These pillars are not just ideals but are deeply embedded in the experiences our organizations offer, helping students like you grow both personally and professionally.

• Academic Excellence: We are committed to supporting your educational journey. Our chapters place a strong emphasis on academic success, offering resources and peer support to help you achieve your goals.

• Leadership Development: FSL is a place to build and strengthen leadership skills. Whether it’s through chapter roles or campus involvement, you’ll have numerous opportunities to develop as a leader and make a meaningful impact.

PILLARS OF ACHIEVEMENT & EXCELLENCE

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE | LEADERSHIP | SERVICE | LIFELONG CONNECTION & MEMBER DEVELOPMENT

The Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) community at Sam Houston State University has had a long and rich history, dating back to 1959. Since that time, fraternities and sororities have had a continued and active presence on campus. The University is supportive of the goals and ideals of the fraternity and sorority community, which complements the motto of the institution, “The measure of a life is its service”. These ideals include academic achievement, personal development, leadership, campus involvement, community service, and civic responsibility.

In addition to the minimum expectations to achieve Good Standing, chapters can achieve excellence through deeper engagement in FSL and university programs. Chapters can achieve excellence in four pillars, or areas of focus. Chapters that earn medals(s) of Achievement and Excellence will be recognized at the end of each academic year. The “Pillars of Achievement and Excellence” Program at SHSU aims to challenge the FSL community and its membership to live up to these common ideals upon which our respective organizations were founded. The “Pillars of Achievement and Excellence” program will challenge all SHSU FSL students to have integrity steadfast adherence to the oaths we took as we make lifelong commitments to our respective organizations.

The “Pillars of Achievement and Excellence” Program serves to assist the University FSL community in general and each chapter in functioning at the highest level of success and excellence possible. The program serves to assess chapters on best practices standards to be viable and successful members of the University FSL community and of their inter/national organizations. The program also intends to help provide for the best possible experience for individual members.

In addition, the University understands that FSL achievements and excellent chapters often go unnoticed; therefore, the “Pillars of Achievement and Excellence” program serves as a tool to publicly recognize high performing chapters.

The four pillars of FSL reflect the values members of the SHSU FSL community strive to uphold. Concentrating on these four important areas ensures that FSL members will be versatile individuals ready to successfully handle their world during and beyond their collegiate years.

Academic Excellence

A vital aspect of FSL membership at Sam Houston State University. Scholastic standards are important for each individual fraternity or sorority as well as the FSL community. Programming, incentives, recognition, and ongoing support are provided to help the FSL community pursue academic success. Academic achievement is the reason students are at SHSU; fraternities and sororities are constructed to help their members meet that goal.

Leadership

Developing leaders today for life after college is an essential part of FSL involvement. FSL members participate in a variety of programs that provide leadership advancement. There are many ways to be a leader in SHSU’s FSL community, including chapter and/ or council officer positions, national or regional leadership conferences, campusbased leadership opportunities, motivational guest speaker workshops, and committee involvement.

Service

An integral value at SHSU and the backbone of FSL involvement at the institution. It is perhaps the most honorable of the pillars, as members are given opportunities to participate in hands-on volunteer work, as well as engage in philanthropic events to raise money for charitable organizations. These opportunities ensure that FSL members leave a positive lasting impression on their community and build continuous habits of giving back.

Lifelong Connections & Member Development

Joining a fraternity or sorority is about making lifelong relationships that carryon beyond the boundaries of ordinary friendships. Bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood are created within an organization and provide SHSU FSL with a home away from home, guidance, career networking, and a sense of community. FSL members enjoy lifelong bonds and connections with friends that can provide support in life’s momentous occasions and celebration in life’s accomplishments.

FAMILY GUIDE TO GOING GREEK

Welcome to Sam Houston State University Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL)! Your student has many opportunities for campus involvement, and we are excited that they’re considering joining a fraternity or sorority. We realize that these decisions are often family decisions and would like to provide you with more information and some answers to commonly asked questions.

Benefits of Joining a Greek Organization

By joining a Greek organization, your student will become part of a welcoming community where hundreds of members develop leadership skills, engage with the community, and form lasting friendships. Fraternity & Sorority Life enhances the college experience with valuable opportunities for personal growth. SHSU has a rich history of Greek organizations, which remain among our most valued campus communities. Our fraternity and sorority members focus on academic success, community service, leadership development, and creating bonds that last well beyond graduation.

When do Students Usually Join Fraternity & Sorority Life?

While many students join a fraternity or sorority during their first semester, students of all levels (sophomore, junior, and senior) can participate in recruitment at any time. Depending on the organization, this may happen through formal or informal processes. For more details about joining, please see the “Recruitment & Membership Intake” section of this guide.

What is the Time Commitment?

The time required for fraternity and sorority involvement varies by chapter. New members typically spend more time during their first semester participating in the new member education process. While this process looks different from one organization to the next, it is used to help students learn about their organization’s history and values, develop important leadership and time management skills, and build relationships with fellow members.

