SALVATIONIST

WHAT’S in a name? In last week’s issue, we celebrated the commissioning of the Champions of the Mission session. Sessional names often have significance to those being commissioned, as they are charged to hold to the precept of that name and to live it out.
In this week’s issue, alongside reports of last week’s celebrations, we also list the names of the officers, territorial envoys and those charged with spiritual leadership within this territory, some of whom will be taking up new appointments in the coming weeks.
Many will just be names to you, others you will know and others will be significant to you as your paths have crossed over the years.
What’s in a name? God reminds us in Isaiah 49:16: ‘See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands’ (New Living Translation).
God knows our names and he knows the plans that he has for each one of us. Whether we are facing new challenges or returning to something familiar, he goes before us and invites us to follow him.
May we each answer yes and be the disciples that he is calling each of us to be.

As spiritual leaders across the territory move between appointments this week, Major Sarah Evans reflects on change
ON Thursday (17 July), your corps or centre may have welcomed a new spiritual leader. Perhaps you were looking for a leader who could hit the ground running and make an immediate impact.
Salvation Army officers have entered into a covenant with God and The Salvation Army and they step out into
Read Colossians 3:12–14. How can you put this advice about love and gentleness into action in your worshipping community?
Read Isaiah 6:8. Where is God calling you to serve?
Pray for all spiritual leaders who moved this week, claiming for them the promise of Philippians 4:13.
Pray for the children of officers, who may be sad about leaving behind friends and anxious about settling into new schools or colleges. Pray for older parents and dependants of officers, who may be worried, especially if their children are moving further away from them in answer to God’s calling.
Pray for corps and centres who do not have appointed leaders, asking for God’s strength and wisdom as they seek the way ahead.
each new appointment in faith and trust, believing that their leaders have sought the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to appoint them where God can best use them for the sake of his Kingdom. However, this does not make moving to a new appointment easy.
For spiritual leaders and those welcoming them, this is a time of change and transition. Change is situational: a new appointment with new responsibilities, new things to learn, new skills to acquire, new people to meet, a new home into which to fit your belongings and a new area to get to know, including the locations of shops, schools, doctors and dental surgeries and a new place of worship.
Transition is different: it is the psychological process people go through to come to terms with a new situation. This includes saying goodbye to familiar friends and sources of social support, and the gradual building up of new relationships and sources of psychological and spiritual safety. As change and transition management expert William Bridges used to say, ‘It’s not so much the change that is hard but the transition.’
How, then, should we approach this time? I recently attended a wellbeing conference at Chelmsford Cathedral, the highlight of which was an interview with Terry Waite, former international envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury and a high-profile negotiator for hostage release until he himself was imprisoned in Lebanon from 1987 to 1991. It was thrilling to hear of his resilience throughout 1,763 days of
mostly solitary confinement – chained to a radiator without access to books or daylight – and his Christian witness to his captors, but what intrigued me most was his response when asked: ‘How did you adapt to your new life after your release?’ He replied: ‘I learnt to go gently!’
The opportunity was there for him to return to a busy whirl of globetrotting on the celebrity speaker circuit, but Terry recognised that the time of transition needed to be handled with care. Like deep-sea diving, if you come up too quickly, you risk contracting the potentially fatal condition of decompression sickness, commonly known as ‘the bends’. And so, his advice to anyone going through a time of significant life change: ‘Go gently!’
Going gently means showing kindness, not expecting your new leader to know everything, allowing them to be themselves, and being prayerful and patient. Archbishop Stephen Cottrell said: ‘When someone hits the ground running, there is no guarantee they are going in the right direction!’ The better leader is one who hits the ground kneeling and leads from an inner well of contemplation and holiness derived from time spent with God. Offering our leaders the space to develop these inner resources is perhaps the greatest welcome gift that we can give them.

Linda Bond, Brian Peddle)
NXIETY has always been a massive part of my life. My anxiety is like a flock of hungry birds that follow me wherever I go. They click their beaks irritably during the day, beady eyes shining with a dangerous thirst. With every wingbeat they amplify the sound of my fears and worries, shrieking mistruths. During the night is when they thrive. I climb into bed like I’m boarding a boat, about to be untethered and set adrift in an all too familiar storm.
