Love is in the air I love this time of year! Spring is just around the corner, and I have the urge to deep clean everything in sight and send everything that hasn’t been worn or used in the past 12 months to the charity shop. There’s something therapeutic about decluttering and organising our living spaces; parting with items that no longer serve a purpose. It will clear my mind for a few months, before child number five returns home from uni with a roomful of stuff in tow! Love is in the air too, as we will soon be celebrating Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. So, if you need some inspiration, take a look at our gift guides and check out our recently reviewed delightful afternoon tea experience in London, which would be the perfect Mother’s Day treat or great for an outing with family and friends. Also in this issue, Christine Colbert from Dress Cheshire takes us into her cute pre-loved fashion cottage on Prestbury high street. Read more on page 16. As winter draws to a close, the clocks go forward and the days start to get longer and warmer, our thoughts turn to summer holidays. The anticipation of booking that trip, whether it’s a city break, an outdoor adventure or the holiday of a lifetime, is so exciting and tied to the one New Year’s resolution (to travel more) I’ll never break. So, if you’re thinking of heading off for Easter, we have some recommendations for the best short getaways in Europe. Get planning! Enjoy reading your magazine, have a happy Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, and don’t forget to enter our competition on page 12 to win a

Care homes - what you need to know, and how they can help Suzi Sumegi, General Manager at Halecroft Grange care home in Hale Barns, talks us through life in a care home and what to expect. loved one is in the early stages of the condition, a move later on to a different care home can be a big upheaval. Some care homes that offer dementia care, like ours, will also have team members that have been specially trained, and a fully tailored environment suited to those living with dementia. Are all care homes the same? How do you choose what one is best? Why might I consider a care home for a loved one? Everyone’s situation is different, but one of the main reasons you may want to consider care for a loved one is because they need more support than they’re currently receiving. This may be because their mental or physical health has deteriorated, they’re struggling with essential household tasks, or are at risk of falling. Another key reason that may be overlooked, is that they’re feeling lonely or isolated. People understand that care homes of course offer care, but don’t realise how important the social aspect is – many residents join us for health reasons, but end up with a whole new lease of life not just because of the care, but because they’ve made new friends, got out and about again with our support, are eating freshly cooked nutritious meals, and enjoying new activities. What types of care can they offer? There are three main categories of care – residential, dementia and nursing – however, even if a care home does not offer nursing, they are likely to still be able to support residents with a wide range of health conditions with their care team, and with the support of the district nurses and GPs they already work with. If your loved one has a diagnosis of dementia, you’ll want to narrow your search to care homes that are able to offer this type of care, as, even if you’re

I’m biased of course – but I think Halecroft Grange is special! There are practical things to look for around facilities your loved one might enjoy – does the home have a café or social space they’d like to use, or a large garden space if they love being outdoors, for example. At Halecroft Grange, we are able to offer beautiful, self-contained couple suites to those who wish to remain living with their partner. We also allow residents to bring pets in our home (subject to assessment), which proves to be a huge source of comfort to many of our residents residing here, at Halecroft Grange. I’d recommend doing a little research on care homes in the area (carehome.co.uk is an independent review site of all care homes, and a great place to start), and use this to create a long-list based on location, important facilities and the look and feel for the type of care that you’re interested in. You can then try to plan some time to see a few - most homes will be happy to welcome you in, and answer any questions you may have. Can you still enjoy your hobbies and your favourite homemade meal at Halecroft Grange? Of course! Lifestyle is incredibly important at Halecroft Grange, and we take great pride in this. We spend time with each new resident and their loved ones, learning all about their life, their choices and preferences, so everything is completely tailored to their wishes.

