LLilo and Stitch in cinemas now

ilo has a very unusual ohana (which means ‘family’ in Hawaiian). She lives with her older sister, Nani, and she has a dog called Stitch that isn’t actually anything like a dog at all! In fact, Stitch can sometimes walk on two legs, can speak a few words … and he has fluffy blue fur! Plus, he’s completely wild and out of control (although you might have met a few dogs like that before).

Nani knows that Stitch is trouble, but Lilo is just happy to finally have a best friend. What Lilo doesn’t know is that her best friend was once called Experiment 626, and that he isn’t really a dog! Stitch is actually an alien, and he’s on the run from the United Galactic Federation after escaping from Planet Turo! He’s also being hunted by two other aliens called Pleakley and Jumba, who’ve been given the mission of capturing him!

Living with a naughty creature that’s being hunted down by aliens should be a recipe for disaster. However, Lilo knows exactly what Stitch needs. He needs to be taught about what it means to be in an ohana – a family where everyone belongs, and where no one gets left behind!

You can watch ‘Lilo and Stitch’ in cinemas now

My youngest daughter is three. This means she often gets upset about things, especially when she’s tired or hungry! Sometimes when she’s crying, and nothing I do seems to be helping, I ask her, ‘Do you need a hug?’ And guess what? Whatever the problem is, this is often all she needs to calm down.

I know my daughter well enough to know exactly what she needs, even if she doesn’t know. Just like Lilo knows exactly what Sti needs in the new film.

In the Bible, Jesus tells us that God knows us so well that he knows what we need before we even ask him. You can read this in Matthew 6:8. This chapter in the Bible goes on to say that God takes care of the birds and plants, and makes sure they have everything they need. We are the most precious things to God, so we can trust him to look after us too.

HChoose Love

ave you ever fallen out with your friends before? I remember having a big argument with a friend in primary school. It was horrible and our parents had to get involved. They told us that instead of fighting, we should be looking out for one another. Their advice left a big impression on us, and since then we’ve been the best of friends.

In Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia, it says that the Christians living there were having some huge disagreements too. Things got so bad that people were kicking others out of the church! They had allowed their differences to divide them, instead of remembering the most important thing they had in common – Jesus!

Paul reminded the Galatians of how important it was to follow Jesus’ command to love one

Read the comment below about the fruit of the Spirit

another. That’s an important commandment for us to follow too. Our natural human nature may be always wanting our own way – but a heart that’s been changed by the Holy Spirit wants to love others the best way possible.

When we love others, it’s like planting a seed in a garden. With God’s help, these seeds can grow to produce lots of fruit – the fruit of the Spirit.

After our parents spoke to us, my friend and I had a choice to make – would we look after each other or not? Similarly, you can choose to treat others with love, to make peace after a fight or to speak with kindness and gentleness. When you do, you’re choosing to be led by the Spirit. And the more you do this, the more God’s love will grow in you and others too!

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Habakkuk’s Complaints

Have you ever thought about a bad thing in this world and wondered whether God would do something about it? If you have, you’re not alone – a prophet called Habakkuk thought the same!

Habakkuk lived in Judah, and he couldn’t understand why God didn’t seem to do anything while the people of Judah lived evil lives! In fact, Habakkuk complained to God about it, because he thought that God wasn’t listening to him. However, God made it clear that he was actually listening. He was going to send the Babylonians to punish the people!

Habakkuk didn’t like this answer, because he knew that the Babylonians were evil too! So he complained to God again – how could God let an evil kingdom like Babylon exist? God answered Habakkuk by making it clear that Babylon’s evil would be punished. He reminded Habakkuk (and us) that he really does care about justice!

The answer is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was released on 21 December 1937! It was also the first animated film ever made.

The answers to the clues in this puzzle are anagrams of the answer immediately above or below, plus or minus one letter. The first one is filled in to give

Many Moods Competition

Disney’s new Lilo and Stitch film is out in cinemas now (find out more on page 3)! We’re big fans of Stitch at Kids Alive! In fact, if we were to make a list of the cutest creatures that have appeared in Disney films, we reckon that Stitch would have to be right at the top – even if he can sometimes be very naughty! If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be friends with Stitch, you can now find out with the Disney Stitch Many Moods Stitch soft toy. This Stitch isn’t just a soft toy – it’s got Stitch’s personality too! It can make more than 50 sounds and reactions, and it even has animated eyes. If you scratch Stitch’s head, he’ll show you his loveable side. However, if you rub his belly, you’d better be ready for some playful antics. And be careful about bouncing Stitch too much, as that will make him grumpy!

For your opportunity to win your own Disney Stitch Many Moods Stitch soft toy, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Remember to put ‘Disney Stitch Many Moods Competition’ in the subject box. Your entry needs to reach us by Friday 20 June when the winners will be chosen. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Disney Stitch Many Moods Competition, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ.

MAKE SHORTBREAD BISCUITS

What’s your favourite biscuit? It’s National Biscuit Day on Thursday (29 May), which will be the perfect day to munch on whichever biscuit you love the most. The Kids Alive! team particularly enjoy eating shortbread biscuits, so here’s a recipe for you to try!

