The Alamo, Robert Rodriguez, and a Psychopathic Killer - An Interview with Actor JT Campos

Last summer I had the opportunity to sit down with actor JT Campos. In a world of followers, Campos is anything but that. We met in his hometown of Austin, Texas, sat on the beautiful patio of El Alma “the Soul” restaurant, and talked about his career.

Although Campos was born in Illinois, he’s spent most of his life in Texas. His father was a migrant farmer who moved to Illinois for work before Campos was born. The family then moved from Illinois to the Rio Grande Valley when he was young. His mother was from Mission, Texas and his father was from McAllen, Texas. Campos would go on to graduate from Mission High School. Campos’ father passed away December 3, 1983. Campos wore his father’s peach three-piece suit to the interview to commemorate his father’s birthday.

One of the first jobs Campos had was working in radio. He was a DJ for a local Tejano radio station KKLB 92.5. While working there, he cut a commercial for the movie The Alamo, which needed extras for the movie. He recalls seeing the commercial, reading it, and thinking about it. He would go on to be an extra in the movie. He recalls still working as a DJ at the time and going back to work at the studio to give a report about his experience on the set.

The set for The Alamo was in Dripping Springs, Texas, near Austin. It was at a place called Reimers Ranch, where they had built a huge facade of the Alamo. They’d hired over 500 extras for the movie. While on the

set, he realized that they didn’t treat extras that great and worked his way into doing stunts. The way he did it was interesting. He got a hold of the call sheet for the movie and analyzed it. A call sheet, in the movie industry, has all of the names and contact information for all of the people working on the movie on any particular day. Campos took it home and shared the call sheet with his brother.

One notable name on the call sheet was Phil Neilson. Neilson played Woody Harrelson’s father in the Oliver Stone movie Natural Born Killers. He noticed that Neilson was

now working as the Stunt Coordinator in the movie. Campos would go on to meet Neilson on the set, convincing him to let him and his brothers do some stunts. Campos and his brothers got the opportunity to do stunt work on the movie and didn’t waste it. When the time came for Campos to perform explosion stunts on the battlefield, he gave it everything he had. At one point, he was seriously injured from a stunt he did but didn’t tell anyone. Neilson, who had recognized that Campos had been injured, asked him if he was ok. He then gave Campos kudos, telling him “Way to lick your wounds in private,” Neilson told him.

Campos speaks very highly of his brothers. On the set of The Alamo, he got a chance to work with both of them. Campos is the oldest, his brother Chris is in the middle, and Jesse is the youngest. “The best thing my mother did for me is give me my brothers,” Campos states. Brothers Jesse Campos and Chris Campos were both in Queen of the South. Jesse has a prominent role, and his brother Chris has an acting part. His brother Jesse has played three or four characters in the series.

For Campos one of the positives about working on the movie was getting a chance to meet Oscar winning actor Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton was signing autographs on the set, and Campos recalls getting him a gift that he thought Thornton would appreciate. “He was a great guy,” Campos said. After The Alamo he went back to radio, but after having a taste of the movie industry, he knew he didn’t want an ordinary job anymore.

Campos was hired by Brand X for stunts in the Robert Rodriguez Dusk Till Dawn series. On the set there was talk about going to do stunt work for a new TV series Queen of the South. “They were going to need a lot of

Mexicans,” Campos states he was told. The hair and makeup people were also leaving to work on Queen of the South. Campos had developed a positive relationship with the hair and makeup people, and they recommended giving the Campos brothers a call. Russell Towery, the stunt coordinator for Queen of the South, liked Campos for the show, and he went in doing stunt work. Ben Lobato, one of the original writers for Queen of the South, liked Campos’ acting skills, and advised that if they got a Season Two, he would work him into the show and develop his character.

For those who haven’t seen the show, Campos’ character in Queen of the South is a pretty bad guy. He plays the ruthless psychopathic killer Boaz, who has worked his way up the ranks in the drug world. When asked about his inspiration for the character, he said he “picked up a lot growing up in south Texas.” He has seen a lot, he says “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” When asked if Campos had any problem playing a villain, he says that he “was trying to make him more complex” than just a bad guy. He thinks this is why the writers wanted to flush out his character a little more. There was a little bit of a push and pull with regard to the way the character was portrayed. The writers wanted crazy, not depth to the character. The crazy that Campos did show, they asked him to pull back. He’d explain “that’s the arc of my character.”

Campos felt that he had already learned a lot before Queen of the South thanks to his work with famed director Robert Rodriguez. For example, he learned about the use of different shots and focal lengths for scenes. He learned about “the wide, the medium, and the close.” Campos knew that if was to “get away with anything” off script, it would have to be in “the wide” shots. The wide “paints the everything picture.”

“Boaz Jimenez was a fun character for so many people, because everybody has a little bit of crazy in them and everybody wants to be bold.” The Boaz character was all this and then some — unapologetically ruthless. While he may not have actually been crazy, he certainly acted that way. When asked if any of Campos’ own personality came out in the Boaz character, he responded that sometimes there was a parallel, “but he is nowhere near the sadistic killer that Boaz was.”

During Queen of the South, Campos knew that “he had to be ready to come off the bench and go into the proverbial game and be ready to deliver.” When asked if his character had a negative effect on him personally, he advises that after Season 2 he was getting calls from people in south Texas telling him that they were proud of him. It gave him pause, because he was being celebrated as a drug dealer and a bad guy. That really wasn’t what he wanted. It was then that he made a point when speaking to students, to stay in school and get an education. He stressed the value of literacy and the science behind filmmaking.

When asked if he had any issues playing a villain, Campos states “I don’t mind being a bad guy.” He recalls accomplished actor Danny Trejo, who has played many bad guys, making a point years ago saying that if he was “going to be the bad guy, I’m going to be the best bad guy.” Campos knew that he was having a positive impact on his community regardless. He was doing a lot of community outreach. He wanted people to know that the Boaz character was nothing like the person that you see in life. At one point he was being told by the show not to do any humanitarian work because they still needed him to be the bad guy.

One of the popular characters on the Queen series was named King George, played by actor Ryan O’Nan. Boaz and King George were working partners. King George was a likable guy. However, for various reasons Boaz kills King George. He knew that his fans wouldn’t like this, so Campos ad libbed a little bit of emotional pain after he shot him. It’s very subtle and nuanced, but gives the viewer the impression that Boaz didn’t want to kill him, but he knew that he had to.

After the character was killed, Campos recalls an incident at a bar in Dallas where one King George fan wanted to fight Campos for killing King George. The guy wasn’t kidding. Campos apologized and reiterated that it’s just part of the fictional story. They ended up working it out over some tequila shots.

Campos’ career has led him to meet with some very talented people in the movie industry along the way. He had a chance to work with Pierce Brosnan when he appeared in the series The Son. He recalls that Brosnan was very charismatic and charming, and recalls him telling Campos “you die well” in a scene where Brosnan’s character kills Campos’ character. I would follow that guy anywhere, Campos states. Over the years, Campos also has had the pleasure of meeting the late Oscar winning Producer Jon Landau, as well as Oscar winning Director James Cameron, and doing a stunt scene with the iconic Oscar winning actor Robert De Niro in the Robert Rodriguez movie Machete.

Campos speaks very fondly of his experience on Queen of the South. He recalls everyone telling him that they love him on the show. “I was always nice to everybody” he states. “Because I came from the world being an extra.” “I was an extra on a battle-

field for six months” referring to the experience he gained on the movie The Alamo.

Throughout his career, while waiting for film work, Campos took various jobs. One of his jobs was with a security company. At the time, the security company was doing security on a movie set for Director Robert Rodriguez. Campos recalls being mesmerized by all the work they were doing. He recalls walking up and down the set and being mesmerized by Rodriguez’ mind and what he was sharing with people.

He found himself on the set of Machete and Machete Kills, both directed by Robert Rodriguez. Beth Sepko, the Casting Director, knew Campos’ ambition and hustle. He was initially employed to pass out flyers for extras at Fiesta Gardens in Austin, Texas. In the process, Campos would become an extra himself. Over the years he worked several times with Robert Rodriguez Campos who appears in Sin City, Sin City 2, Machete, Machete Kills, Spy Kids 4, and Lava Girl. Perhaps his most notable work was in the movie blockbuster Alita Battle Angel. He plays a warrior hunter in the bar fight scene and worked under the supervision of Stunt Coordinator Garret Warren. Alita Battle Angel would be one of Rodriguez most successful movies, grossing over $400 million worldwide. Rodriguez tends to hire people that he knows, Campos states. “It was a luxury and a pleasure working with him.”

Campos understands that the film and television industry is based out of Hollywood. He talks about the cutthroat nature of the business part of it and recalls in his earlier days being surrounded by “a bunch of people around him that he never should have.” “I had to pull the knife out of his back.”

Campos credits a lot of the movie industry in Texas to directors like Rodriguez. “They still have something in Texas, thanks to

filmmakers like Robert Linklater, Mike Judge, and Robert Rodriguez.”

These days Campos isn’t on his journey alone. He has people around him that keep him grounded and offer support. Campos speaks very highly of them. One of which is Jennifer Melissa Rangubphai. She does his administrative, marketing, and business development. Campos states “she is like my work wife.” She brings a lot of creative energy, he states. They met at an event where he was speaking, and she ended up buying some of his merchandise. She had already been following and watching him and knew he was somebody that was active in the community. She was working for the city of Austin at the time and wasn’t very satisfied with what she was doing.

