The Battle of Hastings was fought in 1066, Florence Nightingale had a pet owl and … OK, we’ll stop –we can tell we’re already putting some of you to sleep! There are so many interesting things to learn about history, but reading facts in a textbook isn’t always the best way to discover them. Instead, if you want to really delve into some of the most fascinating moments in history, you could go to museums. You could even visit a few of the places where incredibly important events took place!
If that sounds brilliant to you, then you’ll love Heritage Open Days – which started yesterday (12 September). This is a 10-day-long festival that’s held every September, and it’s all about celebrating the history and culture of England. Plus, there are plenty of similar festivals taking place around the rest of the UK. During these festivals, historical places will be opening their doors to visitors – and they’ll be letting everyone in for free!
This includes Strawberry Field, which is an attraction in Liverpool that’s run by The Salvation Army (who publish Kids Alive!). One of the reasons why Strawberry Field is so spectacular is because a famous band called the Beatles named a song after it! So if you live near Liverpool, why not celebrate our history and culture by taking a trip to Strawberry Field?

I love learning about history. One of my favourite things to learn about at school was the Tudors. I remember going on a school trip to Hatfield House, which is where Queen Elizabeth l was living when she found out she was going to be queen. It was so interesting to walk around the rooms and see people dressed up in Tudor outfits. It made it all come alive for me and seem more real – rather than just something I’d read about in a book.
There’s so much amazing history to read in the Bible too, including all the stories about Jesus’ life. But being a Christian is more than just reading about Jesus in a book. That’s just the beginning! You’ve also got to get out and share the things Jesus teaches us with others. That’s how we help others to learn about Jesus, and make the stories really come alive!

Iwonder if you’ve ever been lost. Has there lbeen a time when you didn’t know which way to go? Or maybe you were with a grown-up and they didn’t know which direction to go in.
Sometimes I have to travel to places I’ve never been before. Can you guess what I use to help me find my way? I use the map on my phone. I put in where I need to go, and then it cleverly shows me the best way to get there. But even when the map is showing me which way to go, I still sometimes take a wrong turn!

Read the comment below about how we can show kindness to others
A similar thing happened to God’s people in the Old Testament. They kept going the wrong way. What I mean is, they kept forgetting to follow what God wanted. They judged people and got angry with each other, instead of loving one another. So God gave special messages to people (you might have heard of them – we call them prophets). The prophets told the people what God wanted them to do – stop treating each other badly, and instead, show compassion and love towards each other. That’s how to show you love God.
Sometimes I go the wrong way too. I forget to follow God’s message, and I focus on what I think is right, rather than what God says is right. Has that ever happened to you? Just like in the Bible, God keeps reminding me to love him and love others, so I can go the right way. Listen to him and he’ll remind you which way you need to go too.
says Hayley Bailey
Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.
Last week, we learnt about how a man called Saul became a Christian. What we didn’t mention was that Saul changed his name to Paul and then travelled to lots of places to tell people about Jesus!
With friends such as Barnabas, Silas and Timothy, Paul went on multiple journeys to places such as Cyprus, Athens and Ephesus. Everywhere he went, he shared the story of Jesus – and lots of people became Christians!
Over the years, Paul went through plenty of hard times. People who didn’t like what Paul was saying would often try to hurt him, which meant that he sometimes had to run away! However, Paul never stopped sharing the gospel.
After many years, Paul knew that his mission was coming to an end. He began an important journey to Jerusalem, and he was ready to face some of his toughest challenges yet.

Hello, readers, i’VE LOST A VERY IMPORTANT OBJECT SOMEWHERE IN THIS ISSUE. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP ME FIND IT? i HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE HERE.
Hi, I’m Ellie and I’m 27 years old – although I turn 28 this Wednesday (17 September)! In my spare time I enjoy running and going for long walks with friends and family. I first studied a geography course at university, before I changed my mind midway through. I decided I wanted to become a children’s nurse! This means that I help to care for poorly children. My days are always different from one another. No two days look the same, as I might be caring for newborn babies on one day, and then teenagers on the next! There are also lots of different illnesses that I help to treat. This makes my job interesting and fun. The best thing about my job is that I make the children and families feel safe and happy while in hospital. I try to get a smile and some giggles each day. My advice to anyone who wants to become a nurse is to follow that desire. You can always change your mind, just like I did!

