01 GLEN ECHO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Fall 2018 // Studio Crtic // Jacqueline Gargus

How does one relate pedgogy and architecture? That is the task in the elemtary school project. The design for the school is influenced by the site location along High Street where its eastern edge is along a major thoroughfare, while its western portion is in a ravine. Its thermal organization complements the spatial organization where the design relates indoor and outdoor spaces through a series of spatial interconnectedness and internal migration.

In this project I explored tensions between collective order and individual autonomy on a variety of scales- unit and assembly, building and site, teachers and students, education and society. The multitude of perforated oppoturnites is fostered by a transparent synchronization of views into the ravine. The fluidity of organization between classrooms establishes integration of outdoor affinities and heiarchical programmatic experiences inside.

The La Brea Tar Pits museum is located on Wilshire Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles.

La Brea is a Natural History Museum that displays the pleistocene fossils found in the tar pits located on the site. The museum exists both as a place of learning and an active storage site for the pleistocene artifacts. The building is a temple for ancient bones that works to house these artifacts.

Taking inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Phillips Pavillion, we facilitated a connectedness between the tent-like form redefined into an architecture of ruled surfaces. This organic synthesis of hyperbolic paraboloid shapes transitions into a design involving a tensile structure of steel cables strung from steel posts at the end of the tent to form the hyperbolic parabaloids.

The pavilion is a cluster of hyperbolic paraboloids, composed asymmetrically in order to create dynamically-angled contours and is to be constructed out of glass panels. Steel tension cables on the exterior give the pavilion a dynamic reticulated appearance. Using curved surfaces composed of straight lines defines an intriguing play of hyperbolic paralleloid surfaces.

03 URBAN COWORKING TOWER Spring 2019 // Studio Critic // Bart Overly

The office space has been a long standing point of contention for architects. The Urban Coworking

Tower

imagines

a

new

office

space, the office of the future. The project is an office building designed to create an office space for freelancers. To adequately design for the diverse pool of occupants the building becomes a composition. It works at various scales and through different means to mitigate the multiplicities of use present.

Taking cues from a faceted and crystalized form, the tower synthesizes into multiple floor plates differentiated into recreational, work, and civic spaces. With multiple double-height apertures that seamlessly connect each office floor, the building opportunistically filters in lighting and transparency while introducing numerous mezzanine experiences.

04 STUDY HYPOSTYLE HALL Group Project // Spring 2018 Studio Critic // Dow Kimbrell

The objective of this study hypostyle hall was to create a space for 1-4 people to occupy.

The requirements were that it had to have at least 3 columns and be made out of no more than 50 sheets of cardboard, and was to be constrained to 12 sqft having a hypostyle hall feature.

The intent of this design was to create a space that would mimmick and evoke relative forrest-like qualities of being surrounded by tall and overpowering columns. The faceted, crystallized structures of our columns would then flawlessy harmonize and fasten with the panellized canopy above. Consisting of faceted triangular shapes, the columns were meticulously organized to conceive seamless ties wtih each other. What ensued was a cohesive system of triangular pieces that established a tenacious network of corrugated cardboard firmly supported by the binding of panels.

Speculative architects mostly create narratives about social, environmental, political and technological issues to see and test how these influences shape our thinking of space, culture and future societies. This studio attempted to imagine new forms of agency within these territories. Design fictions are embedded with a whole lot of experimentation to construct images of future realities or opportunities in contrast to present realities. our team wanted to create a visually and spatially intriguing architecture to evoke new sensations of play. By deploying these stack or “pile-up” organizations made up of our playful objects, we were able to investigate several proposals that could allow the reimagining of the qualities of existing cities. This sort of hyper-aggregated accumulation re-constructs existing urbanistic identities by instigating compository formations that rely on psychological conditions of joy and play.

What if all cities incorporated aspects of play?

What if exploration through major cities become hot spots of pleasure and enjoyment? We wanted to challenge the existing typology, define play, explore psychology and experiment with inhabitants’ experiences.

Through our research, we gathered that a key visual primitive that mediates the formation of rapid impressions, such as like, dislike or fearful or playful, is the extent to which the contour of an object and its features is curved. Our objects mimic familiar, curved forms seen in nature done in a completely unfamiliar and surprising way. The familiarity of the forms will provide enough comfort for people to feel safe enough to explore and play. We sampled seascapes as a way of making our biotic forms with a variety of exuberant colors and patterns.

Antithetical to the neutrality of the stacked boxes, the stacking of playful objects instantly stimulates spatial variety and offers the sectional and spatial fluctuations the pile of playful characters exudes. In terms of nesting, the nested playful characters provide synchronized curvilinear forms that allow for pleasurable complex views and loose organizations that stimulate interest for the viewers.

Our project "Homo Ludens City" brings into focus the making of urbanisms via play, a free and transformational act. Homo Ludens City is not based on prescribed rule sets but on invention--a continuous search for the new, and freedom from all external constraints are necessary.

It was essential to incorporate the “play,” expressed architecturally to create this new urban strategy to co-exist within cityscapes.By fostering active engagements between the architecture and its inhabitants, we hope to create a novel typology that embraces “play” as a novel form of social engagement. Ultimately, we wanted to create active, social-condensers.

06 Dance and Performance Arts Center Spring 2018 // Studio Critic // Dow Kimbrell

Given the task to design a dance and preforming arts center in a mid density city, I chose to design this dance center by allowing the view to experience the performer in a completely different way.

The staggered variety of rectilinear spaces were meant to propose unparalled views of programmatic entities. The differentiation in perforation of the boxes allows for transitional perspectives within the project. The illusion of the floating rectilinear forms is then supported by unmatched steel columns that invade and puncture the boxes rather than adjusting to prospective cuts made by the forms. The staggered circulation system synchronizes wtih the alternating boxes in order to provide a venturesome experience.

Located

on

the

busy

intersection

of

Woodroof and Lane on Ohio State's West Campus, the new collaborative discipline research lab needed to address issues of site.

Embedded within the fabric of the campus, the building could not be designed independent from its context.

To link the research building to the fabric of the campus, the overall form and curvature of the projects mimics the roundabout street that the building sits on. The building functionalizes the practial programmataic spatiality by retaining rectilinear qualities in one part of the building while the leisurely components of the project are curved into a seperate entity.

08 ASSORTED GRAPHIC DESIGN Fall 2018 - Falll 2019

The first set of drawings is from a seminar class that investigated the discursive role of drawing within twentieth century and current day architectural territories: some canonical, some obscure, some seductive, some lost and forgotten, some rare and archived, some current and paired. The class hoped to reclaim drawing as a primary site where an architectural idea is staged. The work shown is essentially an “Object Series” of a barstool reimagined in new and unconventional ways in order to produce a new representational set for a project. The resulting product is an exhibition that conists of co-opted and original project drawings and their correlated re-informed and re-interpreted representation sets.

The last set of graphics were quick climate-based studies to represent information for my systems class in an interesting way.

The goal was to grab the reader’s attention.

If the building’s axis is located on the east-west direction, then no windows are needed on the east side.

Instead of blowing conditioned air throughout the home like the air handler does, an air conditioner’s main function is to remove heat from Condenser within the home. It does this by passing warm indoor air through return ducts and then over the refrigerant coil within the AC system.