Another person around him is Leola Layla Perez. They met on the set of The Alamo. She did hair and makeup on the set. She is also a “creative muse” for Campos. Leola has been with him since his early days and reminds him that he needs to get out of his own way. They are “kindred spirits” she states. “He dreams big, and it hurts her if she doesn’t see them come true.” Over the years, not only did Perez help him creatively, but she also knew the business. She was in industry, and she knew what movies were coming to town. She would find out who the Stunt Coordinator was.

Since Queen of the South, Campos was asked to work on Law and Order for Episodes 10 and 11 Season 3. He plays a villain Ruiz who he describes as a bad guy with a heart. Not all “bad” characters are bad, he says. “They usually have some good in them and were done wrong to make them want to go bad.” The Boaz character had this characteristic. “He was always good; there was nothing bad about him.” He’s going to get you before you get him though.

Campos also recently worked on Echoes of the Border down in the valley, as well as Velocity Kings Ride or Die. He’s been on several podcasts, music videos and launched his own Patreon patreon.com/soychingongfam

Campos knows that he has a checkered past, and knows that he still needs to get out of his own way. For Campos, fire is something that is sacred to him. He realized that he is an ember burning a long time ago. Many times, “I let my fire get out of control.” “I’ve burned myself and others.” “Other times, I let my fire burn the sh*t out of me.” He strives to show others how to honor their fire. “If I can keep doing what I’m doing, I’ll end up becoming a lighthouse somewhere.” “I’m still walking with my fire, and I have a little more left to go.”

Good and evil have always been a dilemma with me. Campos believes in “Fighting the good fight, no matter what.” “Even though all the odds are against me.”

Campos said that he is going to continue to act, working to be on screen every day. While he’s working on resurrecting the “next great villain” he also wants to be the good guy next door. “Whatever the industry has for me.” “If I can continue to embrace the bad guy, I will.” “It’s a guaranteed gig.” “If I can do stunts, I most definitely will.” Most importantly, Campos wants to be a pillar for the community, “standing next to my brothers and sisters.

“A Night In Old San Antonio” (NIOSA) announces dates and plans for 2026

“A Night In Old San Antonio®” (NIOSA®)—a four-night festival that celebrates the city’s diverse cultural legacy—will be held April 21- 24, 2026 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. nightly during Fiesta San Antonio®. It is held in La Villita Historic Arts Village in the heart of downtown.

Celebrating its 78th presentation in 2026, NIOSA is the top fundraiser for historic preservation in the United States—living up to its motto as a “Celebration for Preservation.” It is solely produced by and benefits The Conservation Society of San Antonio (one of the nation’s oldest and most active historic preservation organizations that celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024).

NIOSA will again run its Stocking Stuffers advance tickets discounts—possibly starting in late October—for the cheapest price available. Check NIOSA Facebook at www. facebook.com/NIOSA.NIOSA/

Through the magic of 155+ food, drink and atmosphere booths and entertainment stages; continuous live musical acts; decorations; souvenirs; and many dedicated volunteers, NIOSA brings the city’s heritage alive in its 14 cultural areas. San Antonians have consistently voted NIOSA as their favorite event; it was listed the #1 Fiesta event by San Antonio Current, which called it an “essential experience.”

SO MANY THINGS REMAIN THE SAME (for the better!):

NIOSA 2026 will occur again on the La Villita grounds—as it has for the past 77 years. NIOSA will still:

serve NIOSA favorites including Mr. Chicken, Maria’s Tortillas, Anticuchos, its signature German sausage, Bongo-K-Bobs, Shypoke Eggs, Beignets, Fried Mushrooms, Yak-i-Tori, Steer on a Stick, Gorditas and Fajitas de Pollo

Children 12 and under are admitted free with paying adult.

NIOSA occurs rain or shine; no refunds on tickets.

No restaurants produce or sell food at NIOSA. All proceeds benefit Conservation Society of San Antonio.

All of NIOSA—including the food booths—is run by an army of 10,000 volunteers, from the NIOSA chair Julie Terrill, NIOSA Vice Chairs and Treasurer to the booth chairs and booth workers. All booths are run by volunteers; many are second or third generations of a family to “man” a NIOSA booth. Volunteers come from all over the country to volunteer at NIOSA.

On average, NIOSA gives the Society over $1 million annually to fund the Society’s

preservation of historic properties and parks and awards scholarships, grants, and funds to researchers and private and commercial property owners for academic purposes and to maintain or restore historic properties: education programs such as the preservation seminars, scholarships, resource library and house museums.

NIOSA invests well over $1 million in our community by using local suppliers and paper goods. In addition, NIOSA usually pays nearly $1 million to lease La Villita; pay SAPD security; obtain health, fire and electrical permits: and donate to the La Villita restorations fund.

NIOSA pays homage to the city’s diverse culture with food, music and décor that transforms the village into 14 distinct areas: The Mission Trail area celebrates the early years with colorful façades of the San Antonio Missions. The Mexican Market area features great music and the very popular Anticuchos beef kabob. Find sizzling sausage and a German Oompa band in Sauerkraut Bend. Sample cuisine such as Pollo Ranchero, influenced by Northern Mexico in South of the Border. Colorful Spanish murals will surround you in Villa España.

PROCEEDS: From 2010 to 2020, more than $12 million was netted at NIOSA to enable The Conservation Society to continue its 99-

year mission of preserving historic buildings, objects, places and customs. The NIOSA committee presents the Society with profits to fund the Society’s preservation of historic properties and parks throughout the city and neighboring counties, as well as education and advocacy programs such as $1.6+ million (yes, $1.6+ million) in renovations and improvements to La Villita since 2000 and $2.5 million (yes $2.5 million) in building grants available to all San Antonians—and that is just a few examples.

The Society also produces and hosts NIOSITAs (private mini-NIOSAs) in La Villita’s historic plazas for conventions, meetings and any group that loves a fiesta to raise additional funds. The Conservation Society was the first organization in San Antonio to produce these outdoor festivals for private groups, establishing NIOSA as the premiere caterer of “fiestas.”

Situated at the peak of the NIOSA organizational volunteer pyramid, Terrill is assisted by Vice Chairs Erin Angle, Monica Reyes, Anita Gonzalez and Abbi Power, and DeAnna Keesee as NIOSA Treasurer.

NPower Texas Opens Applications for Spring 2026 Tech Fundamentals Program

Free tech training available for young adults, military veterans, and spouses

NPower Texas, the state arm of the national tech-focused nonprofit dedicated to advancing low-income communities through free technology training, is accepting applications for its 20-week online Spring 2026 Tech Fundamentals program.

The program is open to military veterans, military spouses, and young adults ages 18–26, offering them a pathway into the technology sector through hands-on learning, professional development and indus-

try-recognized certifications. With a proven track record, 80% of NPower graduates nationwide secure full-time jobs or continue their education, often achieving an average salary increase of 384%. Beyond technical training, students also receive social support and career-readiness support such as mock interviews, resume prep, and job placement assistance.

Transforming Untapped Potential into Tech Talent

Jonathan Pride, Vice President of Field Operations for NPower Texas and a U.S. Army veteran, emphasized the program’s impact across the state.

“Texas has so much untapped potential in the form of low-income young adults and veterans,” Pride said. “NPower Texas is one of the fastest-growing workforce training hubs in the country. We’re proud to be delivering life-changing training and opportunities for our students while helping employers connect with qualified tech talent to fill critical job openings and apprenticeships.”

Graduate Success Stories

Krivonne Evans, a U.S. Air Force veteran and recent NPower graduate, says the program became her launching pad to higher education.

“Through NPower they were really the stepping stone to getting me to where I wanted to be with my college education,” Evans said. “The part of the program I found the

most valuable was the mock interviews. Being able to directly meet with employers and hear from companies about what they are looking for was invaluable. NPower gave me the confidence, direction, and a clear vision for my future. It’s really been life changing.”

Tahjee Speight, both a young adult and U.S. Air Force veteran who graduated last year and now works as an IT technician, credits NPower with helping him make the transition from military service to civilian tech success.

“I always knew that I wanted to follow an IT career path, so to come across something that was both no cost and military friendly was a huge opportunity,” Speight said. “After recently separating from the military I felt like it was the right path to begin my jour-

ney in IT. Within two months of graduating from NPower I landed an IT role at a major financial lender. NPower didn’t just give me training—it gave me skills, it gave me mentorship, and it gave me the confidence to know that I could succeed.”

How to Apply

Applications for the Spring 2026 Tech Fundamentals class are now being accepted. Those interested can learn more and apply at NPower.org/techfundamentals.

Connecting Employers with Qualified Tech Talent

In addition to supporting students, NPower partners with area businesses and organizations to provide access to its growing pool of trained and certified graduates. Employers can connect with apprentices or new hires ready to fill positions in IT, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and other in-demand tech fields. Companies interested in gaining

access to this talent pipeline can learn more at npower.org/hire.

The Art of Connection: What Business Owners and Salespeople Can Learn From Each Other

1- For Business Owners: Understanding Where to Start

Running a business takes grit, passion, and countless hours of dedication—but even the most driven entrepreneurs can struggle when it comes to marketing. Many assume it’s as simple as posting online or running an ad, but real marketing starts with strategy: knowing your audience, defining your message, and setting clear goals. Without that direction, even the best ideas won’t stick.