Each of our residents meets with the Head Chef when they first join us, so we can make sure we have some of their favourites on the menu, and there’s always plenty of choice. As for hobbies, we run activities every day and there’s always something going on – in fact, new residents are often surprised at what they can do! Whether it’s a favourite pastime or something completely different – we’ll make it happen. What’s the proudest moment in your career? There’s been many – I’m so lucky to have such a great team, and an amazing home to manage. A recent one has definitely been getting our Outstanding CQC rating, which we were awarded just a few months’ ago. It’s incredibly hard to get an Outstanding, so it was wonderful recognition of the home and team here, and how well we care for residents. Why did you choose a career in care/ what’s your background? Care has always been at the heart of what I want to do, and I’ve been working in this field for over 38 years. I’m a qualified nurse, and I also obtained a certificate in management to know how to best support my team here. It’s such a rewarding job – I wouldn’t want to do anything else, anywhere else! Spring is on its way, so time to inject your wardrobe with bright and breezy hues Now is the time to give your wardrobe an uplift and what better way than with bright and breezy blues and neutrals. Such a far cry away from the winter’s dark velvets, rich reds and merry sparkle, this is the way to go if you want to feel more spring-like. There’s nothing more versatile than a blue and white shirt dress, which you can wear with white trainers and a jacket for almost any daytime occasion, from a weekend brunch to a day in the office, and we just love the one featured on these pages from Cotton Traders. And let’s not forget that perennial favourite, denim. A denim shirt is a fantastic investment because it can be worn in different ways. On chilly days, you can layer it over a t-shirt or a turtleneck sweater and when it gets warmer, you can throw it over a bikini top, wear as an overshirt or match with a pair of shorts. It’s a win-win.

PEOPLE

She’s in FASHION How a side hustle turned into a game-changing eComms business for Dress Cheshire owner Christine Colbert At first glance, Dress Cheshire, with its cute cottage premises on Prestbury high street, looks like the sort of independent boutique you may find in many affluent villages in the UK. But behind the gorgeous window display filled with beautiful clothes is a booming eComms business in pre-loved fashion, which ticks all the boxes when it comes to ethical shopping and sustainability.

The driving force behind Dress is Christine Colbert, a marketing executive who started her clothing business as a “side hustle” but hit the fashion zeitgeist and can now cherry pick her stock from the unwanted wardrobes of around 2,000 fashionistas. Dress isn’t just a second-hand clothing operation though, it is a selection of clothes and accessories that have been curated with great care, targeting a customer base that loves fashion but prefers not to pay full price for the privilege of owning a designer label. And while a quick flick through the stock will reveal names like Balenciaga, Celine, Hermès and Jimmy Choo, it’s not all hefty price tags. In fact, you’re just as likely to pick up a chain store classic as you are a catwalk cast-off. “The one thing we are is ruthless when it comes to what we take in,” reveals Dress owner, Christine. “We have built up an amazing pool of almost 2,000 sellers – most of whom are in the local area, although we are attracting others from further afield, which is incredible because when I opened the shop in November 2018, I thought we’d have about 50 and we now have people signing up every day.”

16 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK

PEOPLE Christine hit on the idea of opening a second-hand dress agency by observing the habits of her immaculately dressed neighbours in Cheshire’s Golden Triangle.

“I used to sit in our local restaurant Coast looking at everyone coming in wearing a beautiful outfit and I never saw them in it again,” she recalls.

“My first thought was, ‘What are they doing with their clothes?’” The truth was that they were probably hoarding them at home, until Christine had the bright idea of selling them on their behalf. “I definitely recognised a real gap in Cheshire, and I was right,” she says. “There are lots of self-serve businesses out there, like eBay and Vinted, but with us, you just bring your things here and we do it all for you. We have a purpose-built photography studio now, so things are professionally photographed. We take all the hard work out of it. And we are commission-only, so we’ve no listing fees or anything, no hidden extras, we are as transparent as they come.” Shop at Dress and you can find current season Dior and Chanel for a fraction of the price they’d cost in a London boutique, but just because you’re buying from a dress agency doesn’t make it a bargain basement experience. In fact, one of the things which makes Dress unique is that it offers its customers the same kind of service they’d get in any smart shop. “I’ve been buying second-hand for more than 20 years, but what I did know was that nobody was doing it in a boutique high-end way,” explains Christine. “Often second-hand stores are rammed full of clothes and are not attractive places. That was something I was really keen on avoiding. I wanted to turn this into a nice experience.”

