‘ENCOURAGE BIODIVERSITY’ IN SEASON OF CREATION Christians are being urged to encourage biodiversity and help stem the effects of climate change.

In 2016 Pope Francis declared 1 September an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, and the Church of England has collated online resources to equip churches, communities and individuals to respond and pray during the Season of Creation 2019.

It also provides resources for prayer and worship throughout the year here, and practical advice on biodiversity.

Under its full theme The Web of Life: Biodiversity as God’s Blessing, Season of Creation 2019 encourages churches and communities to hold sustainability events, including cleaning local waterways, planting trees and allowing churchyards and other spaces to grow wild in order to encourage biodiversity.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND CALLS FOR GREATER EMPHASIS ON HARVEST IN SCHOOLS There’s a call for more schools to celebrate Harvest as a new poll shows two thirds of people think there’s still value in children taking part in the festival.

A ComRes survey of over 4,000 adults also showed two thirds had fond memories of celebrating it in the past…

COVENTRY REFUGEE RESTAURANT TO EXPAND TO SECOND VENUE

The charities that receive the most through legacies in the UK have been revealed, with The Salvation Army coming seventh overall and the highest rating Christian charity.

The Salvation Army, which runs churches and social action projects for old people, people in poverty and those caught in human trafficking across the country, received £63.6 million in 2018/19 from legacies alone…

Legacy Fundraising Manager Jackie Birch said: ‘It’s amazing… It’s wonderful that whatever it is The Salvation Army is doing out in the community is having a massive impact about the way people feel about us.

‘I think part of it is because people see The Salvation Army as an organisation that can be trusted… The Salvation Army is actually at the heart of community and people see what we’re doing.’

A restaurant that is staffed and run entirely by refugees has been given the opportunity to expand in the city of Coventry.

The restaurant Arabian Bites, founded by the priestin-charge of St Francis of Assisi... the Rev Liz Jackson, opened as a pop-up restaurant in a temporary venue earlier this year, but has been so successful that it has now been offered a permanent home, and a second venue.

The restaurant grew out of the church’s existing work with refugees, where it runs sessions for the city council helping people into employment, and offers English lessons. Coventry has the second highest number of refugees of any city outside London, and many come to the city from Syria and Iraq…

The three-month pop-up restaurant, which was initially set up to help people to learn employment skills, quickly developed a huge following…

‘The restaurant is a wonderful way of showing what faith communities can do, especially if they work together, and it really does transform lives,’ Ms Jackson said.

HOLDING UP THE TRAFFICK AS you can see from this week’s back cover, Sunday (22 September) is the Annual Day of Prayer for Victims of Human Trafficking. It’s a good opportunity to think about what we can do to support them.

Since 2011 The Salvation Army has managed the government contract to provide specialist support to victims. More than 8,000 people have been helped in that time.

But what can we do as individuals?

We could watch a film. Pages 12 to 14 focus on a feature film that Ian Bennett, from Southport, has produced. Moved by what he heard about trafficking and modern slavery, and drawing on a lifetime’s experience of film-making, he recruited cast and a crew – some of them from the corps – to make a film about three trafficked women.

One Way Traffic is now available for corps to screen and may even be streamed online to a wider audience. Proceeds will go towards the Army’s work with victims of trafficking and modern slavery.

We could climb a mountain. On page 14 Angela Carlucci introduces the Community and Events Fundraising Unit’s latest adventure: Mount Toubkal Trek in north Africa. We can take part to raise funds to support victims of trafficking, people experiencing homelessness or our own corps community projects. If we can’t do that, Angela encourages us to recruit people who can.

We could drive a car. The Army relies on volunteer drivers to transport victims to its safe houses. Claire Bonham highlights this work on page 15 and introduces Emilly Silva, one of the volunteer drivers, who tells us what she does. ‘I have petrol in my car,’ Emilly says, ‘and I can play this small role in helping someone, so why wouldn’t I?’ We could spend our money more carefully. The 17 August Salvationist reported on the Army’s pan-European campaign to raise awareness by using fake adverts to show that ‘cheap products and services can come at the cost of hidden human exploitation’.

When we become aware of how things are made or provided we can make informed spending choices that might change lives.

We could wear a tattoo. You’ll soon get to read in a forthcoming issue about the #WeAreNotForSale campaign in the run-up to Anti-Slavery Day on 18 October.

The idea is to encourage people to wear a temporary barcode tattoo to raise awareness and raise money. Tattoos are available to buy for £1 from sps-shop.com and in every Salvation Army Trading Company shop.

These are just a few practical things, but why do any of them? Major Nick Coke answers that question in his Bible study on pages 16 and 17. He looks at the familiar parable of the good Samaritan, which illustrates Jesus’ challenge to ‘love your neighbour as yourself ’ (Luke 10:27). It’s more than just a call to help people in need, Major Nick suggests. It’s a challenge to reach beyond those who look like us, think like us and talk like us, and be a neighbour to anyone in need.

World leaders share a musical weekend AYR GENERAL Brian Peddle and World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Rosalie Peddle enjoyed music, fellowship and testimonies when they led a weekend at the corps.

Twelve-year-old Adam Riddiough welcomed the international leaders to The Gathering on behalf of the young people before the pair addressed the congregation.

During the event, held at the town hall, people were blessed by the ministry of the united bands of Ayr and Govan, Ayr Community Gospel Choir, Ayr YP Band, Kilmarnock Singing Company and soloist Rebekah Parkhill. Garry Allan, a digital skills coach at the corps, spoke about the impact of its outreach programme in the community, and also testified about how his role had led to his own spiritual growth.

