thanks to The Womack Family Counseling Fund and the SAA Parents Club for making Dr. Gurian’s presentation possible.

GRANDPARENTS & GRANDFRIENDS:

LIGHTING UP SAA

Academy grandparents and grandfriends bring an extra sparkle to our campus with their boundless love and support. They go above and beyond, lending a hand with carpool, attending performances and games, sharing special moments at lunch and chapel, and contributing meaningfully to our school.

Throughout the school year at SAA, grandparents are invited to attend daily chapel or Grandparents’ Chapels, join their grandsons for lunch, and take part in Grandparents and Grandfriends Day.

SECURITY WELCOME CENTERS

Thanks to several generous donations from Academy grandparents, especially that of Nita and Jim Frank, as well as a gift from the Circle Bar Foundation and funds raised through An Evening Under the Oak’s Paddles Up, the construction of the Security Welcome Centers began in October 2024.

Stationed at the east and west entrances of campus, the Security Welcome Centers will ensure that SAA’s security personnel have enhanced supervision of school activities and improved management of campus access. These centers will symbolize The Academy’s commitment to providing each student with an exceptional environment that will lead to exceptional achievement.

ALUMNI

As we reflect on the 2023–2024 school year, we are profoundly grateful for the unwavering involvement of our alumni who continue to participate in our events, serve on our Alumni Association board, and provide support and guidance to our school and students. To our alumni, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your contributions strengthen the bond of brotherhood and help make The Academy the extraordinary place it is.

2024 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

YOUNG ALUMNUS AWARD

Jamey Steen, Class of 2003

The San Antonio Academy Alumni Association proudly presented the 2024 Young Alumnus Award to Mr. Jamey Steen, Class of 2003. Established in 2022, the Young Alumnus Award highlights extraordinary alumni aged 35 and younger who are rising stars and exemplify SAA’s core values of scholarship, leadership, integrity, and brotherhood.

An Academy “lifer,” Mr. Steen began his Academy experience as a pre-kindergartener and graduated in 2003. His introduction to SAA continued a rich family legacy, following his father, John T. Steen, Jr. ’63; his brother, John T. Steen III ’95; and his uncles, Martin W. Clement II ’63 and James H. Clement, Jr. ’68.

After graduating from Saint Mary’s Hall in 2007, Mr. Steen received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in 2011. His career has since spanned notable roles, including his current position as a partner at Buckhorn Resources, a mineral and royalty investment fund. Prior, he worked in business development at Black Stone Minerals Company, L.P. (NYSE: BSM), and was an investment banking analyst with GulfStar Group.

Beyond his professional success, Mr. Steen’s personal achievements reflect his commitment to leadership and service. After achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, he was further honored with the prestigious Outstanding Eagle Scout Award by the National Eagle Scout Association in 2022. He serves on the Houston Regional Board for UVA and is treasurer of the Board of Trustees for the San Jacinto Museum and Battlefield Association. He is also involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and serves on the five-member Texas Lottery Commission by gubernatorial appointment. A dedicated family man, he and his family are members of The Church of St. John the Divine.

Mr. Steen remains true to SAA’s values. A former Alumni Council board member, he has assisted The Academy with building alumni participation through the Class Agent program and has advised school leadership on alumni engagement and strategic investment among graduates. Reflecting on his years as an Academy student, Mr. Steen recalls his role as Battalion Public Affairs Officer, where he learned the true value of positivity. Mr. Steen is a stellar example of one going beyond expectation with each opportunity and, ultimately, making the world a better place one day at a time.