Originally, Christine had intended Dress to be a small shop, serving the community. In no way was an eComms business on the agenda, well, at least not until the Covid pandemic struck. Dress had only been open 15 months when, along with every non-essential shop in the UK, it was forced to close. “Invariably, I turned to social media and social selling,” says Christine, who, around the same time, launched her incredibly successful Friday Night Live sessions in which she personally showcases around 20 outfits that can be bought during the hour-long QVC-style broadcast. “I would now attribute over 90 percent of our sales to online. From buying directly from us and never visiting the shop to clicking and collecting. Even if they’re someone who has never bought online, they’ve seen it online before they come to the shop. “Without the online sales strategy and social selling, we wouldn’t exist. And that is now, of course, feeding a beast. In a good way. What it now means is we have a national eComms brand of fabulous, second-hand clothes, as well as shoes and handbags. “We have great, better-quality brands and people tell us: ‘You’ve changed the way I look’. “We’ve driven loads of footfall into the village too. The number of people who drive hours to come and see us and want us to recommend local restaurants, cafés and hotels. We know we’ve had the ripple effect and, equally, I’m sure we’ve benefitted from the ripple effect of other great facilities that are in the village.”

“What the hell is she dressed as?” My secrets to looking

COOL

Jo Davies, Owner, Black White Denim

without looking a fool

Like all women my age, I want to look cool and contemporary without overstepping the mark. Just because I own a clothes shop doesn’t mean I’m immune to the dread of pulling a look together. Each morning, without fail, the pressure is on as I stand in front of the bedroom mirror, wondering, “Does this really work?”

Have your entire selection on display Don’t hide stuff in drawers or under the bed. Don’t cram hangers into cupboard space or pile items so high you can’t reach them, let alone see what’s available. Organise your dressing area as if you would your fridge or pantry.

Over the years, I’ve developed my eye. Here’s my fool-proof guide to keeping your cool while everyone else is losing theirs: Don’t own loads of clothes

The more you have to play with, the more likely you are to go wrong. More is NEVER more in the wardrobe department. My seasonal wardrobe contains: three pairs of jeans; two tailored cotton shirts; two silk shirts; three blazers; three tailored, black pants; one leather jacket; five jumpers; half a dozen t-shirts; three dresses; and a handful of accessories, which I wear year after year.

Apply the rule of FIVE to every outfit Create each look from a maximum of five pieces: one bottom, up to two tops (layering) and a jacket and shoes/boots/ trainers of choice. Coats aren’t included in the five as they’re weather dependent. Nor are handbags, sunglasses and jewellery. Of the five pieces, four of them should be cool classics. That leaves just one as the ‘fashion’ piece that quietly confirms your finger is on the pulse of what’s current. Work out in advance what works with what Loose tops work best with slim bottoms, fitted tops with more relaxed jeans/ trousers. If you’re hippy, don’t draw attention by wearing a top that cuts you off at your widest part. Instead, choose something more lengthening, such as a bottom-skimming shirt or tunic top.

Don’t be afraid to wear clothes on repeat My wardrobe is so compact because I wear the same pieces over and over. Commando leggings, long-line knits, button-through shirts, blazers layered over vests and shirts, dresses over jeans and many more go-to combinations that I feel good in. I wear them until they’re worn out and then replace with an updated version of the same quality and fit.

Give my secrets a go and pop in-store to let me know how you get on.

Black White Denim is open Monday-Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm and can be found 24/7 online at blackwhitedenim.com 20 Water Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5AA | 01625 528454 |

FOOD

Small Pleasures… Small Pleasures is the latest recipe book to be produced by the At The Kitchen in-house team. Together with Ryan Riley, author and founder of Life Kitchen, we helped create the vision for this stunning cookbook. We are so proud of the teamwork and effort that went into producing it. Small Pleasures is out now and available in bookshops across the UK. Grab yourself a copy and feast your eyes on the delicious dishes and recipes, all designed to maximize flavour, nourish your body and revive your love of food. 1. Pour the dashi stock into a large saucepan, then add the ginger, garlic, chilli and white pepper. Place the pan over a low heat and bring the seasoned stock to a simmer. 2. Leave to simmer for 10 minutes, then add the dried mushrooms, sesame oil, soy sauce and vinegar. Simmer for five minutes more or until the mushrooms are fully rehydrated and soft. Add the broccoli florets and king prawns and continue to simmer gently for 6–8 minutes, until the prawns are pink and cooked through.