2- Partner With a Company That Can Do It All

One of the most common mistakes business owners make is hiring multiple vendors for different needs. One handles social media, another does the website, and someone else manages ads. The result? A fragmented brand voice. A full-service marketing agency keeps everything under one roof—ensuring consistency, speed, and stronger results.

3- The Challenge of Time

Every business owner wears a dozen hats. Between operations, customers, and dayto-day demands, marketing often falls last. But it’s also what drives growth. The right agency takes that load off your shoulders so you can focus on what you do best—running your business.

4- Work With a Small Business That Has Time—And a Plan

Smaller agencies often deliver the most meaningful results because they take the time to know your brand and your goals. Execution is only half the job; analysis is the other. After three months, review your results using Google Analytics and make data-driven adjustments. Real marketing is a process of testing, learning, and improving.

5- Expect a Clear Plan and Evolving Timeline

Your marketing partner should give you a clear plan—what they’ll do and when. A good agency treats that plan as a living document, adjusting as data and opportunities arise. Communication builds trust and helps you know exactly what to expect from your investment.

6- Communication, Trust, and Partnership

Successful marketing starts with communication. If you’re too busy to meet regularly, assign a point person who can make decisions. Your team can only create strong campaigns if they have what they need— content, photos, and direction. Marketing works when trust works, and the best agencies operate as extensions of your business, not outsiders.

Sales Reps/Account Executives (multi-media)

7- Set Yourself Apart

Business owners are bombarded daily with calls, emails, and LinkedIn messages. To stand out, personalize your outreach. A lazy subject line like “Quick Question” gets deleted instantly. Be specific, be human, and show you’ve done your research before asking for their time.

8- Smart Selling Starts With Smart Research

Impress your prospect by referencing their business directly—mention something you liked on their website or a campaign they ran. Understand their market, their locations, and their audience. LinkedIn is a great tool, but use it to connect, not to spam. Ask questions, don’t pitch.

9- Leave Every Meeting With a Purpose

Every visit should end with understanding. Ask smart questions so you can build a customized package afterward. Reference industry insights—like, “I’ve been reading that mattresses are the profit driver for most furniture retailers. Does that hold true for you?” That shows initiative, curiosity, and credibility.

10- Don’t Chase Quick Sales—Build Real Solutions

Avoid rushing the sale. Keep your meetings short, focused, and valuable. Collect the information you need, then come back with a plan. When presenting, explain why your ideas—like social media, event marketing, or sponsorships—fit their business. Insight sells better than pressure.

11- Keep It Short—And Get to the Point

Business owners don’t have time for fluff. Skip thick color packets and generic decks. Start with: “Here’s what I know about your business, and here’s what I can do to grow it.” Get straight to the results. Colorful covers don’t sell ideas—clarity does.

12- Final Thoughts—The Evolution of Selling

Sometimes the best pitch is just a conversation. Offer one great idea—a giveaway, cross-promotion, or community tie-in—but only if you can actually execute it. Preparation beats promises every time.

When I started selling, all I had was a phone book, a pen, and determination. Today, salespeople have every tool imaginable— data, digital platforms, and AI. Yet the core of success hasn’t changed: preparation, communication, and trust.

To every business owner and salesperson reading this—I hope these insights help you build partnerships that last. I don’t claim to know it all after 35 years in this business, but I’ve seen what works. And what works is effort, integrity, and genuine connection.

Good luck—and here’s to your next successful partnership.

“Success in business isn’t about how much you sell—it’s about how much you understand.”

KLARISSA GAMBOA

1. Running your own business requires dedication, discipline, and passion. Which is most important to you?

Discipline. Passion may light the spark, but discipline keeps the fire burning. It’s about showing up every day, even when motivation wanes, and staying focused on long-term goals.

Sometimes having discipline is “doing what you hate to do but doing like you love it. “ -Mike Tyson

2. Have you run your own business before?

This is my first business venture, and it has been a rewarding journey of growth, resilience, and learning. I am currently co-own and help operate Elite Credit Repair alongside my husband Jorge Gamboa.

3. How did you get started in your career?

I started my career in the real estate industry over 12 years ago as an escrow assistant, where I gained foundational knowledge about the home-buying process. Shortly after, I discovered my passion for sales and marketing, which led me to work as a business development representative. From there, I transitioned into the mortgage industry, coordinating events and assisting with business development, which gave me invaluable insight into helping clients achieve their homeownership goals.

Later, I realized the critical role credit plays in these industries and began helping friends and family improve their credit scores. Seeing the positive impact, I could have on their lives inspired me to turn my expertise into a business.

Now, through Elite Credit Repair, I help even more people achieve financial freedom and

make their dream of purchasing a home a reality.

4. Do you have a career plan?

Yes, I plan to keep growing Elite Credit Repair by expanding our awesome team, making sure we maintain a healthy, positive culture, and providing the tools and resources our clients need to reach their dream homes and financial goals. I also want to mentor other women who are looking to start their own businesses.

5. What three pieces of advice would you give other women in business today?

•Embrace discipline—it’s the backbone of success

•Don’t be afraid to start small, progress compounds over time.

•Build a support network of like-minded individuals to share ideas and encouragement.

6. What is the most satisfying quality about your job?

Helping people achieve financial independence and seeing how a better credit score can open doors to opportunities they once thought were out of reach.

7. What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job?

Managing the emotional aspect of clients’ financial struggles while maintaining balance and focus is one of the greatest challenges. It’s difficult to see how financial hardships affect people’s lives, but it’s also deeply rewarding to guide them toward a brighter future.

I’ve been in their shoes—I made my fair share of financial mistakes, which led to bad credit. When it came time to purchase my dream home, my credit became a roadblock that forced me to buckle down and make major changes to accomplish my goals. That personal experience not only shaped my understanding of the process but also gave me the empathy and determination to help others overcome similar obstacles.

8. How do you think women today define success?

Success today is about having control over your time, creating meaningful impact, and balancing professional achievements with personal fulfillment. Whether balancing the demands of motherhood, excelling in a career, or pursuing personal passions, success looks different for every woman. At its core, it’s about thriving in all areas of life while making time for self-care—recognizing that rest, reflection, and personal well-being are just as important as professional and personal achievements.

9. What woman in history or your own family has been your greatest inspiration?

My mother has been my greatest inspiration. She instilled in me the value of hard work, perseverance, and putting faith in God during life’s challenges, which has guided me throughout my life and career. I’m also deeply grateful for the influence of my grandmother, Wuelita, who taught me the importance of family and unconditional love, and my Aunt Mary, Tía Mica. After becoming ill, Tía Mica gave her life to Christ and found her true purpose through her faith.

She always found ways to include God in the lives of everyone she loved, showing us the power of grace, love, and unwavering devotion.

I’ve also been inspired by Martha Stewart. After watching her recent documentary on Netflix, I was moved by her resilience, creativity, and ability to build an empire while overcoming personal and professional obstacles. Her story is a powerful reminder that success comes from embracing challenges, innovating, and staying true to your vision.

10. Do you think women feel intimidated in business?

At times, yes, but I believe women are redefining the narrative. By supporting and uplifting each other, we’re building confidence and proving that we belong in every room. It’s even more powerful when women come together. Individually, we are strong, but together, we can create the unthinkable—breaking barriers, driving change, and achieving incredible success. Collaboration among women isn’t just inspiring; it’s unstoppable.

11. How do women today achieve work-life balance?

It’s all about setting priorities and sticking to boundaries. For me, being intentional with my time and making sure I carve out time for my family, faith, and self-care helps me stay balanced. I also like to check in on all areas of my life using the Wheel of Life, which helps me see where I’m at and what might need more attention. It keeps me grounded and helps me adjust to keeping things more balanced and fulfilling.

12. How did you get where you are today, and who/what helped you along the way?

My journey to where I am today has been shaped by faith, discipline, and the unwavering support of my husband, family, and community. Their encouragement has been a driving force, especially during challenging times. My husband, in particular, is the most disciplined person I’ve ever known. He’s taught me invaluable lessons about the power of consistency and the importance of building a business with a strong sense of daily discipline. His goal-oriented mindset and remarkable achievements have been a huge inspiration. Together, we’ve reached incredible heights in a short period, constantly pushing ourselves to grow and never letting any challenge stand in our way. Growing together is incredibly important to both of us, and it’s this shared commitment to continuous improvement that has strengthened our relationship and our success.

13. What have you learned about leadership, entrepreneurship, and mentoring others?

I’ve learned that leadership, entrepreneurship, and mentoring are all about serving others. True leadership isn’t about control, it’s about empowering your team, inspiring them to reach their potential, and creating a vision they can believe in. It’s about setting the tone, modeling discipline, and holding yourself to the same standards you expect from others.

Entrepreneurship has taught me that success comes from resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering belief in your purpose. It’s about embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and staying focused on

long-term goals, even when the road gets tough. It’s also taught me the importance of balance—of being innovative while staying grounded in core values.

Mentoring others has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey. I’ve learned that mentorship is not about giving all the answers but guiding others to find their own. It’s about being a source of encouragement, helping people see their strengths, and showing them what’s possible with discipline and faith. Seeing others succeed because of your guidance is a reward unlike any other.

Ultimately, these lessons have shaped me into someone who leads with heart, purpose, and a commitment to lifting others as I climb.

