GABBY'S DOLLHOUSE: THE MOVIE

What’s the most amazing thing that you own?

Perhaps it’s a gift that was given to you when you were much younger, or maybe it’s a spectacular crafty creation that you proudly display in your room. Now imagine discovering that this magnificent item has gone missing. In fact, missing isn’t the right word – it’s been taken by someone else!

That’s exactly what happens to a girl called Gabby in Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie. Gabby owns something truly marvellous – a dollhouse full of little kitties. What’s brilliant about these felines (who are known as the Gabby Cats) is that although they look like toys, they can walk and talk! So when Gabby and her Grandma Gigi decide to go on an adventure, there’s no way that Gabby’s going to leave her dollhouse at home.

However, while Gabby’s exploring the city of Cat Francisco, the worst thing possible happens –Gabby loses her dollhouse! This dollhouse is then discovered by a lady called Vera. Vera is obsessed with cats, and she believes that this dollhouse will make a brilliant addition to her collection. Now Gabby must set out on a mission to save the Gabby Cats and get her dollhouse back!

You can watch ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie’ in cinemas now

Gabby’s most precious thing is her dollhouse, so no wonder she’s worried that it’s gone. Of course, it’s not just the dollhouse itself that Gabby doesn’t want to lose, it’s what lives inside it – her Gabby Cats! These feline friends are the things she loves most.

This reminds me of the parable of the lost sheep in the Bible –you can read this in Luke 15:1–7. A parable is a story that can teach us a lesson, and in this story a shepherd leaves his flock to search for one sheep that has got lost. Jesus told this story to help explain how every person is precious to him.

Even when we get a bit lost and do things that are wrong, Jesus still loves us. And like the lost sheep that the shepherd brought home, Jesus will always welcome us back and give us a special place in his family.

A Voice of Freedom

Copy Jesus

As the uncle of a two-year-old boy, I have a very important job – to make him have a big, out-of-control giggling fit! One of my best ways to get him chuckling is to copy every action that he does, such as sticking his tongue out (and even, one time, copying when he picked his nose).

I’ve become an expert at copying my nephew, but this week’s Bible cartoon encourages us to become experts at copying someone else –Jesus! This cartoon tells us about a letter that was written by Paul to a church in Philippi. Paul was reminding the church that Jesus loved them. He was also encouraging them to show that same love to others!

One of the ways that Paul told the church they should do this was by putting the needs of the people around them above their own. They should do this knowing that this was exactly what Jesus had done for them, as Jesus had even given his life for them!

Read the comment on the right about showing Jesus’ love to others

So what does caring for the needs of others look like nowadays? It might look like sharing some of a delicious snack with a hungry friend. Or it might look like chatting with a lonely person at your church, even though you really want to play football outside. Perhaps it looks like standing up for someone who’s being bullied, even though that might be really scary. Jesus gave up his life for us, so what can we do to show love to those around us?

Copy the Cartoon

We’ve learnt that we should copy the way that Jesus showed love to others – but how good are you at copying cartoons? Put your skills to the test by copying the drawing below, which is from this week’s cartoon, into the empty box!

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

What makes someone a good Christian? Is it the clothes they wear, the languages they speak or whether they follow old religious rules? In a letter Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia, he made it clear that those kinds of things didn’t matter. That’s because every Christian is equally important to God!

In Galatia, Jewish Christians were trying to force non-Jewish believers (known as Gentiles) to follow Jewish rules. This was a problem in lots of the early churches. In fact, Paul had even had an argument with Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, about it!

So Paul wrote to these churches to tell them that new Christians didn’t need to become Jewish –especially if they were only doing this to make other people happy. Instead, what really mattered was following and serving Jesus. Everyone in the church should remember that God loved them exactly as they were.

Cartographer!

My name is Martin and I’m a cartographer. A cartographer is someone who creates and explains maps. I work at a university, which has a huge library of more than two million maps! Students and researchers come to me when they’re studying different parts of the world. My job is to help them find the right map and understand what it shows – or even help them to make a brand-new map of their own.

On a normal day, I talk to researchers, give talks and teach students how to make their own maps. Maps aren’t just for finding your way – they can reveal history, track wildlife, help charities deliver aid after disasters and much more. Old or new, maps give us clues about the world and make confusing places easier to understand. Some new maps are used on phones or computers. Others are on paper that is hundreds of years old and must be handled very carefully! Maps can show anywhere on Earth–and sometimes even other planets! With so much variety, my job is never boring. Best of all, I get to help people do important work using maps. Geography was my favourite subject at school, so if it’s yours too, maybe you could be a cartographer! It’s a fun job where you help people explore and understand our amazing world.

Helping-Hand Appeal

Earlier this year, we told you about a Salvation Army project in Zimbabwe called Raising Champion Farmers. As part of the project, 300 farmers have been trained in conservation agriculture – a way of farming that protects the soil, helps crops grow better and enables communities to overcome the effects of climate change.

Meet Memory

Memory Showaki is one of the farmers who has taken part in the project. She lives in a village called Chigisi. She has a small plot of land near the lake, a short walk from her home.

With hard work, she’s able to grow enough food to support her family, but it wasn’t always like this. When Memory’s husband sadly died, she had to look after her family on her own.

‘My husband used to help me by paying school fees and other things, but when he died I had to stand for

Memory used to struggle to grow enough food to feed her family. Changing weather patterns meant there were long, dry seasons with almost no rain, and then sudden, heavy downpours.

‘When there was a lot of rain, the seeds that we planted washed away and the soil would also be washed away.’

Raising Champion Farmers

When Memory heard about the Raising Champion Farmers project, she signed up straight away. Memory and the other farmers learnt about conservation agriculture, which is better for the soil and for the crops.

‘We learnt a lot about how the soil can be changed. We didn’t know about preparing compost, so we got to know about preparing a thermal compost. It gives everything that the soil needs. Instead of using fertilisers, we use compost.’

The project didn’t just improve Memory’s crops, it has helped her whole community. People started working together, sharing ideas and supporting each other.

‘These men and women have been transformed. They work together, giving each other ideas and helping each other. We help each other in our work – and even when learning, we do it together.’

Memory knows what it’s like to struggle, but these days her crops are thriving.

‘It’s my hope and prayer for my children and grandchildren to learn about this work – working in the garden, working in the fields and learning about conservation agriculture.’

Helping-Hand

The Helping-Hand Appeal is a fundraising campaign run by The Salvation Army (who publish Kids Alive!). This year it’s all about food security – making sure people have enough nutritious food to live healthy, active lives.

Money raised will support projects, such as Raising Champion Farmers in Zimbabwe, helping more people like Memory to make the best use of their land and overcome food insecurity.