Hot & sour prawn broth Restoration and broth go hand in glove, just like hot and sour. This is a powerful bowl of goodness that will instantly lift your spirits. Serves 2 400ml dashi stock 2cm ginger, peeled & finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 long red (Thai) chilli, finely chopped (deseeded for less heat) ½ tsp ground white pepper 6 dried shiitake mushrooms ½ tsp sesame oil 1 tsp light soy sauce 1 tsp rice vinegar or white wine vinegar 1 broccoli head, florets separated 10 large king prawns (shelled) 100g dried vermicelli noodles 2 large eggs A few coriander sprigs, leaves picked Lime wedges, to serve

3. Add the noodles, breaking them up with a wooden spoon, if you like, and then crack in both eggs, stirring them through the broth so that the eggs break up into small pieces. Scatter over the coriander leaves and serve with lime wedges for squeezing on to taste.

Cauliflower & potato coconut curry

Never underestimate the simple, restorative power of a curry. This cauliflower and coconut version sings with fresh flavours for an instant pick-me-up, without detracting from everything that is welcoming and familiar in a bowl of warm curry deliciousness. Serves 2 4 shallots, finely diced 5 garlic cloves 1 lime, zested & quartered 2cm piece of ginger root, peeled 1 long red (Thai) chilli (destemmed), plus optional extra slivers to serve 1 long green (Thai) chilli (destemmed) 1½ tbsp garam masala 1 tbsp medium curry powder 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp ground coriander 1 cinnamon stick (about 10cm long) 1 × 400g tin of full-fat coconut milk 1 large potato, peeled & cut into 2cm pieces 1 cauliflower, florets separated 2 tbsp smooth peanut butter 100g coriander, finely chopped Salt Boiled jasmine rice, to serve 1. Put the shallots, garlic, lime zest, ginger, both chillies, garam masala, curry powder, oil, ground coriander and a sprinkle of salt into a food processor and blitz until completely smooth. Place the mixture into a large saucepan and add the cinnamon stick. Give everything a stir to make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan and then place the pan over

a low heat for about 20 minutes, until the mixture smells sweet and aromatic.

sprinkle over the 2 tablespoons of sugar. Toss to distribute the sugar evenly.

2. Remove the cinnamon stick and then add the coconut milk and about 100ml of water and stir to combine. Add the potato, simmer over a low heat for 20 minutes, then add the cauliflower. Stir well and simmer for another 10 minutes. Finally, stir in the peanut butter and mix well until the sauce is combined. Remove the pan from the heat.

2. In a separate large mixing bowl, combine the vanilla custard, orange zest and rose water and mix well.

3. Stir half the chopped coriander through the curry, then ladle it into bowls and sprinkle with the remaining coriander. Serve with boiled jasmine rice, the lime wedges for squeezing over, and sprinkle with slivers of extra red chilli, if you wish.

3. Lay out the pastry sheet on your work surface and use a dinner plate (about 18cm in diameter) to cut out a large circle from it. Transfer the pastry circle onto a lined baking tray. Discard the pastry trimmings. 4. Spoon 6 tablespoons of the custard mixture on to the pastry base, leaving a 2cm border around the edge. Put the

remaining custard in the fridge. Carefully arrange the apples on top of the custard, starting at the outer edge and working inwards in concentric circles. Gently fold the edges of the pastry over the outermost ring of apple to form a rim. Brush the pastry edges with the egg mixture and sprinkle with the 2 teaspoons of sugar. 5. Bake the galette in the centre of the oven for 25 minutes, until the crust is golden and the apples are soft. Serve the tart warm with the chilled remaining custard.

Apple & rose custard galette A galette is a rustic-style French tart – a pastry case with a sweet or savoury filling and folded in around the edge. It is as simple as it is delicious. In this sweet version, the custard is laced with rose water to bring out the floral tones in the apple. Serves 2-4 3 Pink Lady apples, halved, cored & thinly sliced 1 lemon, juiced 2 tbsp demerara sugar, plus 2 tsp for the crust 250ml vanilla custard Zest of 1 orange ½ tsp rose water 1 × 320g sheet of ready-rolled shortcrust pastry 1 egg, lightly beaten with a dash of whole milk 1. Place the apple slices into a mixing bowl and add the lemon juice. Turn the apple to coat the slices in the juice, then

Bring me sunshine Get mellow with yellow as we head for spring As we emerge butterfly-like from the dark days of winter, it’s time to bring some colour into our lives, and what better hue than mellow yellow? It’s the colour of optimism, happiness, hope and creativity. No wonder it’s associated with the expressionist genius of Vincent Van Gogh and other artists known for their love of colour. Yellow is a bold choice for an interior, admittedly, but don’t wimp out, because it will pay you back with striking style and give you a decidedly sunny outlook on life. This is a colour that looks brilliant in bedrooms and works beautifully as an accent shade for living areas. One bright and beautiful sofa or funky parrot lamp later, and your living space is transformed into somewhere that’s all ready for warmer days ahead.

