Have you ever been to a festival before? You might have been to a music festival, or even to a food festival. Those kinds of festival are great fun, but there’s one festival that we think is probably more exciting than any other! This is a festival that’s sure to get your heart racing about as fast as a car shooting around a track – it’s the Goodwood 2025 Festival of Speed!

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an event that celebrates motorsports (which are sports involving vehicles). Racing cars and motorbikes from the past and present will be on display, and drivers from all over the world will be put to the test. This isn’t a new festival – it’s been running every year since 1993. However, we reckon that this year’s festival might be unlike any that’s come before.

That’s because the main event at the 2025 Festival of Speed is the F1 75 Celebrations, which is a special event put on to –just as its name suggests – celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Formula 1 World Championship. People at the festival will get to see some of the best cars and drivers from Formula 1’s history take on Goodwood’s famous racing track – the Hillclimb!

As well as this special celebration, festival attendees can expect to see some stunning motorbike and aeroplane shows. In fact, there’ll be so much going on that they probably won’t know where to look!

The 2025 Festival of Speed started on Thursday 10 July and ends on Sunday 13 July (kids can attend for free with a paying grown-up). If you like the sound of watching some racing cars in action, but can’t make it to Goodwood this weekend, have a look online to find a racetrack near you. Many will be holding events through the summer.

Goodwood’s Festival of Speed looks super fun! Sometimes I feel like my life is a festival of speed too! I always seem to be rushing around – from school drop-offs to work, or drivin here, there and everywhere (never at race car speed, though, I promise!). Even the year is speeding past – it’s mid-July and I feel like it was only just Christmas! Maybe you feel like your life is always on super-speed mode too.

Despite the busyness of life, we should all try to make time to slow down. Even Jesus, with everything he had going on, took time to be alone and talk to God. It’s in these quiet moments that we can really focus and chat to God. So in between school, homework, clubs, parties and other activities, try to find at least one moment of quiet this week to slow down, talk to God and see what he has to say to you.

Read the comment below about showing love to others

WBe a Sheep!

e spent more than a month learning about sheep in Psalm 23, and last week we learnt about the lost sheep. So guess what this week’s Bible cartoon is all about. Sheep… AGAIN! Honestly, all of these sheep are driving me baa-nanas.

Even though I’m un-baa-lievably fed up with hearing about sheep, Jesus does use sheep in this parable to make a brilliant point. Jesus shows that a shepherd knows the difference between sheep and goats. Sure, sheep and goats both like the word ‘baa’ – but there are a few differences.

Just like a shepherd knows his sheep from his goats, Jesus can tell who is really following him. He knows this based on the way that people live.

Know Your Sheep?

Do you think you could spot the difference between a sheep and a goat? The first drawing is of a sheep and the second is of a goat. Spot the five differences between these pictures to prove that you really know your sheep!

A true follower of Jesus is always being changed by God to be more like him. Jesus is full of love for others, so one of the signs that someone follows Jesus is that they show love to others too.

It’s easy to love your friends and family, but someone who follows God should show love to everyone! This might look like helping people who are experiencing homelessness. Or it might look like talking to the kid at school who has no one to play with.

What should really make a Christian stand out is that they’re overflowing with love. So are you a Christian? If you are, then show love to others! Every time you love people who are in need, you show Jesus that you care about him too!

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Jesus’ Baptism

Around 30 years after the birth of Jesus, Elizabeth’s son, John, began to prepare the people of Judea for the work Jesus was going to do. He did this by baptising people (which involved someone saying sorry for the wrong things they’d done, and then being dunked in water).

One day, John’s cousin came to be baptised. Only, this man was more than just John’s cousin – he was Jesus, the Son of God. As Jesus rose up from under the water, the Holy Spirit came down from the sky like a dove, and a voice could be heard from the heavens!

After being baptised, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to the desert, where he spent 40 days without food or water, and was tempted by the Devil to do wrong things. However, Jesus was perfect – he wouldn’t do a thing wrong!

Unbelievable Animals

Forget cats and dogs – there are some animals that are so strange that it’s hard to believe they actually exist! Over the next few weeks, we’ll discover some of the wackiest!