Picture this – you pick up a pen to create some spectacular artwork. Perhaps you start to draw a rocket that’s about to blast into space. Or maybe you design a giant, prickly cactus. However, there’s something extra special about your artwork –it’s actually in 3D, which means that you can touch and feel it! That might sound ridiculous or even impossible to you, but the 3Doodler Start+ Essentials Pen Set actually makes this possible! This set combines art and design with technology in a spectacular way. All you need to do is charge up a special pen and turn it on. Then a filament (which is a bit like a thin wire) comes out of the pen and hardens rapidly, so that you can create 3D models of absolutely anything! Plus, if you’re struggling to think of what to create, you can take on 1 of the 10 projects in the set’s activity guide.
For your opportunity to win your own 3Doodler Start+ Essentials Pen Set, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Remember to put ‘3Doodler Competition’ in the subject box. Your entry needs to reach us by Friday 10 October when the winners will be chosen. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: 3Doodler Competition, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ.

If you could create the perfect outfit, what would it look like? Would you make something simple and stylish, or would you think outside the box? You might design a fashionable dress, or you might make an outfit with a fluffy coat, a purple top hat and a pair of football boots! Since London Fashion Week begins this Thursday (18 September), show us what your perfect (or wildest) outfit would look like by designing it on top of the drawing of a person below. Then, if you’d like to share your artwork with other readers, email your design to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Make sure you write ‘Design an Outfit’ in the subject box and give us your full name, age and address. Alternatively, you can post your colouring to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ. One last reminder, if you’re sending by post remember to fill in the details below so we know who you are. We send a gift to everyone whose colouring we publish, so don’t miss out!

Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
What could ruin a trip to the beach on a sunny day? How about losing your towel, discovering that a seagull’s eaten your sandwich or stepping into a wave only to find that the sea’s as cold as an ice lolly?
We think one of the main things that can make a day at the beach a bit less fun is litter. To be honest, some beaches are absolutely covered in rubbish! It’s hard to have a fab time making sandcastles and catching waves when you’re surrounded by plastic bags and bottles.
We’re not the only ones who think that our beaches need a good clean. From Friday 19 to Sunday 28 September, lots of people in the UK will be picking up litter as part of the Great British Beach Clean.
They’ll be aiming to get rid of as much litter as they can, and they’ll also be collecting information about the kinds of litter that they gather. This will then be used in the future to help to make brilliant changes to our laws that will help our planet.
There are so many benefits to taking part in the Great British Beach Clean…
The rubbish that washes up on our shores is terrible for marine animals, so by litter picking, you’re helping to protect them.
You’re caring for your local community by cleaning a place that lots of people enjoy going to!
It’s a great opportunity to spend time outside and to get active.
If you’d like to take part in a beach clean near you, you can find out more by visiting mcsuk.org/what-you-can-do/join-a-beach-clean/great-british-beach-clean. This isn’t something that you need to do alone – bring your friends and family, and if you’ve got one, bring your dog too!
Have you heard of Coton in the Elms before? It’s a village in Derbyshire – and it’s the place that’s the furthest away from the sea in the whole of the UK! If you live there, or in any other place that’s nowhere near a beach, then it’s probably impossible for you to take part in a beach clean.
However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t take some time to help clean your community. You could pick up litter in the streets near your school, outside your church, in the park or somewhere else entirely. You can still be a litter-picking hero!
If you’re going to go litter picking, you should…
Dress the part! Wear shoes that completely cover your feet, and gloves that will protect your hands. You’ll also want to bring along some equipment that will help you to do the best job, such as bin bags and litter pickers. If you haven’t got these items (we imagine most of you don’t own a litter picker), then you can get in touch with your local council to see if they’ll lend you them.
Be careful! You should always litter pick during the daytime, and with a grown-up. You should also be careful about what you pick up. You should never pick up something sharp, such as broken glass or syringes.
Take photos! It might be hard to notice just how much of a difference litter picking is making, so take a photo before and after you’ve cleaned a place. This means you’ll be able to see how much your litter picking has helped your community!
Recycle! Check to make sure whether anything you’ve collected can be recycled, as recycling is much better for the planet than just throwing all of your rubbish into a random bin.
Help to protect our planet by taking part in the Great British Beach Clean!
