The 10 Oldest Masjids Around the World Masjid Al-Aqsa: –

Masjid al-Aqsa has a rich history. It is intimately linked with Prophetic history, not of one but numerous prophets. It was first built by the Prophet Ibrahim (as) years after he built the Ka‘aba with his first son Ismail (as). Muslims have always been its true custodians despite illegal Zionist encroachments.

Masjid Al-Haram: –

The Grand Mosque of Mecca in western Saudi Arabia. Along with the Prophet Muhammad 's Mosque in Medina, it is one of the two holiest shrines in Islam, its spiritual center, and the focus of the hajj pilgrimage. A place of worship even before the time of Muhammad, the mosque is organized around the Kaaba, a pre-Islamic “House of God” founded by Abraham and Ishmael, toward which all Muslim prayer is directed.

Masjid An-Nabawi: –

Masjid al Nabawi is the second holiest mosque in Islam, the second largest mosque in the world after the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. It is resting place of the Prophet Muhammad. It was built by the Prophet himself, next to the house where he settled after his migration to Medina in 622 AD. It was an open air building with a raised platform for the reading of the Quran.

Mosque of Sanaa: –

Great Mosque of Sana’a, one of the oldest intact functioning mosques in the world. It was here that the Sana’a Manuscripts, which include the oldest known copy of the Qur’an, were discovered in 1972. The Great Mosque of Sana’a and the House of Manuscripts are part of the Old City of Sana’a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Uqba-bin-Nafe (may Allah be pleased with him) was a military general who began the Islamic conquest of the Maghreb, including present-day western Algeria and Morocco in North Africa. He used Kairouan as a base to mount operations.

Masjid al Quba: –

This was the Masjid Al-Quba, and it is considered the first mosque ever built, not counting the Kaaba, as well as the oldest in continual use. Although it pales in size, splendour and importance to the neighboring Masjid Al-Nabawi, it nevertheless has a very special place in the heart of Muslims because of its association with the Prophet Muhammad.

Distinguished by its domes and minarets, its anchors, its position in the horizon and the many pages of history; Imam Sadiq (as) narrated that “the mosque was first established by Adam when he was sent to this Earth”.

Jumma Mosque in Kilakarai is one of the oldest and built up with dravidian architecture. This mosque built in 17th centuary is a great example for the art of construction. The shape of this pallivasal (Mosque) is comparitively like the art of dravidian architecture.

Great Mosque of Xian: –

The Great Mosque of Xian is thought to have existed as early as the seventh century. The mosque that stands today, however, was begun in 1392 in the twenty-fifth year of the Ming Dynasty.
