The prayer direction from Jerusalem to Makkah was changed in this mosque and this Quranic command was revealed by Allah swt during prayer. The Prophet (SAW) and his companions changed the direction during their prayer. This Masjid is unique in a way as it has two Mihrabayn, one facing Jerusalem and the other one facing Makkah. Recently the prayer niche facing Jerusalem has been removed during the renovation of the mosque.

This mosque was constructed during the second year of Hijrah by Sawad bin Ghanam bin Kaab. The Quranic revelation regarding change of prayer direction was revealed on 15th Shaban when Prophet (SAW) was leading Muslims during the prayer of Dhuhr. As the incident of change of direction occurred in this mosque, that's why it was named Masjid
