2D Animation Script Projector: 2D Animation Presenter: 2D animation is an illusion of moving images in a two‐dimensional space, which is normally done using a computer and software such as flash. For this unit we had to create our own 2D animation and this is what I came up with; Projector: My Idea Presenter: My idea starts off with a rocket taking off from earth. It then flies through space and lands on the moon. When it lands on the moon the astronauts meet an alien who gives them a liquid substance from a purple pool and strange green crystals from a giant rock. The astronauts then get back in the rocket and leave the moon to go back to earth however on their way back they mix both the liquid and the crystals together which leads to them and the rocket to get blown up. Projector: Where did it come from? Presenter: I started off by researching the history of 2D animation and looking as previously made animations by people such as the Lumiere Brothers. I then started looking at more recent animations that are in adverts, music videos, television programs etc. some examples of the animations I looked at are the title sequence to Nickelodeon’s cartoon Cow and Chicken, a road safety advert and Disney’s sleeping beauty. The next step was to brainstorm all my ideas, to do this I separated an A3 sheet of paper into five sections: characters, storyline, scene, how to animate and audio. Under each section I listed down all the ideas I had and then picked the best idea on the sheet. Projector: Proposal Presenter: I will use flash to create my animation and it will be around a minute long. I will aim for between 12‐15 frames per second. My target audience would probably be 9‐10 year old boys as they would probably find it quite amusing and to make it suitable for them it will be a simple cartoon animation in which the characters look funny and not scary and there will be no swearing or any relations to anything inappropriate as otherwise there would be many complaints about the animation and it would not be suitable. Projector: Technically Produced Presenter: To create the backgrounds, characters and different objects such as the rocket I hand drew them and then scanned them into the computer. The next step was to open all of the scanned files into Photoshop in order to delete the white background that was unneeded as shown in the picture below. To delete the background I had to duplicate the layer and then delete the original layer as it is locked. Then using the Magic Wand tool I selected the white background which I didn’t want and the pressed the backspace button to get rid of it before saving the new image as a PNG so it will open in Flash. The only image that was done differently was the Alien as I had to cut the arms and tentacles off and place them on another layer in order to make them move when put on Flash. Thirdly I opened Flash then by going to File ‐ Import ‐Import to library, I selected all the different hand drawn images that I needed which then came up on the right to the screen ready to use when I needed them. The next part was to create all the layers I needed for that particular scene, all together there are 16 scenes in my animation, and then I named each layer as shown in the image below, this allows me to know what layer goes with what image so I know what I am changing and selecting. After, I dragged the different parts I needed from the library onto the canvas that I was using and added frames. At the beginning and end of every different movement I put a key frame and then to make some movements smooth I crated a motion tween. After I had finished my animation I went onto YouTube and searched for all the sounds I needed which I then downloaded. The final step was to open the exported animation and all the sounds I downloaded in Final Cut Pro. Once this was done I placed the animation on the timeline and then went through and selected the sounds I wanted which were then also placed on the timeline at the part of the animation I wanted them to be. Finally after all this was done I exported it using quick time player and uploaded it onto YouTube.


Projector: Soundtrack Presenter: My soundtrack starts off with a countdown from five; this indicates when the rocket will takes off. As soon as the countdown finishes and the rocket take off the backing track of Starman by David Bowie starts which plays the rest of the way through the animation as well as the sound the rocket flying, this carries on until the rocket lands where the sound of the rocket flying stops but the backing track keeps going. The next sound to come into the animation is the alien, which consists of high‐pitched noises. After this, when the rocket takes off again the sounds of a rocket flying come back. Second to last is another sound effect of bubbles that starts after the astronauts mix both substances together and then finally it’s the sound of the rocket blowing up. Play: First Draft Projector: Feedback Presenter: I showed the first draft of my animation to a small group of people to see what they think. The main comment I got was to change the aliens voice and make the story longer. Although they said my animation is a good idea I had a lot of changes I have to make such as adding more to the soundtrack and making parts smoother for example when the rocket flies around the world. This feedback was very helpful and showed me all the changes I needed to make. Projector: Changes made Presenter: From the feedback I got I could see that there were many changes that I needed to make. The first change I made was to add and change the soundtrack such as the countdown at the beginning, the background track and the alien speaking. I also added a few new scenes making some of them the main one being the mixing of the liquid and crystals. Play: Final Product Projector: Feedback Presenter: After making the changes to my animation I showed it to the same small group of people to see what they think of it now, a lot of them said its good and they like certain parts of it such as the soundtrack and the new scenes. The only two changes that the group commented on that I could change to make it better is the one jump cut that is lest and to make the astronauts more animated. Apart from those two changes that could be made it was all positive feedback.


