Out and about in Zurich TRANSPORT With a ZürichCARD you can enjoy unlimited travel on public travel, as well as numerous discounts. SHOPPING 150 years ago, part of the city’s fortifications were transformed into what is now arguably the most famous shopping road in the world – the Bahnhofstrasse. Zürich’s shopping mile has contributed largely to the city's reputation as an El Dorado for shoppers and is a top address for banks, exclusive fashion boutiques, department stores and street cafés.

ÜETLIBERG For a wonderfully relaxing break, you can take a train up the Üetliberg mountain – just 20 minutes from the city centre – and go for a walk or a bike ride, enjoying glorious views over the city, the lake and the Alps. THE HISTORY OF SWITZERLAND Close to the Main railway station, the Swiss National Museum occupies a fairy tale castle that’s more than 100 years old and now features a brand-new extension. A permanent exhibition called ‘History of Switzerland’ brings the country’s past vividly to life with fascinating original artefacts. The park behind the museum is one of the most beautiful in the city. KUNSTHAUS ZÜRICH The special exhibitions staged by Zürich’s Kunsthaus (art museum) have a world-class reputation. As well as the world’s most important and extensive body of work by Alberto Giacometti, it also includes collections by Edvard Munch and the Nordic Expressionists, and there’s Swiss painting and works from the classic modern period too.

THE CHARMING OLD TOWN The famous old town district of Niederdorf is affectionately known by locals as Dörfli (the ‘little village’). With its petite boutiques, antiquarian bookshops, craft studios, bars and cafés, it’s a delight to explore by day and by night, when the winding, car-free alleys burst into life. The Niederdorf also perfectly embodies the city’s unique charm. The Schober-Péclard boutique and confectioners is a listed building that stylishly combines all the elements that make a trip to Zürich so special: history, architecture and shopping. THE CITY SEEN FROM THE WATER The glittering reflections of the sunlight, the splashing of the water, the scent of the fresh air; a cruise on one of the Limmat river boats is a treat for all the senses. The tour even takes in three stops on Lake Zürich. ZÜRICH’S TOP DISH When in Zürich, be sure to sample its most famous dish – Zürcher Geschnetzeltes; sliced veal in a cream sauce and served with rösti. A particularly tasty version is prepared at the traditional Zunfthaus zur Waag, a historic guild house dating back to 1315.

LINDENHOF Lindenhof is an oasis of tranquillity in the heart of Zürich. From this tree-shaded square, high above the Limmat river, you enjoy sweeping views across the rooftops of Zürich; taking in its churches, romantic old town, pretty lake shores – reaching all the way to the Alps. Directly below the Lindenhof, along the Limmat, stretches one of Zürich’s oldest and most picturesque quarters, the Schipfe – home to long-established workshops and small boutiques selling quality products ST. PETER CHURCH St. Peter church is the oldest parish church in Zürich, with the original 9th century foundation walls still seen today beneath the chancel. It also boasts the largest clock face in Europe. Until 1911, the church tower was used as a fire watch post. The clock face measures 8.7m in diameter. There are five bells dating from 1880 in the tower – the largest of which weighs over six tons without its clapper. CLUBS Zürich boasts the highest density of clubs in Switzerland and, here, you can never turn up too late. From a house music party in the legendary Kaufleuten and 80s hits at Mascotte (the oldest club in the city), to a gay event at the Labor Bar – parties really get going after 11pm and continue into the small hours of the morning. There’s no such thing as official closing times here.