Out here, the darkness an endless, roiling sea, there’s nowhere for me to hide. The birds swarm overhead. Their talons catch, beaks scratch, and this routine is as familiar as it is unbearable. The boat rocks with the waves, threatening to capsize and drag me down under, spiralling.
This is what it is like for me living with anxiety, under constant watch and attack. There is no escaping this, the birds hoot. You are alone. My heart stammers, tripping over itself in a bid to beat out of my chest.
But over the howling of the storm, the baying of the birds, and the thundering of my heart, I somehow hear … snores? It takes me a moment to gather my senses before a realisation dawns. It’s a truth I once invited into my heart and now lives there, whispering with every pulse: ‘I’m here.’
In the dark and the clamouring chaos, I’ve failed to spot the man fast asleep in the stern of the boat. He snores loudly, perfectly peaceful in the midst of all this havoc. If I weren’t so painfully relieved, I might feel silly for forgetting he was there.
Because this man has beaten the birds to it every time. He’s been following me around since before I could talk – before
I could breathe. He’s stuck to my side like glue, in the moments I’ve gleefully sung his name, and the moments I’ve shoved at his chest with all my might. He cradled the fragile pieces of my mind in his hands while I was one shallow breath from a panic attack.
I call his name and he rouses. The birds squawk in protest, reeling back, and I laugh. Jesus gazes out at the tumultuous sea and commands: ‘Be still!’
This power, this unshakeable presence, is where the Holy Spirit impacts my life the most. It reshapes everything. The sea, the storm and the birds all fall silent at his words. A peace, warm and radiant, engulfs me. It soothes the jagged planes of my mind, wrapping around me like
Galatians 3:28 says: ‘There is no longer Jew or Greek; there is no longer slave or free; there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus’ (New Revised Standard Version). Ours is a diverse congregation and it has been for many years, predominantly comprising Salvationists who have come to the UK from other territories in Africa and the Caribbean. We’re a young congregation too, most aged under 50, working hard with young families.
On Sundays we provide a take-home sheet that includes prayer and discipleship activities that can be done together as a family. We have a WhatsApp prayer group, which fits in well with people’s busy lives. We encourage people to love God and love others through radical hospitality and working in partnership with other groups.
For many years the corps has hosted a weekly Ukrainian community centre. The centre runs English and Ukrainian classes, cooking and gardening activities, and music lessons. It’s about helping to integrate people into UK society, but also to retain something of their own heritage and culture, particularly among their children. Our congregation is growing, partly due to young families and people who have connected through community activities or the partnerships we have and through word of mouth and people boldly inviting others.
Children actively participate in worship and we have a small brass learners’ group who contribute regularly. We have two baby and toddler clubs across one morning and operate a baby bank. A quarterly Messy Church aims to bring in the children who attend the corps and the families who attend midweek activities.
A Scout group use our building two evenings a week – they hope to launch a Squirrels group soon to complement the existing Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. The scout leader attends worship and we’ve hosted church parades in connection with St George’s Day.
There is a family feel to the corps that
people appreciate, and we’ve been exploring how we can enhance fellowship and discipleship. Two other churches use our building on Sundays, and we’ve adjusted the programme with them so that we have more time after our service to start doing fellowship meals.
We’re blessed to have been awarded silver for our Eco Church endeavours, helped by us being a pilot corps for solar panel installation. The panels provide most of the electricity we use on a dayto-day basis. Currently this is via direct feed, but the system has the capacity to include battery storage in the future.
We have a small garden with a lawned area and raised growing beds, where we grow flowers and some fruit and vegetables. In celebration of creation, we’ve done prayer activities around planting flowers and distributing wildflower seeds for people to use in their own gardens. The Scout group have also gained their gardening badges by taking care of a designated area.
The baby bank recycles and redistributes clothing and equipment that has frequently only been used for a short time. We also have two well-used SATCoL clothing banks at the hall, which help to ensure textiles don’t go directly to landfill.
Pray for donations of equipment to our baby bank. Clothes are never a problem,
but buggies and prams are always in demand, especially the rare double buggy.