14. What has been the role of luck in your success?

I believe blessings and hard work align to create opportunities. I’ve been fortunate, but I’ve also made intentional decisions to capitalize on those moments. Success isn’t something that’s simply gifted to people; it’s the result of consistent hard work and determination. Successful people don’t just get lucky—they make the decision to work hard and succeed on purpose.

15. Does your company do business online?

Yes, Elite Credit Repair operates online, allowing us to connect with clients across different regions and provide efficient, tailored services.

16. What are you looking to accomplish over the next 1, 3, 5, and 10 years?

•1 year: Build a stronger team and enhance our service offerings.

•3 years: Expand our business reach and launch financial literacy workshops and educate younger generations.

•5 years: Mentor aspiring entrepreneurs and diversify into other financial services.

•10 years: Leave a legacy of empowerment, creating lasting change in financial education.

17. Do you have any major achievements and significant milestones to date?

Yes, October 2024 was our best month in business, and I’m proud to have helped hundreds of clients improve their financial standing.

18. What would you say are your major strengths and current weaknesses? (If so, how do you plan to overcome your weaknesses?)

Strengths: Discipline, resilience, and a genuine desire to help others succeed. I excel at connecting with people, influencing others positively, and finding solutions to challenges. I always try to find the good in every situation. Another strength is my ability to stay focused and innovative. When the routine starts to feel repetitive, it pushes me to

think creatively and bring new ideas to the table.

Weakness: A challenge I face is I get bored easily, but I turn it into a strength by staying sharp, thinking big, and using it to find fresh ways to grow and improve.

19. What would you say are the top three skills women should have in business?

1.Emotional Intelligence (EQ): The ability to connect with others, read situations, and respond with empathy is essential. Strong emotional intelligence helps in building relationships, leading teams, and navigating challenges with confidence and grace.

2. Adaptability: In business, things rarely go exactly as planned. Women in business need to be flexible and open to change, ready to pivot strategies, and resilient in the face of obstacles. Adaptability ensures you can thrive in any situation and continue moving forward.

3. Discipline: Success doesn’t happen overnight. Discipline is crucial for staying consistent, managing time effectively, and following through on goals—even when motivation wanes. It’s the foundation of creating sustainable growth and achieving long-term success.

20. In your line of business, what motivates you?

In my line of business, what truly motivates me is the transformation I see in my clients’ lives. It’s not just about boosting credit

scores, it’s about helping people reclaim their confidence, realize their dreams, and provide stability for their families. Watching someone go from feeling stuck or overwhelmed to achieving goals they once thought were out of reach fills me with purpose.

I feel blessed to be part of a process that empowers people to believe in themselves again. Every time a client shares that they’ve bought their dream home, qualified for a loan, or taken a step toward financial freedom, I’m reminded why I do this. It’s about making a real difference in people’s lives, creating a ripple effect that positively impacts families and communities. That sense of purpose, paired with the opportunity to teach others about discipline and perseverance, is what fuels my passion every day.

21. What has been your most satisfying moment in your business career?

Celebrating clients who reach their dream of purchasing a home or financial milestones, it reminds me why I started this journey.

22. What would you like your ‘Women in Business’ legacy to be?

I want to be remembered as a woman who used her gifts to empower others, showing that success is possible through faith, discipline and a commitment to uplifting those around me. I also want people to remember me for my fun-loving spirit, always embracing life with enthusiasm and positive energy. There’s good in everything, you just have to find it.

Bullying, isn’t that a “Kid” Problem?

When the air turns crisp, leaves turn gold, and we reach for flannel shirts, cozy drinks, and comfort food, it feels like a season of renewal—a time to shed the old and embrace the new, much like the autumn harvest itself. Fall is a time of gathering: around feasts, fireplaces, and holiday tables. Yet, even in this season of warmth and connection, many adults quietly endure something far less cozy: bullying.

Most people believe that bullying is a social problem only faced by children in our society, but the reality is that adults suffer from bullying as well. Although adult bullying is more insidious, occurring via social media

forums, texting, group texting, and other forms of online cyberbullying, it can be extremely damaging to the victim’s life, family, friends, career, mental health, and peace. Even so, many do not know what exactly bullying is, who is often impacted, possible reasons for targeting a person or group of people, and what can be done to help diminish the problem of bullying.

Bullying is repeated, unwanted aggressive behavior by a person or group to assert power over a perceived weaker person. Often victims of bullying are those with disabilities, those who are viewed as different than the majority, those who may be of a

lower or higher socio-economic status, and often the LGBTQ+ community. Bullying can also originate from the green-eyed monster of envy. Envy of someone’s appearance, social status, socioeconomic status, education, and career. Adult bullying is often insidious, difficult to identify. Hence, the damaging effects of bullying continue to be prevalent in our communities across the U.S.

In fact, bullying is harmful to people’s mental health, self-esteem, quality of life, and overall happiness. One survey found that victims of bullying are negatively impacted as follows:

-71% suffer from stress

-70% experience anxiety/depression

-55% report a loss of confidence

-39% suffer from sleep loss, 26% have headaches and 22% experience muscle tension or pain

-19% reported a mental breakdown

-17% noted an inability to function day-today, i.e. calling in sick frequently Lastly, bullying can lead to severe depression, hopelessness, and even suicide.

San Antonio, Texas is no different than the larger macro society of the U.S. This is where the founder of the new non-profit, Halt the Hate, an adult anti-bullying non-profit organization steps in to affect positive social change. Alexandra Kreines president and founder of Halt the Hate which launched on November 7, 2024, has made it her mission to advance adult bullying awareness in the South Texas region.

Alexandra Kreines was inspired by her own personal experiences with bullying. When interviewed, Mrs. Kreines reported, “Adult bullying manifests in various forms, often involving power and control to cause harm, which may include intimidation, manipulation, persistent criticism, and humiliation. In severe cases, it can escalate into stalking

and harassment. Cyberbullying has also become increasingly common among adults. Adult bullying victims face potential for job loss, damaged relationships, or tarnished reputations.”

Halt the Hate’s mission extends beyond Mrs. Kreines’ personal experiences with bullying, in hopes of alleviating even a fraction of the pain that so many have endured. Halt the Hate’s mission, is an inspiring one of hope, kindness, and affecting positive change. Together we can begin to change bullying through awareness first and second something known as the “bystander effect.” Bullies are often seeking attention, popularity, notoriety in their bullying actions, so if someone speaks up against the bullying, it can often stop the bullying behavior.

As Alexandra Kreines stated, “Stopping

bullying starts with each of us doing our part—whether as individuals or as a community. For me, it’s about having open conversations, listening to those who are hurting, and offering support. When we see bullying happening, we need to speak up and show respect in everything we do. Teaching kindness, challenging stereotypes, and creating an inclusive environment are all ways we can make a difference. We also need to fight for stronger protections, support mental health resources, and keep online spaces safe for everyone. By doing all of this, we can create a world where bullying doesn’t have a place, and everyone feels seen and valued. Together, we can make real change.”

As the leading nonprofit mental health center in south Texas for children ages 3-17, Clarity Child Guidance Center has noticed for more than a decade that 90% of our patients have experienced trauma of some sort—whether it’s “Big T Trauma” like physical and/or sexual abuse, or “Little t trauma” such as lack of housing or food; neglect or verbal abuse; or emotional detachment.

Understanding how trauma affects the way a child develops is the first step to helping our kids. Trauma can have lasting effects in the body…and more specifically in the part of the brain where the automatic responses such as fight or flight reside. This internal alarm can be activated at any perceived sign of trouble and leaves kids feeling scared, angry, irritable, or even withdrawn. When the event is deeply distressing or disturbing and is difficult to cope with, it can cause feelings of helplessness. If trauma happens when kids are very young, they have no language to express what is happening. The feelings are there but the child cannot label them. This results in confusion and an inability to describe what happened and how it makes them feel.

That is a lot for a child of any age to process, so caretakers of children must give them a way to express their emotions and process their pain. When a child experiences trauma it can affect behavior and cause the child to respond to different situations in an exaggerated, highly emotional manner. This can occur years after the trauma occurred. It can impact a child’s functioning at school and the child can experience learning problems, including lower grades and suspension. Repeated trauma can affect the health of a child and result in longterm health problems such as diabetes. If trauma goes unrecognized and untreated it can impact the child as an adult and cause persistent behavioral problems and disrup-

tions in their lives such as loss of jobs and unstable destructive relationships, alcoholism, smoking and other addictions, chronic diseases, and attempted suicide.

As caregivers, how should we approach a child exhibiting these behaviors? Traditional parenting with reward and consequence can worsen the behaviors. The child’s behaviors or “acting out” is their way of communicating their distress and suffering. If we punish the child, it will worsen the distress and cause more suffering. We must look beyond the surface behaviors and try to gain an understanding of what the child is experiencing. If we offer comfort and temporarily remove expectations, this can de-escalate the behaviors, so the child is calmer and able to discuss the problem.

Adults need to look past the “wrong” behavior and try to get to the distress causing the negative behavior. This is not easy because the displayed behavior can be very disruptive and overwhelming for the parent. It is important to recognize the child is in distress by showing empathy and compassion; we need to get down to the root of how their child is feeling.

We can start by using a simple empathy statement such as “I see that you are having a hard time.” Remove expectations with statements like: “why don’t we forget about you changing your clothes right now and talk about what’s bothering you?” It is important to let the child know that their feelings are more important than the parental expectation at this moment. Take time and reassure the child that you are there to support and assist them. Watch your body language carefully; children are very sensitive to unspoken communication conveying frustration or impatience.