The Woof Guide to Chester It’s one of the UK’s most historic cities but how is it for dogs? Our intrepid reporter Peppa finds out …

By Janet Reeder | Images Paul Morgans

Chester was founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century AD and is surrounded by red sandstone walls built to keep out marauders. Humans are encouraged to follow in the footsteps of the Romans by walking along them but dogs aren’t. Anyway, this is not really a problem for me. Let’s face it, I’d never be able to see over the top and one wall looks pretty much the same as another.

It was in Chester that I found myself on the frow of a catwalk. Now normally, I wouldn’t have anything to do with cats, but this turned out to be something to do with fashion and while I’m not too keen on wearing clothes, as I have my own luxurious, fluffy fur coat, I do like the company of arty people. I was at the opening of the Oh Design Foundation on Bridge Street, which is a gallery, events space and shop showcasing the design and creativity of the city. The great thing is, it is also dog friendly, so while the humans had a fizzy drink called prosecco, I was able to check out the cool design and receive some cuddles from really nice people.

You can soak up history by visiting The Rows instead. These Medieval walkways are covered arcades, which are totally unique. There’s nothing else like them in the world and therefore, they are really special. But it isn’t all Romans and halftimbered buildings. Brook Street has an ‘alternative’ vibe with its multicultural shops and cool emporia, selling everything from chillis and spices to clothing and vinyl. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at The Botanist, a beautiful, cosy restaurant on Werburgh Street, which is very dog friendly. It is THE place for brunch, cocktails and a quirky menu of classics and Asian delights as well as just hanging out with the fantastic staff. They know how to treat their doggy customers and their human friends.

been coated in polenta and served with a delicious truffle mustard mayo and had a dry texture that made them the perfect sharing dish. Mains included a vegan bang bang noodle salad, which included heaps of crisp vegetables, Asian slaw and meatless nuggets, and ribeye steak and chunky chips – a lovely classic choice from a menu full of invention. Chester has really got a lot to offer the doggy visitor. There are pooch-f riendly hotels, including The Queen, where we stayed. It was close to the station and a stroll away from the centre. Perfect for stretching my doggy legs.

My humans chose a Thai red prawn kebab, which was really good fun to eat with a yummy Thai red curry dip, and crispy mushrooms to start. The mushrooms had

from Andalucía Driving lessons There are many things I love about living in Spain. The weather. The food. The cava. However, driving is def initely not one of them. Take yesterday’s trip to El Palo, for example. First, I had to brave the roundabouts. Pretty straightforward, right? Going left, use the left-hand lane. Going right, use the right-hand-lane. Indicators at the ready. But these rules seem a complete mystery to most Spanish drivers I encounter. There I am in the left-hand lane when a young, perfectly coiffed female driver, ahead to my right, suddenly swerves left, straight into my path. No mirrors. No indicators. Nothing. Cue screeching brakes and an expletiveladen tirade f rom yours truly whilst

the stunning señorita simply drove on, oblivious, not a care in the world. Next, the joys of the A7 motorway or, as I like to call it, The Highway of Death. As usual, having to dodge the tailgating, old, balding, totally loco Spanish speed merchants – talking and texting on their mobiles for all to see. Thankfully, it was only a few junctions until my exit; but as I came off, what do I see but two cars parked up illegally on the exit roundabout. On the actual roundabout! Two fortysomething women, both looking a million dollars, leaning seductively on said cars, repeatedly checking their watches as if they were part of some Hollywood f ilm road heist. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I spy a couple of police cars approaching. Glancing at my clock, I realised it was shift-change time. As is the norm in Spain, both police cars were f illed with ridiculously good-looking officers. Two females. Four males. Tanned. Fit. Gorgeous. Sexy. Think a patrol of Penélope Cruz and Gerard Piqué look-alikes. Suddenly, it all made sense. That’s why I keep seeing glammed-up female Spanish