Sunday morning worship at the corps brought challenge and blessing through a

testimony from Bandsman George Williams and items presented by the band and songsters.

In his Bible message the General called people to holy living, with a number responding at the mercy seat.

The Army begins flood response INDIA NORTHERN TERRITORY THE Salvation Army is responding to floods that have brought destruction over a large area of the territory.

Around ninety people lost their lives in July because of flooding in and around Jasidih, on the border between the states of Jharkand and Bihar, with more heavy rain in August causing further devastation around Bajpur in Uttarakhand State. Thousands of families have been forced from their homes, with many sleeping out in the open. The situation is similar in Jalandhar and Patiala, in Punjab State.

Two rapid response projects have been funded by International Headquarters, which will provide families most in need with a selection of food items, such as tea, flour, dal, sugar and oil, and bed sheets. Calling all photographers! New competition captures diversity of women’s ministries IHQ PHOTOGRAPHERS are being encouraged to participate in a new international competition capturing the essence of women in diverse mission and ministry around the Army world.

The contest is taking place ahead of the ‘reimagining’ of International Women’s Ministries, which will be launched in February 2020.

World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Rosalie Peddle explains: ‘Our International Women’s Ministries will experience a “reimagining”, and we want you to be part of it!

HEDNESFORD: Twenty-three families from the community attended a family fun day called You’ve Got A Friend In Me, inspired by the song from the film Toy Story 4. The children made new friends and enjoyed activities and crafts themed around characters Mr Potato Head, Bo Peep and Rex. At the end of the day everyone shared a meal and left with a card displaying the Bible verse ‘I have called you friends’ ( John 15:15), reminding them that Jesus is their best friend. – K. R. CROYDON CITADEL: Thirty-one families who had never seen the coast, or had been unable to share a family day out this summer, were taken on a special trip to the seaside. Hello and goodbye DONCASTER DIVISIONAL leaders Majors Raelton and Lynn Gibbs welcomed five officers into the Yorkshire South with Humber Division and farewelled a cadet to William Booth College.

Major Gary Rockey-Clewlow (Scunthorpe) expressed words of welcome and Major Alan Norton (Barton-upon-Humber) responded on behalf of the officers. A time of dedication and prayer featured a vocal solo from Captain Lucy Mann (Charter Row Lifehouse and Sheffield Citadel), which included the words, ‘He’s always been faithful to me.’

Major Lynn welcomed Janet Stevens into the Fellowship of the Silver Star, following the commissioning of her daughter, Lieutenant Sharon Stevens (Dundonald), in July.

Session. A greeting to Cadet Steph from territorial leaders Commissioners Anthony and Gill Cotterill was shared, along with words of farewell and encouragement.

Young man on a mission LANGLEY MOOR JUNIOR soldier Harry Heslop was awarded a Young Heroes Award by Durham Constabulary in honour of his positive contribution to the community.

For the past three years the inspirational nine-year-old has been involved in fundraising for several causes, including Operation Christmas Child with Samaritan’s Purse UK. Last year he went the extra mile, rounding up his family and friends to pack more than 20 shoeboxes with gifts for children in need around the world.

He did not stop once these boxes were handed in. Asking himself why only children received these gifts, he also collected some bare necessities to fill backpacks. These were given out through the corps to rough sleepers in the area.

Harry has even given his lunch to people experiencing homelessness and stopped to chat with them – prompting passers-by to give as well.

He is currently raising money through Bringing Back A Smile Charity for a five-year-old who is suffering from spina bifida, autism and epilepsy.

Harry does not do any of this for self-gratification, often becoming embarrassed when his activities are announced in meetings. Corps officer Captain Lorna White said: ‘As his officer I cannot think of a better young man than Harry to be recommended for a Young Heroes Award. He will grow into a fine young man and make the world a better place.’ – A. R.

Playing for God’s glory

International Staff Bandmaster Stephen Cobb talks to Lieut-Colonel Jonathan Roberts about the staff band and its mission opportunities

‘E

VERY season is unique and there are very real possibilities,’ says Stephen as he reflects on the ministry of the International Staff Band ahead of the new season.

Looking back on the past year he identifies the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) weekend in January as a significant highlight.

‘It was a wonderful opportunity and it was great for the band to have to function at a really high level that weekend,’ he says. ‘To meet people that used to be part of The Salvation Army was a great relational and missional opportunity. Some who were at the RNCM Brass Bands Festival on Saturday came to Sale Corps on Sunday. The band still has this emotional pull on people who used to be in the Army and they come back to listen. Opportunities like that remain special and we never take them for granted.’

The band’s annual fixtures are not taken for granted either.

‘We play at the parliamentary carol service every year, and I think, “What a privilege this is for The Salvation Army.” And at the territorial carol concert there are people that don’t really understand the Army beyond making a donation, so it’s a great opportunity.’

Stephen is clear about the band’s purpose: ‘It is the same as any other music group in The Salvation Army, which is to bring honour and glory to God.’ Although this is evident when the band plays in public, some of its most important work is done behind the scenes.

‘Week in, week out, our function is to support the ministry and the mission of Army musicians by preparing music for the Territorial Music Council,’ he explains. ‘We play all types of music that’s given to us. It’s recorded then played to the council who discern whether it’s of the quality that they want and relevant for sections to play.’