The need to give a consequence when a

child is acting out is very strong and it can be difficult to offer a child comfort when they are misbehaving. But using a trauma informed approach can make a major difference in managing the symptoms that result from trauma. This is so important that all members of the Clarity staff— both clinical and support staff, with strong support from the CEO—went through a long two-and-a-half-year process to obtain Level One certification in Trauma Informed Care; we are proud to announce the certification was just awarded in early May.

We are seeing lots of encouraging signs: parents, teens and children are less afraid to open up and get help, and are more engaged in treatment. One particularly helpful book is “The Explosive Child” by Ross Greene Ph.D.

Hi! My name is Julia Gillis, and I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Photography has been an interest of mine ever since I was a kid, but I truly started pursuing modeling about two years ago. In high school, I would do some test shoots here and there for fun with friends, and eventually I found a photographer through a family friend that I shot with regularly, and I absolutely loved every moment of it. There’s something beau-

tiful about bringing a photographer’s vision to life, becoming a piece of art once I step in front of their camera. Shortly after moving to San Antonio, I signed with Nelson Fashion Group (NFG). Last summer, I attended The Dallas Model & Expo with NFG, and it was such an amazing opportunity for my modeling career! I got to talk to dozens of high-end agencies from around the world and got a lot of helpful advice about the

modeling profession and its realities. From my experience at Expo, I ended up signing with HOP Models & Talent located in Atlanta, Georgia. As far as school goes, I’m currently enrolled in my third year at UTSA pursuing a psychology degree. My goals

for the future are to make a career in high fashion or fitness modeling, while also doing work for rehab centers through counseling and therapy. I’m super excited to keep working with my agencies and to see what my modeling career has in store for me!

As a retired Air Force Master Seargent, the veteran community is a focal point in my life. In 2021 I purchased four homes in Sant Antonio and use them to help house needy homeless veterans. I call it Hero’s Haven. We have since expanded with an additional house in my hometown of El Paso, Texas. At any given time there are upwards of 14 veterans living in our 5 homes. We measure our success not just by how many people come through our doors but by how many transition back to being positive members of community. It’s not easy but for those that are ready, Hero’s Haven provides a place they can belong to. Like the units they belong to in the military. Having a sense of “belonging’ is the secret sauce to our success. Through our doors walk the blessings of tomorrow. Hero’s Haven is a hand-up not a hand-out.

lieve, if the Lord blessed me with health (at whatever level), who am I to not put in the time and sweat to maintain it. I have many friends and family members who would do anything to walk or run again but they can’t. Who am I to stay idle. The most valuable gift God gives us is TIME. I shall not waste the gift of time.

Award Winning Texas

Texas Wines

It’s an exciting time for the Texas Wine Industry: of the 33 wines that received a Platinum medal from the 18th annual Sommelier Challenge International Wine and Spirits Competition, 16 came from Texas and we’re here to highlight some of the top award-winning wines in the Texas Hill Country.

K Estate (formerly Kuhlman Cellars) won Platinum for their 2023 Pinot Noir plus two gold medals for the 2022 Italian and the 2023 Estate Tempranillo. The 2023 Pinot Noir is best served slightly chilled, making it perfect for the lingering warm days. The palate is silky and elegant with a soft finish. A versatile food wine, this beauty pairs well with BBQ, bleu cheese-stuffed burger, and grilled pork tenderloin.

Invention Vineyards won a Platinum medal for the 2022 P2 as well as gold medals for the 2023 Imaginada, 2024 Mourvèdre Rosé, 2021 Sangiovese, and 2021 Soleluce. 2022 P2 is the opulent and opaque marriage of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot. Assertive aromas of dark chocolate, black currant, and sage dominate the nose, along with floral notes of lilac and violet. This full-bodied wine begs for a hearty beef stew or a slowcooked venison roast.

Heath Sparkling Wines, the first Texas brand solely dedicated to sparkling wines, won Platinum for both the 2022 Adoration and the 2022 Euphoria as well as Gold for the 2022 Ebullience. The 2022 Adoration is of the vineyard’s most popular sparklers. A brilliant pale salmon with a hint of copper in hue, this lovely rosé shows persistent, tiny beads and charming aromas of strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, and fresh-baked bread. First produced in 2013, the flagship 2022 Euphoria is a bright, pale yellow/gold with yeasty aromas of tangerine, orange peel, and freshly baked sourdough bread that led to a crisp, clean palate and a refined finish.

Heath Family Estate won Platinum for the 2021 Individualist as well as Gold for the 2021 Elitist and the 2021 Originalist. The 2021 Individualist is mostly Tannat (a grape that is well-suited to Texas) with a dense, dark ruby color and layered aromas of blackberry jam, cassis, fig, and cracked black peppercorn, accented by floral notes of violet and rose petal. This wine has a lengthy finish that promises a long life in the bottle.

Last but certainly not least, Grape Creek Vineyards won Platinum for the 2022 Invention plus Gold for the 2022 Rendezvous, 2022 Cabernet Trois, 2022 Bellissimo, and 2021 Mosaic. Petit Verdot, the dominant varietal in the 2022 Invention, has emerged

as a major player in the Texas wine industry. The 2022 Invention has dynamic aromas of black cherry, cassis, and fresh-cracked black pepper combined with floral notes of violet and lilac for a complex nose and sophisticated palate. Braised short ribs would be a great match with this cozy wine.

These are just a few of the magnificent wines offered on the beautiful Hwy 290 Wine Trail. What’s better than sipping a perfect glass of wine by a fire pit with a view of grapevines? Visit any of these vineyards and try these award-winning wines for yourself.

San Antonio, TX 78217

As we say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn, we often think of foods from our childhood. Foods that gave us warmth, security, and emotionally hugged us as we sat around the kitchen table with our family and friends. San Antonio’s rich Tex-Mex heritage weaves food and culture together, transforming our restaurants into vibrant showcases of tradition and innovation, establishing the city as a premier culinary destination in Texas. Many of these restaurants are family-owned and operated, often spanning generations, preserving cherished culinary traditions. Mama’s Café was established with this in mind.

Since 1973, the Lawton family has been a cornerstone of San Antonio’s culinary scene, with Mama’s Café as one of their five cherished establishments, alongside Cappy’s Restaurant, La Fonda on Main, Cappyccino’s, and Jungu House at the Japanese Tea Garden. Patriarch Cappy Lawton and his family have warmly welcomed generations of locals to their beloved family-run restaurants. With autumn’s arrival, Sandra and I sought a cozy spot to unwind and savor comfort food, choosing a restaurant that serves dishes brimming with warmth, authenticity, and nostalgic memories. Mama’s Café was such the place.

We selected two dinner time entrees which were found to be inspirational choices. We both recommend giving the Herb-roasted Chicken, with green beans infused with

bacon, home-made mashed potatoes and gravy. The chicken offered flavorful, juicy and tenderness at the same time, and had an irresistible aroma. Sandra took a leap of faith and paired the chicken with a Lavender Lemon Drop, which consisted of vodka, vanilla, honey and orange. The vanilla added the comforting sweetness, and the lavender created a great complex, but balanced flavor. The drink was surprisingly welcomed with the Herb-roasted chicken.

Our server, Stiles Curry recommended the Chicken Fried Steak since this is a customer favorite. I was a bit skeptical expecting an over-breaded chewy experience. The chicken fried steak batter was remarkably light as to with the American Wagyu steak, and one of the best chicken fried steaks I have eaten in San Antonio. The hand-made mashed potatoes and the vegetables were perfectly prepared by their chef staff Stephen and Lauren. Sandra and I were pleasantly surprised both meals were prepared and beautifully plated as should be the case in every restaurant. I do have to admit the Electric Jelly Fish Hazy IPA could not be explained as a pairing with the chicken fried steak but finished well as a comforting flavorful pale ale. I highly recommend it. Thanks to the friendly and excellent staff at Mama’s Café. We will be back soon.

The legendary County Line on the Hill turns 50 From Speak Easy to Gambling Hall to BBQ Heaven

On top of the third highest hill in Travis County at 6500 W. Bee Cave Road in Austin sits a building that is home to The County Line on the Hill Bar-B-Q restaurant. Long before the owners opened the first County Line there in June 1975, the history of this property—starting with the first building built in 1929—is as spectacular as the restaurant’s 20-mile view overlooking the Barton Creek River Valley, including Cedar Choppers, moonshine, illegal gambling, stag parties with supposedly naked women, a lodge for gambling, dining and drinking), event venue for private parties for UT frats and students, a honky-tonk, an Episcopal Church Sunday school and youth club; and a private home.

Fast forward to 1974 when Bruce Walcutt, Rick Goss and Ed Norton, the original owners of The County Line,

rented the building for $150/month. In June 1975, The County Line was formed— and is still owned—by Texans who love Texas; love its heritage and historical buildings; love BBQ; and are committed to running a restaurant based on four principles: -First: offer the highest quality smoked barbecue – ribs, brisket, sausage and chicken – with traditional sides of cole slaw, potato salad and beans.

-Second: provide these BBQ specialties in generous portions at reasonable prices.

-Next: employ college-age students to offer friendly table service with linens and bar service.

