DESIGN

What is and what should be for the next 25years to attain a metropolitan city of our dreams? Over the past decades, Lagos has advanced in aspects of education, hospitality, housing, and transportation. However, improvements in terms of sustainability and efficiency in waste management is yet to be fully attained. Lagos State has a population of 14,862,000, projected by the UN to increase annually by 3.44%. One of the hazards of its large population, is a poorly managed waste situation, resulting in environmentalpollution

and degradation, blocked sewers (flooding), traffic, choked water bodies and economic devaluation. In tackling this, our design proposal, "ÉWÁ ÌLÈ ÈKÓ (Beauty of Lagos' Waste)“, is a waste management methodology, proposing a sustainable, efficient and self-reliant Waste Facility and a Waste Awareness Tourist Centre, for the improvement of collection, refining(sorting, reusing, recycling) and disposal of waste in Lagos State

ÉWÁ ÌLÈ ÈKÓ

(Beauty of Lagos' Waste)

DESIGN CONCEPTUALIZATION

Hips of unpleasant and unhealthy landfill waste can be spotted around Lagos. Moving further, thinking of 25years and beyond replacing this eyesore with an efficient, sustainable and self reliant waste facility is essential.

The dung hill forms a plane as the elevation and sliced into 3 shapes

The plan of the dung hill mutates from a circle to an inverted “C” to allow a simple effective linear flow of operation and allowing more ventilation and light.

The sliced dung hill plane is extruded apart leaving the main form as the side elevation of the proposed facility.

The mutation and transformation of a dung hill into a sophisticated waste facility is completed with the extrusion of the inverted “C” shaped volume.

This confident striking geometry solves a lot problems like driving-in, off-loading and loading without generating traffic, ventilation, energy while the sloped roof is angled to receive optimal sunlight

THE PARADOX OF CLEANING DIRT.

The Paradox of cleaning dirt is a paradox generations have worked towards but still eludes many. ÉWÁ ÌLÈ

ÈKÓ (EIE) waste management facility doesn't only collect, refine and recycle waste but it provides public enlightenment to people coming in by watching the live process of which the facility works and learn other sustainable recyclable methods . The public then leaves with thoughts like "Now, I know how that my can of Coca-Cola was reused and I know how to reduce and repurpose little waste around my surroundings"

EIE serves as a point of attitudinal connection with how we, Lagosian, treat waste and nature. Therefore, leaving nature to retaliate with climate change among which is a flood, which leads to bad roads, traffic, and contaminated water causing illnesses.

EIE being a facility that produces close to zero greenhouse gases, 25 years from now, will be an Iconic, symbolic stand for a beautiful, clean, sustainable waste management system in Lagos state.

Conceptual Model

Concept was gotten from the Zaozhuang Stadium Shandong, China

Wave-Like Exterior

The façade has a dynamic, undulating shape, often described as wave-like, which gives the building a sense of movement and fluidity. This form reflects the idea of motion, fitting for a sports venue, while also harmonizing with the surrounding landscape, echoing natural elements like rivers.

To enhance my skills in conceptual form creation, I drew inspiration from the wave-like façade of the Zaozhuang building. Using tutorials from Balkan Architect, I successfully recreated similar forms, further developing my design capabilities

Conceptual Model

Concept was inspired by the Tbilisi Bridge in Georgia.

The Tbilisi Bridge of Peace in Georgia, designed by Michele De Lucchi and inaugurated in 2010, is a modern pedestrian bridge spanning the Kura River. Its wave-like steel and glass canopy, illuminated by LED lights displaying Morse code messages of peace, has become a symbol of unity and a blend of modernity with Tbilisi's heritage

Although I made few modifications while developing the form, But what stands out for me are the curving steel and glass canopy, features LED fixtures and illuminated handrails, creating a striking marineinspired design that glows brilliantly at night.

Method of model

conceptual massing, pattern based model family and adaptive modeling

Conceptual Model

A prototype of a pavilion design To enhance my skills in conceptual forms, I was able to learn using video tutorials as a guide. I successfully recreated similar forms, further developing my design capabilities by Creating organic form tensile structure using conceptual massing, pattern based model family and adaptive modeling.