Stephen has witnessed a number of gradual changes in the 25 years that he has led the staff band.

‘There has been constant evolution,’ he reflects.

‘The geography of the band has changed: the members are not all London-based. And we’re

looking at what we bring to a corps on a Sunday and saying, “Have you ever thought about doing this?” The band should always be looking at how it continues to be relevant to the Carlisle 26 and 27 October Army and to people out there. We are relevant out there, and lots of non-Army people get what Kettering Citadel we do.’

23 and 24 November The membership of the band also changes from time to time, and in the past year or so Territorial Carol Concert there have been some significant departures: Royal Albert Hall ‘Derick Kane is the obvious name, and as long 4 December as there is the staff band Derick will be remembered because of the years he’s given at such a high level. Trevor Caffull, Martin Tiplady and Paul Sharman have also left after a number of years.’

Anglia and Central East NEWS FEATURE

CHANGED LIVES AND NEW COMMITMENTS Every year young people gather for summer schools across the territory.

Delegates and divisional youth specialists share what they got up to ANGLIA AND CENTRAL EAST IT was a week like no other, writes delegate Hannah Carr (Norwich Citadel). The theme was Rise, with students encouraged to ‘rise and perform the tasks God is calling them to do’ and given the opportunity to put that into practice. Each day in cell groups we unpacked the morning’s teaching and studied the Bible.

Band members tackled pieces such as ‘Tu Es Petrus’ and ‘To The Chief Musician’. Singers explored different styles of music, such as the upbeat ‘No Rocks A-Cryin’, alongside more reflective items, such as ‘You Are Always There’ and ‘His Reflection’, written for the summer school by Andrew Wicker.

Media students learnt about creating campaigns for different projects and had the privilege of posting the Army’s territorial Instagram stories during this period. As a result, the account gained nearly 100 extra followers, engagement rose by a significant 43 per cent and profile visits rose by 79 per cent.

As a second option, students could choose between sport, dance, worship band and AV studies to learn how to incorporate them into corps activities.

Everyone also enjoyed evening entertainment such as laser tag, team games, a comedy night, workshops and a silent disco – there was little time for sleeping!

A final celebration perfectly portrayed the fun shared together and the ways in which God had worked. Everyone went home feeling 8

spiritually fulfilled, proud of their achievements and grateful for old and new friends.

CENTRAL NORTH SUMMER school was a Spirit-led week that created many great memories, shares delegate Owen Knott (Bolton Citadel).

The theme was based on Joshua 1:9: ‘This is my command – be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go’ (New Living Translation). We were challenged to understand what being courageous means in today’s society.

Nick Lister, who co-hosted BBC Radio Lancashire’s Stargazing Live, spoke on God’s incredible creation, and singer-songwriter Becky Higg shared her testimony.

Guest speakers gave insights into the Army’s work with the LGBTI community and victims of modern slavery and human trafficking, and its multigenerational worship.

Games included capture the Army flag, while worship on the beach at sunset provided an opportunity for reflection.

Personal highlights included Jamie Cutteridge’s talk about having courage in persecution, by knowing that God is in control, and a worship night where delegates could experience different kinds of prayer. The week concluded with a time for testimonies and everyone was encouraged to give thanks and praise.

CENTRAL SOUTH AND EAST MIDLANDS SUMMER Camp 2019 was another remarkable week, seeing the transforming power of the Holy Spirit at work among the young people, writes divisional youth specialist Andrew Whitehouse (East Midlands).

It was a week of discipleship, worship, mission and a bucketload of fun! In our daily worship and small groups we explored more about the life of Peter and his perseverance in following Jesus. A real community vibe was felt throughout the camp, and the young people were able to explore and express their faith.

Every day we prayed for each other, and for the world around us, as we learnt how to pray the Bible and embarked on a prayer walk in the community.

A highlight of the week was seeing the young people wade out into the deeper waters of faith. They took part in social action projects and led a community fun day at Bicester Corps. At the end of the week they celebrated with their families, leading worship and sharing what God had done in their lives. We prayed over them that they would continue their walk with Jesus, serving in their corps and making a difference in their communities.

The theme for the week was Free, encouraging the young people to be free from fear and sin, and to be free to have new life.

The young people were able to share openly about the things that scared them, and to celebrate the things that bring life.

The week included creative arts, small groups and outdoor activities. A highlight was when the young people led a family fun day in partnership with Tavistock Corps. Several members of the community engaged with the sport, face-painting and games that took place. Some of the young people also stepped out in faith and offered prayers for passers-by.

Entertaining activities included scavenger hunts, mission activity tasters, the inflatable, water-powered chaos of It’s a Knockout, the electric atmosphere of the praise party and the annual summer school ceilidh. On one evening delegates recreated well-known films, before a makeshift Oscars ceremony.

One of the moments that spoke to me the most was an evening with prayer stations for united reflections around the cross. Praying with young people is a privilege and seeing them support each other and testify was encouraging and inspiring.

We also went off site to do some gardening alongside some of the town’s older residents.

Young people also had a hand in designing and building a sacred space in the campsite that trainees and visitors will be able to enjoy for decades to come.

At the end of each day we reflected on how, through our interactions and activities and by practising the spiritual disciplines handed down to us, we can learn to love God, others and ourselves better.

IRELAND MORE than 90 students and staff from across Scotland descended on Kilgraston School, where sleep was at a premium but fun and faith were abundant, writes divisional youth specialist Adam Barber (West Scotland).

