Imagine moving 3,000 miles every single year with nothing but your best friends by your side! That’s exactly what monarch butterfies get up to each autumn and it’s exactly what a new flm called Butterfly Tale is about. A big group of monarch butterfies are getting ready to fy all the way from Canada to Mexico. Patrick, a butterfy with only one working wing, is going to be left behind. He can’t fy with just one wing, but how could he possibly miss out on the adventure of a lifetime? Joined by his best friend, a caterpillar called Marty, Patrick sneaks into the back of a trailer. It’s fown by Jennifer, a butterfy with a big secret, and it holds the only food that monarch butterf can eat – milkweed.

This is no easy journey and before they know it Patrick, Marty and Jennifer are launched into an unbelievable adventure. They’re even hunted by three evil birds who are out for revenge! However, if they make it to Mexico in one piece, they’ll learn that you don’t need to have two working wings to be a hero!

Watch ‘Butterfly Tale’ in cinemas from 19 April

Patrick from Butterfy Tale goes on quite a journey during the flm. Because Patrick only has one working wing, he can’t go on the group migration. However, later in the flm, a friend tells him he’s capable of more than he thinks. She even tells him ‘now is the time to believe in yourself!’

Sometimes it’s not always easy to believe in ourselves, though. Sometimes I have a little voice in my head that tells me things such as, ‘You’re not good enough’. I even felt a bit like that when I started as Editor of Kids Alive!

Thankfully Jesus is my friend, so I was able to talk to him about my worries. After speaking with him I felt more confdent in myself. So if there’s something you’re struggling with, remember Jesus is your friend too and I’m sure he’d tell you ‘now is the time to believe in yourself!’

HWhy Am I Always Picked Last?

ave you ever been picked last for something? I used to be the least sporty kid in my class at school. When I played football, I was more likely to trip over the ball than to score a goal. I was always the last pick for any team in PE and I used to beat myself up over it. Why couldn’t I be sporty like the other kids?

In this week’s Bible story, there was another person who was also picked last. God had rejected Saul as king over Israel and sent Samuel to meet a man called Jesse. This was so Samuel could fgure out which of Jesse’s eight sons would be the next king.

Jesse introduced Samuel to seven of his sons – the oldest, the tallest, the most handsome. I imagine it was a bit like watching a fashion show, but none of these men were who God had chosen! It was the eighth and youngest son, a shepherd called David, who God chose to be king.

Read the comment on the right about why it’s what’s on the inside that counts

It can be really easy to focus so much on what we can’t do that we forget that God made us exactly as we’re meant to be! God told Samuel, ‘People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart’ (1 Samuel 16:7, International Children’s Bible). That’s not to say that it’s bad to be the oldest or tallest or sportiest, because those are gifts from God – but let’s remember that God cares about what’s on the inside. That’s why David, the last pick, became king.

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

The Israelites are freed

When Moses was a grown-up, God called out to him from a burning bush. God told Moses he’d seen how much the Israelites had been suffering as the Egyptians’ slaves. God told Moses to return to Egypt and to tell Pharaoh to let the people go. But Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go free. So God sent 10 plagues to Egypt as a sign to convince Pharaoh, but still Pharaoh said no. Eventually Pharaoh agreed and the Israelites were able to leave. But as they reached the Red Sea, Pharaoh sent his army after them. In a fnal act of wonder against the Egyptians, God parted the Red Sea and the Israelites travelled safely across it. However, when the Egyptian army tried to cross too, the waters fell back and they were washed away.

Optical illusions use colour, light or patterns to confuse our brains – that means the illusions look different to what is actually there.

Is there a triangle in the middle of this image? Technically there isn’t – the other shapes just line up to give the illusion of a triangle. Our brains fll in the gaps so that we can see the triangle shape.

Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Leonardo da Vinci was born in Italy on 15 April 1452. He was an awesome artist and an all-round genius. He even painted the Mona Lisa! Now, 572 years after his birth, we’ll be celebrating World Art Day on Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday. W

When you think about art, you might just think about paintings or drawings – but art is so much more than that. On 15 April 2024, artists around the world will, of course, be painting and drawing. However, they’ll also be carving sculptures, taking photographs, making comic books and even crafting jewellery!

World Art Day is all about being creative and expressing yourself in lots of fun ways. It’s also about being part of a community of people who love to make things, no matter where they are in the world.

Fabulous Artists

You’ve already learned a little bit about Leonardo da Vinci, but there are tons of artists worth knowing about. Some amazing artists are out and about making clever creations today.

Banksy is a graffti artist with a big secret –no one actually knows who he is! Banksy uses spray paint to create art pieces in public places. We never know where he’s going to pop up next.

Tara Donovan makes sculptures out of everyday objects like pencils and rubber bands. She once made a giant cloud out of cups!

Liu Xiaodong is famous for taking his paintbrush and canvas out onto the streets with him to paint pictures of the world around him. In 2016, Liu even used robots to make paintings!

Your Turn!

You don’t need to be 500 years old and have the frst name of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle to be an artist. World Art Day is the perfect opportunity for you to improve your art skills.

Creating art is not only fun – it’s actually really good for you. When you paint or draw or make something, it can help you to relax. In fact, research has shown that making art is great for your mental well-being and can even reduce stress.

Pick Up Your Brushes

Here are some suggestions to help you to create your own arty masterpieces.

Turn the inside of an old box into a room –like the inside of a spaceship or a submarine!

Get out and about like Liu Xiaodong. Go for a walk with your family and stop to draw something that you see.

Create a sculpture out of your family’s recycling pile and then photograph it.

Team up with your friends to paint portraits of each other.

Use your art skills for a good cause by taking part in the ‘Sketch for Survival Junior’ competition, which is about creating artwork of endangered animals. For more information about the contest, search ‘Sketch for Survival Junior 2024’ online.

Learn from the greats by visiting an art gallery such as the Tate Modern or the Royal Academy of Arts.

Make Your Own Comic

What are you waiting for? There’s so much to do, so grab your colouring pencils and your paint palettes. Let’s get st‘art’ed!

There’s lots of art in every issue of Kids Alive! Just look at the Bible comic, Kiddo or Patch’s Pals! Use these boxes below to create your own comic strip.

Have a wonderful time celebrating World Art Day!