Amazon River Dolphins

What’s wacky about a dolphin that lives in the Amazon River? We’ll give you a clue… The other name it’s known by is the pink river dolphin! No, we’re not making it up – there really is a dolphin with pink skin. In fact, an Amazon River dolphin’s skin becomes pinker and pinker as it gets older!

It’s well known that the Tower of London was used as a place to hold prisoners, but did you know that it was also used as a zoo? In 1235, King Henry III was given three pet leopards, which inspired him to turn part of the Tower into a zoo. Over time, lions, elephants and even a polar bear lived there! The zoo closed in 1835.

DSoft Toy Competition

1937? It’s been almost 90 years since Snow White’s and Disney has continued to create plenty of spectacular films. In each of those films, they’ve introduced us to some of the most unforgettable characters we’ve ever come across! It’s so hard to choose who the best Disney character is, so it’s a good job that there are Disney Doorables of so many different characters. There have been 90 million Disney Doorables figures sold since 2019, and now Disney Doorables are available in Simba’s plush collection. These 25cm super-soft plushies are weighted so that they can stand freely. There are so many characters to collect, including Stitch and Angel, so that means you can have your own cuddly version of your Disney fave ready for snuggle time!

For your opportunity to win your own Disney Doorables soft toy by Simba, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk

Remember to put ‘Disney Doorables Soft Toy Competition’ in the subject box. Your entry needs to reach us by Friday 8 August when the winners will be chosen. Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

During July and August in 2024, more than 85,000 people took part in a challenge that involved lots (and lots) of counting outside. They weren’t counting the number of planes that they saw, or the number of kites. They weren’t counting birds, trees or worms!

They were counting one of the most beautiful creatures that nature has to offer –butterflies! They were taking part in an amazing event called the Big Butterfly Count.

Keeping Count

You might be glad to know that the Big Butterfly Count wasn’t just a one-off event. In fact, it started in 2010, and it’s been taking place every year since!

This year, the Big Butterfly Count starts this Friday (18 July) and ends on 18 August. Since so many people will be taking part, this will be the largest survey of butterflies in the whole world!

What’s the Point?

If you decide to take part in the Big Butterfly Count, then you’ll actually be taking part in some really important research. That’s because butterflies aren’t just stunning insects – they’re also a crucial part of our environment as both pollinators and members of the food chain.

Research has shown that butterflies are under threat, so the Big Butterfly Count is a fab opportunity to see how well butterflies are doing this year.

Protect Wildlife Big Butterfly Count

Scientists will be able to use the information gathered in the Big Butterfly Count to come up with a plan to protect butterflies. They’ll also use it to help them understand the impact of climate change. In other words, by taking part in the Big Butterfly Count, you’re doing your part to help look after this country’s wildlife.

Your Turn

Hopefully you now understand why the Big Butterfly Count is such a brilliant idea, but you might still be a bit nervous about taking part. You might be imagining that you’ll have to sit in the middle of the woods for hours on end, counting thousands of butterflies until you’re so tired that you fall asleep!

However, taking part in the Big Butterfly Count is actually really easy. All you need to do is…

Pick a place outside. This could be your garden, a park, a field at school, a forest or somewhere else entirely. To get the best results, you’ll want to go to your place on a bright, sunny day.

Count for 15 minutes. Start counting the different types of butterfly that you see over the course of 15 minutes. You should use a list created by the Big Butterfly Count organisers to help you know what kind of butterfly you’ve seen. You can find this list at bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/charts.

Add your count online. Add your count to the Big Butterfly Count website at bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/map. This will also show you a map of all the different counts across the UK!

Go again! You can do as many counts as you like, in as many different places. Just make sure you don’t mix your different counts together. It’s OK if you don’t see any butterflies – you should still record online that you haven’t spotted any!

Beautiful Butterflies

If you take part in the Big Butterfly Count, you might see…

Common blues. These are the most common butterflies in the UK and Ireland. Even though they have ‘blue’ in their name, female common blues often have brown wings.

Gatekeepers. These butterflies are often found where flowers are growing in gateways, and along the edges of fields.

Speckled woods. Unlike most butterflies, speckled woods feed on honeydew in the treetops, and don’t really feed on flowers.

Peacocks. Named after the peacock bird, these butterflies have spectacular wings with beautiful patterns, which helps them to confuse predators. Join in with the Big Butterfly Count to