-Finally: feature an authentic location that celebrates the heritage of its surroundings community

Visitors to this County Line will see many remnants still remain, including the 20-mile view, the red cement floor, the moose mirror, the Cedar Crest Lodge stone building and most importantly, The County Line’s legendary BBQ.

To understand County Line’s tremendous success over the past 50 years, just look over checklists about what makes a restaurant successful; it’s like looking at the history of The County Line, as it is about to turn 50 this summer:

A strong restaurant concept? Check.

County Line management team is committed to the four principles listed above that they put in place 50 years ago.

Happy staff members? Check.

The average tenure of the GMs at their six restaurants is 34 years—with three of the six GMs having been there 40 years or more. Besides two present-day owners that have been with County Line since it opened, the top directors in the management team have been there 47, 45 and 41 years respectively. None of the past owners ever left the company; sadly, four of them are deceased.

Treat staff with respect, always. Check.

In County Line President and CEO Skeeter Miller states: “You treat them like family. You let them be a part of the decision

making process. Be it anything from a money-saving idea, to a better way to prepare something, to feedback on our customers’ wants and needs. If we did things the way we did them 50 years ago, we would no longer be in business. Our County Line team’s ideas, inventions to save time and labor, and feedback have been the inspiration for changes that sustain us today.”

Repeat customers. Check.

Check out these videos taken of repeat customers at County Line on the Hill.

Distinctive atmosphere. Check.

The County Line restaurants in Austin don’t have to try to replicate a historic look—they are historic. County Line on the Hill also has a 20-mile view still unencumbered by the surrounding population. County Line on the Lake’s seven acre facility sits on the shores of Bull Creek, right off Lake Austin where guests can arrive by boat or car. The interior ambience at each restaurant reflects the history surrounding each property, with an array of Central Texas trivia and trappings lining the walls, including a talking deer and moose at the Hill location. History of each location can be found here on County Line website.

Consistent menu. Check.

When you compare the menus from 1975 and 2025, ALL but six of the 1975 items are still featured on County Line menus, including:

-Large beef ribs slow-smoked over natural green oak

-Sausage made in the Texas Hill Country by German descendants with exclusive County Line recipe, and then smoked twice over natural hardwoods

-Rib Eye steak “that’ll send ya’ home cryin’”

-Traditional BBQ sides of cole slaw, potato salad, baked potatoes and beans

-Sauteed mushrooms appetizer

-Homemade bread

-Homemade ice cream and cheesecake

-Bloody Marys, Colorado Bulldogs, champagnes, Lone Star beer “and any of your favorite cocktails from our full bar”

-Iced tea, coffee, milk, Coke & Sprite

-Same Big Chief tablet cover as the original menu cover. The original menu had handdrawn and colored illustrations on the inside.

Be a Good Neighbor. Check.

County Line restaurants have a rich legacy of giving. It has won the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) Restaurant Neighbor Award, as well as a proclamation from the State of Texas on its 30th anniversary which states “The many celebrities who have visited the County Line include Darrell

Royal, Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock, Ray Benson and Jessica Simpson. President George W. Bush had County Line brisket delivered to a dinner in Washington D.C.” Here are just a few of the organizations the Austin County Lines partner with: Ronald McDonald House; Black Fret; Meals on Wheels; Cheyanna’s Champions 4 Children; Special Olympics Texas; The Refuge Ranch; The Paramount Theatre; Marbridge; Big Brothers-Big Sisters; Project Safe Place; and March of Dimes. In 2001, The County Line on IH-10 in San Antonio started a free weekly Texas music series benefitting the San Antonio Food Bank. The concerts are free but attendees are asked to donate food items or cash to the Food Bank. Now in its 23rd year, the County Line was recognized on 2015 by the San Antonio Food Bank for raising enough food to feed over 1 million people since the inception of the music series. The music series has expanded to The County Line locations in Albuquerque and El

Paso, benefitting Meals on Wheels and The Child Crisis Center of El Paso, respectively. Skeeter Miller, owner and president of County Line, has a litany of awards, including TRA Hall of Honor, TRA’s Restaurateur of the Year award, State Director–Texas Restaurant Association; former President of the Austin Restaurant Association; Member of TRA’s President’s Council and Political Action committees. He has sat on the Boards of the Austin Hotel, Lodging Association; the Texas Restaurant Association; and the Texas Restaurant Association Education Foundation.

The BBQ experience that the founding partners originated in the mid-70s is much the same today (with 50 years of perfecting). Just as it did in 1975, the County Line menu still showcases traditional barbecue fare and Texas comfort foods, prepared with its original barbecue sauces, spices and marinades, served in generous portions:

-beef brisket slow-smoked over natural green oak for 18-24 hours, then handtrimmed

-baby-back pork ribs basted with County Line’s sauce during the slow cooking process -large beef ribs slow-smoked over natural green oak

-sausage made in the Texas Hill Country by German descendants with exclusive County Line recipe, and then smoked twice over natural hardwoods

-smoked chicken or smoked, peppered turkey breast in its purest form, with no additives

-smoked prime rib

-“traditional” BBQ sides of cole slaw, potato salad, baked potatoes and beans, as well as appetizers, sandwiches, garlic mashed red skin potatoes and signature salads

-homemade bread and desserts, including homemade ice cream, cheesecake, Kahlua chocolate brownies, fruit cobblers in season, and bread pudding with Jack Daniel’s whiskey sauce

-full bar service, with the recent addition of craft beers and hand-crafted cocktails to longtime favorites such as Margaritas, Bloody Marys, Colorado Bulldogs, wines, Lone Star and Shiner Bock, with Happy Hours on weekdays

-complete children’s menu, with all plates including an entrée, fries, pickles or potato

chips, drink and homemade ice cream -many locations offer individual menu items such as items from the grill including chicken, hamburgers, veggie burgers, rib eye, vegetarian kabobs and salmon

-Gluten-free menus are available at all locations

The County Line Legacy:

The Hill and The Lake are the first of many equally successful County Line restaurants existing now throughout the Southwest—all adhering to those original four tenets of the original owners. Besides the two Austin locations described above, other County Line-owned locations and their opening dates are:

-The State Line – In 1977, the County Line owners found a historic property on the border of El Paso, TX and the state of New Mexico—and thus the name “The State Line.” Located in a building that originally housed a Spanish tile and custom fountain factory from the 1940s, this Spanish pays homage to the Southwest décor of this location with a spacious courtyard. The owners opened the adjoining Side Door Liquor Store in 2008 which has the unique situation of having the front door in El Paso, Texas and the side door in the state of New Mexico.

-County Line of Albuquerque – In 1984, the owners ventured out of state to New Mexico to open this location tucked up against the incredible Sandia Mountains, with views of the city lights. Located just two minutes from the Sandia Peak Tram, this beautiful southwestern roadhouse makes diners feel like they’re back on the old Route 66.

-County Line River Walk (San Antonio) – In 1995, this restaurant opened in the basement of building on the banks of the famous San Antonio River and its Riverwalk, with a river side patio and open-air bar. The funky Texas roadhouse atmosphere is befitting

this historic area of the city, with the San Antonio River and Riverwalk as its unique views. The County Line River Walk also offers private party barges.

-County Line on I-10 (San Antonio) – Called I-10 because of its location on IH-10 in the “Medical Center” area of San Antonio, this location opened in 1998. Besides its fabulous BBQ, “IH-10” is known for its shaded outside porch and heavily landscaped patio. This location is treasured for starting the popular Free Texas Music series benefitting the San Antonio Food Bank in 2001. The live music series is free; however, all who attend are asked to make a food or monetary donation to the San Antonio Food Bank. In 2015, the County Line was recognized by the San Antonio Food Bank for raising enough food to feed over 1 million people since the inception of the music series. In 2017 alone, it brought in a record-breaking number of donations: $7,822 in cash and 2,386 lbs. of food, which equals 80,609 lbs. of food to feed the hungry in San Antonio area.

-Air Ribs – This location is—well—everywhere. An online catalog of County Line’s

perfectly smoked, cut-it-with-a-fork barbeque can be shipped to all of the contiguous US states. Air Ribs’ Bar-B-Q delicacies include all sorts of combinations of beef and baby back pork ribs; smoked brisket; its signature sausage; legendary Bar-B-Q Sauces; Gift Cards and other trimmings

Who are the partners behind County Line? Partners Ed Norton and Don “Skeeter” Miller have been with the company since its beginning in 1975. Sadly, several of the original partners—Bruce Walcutt, Rocky Goss and Rick Goss—are deceased (as well as partner Randy Goss), but Miller and Norton are still running the business from its corporate headquarters in Austin. “Some barbecue restaurants pride themselves in replicating a grungy atmosphere with dirt on the floor and food served on wax paper,” says Miller, owner and President who also develops new product lines and menu changes. “What we do at County Line is provide top quality BBQ in a cozy setting—somewhere you can sit, relax, and have a great dining experience. That means everything to us.”

Autumn & Mental Health

Leaves are changing, pumpkin spice is brewing, and the days are getting shorter, and the weather is getting cooler. Many people relish this time of year, as it is the step right before spooky season, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

But for some, Autumn brings out feelings of lethargy, seasonal depression, changes in metabolism as biologically intended during the colder months (think hibernation mode), dryer skin, compromised immune systems, and not enough natural vitamin intake as the sunlight gets decreased.

So, what can we do? Autumn is to be enjoyed after all, not just endured.