WHAT YOU NEED

Bowl. Baking tray. Wooden spoon or spatula. Teaspoon. Baking paper. Rolling pin. Knife or biscuit cutter. 180g plain flour. Fork. 130g unsalted butter. 60g caster sugar. 1tsp vanilla extract. ¼ tsp of salt. Grown-up to help.

1

METHOD

1. Leave your butter out of the fridge until it’s room temperature. Then put the butter into a bowl with the sugar and mix them together with your wooden spoon until you create a pale, fluffy cream.

2. Add the vanilla extract and mix that in too!

3. It’s time to add the flour and salt to your bowl! Start mixing these into your buttery, sugary cream with your spoon – don’t panic if it’s a bit crumbly at first!

4. Squeeze the crumbly dough together with your hands and shape it into a ball.

5. Put some flour on to a surface, and then use the rolling pin to roll out the dough. If you’re struggling to roll out the dough, put it into the fridge for 10 minutes. Once the dough is rolled out, it should be about 1cm thick.

3 MIX, MIX! 6 9 5

6. Use a knife to cut the dough into long, rectangular biscuits. Or, if you’ve got a cookie cutter, use that instead!

7. Put a sheet of baking paper on to a baking tray, and then put your biscuits on to the tray. Then use a fork to poke a few holes into each biscuit.

8. Your biscuits need to be chilled before you cook them, so put them into the fridge for at least 30 minutes. While they’re cooling down, preheat your oven to around 170 degrees (gas mark 3).

9. Bake your biscuits for around 10 minutes, until the edges are golden. When you take them out of the oven, sprinkle them with some sugar! Once they’ve cooled down, you’ll be able to enjoy some of the most scrumptious biscuits ever created!

National Children’s Gardening Week

There are so many things that take a long time, but are actually really satisfying. It took Michelangelo four years to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and it takes around 10,000 hours of practice to become a master at a new skill!

One thing that might feel like it takes forever is gardening. You might plant a seed one day, expecting to see something brilliant the next morning – only to find that your pot of soil looks like it hasn’t changed at all. However, we want to encourage you this week that giving gardening actually worthwhile, even if you need to be a bit patient!

Get Gardening!

National Children’s Gardening Week starts today (24 May), and this is a week all about giving gardening a try. This week is the perfect time to start gardening, as the warm weather means that plants will grow a bit faster!

The organisers of National Children’s Gardening Week have put together some fab suggestions of gardening activities that you could get up to, and they’ve even put on some special events. You can find out more about these events at childrensgardeningweek.co.uk/gardening-events

Grow Yourself

Just like gardening makes plants grow, gardening can help you to grow into a better person too. Here are just a few benefits of gardening…

Spending time gardening means that we’re spending time outside. Studies have shown that spending time in nature is good for our mental health.

It teaches us the importance of being patient, and also teaches us to be responsible! Gardening involves caring for plants that are growing.

Gardening is a way of having fun outside, and of learning new skills. If you have a garden when you’re a grown-up, you’ll be glad that you started gardening now!

Growing food in our gardens encourages us to eat healthily. You might not normally like eating carrots, but we reckon you’ll want to nibble on one if you helped to grow it.

What Could You Grow?

Why not try growing a few herbs? Herbs are plants that can be used in cooking to give food lots of flavour. Even if you don’t have a garden, you could grow herbs in a pot in your home. You can find some ideas of herbs that you could grow at kidsgardening.org/resources/gardening-basics-six-easy-to-grow-herbs.

If you have a garden, you could ask your parents or carers to help you plant a few flowers outside. During the month of May, some of the best flowers to plant are primroses and cornflowers. You could also help your parents or carers with normal gardening tasks, such as weeding.

Even More Activities!

Even though we’ve given you plenty of ideas already, you might still be looking for something fun to do to celebrate National Children’s Gardening Week! If that’s the case, you could…

Make a miniature garden! This is a particularly great activity to do if you haven’t got a garden. All you need to do is fill a container with soil or compost, and then add plant seeds. For instructions on how to make a mini garden, head to childrensgardeningweek.co.uk/things-to-do/make-a-mini-garden

Make a miniature pond! If you don’t fancy filling a container with soil, you could fill it with water instead! Then, after a couple of days, add some pond plants and rocks. To find out more, check out childrensgardeningweek.co.uk/things-to-do/make-a-mini-pond

On Easter Sunday, families and friends from Maidstone Salvation Army met for a picnic and Easter egg hunt. It was part of the first WOW (Walking on Water) meet at the Water Sports Centre in Mote Park. Children climbed on to swan or dragon pedalos, while others ventured out in canoes or on paddleboards. Letters had been placed on some pedalos, and in order to claim an Easter egg, people had to rearrange the letters to reveal the Easter phrase – Jesus is alive! Everyone helped each other … and only a few people got wet! While this game happened, those on land searched for bunny footprints to find letters for another Easter phrase – Jesus loves me. At the end of the trail, people celebrated by putting their heads in an Easter egg outline to become an Easter egg themselves! Then there was chocolate to enjoy, as everyone celebrated being together in God’s beautiful world – and also being loved and saved by Jesus!