drivers performing idiotic manoeuvres on roundabouts. That’s why I keep being tailgated on motorways by old Spanish men wildly texting. That’s why I keep seeing cars parked in ridiculous places. It’s not that Spaniards are terrible drivers. Nope. They simply want to get pulled over by the police. And pondering that for a second, I thought to myself … well … if that’s how you get one-on-one time with these Spanish gods, why not? So, screeching to a halt, I parked up behind the glamour pusses. Clearly a major driving infraction. Punishment: hopefully involving handcuffs. Only problem, as soon as Officer Ruiz stepped out of the car, slipped on his Ray-Bans, adjusted his gun belt and swaggered towards me in his f igurehugging police uniform, I completely lost the ability to speak. Instead, I babbled incoherently in some kind of giggly, terrible Spanglish whilst simultaneously trying, and failing dismally, to seductively twirl my hair. And rather than handcuffs, all I received was a pitying pat on my shoulder and instructed to be on my way. As I drove off, humiliated, I glanced back, just in time to see the triumphant smiles on the more experienced Spanish lady drivers’ faces as they excitedly looked forward to their interrogation. Well played, señoras. Well played. Right, must dash. My Spanish friends Mariel and Lidia have agreed to give me lessons. Today: the perfect, big hair, Spanish blow-dry, followed by a tour of the best spots to be pulled over …

Breathe In, Bliss Out: is this Austrian health resort the answer to long COVID?

VIVAMAYR Medical Health Resort Maria Wörth is ready to battle respiratory challenges with a new treatment programme devoted entirely to lung health. We spoke to the expert team to find out more… We started the new year much like we tend to start every new year. Our feet are back under our desks, we’re resetting our routines after a lively festive break, and we’re planning a year of travel to destinations both new and familiar. Now we are firmly in 2024, the crises and chaos of the 2020 pandemic feel a lot like a distant memory. Whilst life looks a lot like those prepandemic days, there is one souvenir from that time that we’d rather not keep: long Covid.

30 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK

In this post-pandemic world, we are more conscious of our respiratory health than ever before. Even when we try to do everything right to keep fit and healthy, the winter brings with it risks to our overall health, with cold, flu and even Covid cases on the rise across the UK this year.

TRAVEL

What is long Covid? Beyond typical issues like asthma and respiratory disease, one ailment causing particular concern is the dreaded ‘long Covid’, which can mean a serious upheaval to daily life for those suffering with symptoms long-term. According to Dr. Werner Zancolo, Head Physician at VIVAMAYR, long Covid symptoms can persist for months - with recent studies suggesting an average persistence of around 15 months. Long Covid is not to be sniffed at. Symptoms can include deep fatigue, shortness of breath, reduced physical strength and ‘brain fog’, which, over the course of several months, can contribute to other challenges, such as low mood and depression. Can it be diagnosed? Whilst at the moment there is no one test that can diagnose long Covid, the common symptoms between patients help to signal a diagnosis. “The good news”, says Dr. Zancolo, “is that, contrary to scepticism surrounding long Covid, most people do recover, but it demands time and patience”.

How is long Covid treated? Treatment for a respiratory condition does not always solely focus on the lungs. At VIVAMAYR, a central aspect to successful recovery lies in addressing ‘silent inflammation’ within the body and treating mitochondrial issues. Dr. Zancolo and his team believe that “mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses, play a crucial role in cell function. By focusing on these elements, patients have reported a quicker return to managing their daily routines and regaining a sense of normalcy”. The health resort’s newly introduced treatment program, Active Breath, is a reaction to the ongoing respiratory issues found in-house with VIVAMAYR’s own patients, as well as a response to the growing demand for serious respiratory healthcare. Upon arrival at the Austrian health resort, every guest begins their treatment with a one-on-one medical consultation with a trained physician. This consultation forms the basis of their personalised treatment plan, which starts with foundational building blocks including clinical exams, dietary consultations and

thorough testing to determine which particular therapies are most vital for each patient. The remainder of the treatment program is then tailored based on those initial findings - the doctor may prescribe breathing exercises, nasal reflex therapy, saline inhalations or any other number of respiratory treatments. How can you improve your respiratory health? There are many small changes that can be made to gradually and incrementally improve respiratory health. Perhaps the easiest change to make is to our daily exercise routines, by ensuring we have a balance of low-intensity and moderate activity - which can be achieved by a simple brisk walk or swim. VIVAMAYR also has an outpost in London. A quick visit to the Day Clinic on Harley Street can act as a stepping stone in the right direction for respiratory care. Dr. Ezgi Kacar, a medical doctor and holistic health coach, takes care of patients looking for medical consultations, laboratory tests and IV infusions. The clinic’s IHHT oxygen therapy is a popular choice for patients seeking respiratory care, often coupled with a mitochondria infusion.