Go! was the theme for the week, looking at how we can be witnesses for Christ in our everyday lives. This was unpacked in five cell groups looking at the roots, resistance and reach of our witness, and our response to this privilege.

Every student chose a main option (brass, vocal, media, dance, drama or sport) and an elective (timbrel group, art, worship band,

What a week! We kayaked, sang campfire songs to God, searched the countryside for animals at night, built dens and swings, played games, enjoyed mountain biking, learnt how to complete a Rubik’s cube, danced in a silent disco under the stars… the list goes on!

We also spent a significant amount of time with members of the community. Hadleigh Farm is home to the Army’s employment training centre, which primarily works with people with additional support needs. We

The Ireland Division is actively encouraging the use of creative arts and this was evident through the camp’s activities. Worship and Bible study reflected the week’s theme, Lead, which followed the account of Peter in the book of Acts. There was plenty of downtime too, allowing students to let their hair down and come together through sport, quizzes, music making and, of course, food. The week concluded with a festival at Belfast Temple, featuring the A and B bands, choral ensemble, worship group and sports ministry.

Highlights included the choral piece ‘Trusting Jesus, That Is All’, ‘Seize The Day’ presented by the A band and a rousing rendition of ‘Baby Shark’ by the B band.

We thank God for a week full of fun and blessings.

NORTH LONDON, SOUTH LONDON AND SOUTH EAST WHAT a privilege to share with 140 students and 40 staff at the Swattenden Centre in Kent, declares divisional youth specialist Rachel Gash (South London).

The week’s theme was Kaleidoscope: Bringing Out The God Colours. Each day we focused on the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 as a blueprint for living for Christ.

Students signed up for a chosen stream (emerging faith, leadership, justice, art and creativity, dance, drama, sport, vocal, brass, media, worship or young leaders), with a break during the day’s activities for worship, small groups and lunch. After dinner, there 10

were three segments to the evening: Rumble (high-energy activity), Kairos (evening worship, with a speaker and time for response) and PM, a late night gathering for ‘chilled’ activities.

Laser tag and inflatables added to the fun, and great friendships were established and renewed. Most important were the significant moments with God when students made life-changing decisions.

Guests Lucy Grimble, Matt White, Captain Berri McKenna and J Vessel encouraged everyone to be their true self, crack on and shine so that the world can see ‘you ain’t like them’.

We pray that students and staff will reflect their God colours in their communities.

NORTH EAST ENGLAND HOW do I summarise such an amazing week? Laughing, crying, sleeping – no, not sleeping, reflects delegate Kira Green (Shildon).

We had great fun while sharing and deepening our faith with like-minded people.

From breakfast to bedtime we were challenged by the week’s theme, Now Is The Time. Every individual received a different calling as they explored the concept with the support of staff and other young Christians.

Midweek and final festivals gave us opportunities to celebrate and worship the mighty God who had brought us together and given each of us a unique journey to follow, with both joy and doubt along the way.

I was personally encouraged not just to want to do something but to go for it,

because, as we were frequently reminded, ‘now is the time’. If it doesn’t work out the way you wanted it to, talk to God – maybe his plan for your life isn’t what you quite hoped for or expected but, not to worry, he’s got it sorted!

After leaving the summer school, I continue to be challenged by the question: How will I allow God to shine through me in everything I do? After all, now is the time!

NORTH WEST ENGLAND AND NORTH WALES THIS year’s summer school welcomed more than 60 students aged between 12 and 25, divisional youth specialist Darren Highton reports.

Each day included Bible study, chosen activity options, time for reflection and discussion and an evening event.

The week’s theme, Fear-less, focused on how we can trust God through our fears and so learn to fear less. We learnt that we will always have fears, but God can help us overcome them.

We were encouraged to ‘park our fears’ by writing them down and covering the interior of a car with the notes. To remind us that God supports us through any fear, a promise from Scripture was handed out each day.

These were stored in a wooden box gifted to each student, which they could decorate.

Bible studies followed the story of Peter, who stepped out of the boat to meet Jesus.

Rather than focusing on his doubt, we thought about ‘daring greatly’ and how

trusting God empowers us to ‘step out of the boat’ in our lives. We also thought about his fear when he denied Jesus, then the transformation of the disciples as the Holy Spirit entered their lives.

Talking, praying, and worshipping together on the beach at sunset was a moment of blessing. We concluded the week with a celebration where friends and family fully appreciated the students’ talents expressed through song, dance, film and art.

SEVERN AND SOMERSET STUDENTS left summer school this year with a new ability to open up and a closer relationship with God, writes delegate Rachel Smith (Cheltenham Citadel).

We were helped by the amazing team to grow further in our faith as we explored the Beatitudes through activities, worship and discussion.

On Sunday we looked at the theme Lament, with Chell Leeder, which gave us the opportunity to open up about the difficulties we face, from the loss of a family member to the challenges of being an officer’s child.

A visit from Open Doors showed us the challenges Christians face on a daily basis in countries around the world where Christianity is the most persecuted religion.

Workshops throughout the week allowed us to build friendships and learn new skills, including different ways to worship with drama, dance and crochet. In our main streams – singing, sport, brass or worship band – we developed skills that many of us use in our churches and everyday life.

SOUTHERN

SUMMER school was a great, thoughtprovoking week that helped our relationship with God by appreciating how we are created, write delegates Sheridan Hylton and Katie Wileman (Winton). Each morning’s talk was linked to Ephesians 4:22–24 and included activities. The theme was explored with questions and answers in groups later in the day.