We work in partnership with the council’s Learning Action Team to deliver English for Speakers of Other Languages classes, which are predominantly attended by asylum seekers or people who have been impacted by modern slavery. Please pray for them.

Captain Alison Hutchings reminds us that mercy is a sign of a transformed heart
AS we journey through the Beatitudes, we see they are presented in clusters. The first three beatitudes – Matthew 5:3–5 –address our human condition and frailty before God. As we become increasingly aware of our brokenness and need for God, we begin to hunger for righteousness (see v6). We then move into three characteristics of this righteousness in verses 7 to 9, the first of which is mercy. ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy’ (Matthew 5:7).
The word ‘merciful’ comes from the Greek – eleēmōn – meaning ‘actively compassionate’, particularly towards the suffering. This helps shape our understanding of Matthew 5:7. An example of this is the parable of the good Samaritan (see Luke 10:25–35), where we observe the stages of mercy as seeing someone’s distress, being moved by compassion and then doing something about it, whether they deserve it or not.
Being merciful isn’t something that we leap into. Indeed, it isn’t something that comes particularly naturally. If it’s merely an act of duty or obligation, we fall into the dangerous position the religious leaders in Jesus’ time found themselves.
Mercy starts with God, so we need to first understand the extent of mercy that we have received: our salvation is, itself, an act of God’s mercy and love. ‘He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy’ (Titus 3:5).
God, by nature, is ‘merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth’ (Exodus 34:6 New King James Version), an idea that links closely with his characteristic as a forgiving Father (see Luke 15). Indeed, the statement
‘blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy’ sits beautifully alongside words from the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:12: ‘Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.’ What great mercy and forgiveness has God shown us through Jesus Christ. What great example has been set before us!
Look back over the first four Beatitudes and reflect on how you have seen God’s mercy in your life.
Do you crave righteousness?
In your life, what is the connection between receiving mercy and giving mercy?
Mercy was at the forefront of Christ’s earthly ministry. Two passages that underpin his attitude and compassion for others are Matthew 25:35–40 and Luke 4:18 and 19. In these passages, Christ emphasises his mercy to the marginalised, the vulnerable, the impoverished, the broken and the oppressed – those our world often disregards or rejects. This is our example as we, in turn, speak straight into the heartache and sorrow of our communities.
Sadly, mercy does not come naturally to our world. Revenge, punishment, power, totalitarianism. Even our justice system can fall short of being merciful. In James 2:13 we read: ‘Judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.’
The parable of the unforgiving servant (see Matthew 18:21–35) is a warning
against receiving mercy but refusing to give it – something that is so often characteristic of our society’s culture. However, as followers of Jesus, we must not conform to the pattern of the world. General John Gowans’ view of mission included the phrase ‘to serve suffering humanity’. In part, this captures what it means to show mercy.
As disciples of Jesus, we learn that mercy is not an optional extra; it’s not something that we do as an act of charity. Rather, it’s a command from God: ‘Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful’ (Luke 6:36). It’s certainly not easy, but it’s essential if we are to reflect God’s love and righteousness in our lives.
As we recognise our personal need for mercy and forgiveness, the outward working of this is an obedient heart that shows mercy and forgiveness to others. Being merciful becomes a sign of a transformed heart. Once we truly grasp something of who God is and his mercy towards us, we won’t be able to stop this from overflowing in our attitude towards others. The psalmist writes that we’ve tasted and seen that the Lord is good (see Psalm 34:8) and our past transgressions have been blotted out from God’s memory (see Psalm 103:12).
Paul comments that we’ve been brought into the divine love of God’s family (see Ephesians 1:5).
Why is it often hard to extend mercy, even after receiving it?
How does showing mercy sit with being just?
Should a merciful person show mercy in all circumstances?
How can we apply this to everyday life? Living mercifully is certainly countercultural, and we’re called to live to a different standard from the world. Love your enemies (see Matthew 5:43 and 44). Forgive, as you have been forgiven (see Ephesians 4:32). Welcome refugees, people experiencing homelessness and poverty, children who no longer have parents (see Zechariah 7:9 and 10). Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with God (see Micah 6:8). We do all these things not just because Jesus commanded us, but because of who he is creating us to be. In doing so, we will be blessed. We align ourselves with God’s nature and are participants in God’s work of reconciliation and redemption. What greater joy is there than to be part of God’s mission for the world? What greater blessing is there than walking in a closer relationship with God?
