NATIONAL WALKING MONTH

Picture this – it’s Monday morning and you’re on your way to school. You can feel the sun on your skin, but there’s a slight breeze. As you walk, you see beautiful !owers sprouting in a patch of grass and you hear birds singing as they !y above you. To be honest, you can’t think of a more peaceful way to kick off a busy day!

Walking truly is underrated, isn’t it? Nowadays, it can seem much easier to catch a lift in a car with a parent or carer, but putting on a pair of shoes and enjoying the fresh air really is fantastic. Not only is walking relaxing, but it’s also really good for making your heart healthier. Plus, deciding to walk instead of travelling in a car is better for the planet.

That’s exactly why an organisation called Living Streets has organised National Walking Month! National Walking Month lasts for the whole of May, and it’s all about encouraging people to walk more. So this May, why not make the decision to walk as much as you possibly can? It’s a spectacular way of enjoying the outdoors and it’s also really good for you! You could even take part in Walk to School Week from 19-23 May, which is a week when kids are asked to try to walk to school every single day!

To find out more about National Walking Month, visit livingstreets.org.uk/get-involved/national-walking-month

When I was on holiday with my family recently, we went for a walk along the beach and I saw loads of footprints in the sand – from our family and others who had walked on the same beach. This reminded me of a poem called ‘Footprints in the Sand’. In the poem, someone has a dream about walking along a beach, with God walking beside them. When the person notices that at some points there’s just one set of footprints, they ask God where he was during these moments of their life. He’d promised to always be with them. God replies that when they see only one set of footprints, that’s when he was carrying them during diffcult times.

This was a really great reminder for me that God is always with us. No matter what we’re facing, God is always walking beside us and ready to help us in whatever way we need.

WLoving God

hen I was a teenager, I loved watching wrestling. Each episode was packed with epic showdowns. I loved wrestling so much that I’d spend my pocket money on magazines so I could learn more about each wrestler and hang their posters on my wall. When I think of my wrestling phase, it reminds me of what Jesus said in this week’s Bible cartoon.

During another ‘showdown’ between Jesus and the Pharisees (religious leaders), the religious leaders asked Jesus a tricky question – what was the most important commandment? They probably thought they’d !nally backed Jesus into a tough corner. After all, there were more than 600 laws to choose from! But for Jesus the answer was simple – ‘Love God with all your heart, soul and mind.’

Read the comment below about how we can show love to God

You see, choosing to be Jesus’ friend is more than following a bunch of rules. It’s about enjoying a relationship with Jesus as you get to know him better. Just like nothing could come between me and my wrestling obsession, your friendship with Jesus should be the most important thing in your life.

So, when you care about things that Jesus cares about – such as treating others fairly – you’re loving God with your heart. When you choose to say, do or think about things that will make Jesus happy –you’re loving God with all of your soul. And when you regularly read the Bible, so you can learn about the cool things God’s done and the promises he’s made – you’re loving God with your mind. What can you do today to show God how much you love him?

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Don’t Save Them!

Can you remember Jonah? He was swallowed by a !sh and then spat out onto a beach three days later!

Jonah had !nally agreed to do what God wanted him to, so he went to a place called Nineveh. He told the people there that they were going to be punished by God for all the wrong things they’d done!

The people of Nineveh were really sorry. Everyone in the town (even the animals) wore sackcloth to show how sad they were. So God decided he wouldn’t destroy Nineveh! This made Jonah really angry, because he wanted the people to be punished! Later, Jonah was sitting down and God made a plant grow next to him. Then God killed the plant. This upset Jonah, but God used this moment to make an important point – if Jonah cared so much about a plant, then of course God cared about the people of Nineveh!

What time is it right now? If you were wearing a watch, you’d be able to look down at your wrist and know the answer! Ever since the !rst watch was invented in Nuremberg in the early 16th century, people have been using them to know what the time is. However, imagine what it would be like to have a watch that not only knows the time, but also takes photos, plays music and lets you send messages!

That’s exactly what myFirst Fone can do. At it might look like any ordinary watch – but it’s actually so much more! MyFirst Fone is a lot like a mobile phone, except it’s for kids (which, obviously, makes it so much cooler than any phone a grown-up would use). From listening to your favourite songs to taking photos with your family, there’s so much you can do with myFirst Fone.

For your opportunity to win your own myFirst Fone, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. VE Day

It’s 8 May this Thursday, which might not sound like a particularly special day to you – no more special than 22 June or 6 October (unless, of course, one of those days is your birthday). However, if you were living in the United Kingdom in 1945, then 8 May would have been one of the most special days ever!

That’s because 8 May 1945 was Victory in Europe Day, otherwise known as VE Day. This was a day for celebrations, and this was also a day for remembering. Now, 80 years later, on the anniversary of VE Day, we want to celebrate and remember too!

The Second World War

On 1 September 1939, Germany (led by an evil man called Adolf Hitler) invaded Poland. This launched the world into a massive war. There were two sides in the war. There were the Axis Powers, which included Germany, Italy and Japan. Then there were the Allies, which included the UK, France, Russia and the United States.

Then, on 7 May 1945, Germany surrendered! A special document was signed on 8 May in Germany’s capital, Berlin, which officially brought the war in Europe to an end. Although the war would continue for another few months in an area known as the Pacific, this truly was the beginning of the end of the Second World War!

A Time To Celebrate

News that the war in Europe had ended spread around the world, and this led to lots of celebrations. In the UK, a national holiday was declared and people came together to celebrate. Here are some stories of how a few people celebrated…

Joyce Hughes

Joyce was 10 years old and living in Liverpool. She was in bed when she heard the sounds of people dancing and singing outside. She discovered the war had ended, and people were having a big party around a bonfire while someone played the piano!

Albert Jarrett was from Jamaica, and he served in the Royal Air Force during the war. He was in Birmingham on VE Day. Looking back on VE Day, Albert remembered it being the most marvellous day of his life. He joined a crowd that went to a dance hall to celebrate!

Albert Jarrett Princess Elizabeth

Princess Elizabeth, who would one day become Queen Elizabeth II, wanted to join in with the celebrations. So Elizabeth and her sister, Margaret, snuck out and blended with the crowd in London. Elizabeth wore her military uniform so she wouldn’t be recognised!

How Can We Celebrate?

Since it’s the 80th anniversary of VE Day, people in the UK are being encouraged to spend four days celebrating, starting on Monday (5 May). You can celebrate by…

Taking part in the Great British Food Festival on 5 May. The idea of this festival is for people to cook special meals to celebrate VE Day with their family and friends. So why not ask your parents or carers if you could have a few friends over for dinner, or even arrange a street party?

Spend time learning about the Second World War by visiting bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zk94jxs

Visit a local war memorial, which is a good way of remembering the people who fought for our freedom! You can also take the time to remember people who are still fighting today, or people around the world who are the victims of war.

Go to a special event near you! You can find out about any special events that are being put on for VE Day by visiting ve-vjday80.gov.uk/events

Celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday!

From Trash to Treasure

Children from Austin House Family Centre’s Kids Alive After School Club in Southwick didn’t ‘waste’ any time in getting creative to celebrate Global Recycling Day!

The kids were asked to bring in items that they would normally throw in the bin, so that they could transform them into something new. Milk bottles, cereal boxes, yoghurt pots and more were all transformed into cool creations using a range of materials, such as paints, feathers and stickers. It was fantastic fun and a great reminder of the importance of caring for God’s creation by reusing and recycling.