LEGAL

STERLING DE ZUK Providing a fresh, new approach to divorce Sterling de Zuk is a niche, highly skilled legal practice located in prestigious offices in Wilmslow, providing excellence in terms of delivery of expert legal advice and client care but at a reasonable cost

Eye-watering, rip-off monthly bills are a thing of the past with Sterling de Zuk. A quotation is provided for the work that needs to be done so that a client is fully aware of the legal charges. No surprises. Searching for a divorce lawyer is both time-consuming, stressful and tiring. Ensuring you find one that will represent your needs and protect your assets simultaneously can be an arduous task at an emotional and challenging time in your life. Wilmslow-based Mark Thomson was inspired to take matters into his own hands and decided to launch Sterling de Zuk, a new kind of law practice, after feeling frustrated and let down by his own experience of a painful divorce.

32 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK

On a mission to stamp out the atrocious customer service and overly expensive bills that divorce lawyers are renowned for, Sterling de Zuk – with its boutique and tailor-made legal services – offers a refreshingly different experience for individuals looking for a divorce lawyer. “With Sterling de Zuk, we aim to empower clients, not cause more stress in their lives,” explains Mark. “We’re all about helping to secure their financial future and guiding them through this tricky stage of life to a better, happier time. We’re the trusted, powerful voice that people have been looking for when hunting for a divorce lawyer. I am living proof that life can and will get better post-divorce.”

Yes, the experience is hard and many people come out the other end feeling bashed and bruised. In my opinion, it’s the lawyer’s job to help clients through this and make things easier whenever they can.

Sterling de Zuk opened its first offices in Wilmslow in October 2023 and already has plans in place for opening a second in London in early 2024. The growing team of experienced and caring principal lawyers walk with clients every step of the way through the divorce journey to a brighter tomorrow. As Mark found out for himself, all too often divorce lawyers are aggressive and can even be condescending to clients. “The Sterling de Zuk team is on hand to assist our clients through this emotional and distressing time. We lead them through all loops and holes, the confusion and all the difficulties they may experience as they navigate this process. We help them adjust to this stage of their life; get through it stronger and in one piece and come out the other side happier,” Mark continues. Divorce can be complicated, expensive and overwhelming, from the early days of approaching separation and all the issues relating to it. Clients need to know where they stand financially so they can move on. Once a decision is made by a client to divorce or the client may have received a solicitor’s letter, Sterling de Zuk will be quickly on the client’s case to sort matters out as soon as possible at the lowest cost.

Look for a divorce lawyer to support you Looking ahead and starting to put a plan in place is the very first step to a new, happier life. When instructing Sterling de Zuk, a client will immediately sense they are in very good hands and have made the right choice. “In my case and sadly, in the experiences of far too many friends and colleagues, even the tone of voice used in correspondences from divorce lawyers can be aggressive and, at times, upsetting,” reveals Mark.“This can then evoke fear in people and make them feel the need to fight back. There really is no need to work in this manner. Divorce can happen to anyone and when it does, it feels like your life is falling apart around you and you’ll never be happy again. But things will get better and you will laugh again and even have a happy relationship. Yes, the experience is hard and many people come out the other end feeling bashed and bruised. In my opinion, it’s the lawyer’s job to help clients through this and make things easier whenever they can.” Many clients from across Cheshire, including the ‘Golden Triangle’ area of Alderley Edge, Prestbury and Wilmslow, together with Hale, Hale Barns, Bowdon and Bramhall are choosing Sterling de Zuk in their divorce. When contacting Sterling de Zuk, a client will speak to the lawyer who will handle their case from day one. The lawyer will be an experienced principal lawyer and not a junior member of staff. The first meeting is FREE. Following the initial meeting, a case plan is drafted and agreed with the client. It is also costed, so there is full transparency regarding legal fees. All calls or emails are responded to by the end of the working day, even if it is just to book a call in for the following day. A client will never be kept waiting for a response.