In the song ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness, O God My Father’ (SASB 26), we are reminded of God’s great mercy, love and compassion, and the difference they can make to us. Meditate on the words ‘morning by morning new mercies I see’ and ‘pardon for sin and a peace that endureth’.
In what ways is God asking you to grow more like him in adopting a posture of mercy?

SATURDAY 19 JULY: CARE FOR CREATION – FOREST FIRES
Last September, around 4,000 trees at the Arco Verde Family Integration centre in Brazil burnt down and the children, families and participants were devastated. Pray for the staff as they work through this crisis and minister to their communities. by Major Heather Poxon (Territorial Environmental Officer)
SUNDAY 20 JULY: SABBATH PRAYER – FIRST-YEAR CADETS ON SUMMER PLACEMENT
Thank you for the Keepers of the Covenant session. You love them and you have chosen them for your holy work. Glorify yourself through them and guide them by your Spirit. Give them wisdom and fill them with your peace. Bless them in the name of your Son. by Lieutenant Imrich Carny
MONDAY 21 JULY: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS – IRELAND DIVISION
Fledgling ministries are emerging in unexpected places across the division as local people see a need and respond with practical and spiritual support. We’re just about to appoint a community chaplain and have some opportunities for closer working relationships between our centres and corps in Dublin and Belfast. Pray for an openness to God’s leading and discernment over next steps. by Major Jonathan Rouffet (Divisional Leader)
TUESDAY 22 JULY: SERVING AND CARING – CORPS WITHOUT APPOINTED OFFICERS
‘Cwm is a former mining community, and the corps hasn’t had an appointed officer for three years. Volunteer local officers give a lot of time to ensure that the mission and ministry continues, and a retired officer from another corps is giving them much-needed pastoral support,’ says Major Mary Wolfe. Pray for those working hard to provide leadership in corps without appointed officers. Pray this season will be a time of new growth.
by Lyndall
Bywater (UKI Boiler Room Team)
WEDNESDAY 23 JULY: GROWING IN FAITH – CORPS WITHOUT APPOINTED OFFICERS
‘Coedpoeth and Rhosllanerchrugog are two small village corps. They’ll no longer have an appointed officer after July. Their children and family work is their greatest concern. They have a Jam Club at Coedpoeth with 16 children and a parent-andtoddler group at Rhos with up to 25 attending,’ says Major Mary Wolfe. Where officers have previously shouldered much of the burden, pray that volunteers will step up to keep thriving mission initiatives alive.
by Lyndall Bywater (UKI Boiler Room Team)
THURSDAY 24 JULY: INTERNATIONAL SALVATION ARMY – BRAZIL TERRITORY
Pray for the soldiers, officers, employees and all who call the Army their spiritual home. May the Spirit of the living God fall afresh, kindling fire in hearts. May the love of Christ stir them to compassionate action. Pray for the territorial leadership team of Colonels Wilson and Nara Strasse, and Lieut-Colonels Manuel and Paulina Márquez. by Lyndall Bywater (UKI Boiler Room Team)
FRIDAY 25 JULY: JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION – GENDER IDENTITY
We seek your Spirit’s guidance as we pray for respect and justice for all people. May your light and truth illuminate our journey of understanding. Teach us to listen, reflect and pray as we face each new challenge. Unite us in embracing the rich diversity of humanity that enriches our lives.
by Lieut-Colonel Jayne Roberts

THIS list is published following the General Farewell process, whereby the identifying of appointments for officers and divisional and territorial envoys accepting new responsibilities is preceded by consultation with individuals, line managers and corps/centre representatives. It shows how all active UK and Ireland officers (in this territory, at IHQ and overseas), non-UK and Ireland officers serving in the territory and territorial and divisional envoys in corps, social services and headquarters appointments have been deployed at the General Change in July 2025.
