What do you know about tigers? Do you know that they’re part of the ‘big cat’ group, which includes jaguars and lions? If you already knew that, then you might also know that tigers are the biggest cat species on the planet. Maybe, if you know a lot about tigers, you know the names of some of the 13 countries wild tigers live in!

Whether you’re a tiger expert or not, there’s one fact that everyone needs to know – tigers are endangered and they need our help! An endangered animal is an animal that’s at risk of becoming extinct, which means that they’d disappear from the world for ever! That’s a real problem that tigers are facing, as their wild population has dropped 95 per cent since the start of the 20th century. Global Tiger Day takes place on Tuesday 29 July. The aim of the day is to make people aware of some of the issues tigers face, such as climate change and being hunted by humans. The hope is that people all around the world will make donations to help save tigers! If you want to take part, you could try to raise money for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) by putting on a bake sale or talent show, or even by doing some chores!

If you’d like to donate money to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to help them protect tigers, visit support.wwf.org.uk/adopt-a-tiger

You could also help make people aware of the challenges tigers face by making a poster or leaflet. To find some fab facts you could use, check out wwf.org.uk/learn/fascinating-facts/tigers

If you’re a tiger fan, then I’m sure you’ll be loving this week’s issue! There are some wonderful animals in our world, but so many of them are endangered. God asks us to love and care for all creation. Unfortunately, humans don’t always do a very good job of that! So I’m going to set you a caring for creation challenge! For the rest of the summer (and hopefully beyond too!), I want you to make an extra effort to do things that will help our world. These could include walking, cycling or travelling by public transport as much as possible, or sorting your rubbish to make sure your family is recycling everything you can. You could also go litter picking in your local area, or try to use less water and electricity. Will you take on the challenge? Let us know how you get on so you can inspire others to join in the challenge too!

Read the comment below about how God includes us in his family

Am I Invited?

ow does King Charles III decide who can come to his birthday party? Since he knows so many people, he must have a few rules that he follows. Perhaps he only invites people who were born on a Thursday, know the words to every Taylor Swift song and have a name that starts with the letter X!

I can say one thing for certain – I’ve never been invited! Since it’s so hard to get invited to Charles’s birthday, isn’t it amazing that we’ve all had an invitation from an even greater king? God, who rules over the whole universe, wants to include us in his family!

That’s the point of this week’s Bible cartoon. Jesus tells a parable about a feast that everyone

is invited to. This includes people who wouldn’t normally be invited to a feast like the one the master of the banquet is throwing! It’s a party that every single person can be included in. Just like that party, God invites every single person to join his family. You don’t need to be rich or famous to be a Christian – you just need to accept God’s invite and follow him!

If you’re already a Christian, are you including others in everything you do, just like Jesus included you? This might look like including a kid in a game when they don’t have anyone to play with, or it might look like being welcoming to someone who’s new to your church. We have an amazing king who invites everyone to join his family, so let’s love everyone too!

Everyone’s Invited!

Since everyone’s invited to join God’s family, use the space below to design your own invitation to become a Christian – just like the kind of invitation you might get for a birthday party.

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Year Two

If you thought the first year of Jesus’ three-year mission was busy, just wait until you hear about the second one! During that year, Jesus chose – out of the tons of followers he had – 12 people who would become his disciples (we learnt about a couple last week). He also taught something called the Sermon on the Mount (which means on a mountain). This was so that he could tell his followers what they should do to live a good life!

Jesus continued to perform spectacular miracles, such as calming a ferocious storm and bringing the daughter of a man called Jairus back to life! And he began to tell lots of parables – which were stories that told people something about God. However, not everything about this year was brilliant. Jesus’ cousin, John, was killed in prison. Plus, the people who didn’t like Jesus started to make plans to kill him too!

Unbelievable Animals

Forget cats and dogs – there are some animals that are so strange that it’s hard to believe they actually exist! Over the next few weeks, we’ll discover some of the wackiest!

Manatee

Manatees are mammals that live in rivers and the sea. Even though they’re massive, they’re not dangerous to humans. Manatees are often called sea cows, because they move slowly like a cow, and also because they spend a lot of time eating plants. Although manatees never leave the water, they still need to breathe air!

What could you buy with £100? You definitely couldn’t buy a house, a car or even a phone! However, if you travelled back in time to the 10th century, you could pay around £100 and then have a castle made out of timber built for you! Of course, money worked differently back then, which is why making a castle cost less then than it would today.

Hello, readers, i’M PATCH AND I’VE GOT A PROBLEM I THINK YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ME WITH. i’VE LOST A VERY IMPORTANT OBJECT SOMEWHERE IN THIS ISSUE. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP ME FIND IT? i HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE HERE.