We can do these things to help:

With the colder and shorter days, it is important to still stay active. Walking or even working out inside (gym or home, whatever is available), is something that can be effective when it comes to fighting lethargy. It also boosts the metabolism away from slowing down.

Vitamins are necessary- natural sunlight is always best but supplements such as vitamins A, E, and C are crucial. Also take advantage of fall fruits like apples, squash, and pumpkins as they have lots of important nutrients.

Even when it is colder your body needs the standard eight glasses of water a day. Many people link water consumption to just the warm months, but your body still needs it to function properly, and it is helpful for preventing dry skin and chapped lips.

Rest is important to maintain your immune system: it sometimes is compromised by the many holiday gatherings, but it is important to pace yourself and get rest.

With depression it’s important to monitor for recurrent symptoms and talk to your doctor about your mood, energy, diet, any feelings of loneliness, any feelings of self-harm or suicidal ideation (even when passive ideation, meaning without a plan or intention) so that they can determine if other help is needed whether immediate or longer term. Of course, if feelings increase and you no longer feel safe, please do not hesitate to call 911 or go to the emergency room. Otherwise, individual therapy would be helpful to navigate some of these symptoms.

The important part is to pay attention to your body and how you feel. Autumn can be a wonderful time, and with being an advocate for your body and mind, it can be the start of a wonderful holiday season.

Healthy Holidays: How to Maintain Your Weight Without

Missing Out

Simple strategies to enjoy holiday traditions without derailing your health goals.

The holiday season is a time of joy, comfort foods, travel, and family traditions—but it can also be a perfect storm for unwanted weight gain. Between festive meals, busy schedules, and colder weather that makes staying active more challenging, it’s easy to let wellness slip to the bottom of the list. The good news? Maintaining your weight doesn’t mean missing out on the season’s pleasures. With a few intentional strategies, you can enjoy every moment—and every bite—without starting the new year feeling like you’re playing catch-up.

Plan Ahead for Holiday Travel

Airports, road trips, and holiday schedules can throw off healthy routines. Pack portable, nourishing snacks such as nuts, protein bars, or fruit to avoid relying on fast food. Staying fueled with balanced choices will help you resist impulse eating when options are limited.

Balance Indulgence With Movement

Seasonal treats are part of the holiday experience, and you don’t have to say no to them. Instead, think “balance.” Enjoy a slice of pie at dinner—and then invite family for a brisk walk afterward. Even 15–20 minutes of movement helps digestion, burns calories, and boosts energy.

Mind Your Portions, Not Your Favorites

The holidays should be about enjoyment, not restriction. Instead of piling your plate high, serve yourself smaller portions of your favorite foods. Savor every bite and pause before going back for seconds—you may find you’re satisfied without overindulging.

Stay Hydrated, Even in Cooler Weather

Thirst can be mistaken for hunger, especially in colder months when we don’t feel as thirsty. Drinking water before and during meals not only keeps you hydrated but also helps control appetite and energy. For a seasonal twist, try warm herbal teas between meals.

Maintain Consistency Where You Can

The holidays may disrupt your usual routine, but holding on to a few anchors—whether it’s your morning workout, a balanced breakfast, or a regular sleep schedule—keeps your health on track. Small, consistent habits make a big difference over time.

The Bottom Line

The holiday season doesn’t have to mean choosing between your health and enjoyment. By planning ahead, practicing moderation, and keeping consistency in your daily routine, you can embrace holiday traditions while still feeling your best. Think of it not as restriction, but as balance—a gift to yourself that lasts long after the season ends.

Sunshine, Minerals, and Light: Beating the Winter Blues with Vitamin D, Magnesium & Red Light Therapy

When the days grow short and cold, many of us feel our energy drop and our mood dim. For some, this turns into seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression triggered by winter’s lack of sunlight. While traditional therapies like bright-light exposure and counseling are the first line of care, research now highlights three powerful allies for mood support: vitamin D, magnesium, and red light therapy.

Vitamin D: Brain Chemistry’s Sunshine Spark

Vitamin D is more than just the “bone vitamin.” In the brain, it helps regulate serotonin (our feel-good chemical), reduces inflammation, and protects neurons from stress. Unfortunately, winter’s limited sunlight means our natural vitamin D levels plummet—right when we need it most.

Magnesium: The Relaxation Mineral

Magnesium plays a quiet but crucial role in mood regulation. It calms overactive brain signaling, helps regulate sleep, supports the stress response, and even activates vitamin D so it can do its job properly. Yet many modern diets leave us short on this essential mineral.

Red Light Therapy: A Modern Twist on

Most people have heard of bright-light boxes for SAD. These mimic morning sunlight and help reset the body’s internal clock. But there’s growing interest in red and near-infrared light therapy (RLT)—using specific wavelengths of light that penetrate skin and tissues.

How it may help mood:

• Boosts cellular energy (mitochondria): Red light stimulates energy production in

Sunlight

brain and muscle cells, which may translate to improved vitality and resilience.

• Supports circadian rhythm: Evening exposure to red light is less disruptive to sleep than blue or white light, and may help balance natural sleep–wake cycles.

• Early evidence in mood disorders: Small studies suggest that red and near-infrared light applied to the head or body can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety—though larger trials are still needed.

Unlike bright white light therapy (the gold standard for SAD), red light therapy may offer added benefits for energy, skin health, and even recovery from exercise. Think of it as a complement, not a replacement.

Quick Lifestyle Boosters

Vitamin D Tips

• Catch morning sunlight when possible but sun is not enough. Studies show if we have low vitamin D to start we need to supplement as well

• Eat fatty fish, fortified dairy or oat milk, and egg yolks.

• Ask your doctor about supplements (5000 IU/day is standard, but higher doses may be needed if you’re deficient). Also Vitamin K2 is needed to help boost Vitamin D levels since it is missing from our soil and food sources. I tell patients Vitamin D3 and K2 5000 IU daily to start. Please check with your provider.

Magnesium Made Simple

• Eat leafy greens, nuts, beans, and whole grains.

• Consider magnesium glycinate or citrate (200–350 mg 3 times a day of magnesium glycinate especially if stress or sleep issues are prominent.

Light Therapy Options

• Bright-light box (10,000 lux): Use in the morning for 20–30 minutes. Proven effective for SAD.

• Red light panels or devices: Emerging option for energy and mood. Best used consistently, at safe distances, with eye protection as recommended. Again please check with your provider to ensure you are safe to use these therapies.

Whole-Person Winter Wellness

Together, vitamin D, magnesium, and red light therapy can form a strong support team against the winter blues. Add in daily movement, consistent sleep, and connection with others, and you’ll create a resilient foundation until the sunshine returns.

The Takeaway:

Think of these tools not as quick fixes but as powerful allies. Nourish your body with vitamin D and K2 and magnesium, light up your mornings with bright light, and explore red light therapy as a complementary boost. A brighter winter—inside and out—is possible.

Detailed explanation of how the occipital bone and the spinal column are related within

a RIFE frequency treatment, and the benefits that can be expected:

Relationship between the occipital bone and the spinal column

• Occipital bone: located at the base of the skull, right at the nape area. It connects with the spinal cord through the foramen magnum (occipital foramen), allowing direct communication between the brain and the central nervous system.

• Spinal column: protects and carries the spinal cord, which transmits nervous information throughout the body.

• Key connection: the occipital bone acts as the “gateway” for the nervous system into the spine. Any blockage, tension, or misalignment in this area can affect the entire spinal column and vice versa.

• In RIFE frequencies, treating both at the same time creates a synergistic effect, because it harmonizes nervous communication from the base of the skull to the rest of the body.

Benefits of applying RIFE frequencies to this area

1. Release of nervous and muscular tension

• Helps relax cervical and dorsal muscles.

• Reduces neck pain, migraines, and tension in the nape.

2. Improved circulation and oxygenation

• Stimulates microcirculation in the occipital region and along the spine.

• Enhances oxygen and nutrient deliv-

ery to the nervous system.

3. Harmonization of the central nervous system

• By working on the spinal cord and its occipital connection, it improves the transmission of nerve impulses.

• May support cases of insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, or autonomic imbalances.

4. Postural and joint benefits

• Relaxes the muscles that support the head and back.

• Helps improve posture and reduce chronic spinal pain.

5. Support for internal organs

• Each vertebra is connected with specific organs (according to integrative medicine and innervation maps).

• By balancing the spine with frequencies, it promotes the healthy functioning of digestive, respiratory, and urogenital organs.

Mesenchymal stem cells how to optimize them.

If you are considering a treatment with mesenchymal stem cells, it is important to know that you can optimize the quality of your cells before the procedure. Scientific studies have shown that certain changes in your lifestyle and diet can enhance the performance of these cells, improving the results of the treatment. Here we explain how to do it in a straightforward way:

REDUCE SUGAR CONSUMPTION

Excessive sugar negatively affects the quality of stem cells. High blood glucose levels decrease cell regenerative potential. Therefore, it is essential to limit sugary foods and drinks, opting for a diet that stabilizes blood sugar levels. FOLLOW A LOW-CARB, LOW-GLYCEMIC DIET

Adopting a diet based o n complex carbohydrates, such as vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, will help keep your insulin levels stable. These changes promote a more favorable environment for stem cells.

REDUCE CALORIES BY 20%

A small caloric deficit, of approximately

20%, can have a positive impact on stem cells. It is recommended to start this change at least two weeks before treatment to maximize its benefits.