Some appointments effective subsequently are also shown. Many officers also hold additional appointments that are not listed here. New appointments that have not been announced previously are indicated with a circumflex accent (^) and modified ones with an asterisk (*). Where necessary, a fuller description of the appointment is given. Individuals are listed in alphabetical order, regardless of seniority of appointment or rank. Information is provided by and published courtesy of the Personnel Service, THQ, and is correct at the time of going to press.

A CAPACITY crowd filled the auditorium on Friday evening for a programme of Spirit-filled musical ministry, writes Editorial Assistant Lyn Woods. The concert featured visiting guests the Canadian Staff Songsters (CSS), led by Cathie Koehnen and Executive Officer Lieut-Colonel John Murray. They were joined by the International Staff Songsters (ISS) and International Staff Band (ISB), who kicked off the evening with Norman Bearcroft’s rousing ‘Temple 85’.
The first piece of the night from the CSS, ‘Great God, Great Praise’, preceded Chief Secretary Colonel Peter Forrest’s welcome and opening prayer. Two prayerful songs from the CSS and ‘Breathe on Me, Breath of God’ from the ISS were interspersed with ‘Holy
Forever’ and ‘The Goodness of God’ from the ISB.
ISS Leader Dorothy Nancekievill introduced the premiere of ‘New Creation’, a new piece written and arranged for the evening by Stephen Pearson and Richard Phillips and presented by the combined songsters.
The band presented Len Ballantine’s ‘Go Down, Moses’ and accompanied congregational singing of ‘Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven’, introduced by ISB Executive Officer Lieut-Colonel Paul Kingscott (THQ).
The ISS presented a trio of songs, including the reverent ‘Celebrate the Child’ and ‘The Quiet Heart’. The band brought a calypso carnival feel to the hall with their rendition of Kevin Larsson’s ‘Rejoice!’, before the CSS presented their
own trio of songs, including ‘His Light in Us’ – the name given to their UK tour.
Territorial Leader Commissioner Paul Main stirred everyone with a Bible message partly inspired by the testimony of Canadian Staff Songster Annie Robertson, which she had shared the previous weekend in a concert at Bromley Temple. He urged all present to let the love of God dwell deep within their hearts, adding that we should be challenged by what we will do with it, being true to his calling on our lives.
A great evening concluded with ‘I Have Seen the Glory of the Lord’, featuring all the musicians combined, and a sung benediction from the songsters, who were dispersed throughout the auditorium.
THE ICC, BIRMINGHAM
SALVATIONISTS across the generations gathered for Together 2025, reports Assistant Editor Stevie Hope Saturday opened outside, with a prayer walk and Parkrun. Led by Captain Richard Weston (West Midlands DHQ), the walk toured local landmarks to bathe the city in prayer. Set against the beautiful Edgbaston Reservoir, the Parkrun included a mention of The Salvation Army over the tannoy. Lots of Salvationists took part and were around to chat at the finish line.
Outdoor community engagement
continued in the city centre at Brindleyplace, with music from Birmingham Citadel’s young people, interactive fingerprint art and sports in the summer sun.
Themed Mission 160: From Generation to Generation, the weekend recognised 160 years of The Salvation Army, with thankful hearts for generations past, and everyone was reminded to look to and prepare the generations to come.
This was exemplified by the oversubscribed Bible study, which saw
every seat filled – and some people even sitting on the floor. Major Kerry and Lieut-Colonel Nick Coke (THQ) began by playing a record of ‘My Generation’ by the Who, before taking us through the arc of Scripture, from Genesis 17:7 to 2 Timothy 1:5, and challenging us to ‘do the little things’ to help the next generation know God.
MACA Dance led a workshop before taking to the stage in the weekend’s engagement space. A packed room of people came to sing with the International Staff Songsters (ISS)
at a workshop and those attending went on to sing in the engagement space, with a strength of voice that made clapping along irresistible.
Music was woven throughout. Other performers in the engagement space included the Canadian Staff Songsters (CSS), International Staff Band (ISB) and Tony Daniels (THQ) on saxophone.
Against this worship-infused backdrop, attendees explored the marketplace set up by teams from Territorial Headquarters, William Booth College and beyond. The always popular SP&S Roadshow was open all weekend.