You might know the date that Valentine’s Day is on or the name of the current king of the United Kingdom. However, there are also plenty of strange facts we reckon you haven’t got stored in your noggin! So here are a couple of random facts that you definitely (and by definitely, we mean don’t really) need to know.

Lots of football teams have mascots, but not many of those mascots go on to become a politician! H’Angus is the monkey mascot for Hartlepool United, and he campaigned to become the mayor of Hartlepool in 2002! After saying that he would give free bananas to all school children, he was elected to be the mayor on 2 May 2002.

What is the fiercest flower in a garden? A tiger lily!

What did the tiger say to the antelope? ‘Pleased to eat you!’

He he, he he!

What does a tiger wear during winter? A stripy jumper!

How do tigers prefer to have their meat? Roar! (Raw!)

What’s a tiger’s favourite day of the week? Chewsday!

Why do tigers have stripes?

How do you take a tiger’s temperature? With great care!

Unlike most big cats, tigers are great swimmers! Young tigers enjoy playing in water and adult tigers lounge in streams and lakes to stay cool during the day. They also swim long distances to hunt their prey.

When a moment in a film is so wild that an actor feels nervous filming it, then a stuntperson might take their place! Stuntpeople are trained to perform lots of different stunts, such as driving a car as fast as Lando Norris on a racetrack and jumping out of a plane that’s high in the sky. It’s time for us to introduce you to our absolute favourite stuntman – Stuntman Stu! Well, Stuntman Stu isn’t a real stuntman – he’s an action figure. But that means he’s ready for you to put him through some of the most ridiculous stunts imaginable! Stuntman Stu comes in the Break Apart Stunt Set, which also includes his Race Ace Stunt Car. This is no ordinary car – if you crash it into anything, it will fall apart, ready for you to build it again. With Stuntman Stu and his car, there are no limits to the number of awesome stunts that you can try out!

For your opportunity to win your own Stuntman Stu Race Ace Stunt Car Set, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Stuntman Stu Competition, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ.

International Day of Friendship

What’s a ship that’s better than any boat and even more awesome than a spaceship? A friendship, of course!

OK, that might just be the worst joke that’s ever been published in an issue of Kids Alive!, but having a friendship with someone – or friendships with lots of people – really is brilliant. In fact, it’s so fantastic that it’s worth celebrating!

A Better World

On 30 July 1958, a group known as the World Friendship Crusade suggested having a special day for people to celebrate their friendships. This was a fab idea, but it took until 2011 for it to become an official event!

Now, every year on 30 July, people all around the world can take part in International Day of Friendship. This is a day to get excited about the friends that you have, and it’s also a day to recognise that friendships help to make the world a better place. They can do this by uniting people who otherwise might have fought, and by connecting communities.

Famous Friendships

What are your favourite friendships in stories and films? Here are three friendships that we think are spectacular!

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Sherlock Holmes is a famous detective who was created by Arthur Conan Doyle. Although Sherlock is brilliant at what he does, no adventure he goes on would be complete without his best pal – Doctor Watson.

Lilo and Stitch. One of the best films that came out Lilo and Stitch. We love that this film shows that Lilo and Stitch help each other to become kinder and are there for each other when times are tough!

Buzz Lightyear and Woody. These buddies first appeared in a film called Toy Story. Buzz is a space ranger and Woody is a cowboy, so they’re about as different from each other as you could possibly get. However, their differences don’t stop them from being best friends!

Friends Are Good for Us!

All three of these friendships are great examples of why mates are so magnificent! Friends can help to make the best of times even better, and they can encourage one another to live healthy, active lives.

Friends can also look out for one another by supporting each other through hard times. Plus, having a good friend can help you to feel more confident and less stressed. Also, friends can help you to learn to celebrate cultures that are different to yours!

Being A Good Friend

Having a good friend is amazing, but it’s really important that you’re a good friend to them too! You can be a good friend by…

Paying attention when your friend is talking to you. Supporting your friend when they’re upset.

Keeping promises that you make. Forgiving your friends when they make mistakes. Telling your friends how much you care about them.

Including your friends when they want to join in with a game you’re playing.

Celebrate Friendship

We hope this article has inspired you to want to celebrate your friendships on International Day of Friendship. Here are some ideas for things you could get up to…

Make a friendship bracelet to give to your best friend.

Bake your best friend’s favourite sweet treat to give to them.

Go on a day trip with some friends. You could go on a bike ride, explore a forest or even go to the zoo!

Invite your friends over to watch a film – or to make a film together!

Spend time with a new friend, such as a friend you’ve made at a holiday club.

Go on a stargazing trip (check out last week’s issue to find out more).

Do something together that’s good for our world, such as litter picking!

Celebrate your pals on International Day of Friendship!