To: Creative Director From: Future Films Production Project Title: Max Factor Advert Regarding: Email received about the proposal. I have chosen to call the production Max Factor Magic, as it is the new tag line for Max Factor. The new tagline as said above is short, sweet and catchy and will stick in the viewer’s minds. I decided to change the tag line as the previous one was getting a bit old and the consumer needs a change to get enticed back in to buying the mascara product. The target audience will remain the same, 16‐25, as they are the best group to advertise mascara at due to the fact that they are more likely to buy make up. Although females of an elder generation also use mascara 16‐25 year olds wear it more often and more women from that age range will purchase Max Factor mascara. I am going to use a range of different techniques. I am mainly playing on envy as this is commonly used in make up advertisements due to the fact that girls will want to be like the girl in the advert that is wearing the mascara as they will look confident which most teenagers and young adults want. The colour scheme is going to be natural. The actors/actresses will have minimal make up on especially the main actress, by doing this the mascara product will be exaggerated as it will be the only make up product visible on screen. Another reason I am using a natural colour scheme is it will come across as using the mascara is a natural part of the day and not a chore. This colour scheme will also work well with the natural lighting used in the advert. I have come up with a new logo for the mascara product, as it is always good to make changes and introduce something new to the consumer. The new logo I have come up with isn’t a massive change to the old one, it still contains the big X and the full name ‘Max Factor’ however the font is different an underneath the word ‘Factor’ I have added the word ‘Magic’ to go with the new tag line. By doing this the consumer will remember the advert that used the tagline whenever they see the logo which in the long run will hopefully make the advert more successful in selling the product. The sequence will start of with a shot of your mascara product and fade into an image of a girl sitting on her own starring. The camera then cuts to show what she is staring at, a boy, who looks like he is walking up to her when in fact he walks past her. After, another girl comes on the scene and hands over the product, a close up of this is shown and the products with the words ‘BIGGEST Brush Ever’ to the left of the product. The next shot is the girl putting on your product, which shows the viewer what they get for their money. After this it shows the same as before however the boy is the one staring and as the girl walks past him she winks and carries on walking. The boy then turns his head following the girl. The second to last shot is the boy looking at the camera nodding as if he approves now she has the mascara on. Finally it shows another shot of the mascara with the new logo to the left of it. As you can see my idea for advertising your product constantly shows what the advert is selling therefore the image sticks in the viewers mind. I think it will be successful as it shows that the mascara gives confidence and many girls want that confidence. Max Factor change of idea My original idea started with a close up of Max Factor Mascara brush to so it looks like eyelashes. Then the camera zooms out a little bit to reveal its an actual Max Factor brush and at the side of the brush the words ‘BIGGEST ever brush’ appear, the camera then zooms out a bit more to show a girl putting on the mascara which is followed by another zoom and a pan to show there are two girls ain a bed room getting ready to go out, both of the girls are putting mascara on but using two different brands one of which is Max Factor. We then cut to a comparison shot of the eyes of the two girls to show people the difference between Max Factor and another leading brand. The camera then cuts to show a shot of the girls walking out the door and start to walk down the street; this is followed by another cut where it shows a point of view shot where people are doing their daily routine such as waiting for a bus, going shopping, talking to a friend etc. Then it shows a shot of the girls walking towards the camera with the one who didn’t use Max Factor slightly out of focus. Then the camera zooms to show the girls walking and the people doing their daily routine, as the girls walk towards the camera everyone stops what they are doing and looks at the girl wearing Max Factor mascara. After this there is a shot of a different girl that was on the street walk up to the girl who wears Max Factor and asks, “What’s your secret?” she then replies, “There is no secret its just Max Factor Magic.” The final cut shows a plain white background with the actual mascara product in the middle of the screen with the words Max Factor Magic above the product. For this idea I needed around 10‐15 actors/actresses. I sent out an email around a week and a half before I needed to film to around 20 people and 13 replied back saying they could act out in the th th advert. We were scheduled to meet at Lee Green at 12pm on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 May. On the Saturday it was raining so the filming could not take place and on the Sunday only two of my actors/actresses showed up, this meant that I couldn’t film. Because of this I had to choose between postponing the filming until the following weekend or changing my idea and filming the weekend after. I chose to change my idea to one that only uses three actors/actresses as it is easier to chase up the people and there is not enough time to film after the following weekend due to editing and putting the advert together and if people didn’t show up again then I would not have enough time to film and edit my advert the way it should be. My new idea is based in a park. It starts with a shot of a girl with not a lot of confidence sitting on the grass looking into the camera. It then cuts to show her point of view, which is of a boy walking towards her. It then cuts back to her face, which transforms into a smiley/ happy face. The camera then cuts to show both of them and shows him walking past her and not even acknowledging that she’s there. The camera then cuts again to show her face looking sad. It then cut again to show a different girl walking up to her and sits down with her. Then the camera shows both girls talking. The girl that walked up takes the mascara out of her bag and says “You look like you need a bit of magic try using this, it’s Max Factor mascara, their biggest brush ever.” As she says this, the camera zooms into the product giving the viewer a clear view of what to look out for. The camera then cuts to show her looking in a mirror putting on the mascara; this then cuts to a comparison of her before and after to show the difference. The camera cuts again to show the guy sitting on the grass. Then shows a shot of the girl with the mascara on walking up the grass looking more confident. Then shows a full body shot of the guy stand up and stare at the camera. The next cut shows both the boy and the girl, this time with the girl walking up to the boy and the boy staring at her as if his seen her for the first time. In this shot as the girl walks up and becomes level to the guy she looks to the side at him, looks away and carries on walking. It then shows an over the shoulder shot of the boy turning to stare after her while she walks away. The final shot is a white background with the product in the centre with the words “Max Factor Magic Is All YOU Need!” This idea only uses three actors/actresses and so should be successful as three is easier to get hold of then 10‐15 and also it will not take as long to film. This idea should be effective as it implies that if you have Max Factor mascara then you don’t need anything else, it also implies that the mascara gives you confidence as before she had it on she was quiet and didn’t look like she has a lot of confident and after she had all the confidence she needed. This idea should work as an advert as it can apply to the target audience of 16‐25 as they can relate to it.