We each had to pick two streams that would contribute towards the final festival.

Options included brass, vocal, art, dance, worship leading and media. In the afternoons we had a session called B, which explored subjects that are relevant to young people in today’s society.

A Questions of Faith session was held, in which a panel answered questions we had regarding the Army and faith in general.

Free time consisted of different sport activities, such as combat archery or cricket, before an evening of fun and games. With activities such as moving roast dinner ingredients (including gravy!) with our mouths, a talent night and a silent disco, it was hilarious.

THIS year’s summer school was a week full of laughter, joy, challenge, prayer and much more, writes divisional youth specialist Laura Kingscott.

The theme was Love Is, with a focus on Scripture passages that describe what love is, such as 1 Corinthians 13.

Delegates could enjoy many styles of worship from traditional brass band to contemporary dance. A highlight for many was the opportunity in whole school prayers to encourage others by sharing the qualities we saw in them.

Two delegates share testimonies from the week: ‘The theme taught me what love truly is and that I will always be loved by God, no matter what. He has a plan set out for me and I need to follow that path no matter what temptations I face.

‘We learnt that love is patient, keeps no record of wrongs, is not self-seeking and always hopes. Knowing God loves me in such a way makes me feel so much better in myself.’

‘What better feeling is there than coming to the realisation that I am loved

by God, who has forgiven all my mistakes and made and moulded me into the person I am now? How amazing is that!

‘I have never felt truly loved and accepted by people in the way I do now, and I really cannot wait to see what the future holds for me, as I keep Jesus in the centre of everything I do.’

One Way Traffic The road to making an anti-slavery film Lieut-Colonel Jonathan Roberts discovers how Ian Bennett produced a feature film about human trafficking with members of Southport Corps

T

INA, Maggie and Goldie arrive in the UK from different parts of eastern Europe with the promise of work. They soon discover they have been trafficked and are enslaved before their futures develop in dramatically different ways. This is the plot of a feature film recently produced by Ian Bennett, an adherent member at Southport.

Ian explains how it came about: ‘One Sunday morning in July 2013 someone visited the corps to talk about the Army’s work with victims of human trafficking and showed a video of victims telling their stories. I didn’t feel it was making an impact and thought we needed to publicise the problem better. I had in mind a series of short dramatised documentaries.’

Ian has been involved in film-making for most of his life, so he had the 12

experience and expertise to make it happen. He started making films with two school friends in the early 1960s.

‘We were in a cine club,’ he remembers, ‘so we made films for club contests and they would be entered on behalf of the club into regional competitions. The three of us walked off with a number of awards!’

Ian later trained as a photographer and found work in major advertising studios in Manchester, while continuing to make films and develop scriptwriting skills in his spare time. His successful career included a spell in the Middle East running the media department for the world’s largest oil-producing company. Back in the UK he and his wife, Janet, eventually settled in Southport where they linked up with The Salvation Army.

As the idea of highlighting human

trafficking developed, what was going to be a series of short films turned into a feature called Tariro, which means ‘hope’ in Shona. Ian based the script on real case histories from the Army and the Riverside Foundation. Elements of a number of cases were condensed into the stories of the three main characters in the film.

The scripts were sent to potential cast members who submitted video auditions.

These were reviewed by a group that included David Lonsdale, who played David Stockwell in the TV series Heartbeat. He also played a character in Ian’s film.

‘The main cast and most of those in supporting roles were professionals,’ Ian says. ‘The majority travelled long distances for shoots, including the three female leads; all of them travelled at their own expense.’

Ian decided to involve corps folk, as he explains: ‘I dropped in some locals, either for bit parts where they didn’t have to speak, or where someone was doing something they were familiar with. So, the charity shop manager played the charity shop manager and the corps officer played the corps officer.’

He also set up a film school at the hall to train his crew.

Tariro was filmed in full HD during April and May 2014 and edited to a widescreen ratio. It was screened at Liverpool’s Plaza Cinema to an invited audience that September, stewarded by Salvationist Brian Camplin.

SHARING CREDITS CAST AND CREW REACTIONS Ian was happy with that, but wanted the film to have a bigger impact.

‘I was keen to get it into cinemas to spread the word,’ he enthuses. ‘I worked with several film distributors, but they said they couldn’t place it at that time.

One was really critical. He said it had a good storyline and great production values, but it was a little slow in places and sometimes the story was not as clear as it could be. The big drawback, though, was that it had a stereo soundtrack, and cinemas would only take surround-sound films.’

Despite that setback, Tariro managed to pick up a number of awards at international film festivals.

Ian then turned to other film projects, with the condition that his clients would make a donation to charity. These included a three-minute music video remake of the 1959 hit ‘The Bubble Car Song’, called BeepBeep, which raised £2,000 for The Salvation Army, and a feature about foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, called AfterAffects.

Three years after making Tariro Ian decided to watch it again one day at home – and had a revelation.

Remembering what the distributor had said, Ian thought: ‘That guy was dead right. What if I go back and re-edit it?’

But the film needed more work than that.

‘I filmed some extra scenes in Cyprus as well as the UK to fill in gaps in the story,’ he recalls. ‘I tightened it up, took some sequences out and shortened the whole thing to 108 minutes. The leading cast re-recorded their dialogue in Canada, Spain and Slovakia, which was then dubbed into the new surroundsound audio track.’