STAY ACTIVE

Regular exercise is key to improving stem cell quality. Activities such as walking and swimming are helpful, but incorporating resistance training or weightlifting can be especially effective. Studies show that physical exercise increases the differentiation capacity of stem cells.

SUPPLEMENTS THAT HELP YOUR STEM CELLS

Certain nutrients and natural compounds have beneficial properties for stem cells, especially those related to cartilage regeneration. These include:

• Vitamin D3: Improves cell function and strengthens bones.

• Vitamin C: A key antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress.

• Turmeric: Has natural anti-inflammatory properties.

• Glucosamine and chondroitin: Support joint and cartilage health.

• Resveratrol: An antioxidant that improves cell regeneration.

• Fish oil (omega-3): Reduces inflammation and supports cell health.

AVOID ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS AND

CORTICOSTEROIDS

The use of medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids can decrease the quality and functionality of stem cells. If you need to relieve discomfort, consult analgesic alternatives or natural treatments.

SCIENCE BEHIND THESE CHANGES

All these tips are supported by scientific research that shows how the metabolic environment, nutrition and lifestyle directly influence the quality and regenerative capacity of mesenchymal stem cells. At MedNatura we help you recover your health and well-being with #rifefrequencies @Detox Matrix spectacular frequency for cells!

LISA SCHARF

What made you realize that music was your path?

Steven: At a very young age I could feel the emotion in a melody or chorus. Not knowing a thing about music at that age could just sense something special I couldn’t explain.

How would you describe the music that you typically create? Who are your biggest musical influences?

The Reunion: We feel that the music is in the Alternative category with a mixture of influences. There are elements of Alt Rock,

pop punk, post grunge early 00’s rock maybe even a sprinkle of classic rock. Collectively we have so many influences that it would be hard to narrow it down. We have a wide respect and appreciation for many types of music and artists.

What makes your music unique?

The Reunion: We have been told by several radio hosts and critics that the music has a nostalgic sound of the late 90’s early 00’s vibe. A music style you don’t really hear too much anymore. We know we aren’t reinventing the wheel but what we’ve created has been unique to us as writers and Co writers. We have a good chemistry and are open to bounce ideas around. Most importantly we are enjoying the creative process together!

Has there been one particular moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

Steven: There was this time after a show when this younger gentleman came up to me and expressed how one of our songs had helped him get through his divorce! He was going through a really dark time in his life and that the music helped him push through it. I was speechless and taken back but I quickly recognized how powerful music could be.

Who inspired you to make music? How would you describe the music that you typically create?

The Reunion: We all grew up with music in the house.

Our folks didn’t have a lot of TV’s and cable in the house but they had a radio and a turn table. So music was always being played Growing up we heard 50’s, 60,s,70’s, 80’s! We were bombarded with different eras before us. It was an awesome time for music!

Frank: I would describe our music as Alt Rock with elements of pop punk, post grunge early 00’s rock.

What is your creative process like?

Steven: For me it’s like puzzle pieces. Usually it starts with some melody in my head then I chase down on the guitar until I find

it, then I build around it. In other cases, just simply improvise on the guitar until something pops out that strikes my attention. Then things start coming together.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Frank: Bad Flower, Blink 182 James: Weezer.

Steven: Smashing Pumpkins

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Frank: Everyone counts! We are grateful for the likes and support! Wether it be a small show or huge.

Steven: Simply to say thank you. You could do anything and the fact that you chose to take a moment out of your day or evening to

see us play. It’s truly humbling.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

Frank: Yes, whatever is on the playlist. Johnny Cash, Slipknot. Either way it’s therapeutic!

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Frank: I’ve always have a passion for building and customizing guitars and basses so I would probably be doing that.

Steven: Honestly I don’t know because I don’t think I would be here if it wasn’t for music and the grace of God. It has gotten me through so much! It’s definitely lead me to this very moment right here, right now!

Where have you performed?

The Reunion: We have performed the Annual Bar B Que Kick off, Peanut Festival, Taste of the Southside, Fiesta, Market events, Main Street Bar, Retox Bar, Bar B que Republic, The Ridge at the Hill, La Tuna plus several private functions.

What are your favourite and least favourite venues?

The Reunion: We don’t really look at it that way. For us to play anywhere, really is another opportunity for us to do what we love. We are grateful for it!

Do you have any upcoming shows?

The Reunion: We just came off the Billy Madison Morning Show with 99.5 Kiss Rock fm March 27th

We have a string of dates at The Strawberry Festival this year. April 11th,12th,13th Fiesta De Los Reyes Tues April 29th plus a

few private events. June First Friday for our album release show.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

Frank: it’s a double edge sword because there is an over abundance. While it made it easier to get your music out there, it made it truly hard to stand out.

What is your favorite song to perform?

Frank: As far as covers Zombie from the Cranberries and Santeria from Sublime. Favorite Original song to perform is Goodbye, Goodnight.

Steven: At the moment I’m really digging Penny Royal Tea from Nirvana and Burn from The Cure. They are both chill but slightly

heavy with our rendition. As far as Original songs I would say Runaway. It just resonates with me.

James: My favorite original songs to play are Her and Yesterday.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

Steven: Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engaged. His music is the perfect balance of heavy and extreme with melodic choruses. His lyrical content expresses the emotional challenges of those intrusive thoughts of self harm and mental health. He appears to be very genuine and open about his mental health journey but huts you in a positive way!

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Frank: Never take too much stock into people’s negative comments. Usually it comes from a place of anger or their own insecurities. With that being said, do what you love! You only have a short time on this planet, so why waste it!

Steven: Always try to find the good in things, stay positive and to always have faith that things will always work itself out.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

Frank: The perceived devaluation of your art would be the number 1 thing I would change. People take music for granted because it’s so over abundant however it’s like water. Take it away you truly see how important it is

Steven: More avenues of support for independent artist without the politics, monopolization and gatekeeping of the industry. What’s next for you?

The Reunion: To Release our Vinyl Ep this summer with a follow up album release party in collaboration with Bonita Market co. and First Friday in June plus put out a couple more music videos in support of our ep and continue writing more music. We have enough music ideas to create another album but have been stretched with time to put it all together and record it. Hopefully we will see ourselves back in the studio in the fall or early winter.

What would you like your Music Legacy to be?

The Reunion: That it would be to inspire and help people get through life’s challenges and that it would have a positive impact on them. Music has done so much for us, we would love to do our part and return the favor!

OHOTEL EMMA CELEBRATES A DECADE OF DISTINCTION IN SAN ANTONIO

n a crisp Friday evening, November 14, 2025, the social stars of San Antonio gathered beneath the warm glow of the historic Pearl Brewhouse as Hotel

Emma marked a milestone—10 years of redefining hospitality in the Alamo City. The award-winning hotel, recently honored with the prestigious Michelin Two-Key recognition, commemorated the occasion with a celebration as artful and refined as its storied walls.

From SA Monthly… Happy 10th Birthday to Hotel Emma!

It feels like just yesterday that Hotel Emma welcomed its very first guests on November 12, 2015, breathing new life into the century-old brewhouse built in 1894. A decade later, it has become a cornerstone of the city’s renaissance—expanding the Pearl’s cultural vibrancy and effortlessly becoming the rendezvous point for celebrities, creatives, entrepreneurs, and discerning travelers from across the globe. Over the years, the hotel’s understated glamour has drawn everyone from Paul McCartney and Celine Dion to Adam Sandler, reinforcing its place as a beloved Texas treasure.

A Night of Makers, Music, and Memories

This year’s anniversary gala—an intimate “Meet the Maker” celebration—felt like stepping into a living love letter to craftsmanship. The evening honored the talented curators, designers, artisans, architects, and visionaries who shaped Hotel Emma’s identity. The surroundings —equal parts industrial history and refined luxury—provided the perfect backdrop.

Guests drifted from room to room, cocktail in hand, sampling culinary artistry prepared by James Beard Award–recognized Chef Geronimo Lopez, whose menu paid homage to local flavors elevated with world-class technique. Each dish told a story; each bite carried a hint of San Antonio’s rich heritage. The Sternewirth bar team matched the energy with handcrafted cocktails—bold, inventive, and delightfully theatrical.

Live music filled the air, weaving through conversations like a golden thread. Laughter echoed against the original brickwork; glasses clinked beneath glow of chandeliers that once illuminated the brewhouse floor. It was a gathering neighbors, industry leaders, longtime friends of the Pearl, and travelers have become part of Hotel Emma’s largerthan-life story.

A Decade Rooted in Community

While Hotel Emma is known as hideaway for the famous, the anniversary gala served as a beautiful reminder that true legacy is deeply rooted in community. Its team, many of whom have been with the hotel since its inception, radiated pride throughout the evening. The celebration honored not only the past but also the people—staff, partners, makers, and guests—who have shaped the hotel’s journey.

A Toast to the Next Ten Years

As I looked around the bustling room, it became clear why Hotel Emma continues to stand in a category all its own. It is elegant yet warm, historic yet modern, luxurious yet welcoming. It is a place where stories begin, where memories are born, and where the soul of San Antonio is preserved in every detail.

With its 10th birthday, Hotel Emma has not only solidified its place as one of the most iconic destinations in Texas, but it has also set the stage for an exciting new decade of hospitality excellence. From Michelin-level recognition to its ongoing cultural partnerships, the hotel continues to expand its influence while staying true to its roots.