In the atrium, the Here to Help team were on hand to welcome and assist people, and the prayer team, led by Major Gary Lacey (THQ), prayed consistently for the event and people.
A pop-up gallery proudly showcased the territory’s ever-expanding pool of artistic talent. Creatives also had the
opportunity to make something new in an art workshop.
An afternoon children’s session saw young people playing with and learning from the Founders and Bible characters, who earlier had been spotted roaming the engagement space!
After pre-meeting music from the CSS, Territorial Leader Commissioner Jenine Main opened the first of three evening sessions by welcoming us all to the party. Joined by General Lyndon Buckingham, the pair got to know some special guests: Alfie, Mike and David from Sunderland Millfield and Thanan Simeray from Hastings Temple. They offered insights into their experiences of faith and family.
The worship team and Birmingham Citadel YP Band, with members of MACA Dance, kicked things off with a true bop: Israel Houghton’s ‘You Are Good’.
In a message to round off this session,
the General reminded us: ‘God loves you, cares for you and welcomes you into his family, and he invites you to participate in the work that he is determined to do on the planet.’
‘Each one of us has to make a decision at some point about whether or not we’re going to get on board,’ he continued. ‘It doesn’t matter how much engagement there has been in the past. It matters how much engagement there is going to be going forward.’
The party recommenced as the ISB led everyone in singing ‘Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee’. In session two, World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham and Territorial Leader Commissioner Paul Main were at the party table. They introduced International Staff Songsters Margaret and Hazel Launn, who are mother and daughter, International Staff Bandsman Harry Stubbs, the

newest member of the band, and singersongwriter Michael Gwazai (Bexleyheath).
Each spoke about how generations before had invested in them musically in ways that developed their faith. Michael’s stunning vocal solo of Lauren Daigle’s ‘You Say’ left people contemplating the powerful lyrics.
Session three’s afterparty was hyped up by Captains Berri and Callum McKenna (William Booth College) with a call to worship based on Psalm 145. Worship included a reprise of ‘You Are Good’, the Canadian Staff Songsters and several expressive performances by MACA Dance.
The central Bible reading was John 15:9–17. Commissioner Bronwyn explained how this passage provided the disciples and all who would follow – including us – with a foundation for a life with lasting impact and legacy.
‘The fruit of genuine commitment to Christ,’ she emphasised, ‘is authentic
love for those we’re doing life alongside. It is impossible to maintain this kind of love by human will alone. Love that looks like Jesus can only flourish as we stay connected to him who is love.’
Quoting Salvationist Samuel Brengle, the commissioner reminded us that we will become spiritually dead if love leaks out – that love is the life of The Salvation Army.
We were left challenged. How will we intentionally stay connected to Christ? How will our legacy affect future generations?
In response to the Holy Spirit, people moved forward to the front while others prayed where they were, as every seat became a mercy seat.
The worship team took us into the fitting finale of ‘Holy Forever’. The outpouring of worship left everyone feeling challenged and uplifted, and ready for more on Sunday!
THE ICC, BIRMINGHAM
‘TO be a champion of God’s mission means actively participating in, witnessing to and contributing to his work in the world.’ Those were the words of Cadet Cat Brown, one of the Champions of the Mission ordained and commissioned during the Sunday morning session of Together 2025, reports Managing Editor Ivan Radford. Other cadets in the session defined it as ‘loving people just as they are’, ‘being an example of his transformational love’ and ‘standing for justice, showing compassion and helping others encounter the life-changing hope of Jesus Christ’.
All these definitions were embodied by the passionate cohort as they boldly declared their faith, led by Major Stephen Oliver (William Booth College), and were charged to keep their commitments by Territorial Secretary for Leader Development Colonel Julie Forrest.
After a welcome by William Booth College Principal Lieut-Colonel Mark Herbert, officers who had just retired or were about to retire read out personal verses of Scripture as the cadets walked on to the platform. That passing of the leadership baton, from generation
to generation, was echoed in the ordination and commissioning, which was conducted – in an inspired move –by Territorial Leader Commissioner Paul Main, accompanied by junior soldier Alfie (Sunderland Millfield) issuing each new lieutenant with their charge.