The new, improved cut has been renamed One Way Traffic. Ian is not envisaging a cinema release but wants to take advantage of online streaming, which is becoming increasingly popular.

‘If a distributor comes to me and says, “How about it?” then fine,’ he says. ‘But I’m looking at Amazon Prime Video as an option. People can then watch the film as part of a subscription or pay to download and keep it. Any money raised will go towards the Army’s work with victims of trafficking.’

Ian can also support corps wishing to screen the film by providing the movie backed up by a full promotional package.

GEOFF McNICOL Bandsman Camera operator I filmed a motorway scene, which was quite exciting. I hadn’t done anything like this before. The Army’s involvement in helping victims of trafficking is little known but the film helps to raise the Army’s profile. I’m glad to have been a part of it.

The actors were so good they made it real, and I thought, ‘This is awful.’ I hope the film helps people realise what trafficking is all about.

We did the scene and I thought it was just a practice, but Ian said, ‘That’s fine!’ It is a tremendous idea and I hope it is shown as much as possible.

She’d got no family that she knew of and no hope, but at the end she was talking about going to art school, just as a result of having been involved in this film.

I hadn’t done any acting before, so it was challenging, but I enjoyed doing it. The story itself is what makes the film. It was an outstanding story and it comes over extremely well.

We’ve all seen this kind of thing on the news and it washes over you; but to sit down with that as the only subject, it can only do good.

My wife and I were quite comfortable about our home being used for filming because it was our little way of supporting the work of the Army. In April this year it was a Golden Award winner at the International Screen Awards and in August it was selected for the Universal Film Festival held in Kansas City, USA. It is a film with a message – or rather, two messages as Ian explains: ‘One message is that trafficking is happening and could involve anyone.

Driving victims to safety For Annual Day of Prayer for Victims of Human Trafficking (22 September) volunteer driver Emilly Silva talks to Volunteer Development Manager Claire Bonham

M

ANY of you will be aware of The Salvation Army’s work to support victims of modern slavery, but do you know the vital role that volunteers play?

As part of the Army’s government contract to manage specialist support services for adult victims of modern slavery in England and Wales, trained volunteers offer a number of services.

These include acting as first responders, who interview potential victims of trafficking, and as drivers and chaperones, who transport vulnerable victims to safe houses.

These journeys are an incredible ministry, and a profound way to show Christ’s love in action. Even if volunteers might not exchange many words with the person they are transporting, the kindness they display through their actions represents a positive interaction and a glimpse of hope for the future at a critical moment in that person’s life.

Since the Army started providing specialist support to victims of modern slavery in 2011, it has helped more than 8,000 people begin the long journey to recovery. This is made possible through dedicated volunteers such as Emilly Silva, who lives in London with her husband, Allan, and works as the programme co-ordinator at Faith House. In her spare time, Emilly is a volunteer driver.

WHAT INTERACTION DO YOU HAVE WITH THE PEOPLE YOU ARE ESCORTING? I never ask questions. That is not my role. I concentrate on their immediate needs, not the bigger picture of what may have got them to this point. I tell them where we are going and approximately how long it will take us to get there.

If people talk, of course, I listen. I can speak Portuguese and Italian, which can help if they have limited English and can speak those languages.

Quite often, when we get in the car and we are on the motorway, people will fall asleep. I can tell how exhausted they are. It breaks my heart sometimes if the person is about the same age as me.

HOW DO YOU HELP? My role as a volunteer driver means that I can be called upon to chaperone potential victims of modern slavery by escorting them to a place of safety, usually by car but sometimes by train.

I receive a text on my mobile from the national transport co-ordinator telling me that someone has been identified in my area and needs to be escorted anywhere in the country, usually some distance away from where they currently are.

The pick-up will usually be a short while later, which can mean getting out of bed in the middle of the night, but if a person needs collecting from one place and taking to another for their own safety, their need at that point is far greater than mine and I’m more than

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER? One Friday lunchtime sitting at my desk, I learnt about the Army’s role in supporting victims of modern slavery in the weekly news bulletin. There was an appeal for volunteer drivers and I knew straight away this was something I could do. I spoke to my line manager and to Allan and then applied. I was delighted to be accepted.

Modern slavery is happening all around us, in our neighbourhoods, in our towns, on our streets. On the days or nights I get called out, I know I have made a difference in someone’s life. I have petrol in my car and I can play this small role in helping someone, so why wouldn’t I?

The number of referrals and journeys our volunteers are undertaking has increased significantly – up 106 per cent between 2015 and 2018.

We particularly need volunteers who are able to start journeys in the central London area, people who are willing to be drivers or chaperones and who have the capacity to respond quickly to requests. You will not be expected to respond to all of them, just whenever works for you. Volunteers will receive training and support from the Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery Unit, plus reasonable expenses.

The parable of the good Samaritan Major Nick Coke challenges us to demonstrate God’s boundless grace STUDY PASSAGE: LUKE 10:25–37

‘W

HO is my neighbour?’ an expert in the Law asked Jesus (v29). Without a doubt, this remains a key question today.

Not long ago, I wrote a short blog post for Refugee Week celebrating the Army’s wonderful work around the territory where refugees are being welcomed. In response, I received a message from a Christian telling me that I was wrong, that we were not called to offer hospitality to people from other countries or religions, and should put ‘our own’ first. On reading it, my mind turned to the parable of the good Samaritan.

