elcome to the isle of Berk! It’s home to a village of Vikings, led by a super-tough warrior called Stoick the Vast. It’s also home to lots (and lots) of dragons! Despite sharing the isle of Berk, it would be fair to say that the Vikings and dragons don’t get along too well. In fact, we would go as far as to call them enemies!

For generations, the Vikings and dragons have been battling each other. Then, one day, a boy called Hiccup discovers an injured Night Fury dragon called Toothless. Instead of !ghting Toothless, Hiccup makes a decision that will change Berk for ever… he decides to become Toothless’s friend!

Hiccup has always struggled to !t in with the rest of the Vikings. As Stoick’s son, everyone’s always expected Hiccup to become a great warrior – but Hiccup’s shown no signs of doing that! So when the other villagers discover that Hiccup is trying to train a dragon to become a Viking, life for Hiccup gets even tougher. However, with the help erce !ghter called Astrid and a blacksmith called Gobber, Hiccup is ready to prove to his village that humans and dragons can get along!

You can watch ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ in cinemas from Monday 9 June

This film is rated PG, which stands for parental guidance. Parents or carers can read more about this rating at bbfc.co.uk before deciding whether it’s suitable for their family.

Life for Hiccup must be so tough sometimes. He doesn’t ft in with the other Vikings and everyone expects him to be a great warrior like his dad – but that’s just not his thing.

When Jesus came to live on Earth, so many people were expecting him to be a great warrior who would fx their problems by fghting and destroying the Roman Empire. However, that just wasn’t his thing either.

Jesus came to Earth to fx problems, but not in the way people expected. His way of living wasn’t about fghting or destroying others, it was about loving and forgiving them. And that’s exactly how Jesus wants you to live too. You can live like Jesus by showing love, forgiveness and compassion to everyone –even if they’re different to you. By living like Jesus, you can also show others you’re Jesus’ friend, and how fantastic it is that he loves us all.

The Lord Is My Shepherd?

Idon’t know about you, but I !nd it odd that there’s a bit of the Bible that starts by talking about God as a shepherd. I don’t have any sheep, so I don’t need a shepherd. So how does describing God as a shepherd help you and me?

David, who wrote Psalm 23, was a shepherd and really knew how to care for sheep – 1 Samuel 17:34–36 says he even killed bears and lions to protect his ock! For David, thinking of God as someone who would do anything to look after him was comforting. It helped him to know he was safe. He also knew other people at the time understood shepherds and would !nd this psalm helpful.

The other part of Psalm 23 we’re thinking about this week says, ‘I have everything I need’ (International Children’s Bible). Now, that’s a bit easier to understand. However, that’s not the same as getting everything you want. I’m sure a grown-up you know has explained the difference between needs and wants. Just as a shepherd makes sure his sheep have what they need –food, water, shelter and safety – God makes sure we have the things we need.

If David was alive today, I wonder how he might describe God. How would you describe God? Who makes sure you have everything you need? Knowing God cares for me even more than the people who love me and care about me feels great. I hope you feel great about that too.

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

A House in Ruins

Do you know what happened to the people of Judah after they were captured by the Babylonians? They spent around 70 years in exile and then many of them returned to Jerusalem! They were led by a priest called Joshua and a man called Zerubbabel, who was from King David’s family.

Even though the people had spent years in Babylonia because they hadn’t followed God, they went straight back to their old ways. In fact, they were so focused on building their own homes that they weren’t rebuilding God’s house, which was the Temple!

So God sent messages for the people through a prophet called Haggai. As long as the people put themselves !rst, they would struggle. They needed to rebuild the Temple and they needed to follow God!

You might know the date that Valentine’s Day is on or the name of the current king of the United Kingdom. However, there are also plenty of strange facts we reckon you haven’t got stored in your noggin! So here are a couple of random facts that you de!nitely (and by de!nitely, we mean don’t really) need to know.

There are so many delicious sauces that you can have with your dinner. Lots of people love tomato ketchup, but did you know that tomato ketchup used to be sold as medicine? It was sold by a man called John Cook Bennett in 1834. John believed that ketchup could cure upset stomachs. He even created tomato ketchup pills!

We’re sorry to break it to you, but How to Train Your Dragon isn’t based on a true story! However, in 1335, the people in the town of Klagenfurt in Austria really did believe that dragons existed. A skull was found in a nearby gravel pit and people were convinced that it belonged to a dragon! In reality, it was actually the skull of a woolly rhinoceros!

Why do dragons make such good chefs? Because they know how to make a good roast!

Pentecost

Every story has to have an ending. Every book has a last page, every TV nal episode, and every bedtime story has to time for you to go to sleep! So how does the story of the Bible end?

We’ve recently celebrated Easter, and that might feel like an ending. Jesus had died, and then he’d come back to life! Then he’d returned to Heaven. Jesus was gone, so surely the story of the Bible must have

The Story Continues

The day of Pentecost shows us that the story of the Bible was anything !nished, and it’s a day that’s still celebrated around the world. This year, Pentecost is 8 June, which is tomorrow! As we learn about the story of Pentecost, colour in the designs on these two pages.

Wind and Fire

The !rst Pentecost took place 50 days after Easter Sunday. Jesus’ followers had all gathered together in one house in Jerusalem. They were waiting to see what would happen now that Jesus had left them.

Suddenly, the inside of the house sounded really windy (imagine the kind of wind you might hear when you’re stood high up on a cliff-top). Plus, it looked like Jesus’ followers’ heads were on !re! The disciples were !lled with the Holy Spirit – this meant that God himself was living inside them!

So Many Languages

A big crowd gathered around Jesus’ followers – and this crowd was utterly amazed! The crowd was made up of Jews from all around the world, but Jesus’ disciples were speaking to them in their own languages! The Holy Spirit had given the disciples the ability to speak in lots of languages. Now the disciples could share the story of Jesus with everyone!

The Gifts of Pentecost

Jesus was no longer with the disciples, but the story of the Bible was far from over. On the day of Pentecost, he’d given his disciples three gifts.

Gift One – The Holy Spirit

Jesus’ followers now had the Holy Spirit living inside them. The Holy Spirit is God, so that meant that they always had God with them, no matter what they were going through. Not only was the Holy Spirit a sign that God was always with them, but he was also a sign that when they died, they’d be with God for ever!

Gift Two – The Church

The day of Pentecost brought people together from all around the world. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, many people came to believe in Jesus. In fact, around 3,000 people became Christians! From these people, churches (which are groups of people who gather together to worship and follow Jesus) were created!

Gift Three – Sharing

The third gift was that Jesus’ followers would be able to share the good news of Jesus with others! Now that the Holy Spirit lived inside them, they could trust that God would help them to say the right things, and that God would work in the hearts of the people they were talking to.

It’s Not Over!

The gifts of Pentecost weren’t just for Jesus’ followers back then! He gives them to people who follow him now, too. If you follow Jesus, then the Holy Spirit lives inside you. You can be part of a church – a family – who you can praise God with. Finally, you have the gift of being able to share the good news of Jesus with everyone around you!

So are you a follower of Jesus? If you are, then you’re part of God’s story. It’s a story unlike any other, because it will never end!

Celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit this Pentecost!

If you’d like to read more about the first Pentecost, check out Acts 2 in a Bible!