Lieut-Colonel Judith Payne, former principal of William Booth College, and International Staff Songster Elliott Chappell prayed for the Champions of the Mission, thanking God for them and for his love.
The International Staff Band (ISB) played ‘The Goodness of God’ and the territorial leaders and international leaders greeted the newly commissioned officers, as the congregation sang the words over them.
In a stirring message, General Lyndon Buckingham challenged everyone across the territory. Speaking on Matthew 9:35–38, he emphasised the need for everyone to contribute to God’s mission.
‘We’re living in a world that desperately needs you,’ he told the Champions of
the Mission. He highlighted how the verses in Matthew describe both the ‘in’ and ‘out’ ministry of Jesus.
‘It’s really good when the people of God come together to encourage one another, to love each other, to practise their faith on each other,’ he celebrated. ‘This is what it should be like in the place where you gather. It makes these places attractive because these places smell of the presence of God.’
‘As much as Jesus was in those spaces, he was also out,’ the General added. ‘He did not stay away from the difficult places or the hard to reach. He was out amongst it. I love that because it so resembles the history and the DNA of The Salvation Army.’
‘Don’t be satisfied just with the in,’ he challenged. ‘Go for the out.’
He emphasised that faith isn’t a theory, but something to be practised intentionally: ‘The river flowing from the throne of God is a river of God’s people who have been transformed by the love of God and who see their mission in the world to be his agents. Allow the Holy Spirit to do a check on you. Am I in the river? Am I fully there? Am I holding back? Am I just dipping my toes? Let’s get ourselves in that river. Let’s go deep in the river of God’s grace.’
Congregational songs led by the worship team invited everyone to ‘Hear the Call of the Kingdom’ and called for God to ‘Send the Fire’, before the International Staff Songsters (ISS) captured ‘The Hand of Our God’ moving in the charged room.
The congregation also joined together for ‘Holy Forever’, led by World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham, singing of ‘a thousand generations falling down in worship’. That song, also featured on Friday and Saturday, became an anthem for the weekend, resonating with ‘He Will Hold Me Fast’ – presented by the ISS – and testifying to God’s enduring, eternal faithfulness.
The afternoon’s joyous sending out of the newly commissioned officers –accompanied by cheers and homemade banners – was celebrated as a testament to God moving through his people today.
Captains Lizette and Paul Williams (Felixstowe) took the congregation on a virtual tour through 160 years of Army history, accompanied by the ISB. They thanked God for his work through the Movement since the days of Founders
Catherine and William Booth.
The congregation sang ‘To God Be the Glory!’ and ‘O Boundless Salvation’, two rousing classics from the Army’s vibrant musical heritage, while ‘This Is the Day’ encouraged us to ‘leave behind what happened yesterday, ’cause today there’s a new thing happening’.
Interactive polls asked people how they share the good news and serve others. Videos shared two exciting examples: Core Recovery Church at Boscombe and youth street outreach in Lochgelly, both initiatives introducing God’s love to a world where people are hungry for authenticity and purpose.
‘Passing on faith has to be intentional,’ encouraged Territorial Leaders Commissioners Jenine and Paul Main in a joint message, based on Acts 2.
The territorial leaders dug into the weekend’s intergenerational theme. Reflecting on parenting and how God’s promise of salvation is true for every age, they highlighted the need to have a visible faith that is passed to the next generation, leaving a mark in our homes and families as well as our communities.
To cheers and applause, Commissioner Jenine emphasised: ‘Young people are not just our future; they’re our present.’
The importance of being intentional
in discipleship and sharing the good news was underscored by outgoing Territorial Candidates Director Major Mark Sawyer, who interviewed candidates recently accepted for officer training about saying yes to God’s call on their lives.
It was brought home by the Champions of the Mission themselves, when they presented their sessional song and dedication song over Sunday’s two sessions.
‘Telling Your Story’ saw them pledge to ‘make new disciples in your name … in all we do and all we say’. ‘Your Mission’, by Anais and Khaim Spencer, went further, inviting us all to ‘be a witness, living out your truth, love without agenda’. ‘This is your mission,’ they stated. ‘Go with grace.’