Perhaps the most common interpretation of this parable is the call to help a person in need on the road of life.

This is an important strand to the multi-layered story, but it is not the only

one. Another important point is tied up with the question that precipitates it.

Verse 27 tells us that the expert who asked the question already knew that he was called to love his neighbour as himself. That was never in doubt. But he may have had a hidden agenda: to justify his belief that the category of ‘neighbour’ only applied to those who shared his ethnicity, culture and religious worldview.

The parable of the good Samaritan is Jesus’ way of dismantling that view.

QUESTIONS Why might the question of who your neighbour is be relevant today?

O Where have you encountered a put-our-own-first culture?

O

The key to unlocking the parable is the complex relationship between the Jews and the Samaritans in the 1st century AD.

There were ethnic tensions. The Samaritans were descendants of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh who had married outside the boundary of faith – a sin in the eyes of some.

There were religious tensions.

Samaritans regarded Mount Gerizim rather than Jerusalem as the location of the Temple and as the proper place for worship and pilgrimage (see John 4:19 and 20).

There were political tensions. Jews and Samaritans had each accused the other of colluding with forces invading their regions. History records that this rivalry led to atrocities committed by both sides over centuries.

Given this context, we can start to appreciate how shocking this story would have sounded to a Jewish audience. Jesus, however, didn’t stop after addressing the expert’s question.

If that were his only point, he would have made the Samaritan the victim in the story.

In a masterstroke, Jesus pushed his point further: he made the Samaritan the hero. In doing so, he forced his listeners to recognise neighbourly behaviour from the person they least expected to show it.

Jesus closed the parable by posing the question: ‘Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?’ (v36). The ‘three’, of course, were the Levite, the priest and the Samaritan.

Only one of them acted like a neighbour: the Samaritan. His ‘mercy’ (v37) and ‘pity’ (v33), as well as his practical care and generosity, set him apart from the

others. Being a neighbour had nothing at all to do with his religious or cultural identity.

QUESTIONS How does your behaviour demonstrate that you love your neighbour?

O When have you been on the receiving end of neighbourly behaviour from an unexpected source?

O

Jesus told his Jewish listeners to go and be like the Samaritan. Imagine the gasps as Jesus made this last remark!

In one short story, he turned the conventional way of thinking on its head: neighbourliness was not to be defined by religious identity but by merciful action.

If we’re honest, this can be just as challenging to us today. We have all encountered self-professed Christians who seem to act less like Jesus than

do those of different faiths or no faith.

Ethnic, political and religious tensions are also as prevalent now as they were in Jesus’ time. Today, we might label them as ‘identity politics’ or a ‘culture war’.

As humans, we formulate our own boundaries and conditions to determine what makes someone righteous, but this parable seems to caution against those being the priority. Instead, perhaps Jesus’ aim was to call us to extend the boundaries of love and mercy to the whole world. All are our neighbours and all deserve our mercy. Furthermore, let us expect to discover God’s boundless grace even in those we least expect to find it.

NEW COMMITMENTS

AYR: Eddie Kerr, Anne Thomson, Betty Campbell and Elizabeth Gordon were welcomed as adherent members by corps officer Major Linda Watson. All four have been Christians for many years, but have chosen to serve God through the sphere of The Salvation Army. – L. W.

GAINSBOROUGH: There was a full hall to celebrate the enrolment of Zoe Bott as a soldier by Recruiting Sergeant Major Chris Standing.

Zoe started attending with her two young children several years ago.

In her testimony she expressed that she always felt welcome and that she fitted in. One side of the hall was filled with family and friends, who supported Zoe on her special day. She had been an adherent member but wanted to become a soldier and wear the uniform. Major Chris took Zoe through soldiership classes and led the enrolment alongside corps officer Captain Wendy Brown. Zoe’s son, Fabian, played the euphonium solo ‘A New Direction’. – P. H.

MARGATE: Mandy Hart was welcomed as an adherent member by corps officer Major Richard Oliver. Mandy lives near the hall and used to listen outside until one day she dared to go in. She was worried that she would not be accepted, but found a warm welcome and decided to stay. – L. C.

BELFAST TEMPLE: Many friends supported Ann Chambers as she committed to serving as a soldier. She spoke eloquently of her faith journey, her deep experience of God throughout her life and how, in recent months, she had felt soldiership was the next step for her. She was enrolled by corps officer Major Graham Wood. They are pictured with Recruiting Sergeant Iris Corry and Corps Secretary Tom McAuley. – K. W. STEVENAGE: Corps officer Major Wendy Goodman welcomed Jonathan Rawlings and Clair Hill as adherent members. Clair is a carer at a home for people who suffer from mental health issues. She had attended meetings and activities for several years. Jonny first walked into the hall two and a half years ago. In his testimony he shared: ‘It was as if the service was written for me. Now, with the help of the Lord, I am two years and three months free of my addiction to alcohol. Because of this my partner and I have both chosen to pursue Christ. The best advice I could give anyone is to stop chasing after the things of this world and start chasing after God.’ – S. H.

LETTERS

THE WRITING’S ON THE WALL THE 7 September issue of Salvationist was particularly interesting, not just because of the wonderful review of Gordon Taylor’s new biography of William Booth or the latest historical article by General John Larsson (Retired), or even the lively letters on headgear. It was the photo of Buckingham Corps on page 18 with the text ‘To the uttermost he saves’ on its wall. What a blessing! I know many corps in years past had biblical text on their walls or mercy seats. How many still do?

IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS AFTER reading the correspondence in Salvationist regarding headwear, I felt compelled to put pen to paper.

Having served as an officer for 35 years both in the UK and overseas, I know from first-hand experience the importance and value of formal and informal uniform. What I find disturbing is that yet again the focus appears to be on external matters. Previously it was on the logo we use. Now the focus is on caps versus baseball caps. I respectfully ask, in the

midst of all that’s happening in our country and beyond, is it not time to pull together and not allow ourselves to become divided? Surely our focus should be on God’s calling and mission for The Salvation Army and whether we are being faithful to that. What does the Spirit say?

A SOCIAL AND SPIRITUAL MISSION IT is good that ‘Rear-mirror views’ by General John Larsson (Retired) will be published in book form. These articles show the lasting development of the spiritual and social ministry of The Salvation Army in the 13 years to 1890. One of the articles quoted from The History Of The Salvation Army, headed

‘The General’s change of mind’, without mentioning everything that influenced this. William Booth had once concluded that early charitable mission pauperised the needy but he came to believe that the mission of the Army was as much temporal as spiritual.

It seems that Frank Smith was one of the ‘social’ Salvationists who highlighted to William Booth the necessity of social reform. Together with Suzie Swift he had a big influence over the landmark publication In Darkest England And The Way Out, and they probably authored much of it.

Smith was the Army’s first Social Wing Commissioner from 1888 to 1890, when there was a substantial expansion of social services, but I can’t see any mention of him in the ‘Rearmirror views’ series. He was mentioned in an article in Salvationist 5 July 2003 – titled ‘The “Red Major” airbrushed out of Army history’ – that reviewed a book by Norman Murdoch, which was published in the USA, where Smith had previously worked.

According to Murdoch, Smith advocated for corps ministry to include social service and soul saving, so he would approve of many corps programmes today. However, Smith decided to resign from the Army while remaining on good terms and went into politics with the British Labour Party.

One hundred and thirty years have passed and I wonder if we have yet got the right appreciation of the place of political and social reform in our holistic mission to save souls, grow saints and serve suffering humanity.

TRIBUTES LIEUT-COLONEL MARY CARBY ONE of ten children, Mary grew up in the village of Milnsbridge, Huddersfield. As an active member of the corps she heard God calling her into full-time service and followed her two brothers, John and Eric, and sister, Pearl, into the International Training College (ITC) in 1948, becoming a member of the Peacemakers Session.

Mary’s first appointment was to the Mayflower centre in Plymouth.

Thereafter she was appointed to the Mothers’ Hospital in Clapton before the Mayflower centre in Belfast and a probation home in Cheltenham.

Captain Mary was appointed as side officer at the ITC in 1959, remaining for a total of 22 years and finally holding the rank lieut-colonel and the position of

assistant training principal. She is remembered for the impact she made on the hundreds of cadets passing through the college over this period.

Mary retired in 1986 after 38 years of service, returning to Southport to care for her sister and live in the Carby family home. Her experience and strong faith were evident in the corps and this spilt out into the wider community. Many people in nearby churches and businesses came to know her.

Promoted to Glory at the age of 93, Mary will be remembered for her quiet sincerity, deep relationship with the Lord and zest for sharing her faith. She had a profound influence on her family members; many of them were encouraged in their faith by this gracious woman of God. – G. M. COMMISSIONER ROSE RIVERS ROSE Ross, born in 1931, entered training from Aberdeen Torry in 1955. At the time of her marriage she was the commanding officer at Shettleston in Glasgow. After her marriage to Bill Rivers they served together at Godalming, Newbury, Portsmouth North, Alton and Penge.

Between the years 1970 and 1977 Rose ministered at the Army’s social homes in south London, while Bill was private secretary to the General.

Over eight years she was the divisional director of women’s organisations for South-West Scotland, Canterbury and then North London, while Bill served as the divisional commander for each. In 1985 she was appointed to NHQ and Bill was appointed to IHQ. SALVATIONIST PRICE INCREASE After careful consideration the price of Salvationist will rise from 60p to 70p a week from the 5 October 2019 issue. This is the first increase since April 2006, when the price rose from 50p. Production costs have not stood still over the past 13 years and, while a price increase has been resisted for some time, it is now unavoidable. If Salvationist kept pace with inflation since 2006 the price would now be 86p!

In January 1992, with the rank of commissioner, Rose was appointed co-ordinator of the International Year of the Family at IHQ. While holding this appointment she was elected national chairperson of Women’s World Day of Prayer.

Bill and Rose entered retirement in 1994, continuing to live in Beckenham, where Penge was their spiritual home.

– B. R. FREDA FLEGG, IPSWICH BRAMFORD ROAD AUNTIE Freda, as everyone knew her, was promoted to Glory in her 100th year, failing in her ambition to receive congratulations from the Queen but instead receiving a crown from the King.

She was a member of the corps for more than three quarters of its 120-year existence, serving as corps treasurer, songster secretary and sunbeam and guide leader, as well as

in the Sunday school and the songsters.

An unrivalled fundraiser, stalwart of open-air meetings and keen member of the over-60 club and Bible study group, she encouraged her friends and neighbours to become regular visitors and soldiers.

Auntie Freda was a resilient, independent person, who drove from her teenage years until well into her nineties and travelled abroad extensively when such a thing was uncommon. Her family and wide circle of friends all knew that they were supported daily in her prayers. – M. G.
