Bringing the business community together People join the Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce for a variety of reasons, including to promote their business, to network and to support the economic interests of the Key Biscayne community. Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center The Visitors Center is connected to the Chamber’s office on the first floor of the Key Biscayne Police/Administration Building. A blue and white sign bearing the universal “i” for “information” directs motorists from Crandon Boulevard. At the Visitors Center, tourists and residents who want information on Key Biscayne find maps; brochures on stores, restaurants and professional services; coupons; and a bulletin board with news of local events and lists of things to do, as well as copies of Island Life magazine and The Islander News. “We’re not just there for businesses; we’re also here for residents and tourists who need information, such as the procedure for applying for a permit or launching a busi-

Visibility and exposure Times may change for businesses, but the fundamentals remain the same: visibility and exposure are key to survival and success. The Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce knows firsthand the importance and value of marketing. The Chamber’s website offers a searchable (via search word or keyword) and categorized business directory that features information about local businesses as well as links to their websites and to social media such as LinkedIn and Facebook. Members can post activities on a calendar of events, a feature many restaurants and entertainment venues on the island capitalize on and are witnessing the benefits from. Chamber of Commerce members can promote “hot deals” such as two-for-one offers and special discounts, as well as receive a biweekly newsletter, which contains a feature on new members.

“The Chamber has an excellent software program which transmits the information to its Facebook and Twitter followers,” says Susnjer. A new member is posted on the Chamber’s Facebook page, Tweeted and included in Island Life magazine. Other membership benefits include the opportunity to be showcased in a short feature titled “On Location,“ which is aired on Key Biscayne goverment TV Channel 77 and attached to the Chamber’s website via YouTube. Channel 77 broadcasts interviews of store owners and professionals that highlight their products or services to Key Biscayne residents. “We guide people on their way, we’re here to help those who wish to start their own business and point them in the right direction,” said Susnjer.

Upwardly Mobile When you go to the Chamber’s website on your smart telephone there is a user friendly mobile version of the website you may click on and use. This mobile version helps Key Biscayne businesses gain valuable exposure and consumers get useful information about local Chamber businesses, discounts, events and services. More and more people are using their telephone to access the internet, including social media and the Chamber is outreaching to them with all tools available.

Networking opportunities Throughout the year, the Chamber of Commerce hosts Networking Events, often with Chambers from other communities, including those connected with other countries. Chamber members are encouraged to attend these networkers to exchange business cards and share ideas with their peers. Supporting local businesses The Chamber of Commerce also has an annual booth at the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament to raise awareness of local businesses to the tennis fans. In 2011, Chamber Vice Chair Karen Llorente and Tennis Committee co-chair Michele Estevez recruited nine professionals, most of whom were members of Active Seniors on the Key (ASK) Club, to man the booth. “By enlisting the efforts of ASK members, we tapped into a group of people in our Village who are active, knowledgeable, have time, energy and enthusiasm, as well as are thoroughly familiar with the island,” said Llorente. “At the tennis center the Chamber booth is the face of Key Biscayne. We represent the whole island at the Sony Ericsson Open, so we felt it important to have everyone involved look, sound and act in a serious, knowledgeable yet friendly way.” For a nominal fee, Chamber members provided materials the volunteers distributed at the booth. The Chamber’s objective, said Llorente, was to see businesses on the island flourish and increase awareness not only about the island’s stores and restaurants but also its service providers such as doctors and accountants. “With the Chamber taking the lead to get all its members to work together within our committee structure, we feel that positive energy can only help everyone reach their individual goals,” points out Llorente.

Awards of Excellence

In 2012, the Chamber reintroduced its popular Awards of Excellence program, presenting awards in a variety of categories of members. Award winners were selected via an online poll.