The weekend reached a moving, intimate conclusion as everyone sang ‘The Blessing’ over the new lieutenants, General Lyndon and Commissioner Bronwyn, and the international Salvation Army.
‘May his favour be upon you,’ the congregation prayed, ‘and a thousand generations, and your family and your children, and their children.’
‘O, Church Arise and Put Your Armour On’ sent everyone out fired up to be champions of the mission where they are.
CHIEF of the Staff Commissioner Edward Hill and World Secretary for Women’s Ministries Commissioner Shelley Hill inspired and uplifted many at the USA Southern Territory’s Commissioning weekend.
The commissioners accepted the territory’s World Services Ingathering for the year, totalling $10.8 million. In his message, Commissioner Edward spoke about how God can turn even a tiny spark into a blazing fire.
On Saturday morning, Commissioner Shelley entreated people to live out the inclusivity of Christ in their service: ‘Instead of creating barriers that keep people away or out, let’s be followers of Jesus who seek to build beautiful bridges that include and welcome all.’
Commissioner Shelley offered words of encouragement during the annual Silver Star Luncheon, honouring those who have mentored and supported cadets. Commissioner Shelley also sat down with the Territorial Ministry to Women Department to record an episode for their Open Air podcast.
Commissioner Edward was interviewed for USA Southern’s written publication, the Southern Spirit, in which he shared how the territory’s four year strategic plan aligns with Compass.
On Sunday morning, the Chief of the Staff urged every Salvationist to be a champion of the mission: ‘You’ve got to be saved. You’ve got to be sanctified. You’ve got to be a person of service. And you have to be willing to be sent. And if you are willing to do those things, you’ll be a good ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ.’ – AR
PARKHEAD Majors Adrian and Chris Lee (Huddersfield) led Pentecost meetings, and Ezzi and Hannah (Huddersfield) shared testimonies of the Holy Spirit guiding their lives. An international buffet took place on Saturday evening. During Sunday worship Major Adrian lit a flame representing the fire of the Spirit. Major Chris invited people to come forward and be anointed with oil. Some knelt at the mercy seat and many danced, giving God the glory and sharing amazing testimonies! The corps learnt of answered prayers and enjoyed hearing the multicultural congregation saying ‘Jesus is Lord’ in their own languages. – AD
GENERAL Lyndon Buckingham and World President of Women’s Ministries Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham attended the Belonging 2025 congress.
‘We come together not just as individuals who occupy a common space. We are a living, breathing community, connected by the love of Christ,’ said Commissioner Bronwyn, speaking from Romans 12.
The General said: ‘It’s not sufficient for us to celebrate our belonging. It’s our responsibility as his redeemed children, to clothe ourselves with those things that are synonymous with belonging to the Kingdom of God.’
Congress highlights included: the enrolment of 61 junior and senior soldiers and adherents; the commissioning of the Champions of the Mission session of cadets; a World Services Ingathering of $11.2 million and dedication of summer mission teams going to Kenya, Mexico and Slovakia; and the presentation of the Others award to Corps Community Ministries Director Pamela Church‑Pryor (Norridge Citadel, Illinois), who was described as an embodiment of holistic ministry.
Along with Compass, the Army’s Global Strategic Framework, new territorial priorities – Spiritual Life, Youth and Leadership Development – were shared by Territorial Commander Commissioner Evie Diaz. Commissioner Bronwyn presented 12 awards for excellence in relation to these priorities at a commencement and awards banquet before the congress.
In his commencement address, the General charged the Champions of the Mission to stay humble, connected, accountable and focused.
Other congress activities included an interactive prayer zone, a gaming tournament, a Rising Stars music competition and the debut of Belongings: A Thrift Store Musical. – AR
WESTON-SUPER-MARE Members of Staple Hill Band joined the corps as part of its ongoing Sound Forth Praise weekends. Worship was excellently led by Naomi Blowers, who led an inspiring service that challenged people to consider carefully the choices they make and the roads they follow. A vocal solo from Emily Elliott reminded everyone to walk with Jesus and trust in him. The band brought a moving rendition of ‘Guardian of My Soul’ and the congregation was challenged to ‘arise’ and ‘storm the forts of darkness’. The corps is grateful to the band for its visit and support. – DM