Financial Obligation of Joining

The cost of joining a fraternity or sorority differs between organizations. Membership dues typically cover national fees, chapter operations, and social events. New members usually pay higher dues during their first semester to cover one-time initiation fees. For specific cost estimates for each of our four councils, please see the “Financial Breakdown” section of this guide.

Will Joining Interfere with my Academics?

Academic success should be your student’s top priority at SHSU. Each Greek organization has minimum GPA requirements and provides support to help members achieve their academic goals. Chapters regularly monitor academic progress and connect struggling students with resources like tutoring and mentoring. Many organizations also celebrate and reward strong academic performance through various recognition programs and incentives.

Can I Join Other Organizations if I Join Greek Organization?

Fraternity and sorority members actively participate in many campus and community organizations. Most chapters encourage members to join at least one additional student group. Greek members frequently serve in leadership roles within major campus organizations, including Student Government, Orange Keys, Orientation/Bearkat Kickoff Leaders, and Campus Activities Board. Keep in mind that once your student joins a social Greek-letter organization, they cannot join another one, so finding the right fit is important!

How will I know which Fraternity/Sorority is for me?

Choosing a fraternity or sorority is a personal decision, and it’s important to find one that reflects your values and interests. Before recruitment begins, take time to research different organizations—not just what they represent nationally, but also how they operate on our campus. Talk to current members to get a sense of the community and what day-to-day involvement looks like. Look for shared values and genuine connections. The right fit will feel like a place where you can grow, contribute, and belong.

Who runs Fraternities and Sororities?

Fraternities and sororities are student-led organizations. Each chapter elects its own officers who are responsible for managing the group’s daily operations. These student leaders are supported by committees made up of fellow members, as well as alumni advisors who offer guidance and experience. Chapters also operate under the oversight of their national or international organizations, a campus governing council, and the university’s Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life. This office serves as a resource for leadership development, accountability, and support.

Where can I get more information for Fraternity & Sorority Life at SHSU?

The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life is on the main campus in Huntsville, Texas, in the Lowman Student Center, suite 315. They are open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can also visit their website at shsu.edu/dept/dean-of-students/greek-life.

In accordance with the Fraternity & Sorority Life Policy, all Potential New Members (PNMs) must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be eligible to join an IFC fraternity. For students without college credit hours, their high school GPA will be used to determine eligibility.

Multicultural Greek Council Recruitment

Each MGC organization at Sam Houston State University welcomes potential members through its own new member education process, much like NPHC organizations. While each chapter conducts its own individual recruitment process, the council often begins the semester with a joint recruitment event and the MGC Showcase, a dynamic opportunity for students to meet all MGC chapters and find the one that best aligns with their values, identity, and interests.

Some chapters host a Recruitment Week, offering a variety of educational, social, and serviceoriented events to help students engage with members and learn more about the organization. Others may offer Informational Sessions or Interest Meetings, providing a space to connect and gain insight into the chapter’s purpose, mission, and goals.

According to the Fraternity & Sorority Life Policy, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to join an MGC organization, though some chapters may set a higher academic standard. Additionally, most MGC organizations require students to have completed at least 12 credit hours before beginning the new member process.

National Panhellenic Conference Recruitment

Panhellenic hosts Primary Recruitment each fall semester, and it is usually held the week before classes begin. Interested students will need to sign up through the recruitment link and pay the recruitment fee; registration information can be found on the FSL website or on social media outlets for SHSU’s Panhellenic council. Each day, women will rotate between rooms meeting our chapters and will rank the chapters based on who they connect best with. The goal is to find mutual connection and interest between potential new members (PNMs) and chapters. Based on mutual interest, the number of chapters visited each day during Primary Recruitment will decrease leading up to Bid Day. Bid Day takes place after the last day of recruitment and is when PNMs find out which organization they have been invited to join.

During each spring semester, our chapters host Informal Recruitment. Informal Recruitment is hosted by individual chapters and does not include a week of events like Primary Recruitment. Additionally, all chapters may not participate in the Informal Recruitment process. Both NPC and SHSU’s FSL office require all PNMs to have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to join any NPC sorority. However, some chapters may have higher GPA requirements.

National Pan-Hellenic Council Recruitment

NPHC organizations recruit members independently and at separate times through a process called Membership Intake. This means that recruitment is continuous and ongoing. However, interested students should look out for a bi-annual informational meeting, Greek Assembly, held within the first 2-4 weeks of each long semester. Attendance is required at Greek Assembly for any student interested in joining a Divine Nine chapter during that semester. Chapters also usually conduct Interest Meetings/Rush events that are formal in nature. Attending an individual chapter’s functions is a great way to meet and get to know members of that chapter and discreetly express your potential interest in that organization. Per the Fraternity & Sorority Life Policy, NPHC requires all interested students to have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to join, although some chapters may have a more strenuous GPA requirement. Also note that most NPHC organizations require new members to have at least 12 credit hours at the institution they are seeking membership through.