He has over 28 years’ experience, including teaching and training surgeons. Raj is also a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons (England), the immediate past-president of the British Rhinological Society and is on the councils of ENT UK, the British Society of Facial Plastic Surgery, The Royal Society of Medicine, The British Skull Base Society and the Confederation of European Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. What is snoring and what causes it? Snoring occurs when the flow of air to our throat is obstructed during sleep, causing our throat tissue to vibrate. This happens due to relaxed throat muscles, narrowed airways and blocked or partially blocked nasal passages. When we sleep, these factors lead to partial obstruction, creating the sound we know as snoring. Being overweight, drinking alcohol before bed or a stuffy nose can make snoring worse. Why do some people snore more than others? People snore for different reasons. It could

be temporary due to a blocked nose or it could be anatomical due to large tonsils, the way their throat is shaped or a deviated septum, which causes difficulty in breathing through the nose, for example.

For anatomical issues like enlarged tonsils or a deviated septum, surgery may be recommended. Laser-assisted procedures can also help to reshape tissues and reduce snoring.

How can snoring be treated? Treatment will vary depending on the underlying cause. Lifestyle changes – such as weight loss, avoiding alcohol before bed, sleeping on your side or changing your sleep position, can make a big difference in many cases. Some people find that wearing a special mouthpiece to keep their airways open can help.

Consulting an ear, nose and throat specialist for an accurate diagnosis is essential. Treatments can be tailored to your individual needs, aiming to improve your sleep quality by reducing or stopping snoring. Call 01625 545 000.

How much and what should I drink to be healthy? This is an important topic and clearly very relevant to your overall health and potentially your urological symptoms. In addition, there is a great deal of false information circulating regarding what is recommended for fluid intake.

So, how much water do I actually need per day? Your basic fluid requirement per day is only about 1.2-1.5 litres (plus water you get from food intake). That’s about six to eight glasses of water. That doesn’t sound like very much – is that healthy? That is just your basal requirement – if it is a hot day or you are exercising, for example, you will lose more fluid through sweating and will need to drink more.

know that people who have had kidney stones should drink more – we want them to produce about two litres of urine per day. In practice, that means drinking about 2.5 litres of water. Some illnesses can also cause dehydration in themselves, such as diabetes, and in this case, you should be aiming to increase intake to take account of increased fluid losses in urine. In other illnesses also, such as if you are running a high temperature from flu, you should also increase your water intake.

Mr J. Graham Young, Consultant Urological Surgeon

What should I drink? The perfect drink is probably water – that makes sense as that is what we evolved to drink long before we had fruit juices, fizzy drinks, tea, coffee and the rest! Water has zero calories as well! For kidney stone formers, there may be some benefit from adding in fluids rich in citrate, such as lemon juice, to water. Citrate can act as an inhibitor of stone formation. However, take advice from your doctor first about this. Is there anything I shouldn’t drink? The upper limit for alcohol consumption has decreased recently – for adults this is now only 14 units per week. Alcohol also has the effect of actually causing dehydration – most of us have the experience of a very dry mouth the morning after drinking too much! That’s because ethanol itself makes your kidneys excrete more water than they should. Another drink that you should be aware can be potentially harmful is grapefruit juice, because grapefruit can interfere with metabolism of a number of common drugs, including many of the drugs used to thin your blood after a heart attack, as well as statin drugs to lower cholesterol. For a full list, check www.nhs.uk/commonhealth-questions/medicines/does-grapefruit-affect-my-medicine. Ask your doctor if you are in any doubt.

Are there any other people who should drink more than that? Pregnant and breastfeeding women will need more-about 300ml in pregnancy and about 700ml when breastfeeding. How about in some illnesses? The evidence on fluid intake and illnesses isn’t very strong – except for people who have had problems with kidney stones. We

What happens if I drink more? In normal healthy individuals, your kidneys will simply compensate by increasing the amount of urine you produce. Occasionally, for some people this can be a problem if they have got into a habit of drinking several litres per day for alleged health reasons and find they have to empty their bladder more often than is convenient!

Education News Well done to all of the pupils from The Manchester Grammar School who sat The British Mathematical Olympiad and received awards. three and a half hours and generally consists of six questions, each worth 10 marks.

Qualification for this competition involved achieving in the top 1,000 out of 100,000+ entries nationally, so this is an impressive achievement for these pupils. Initially, pupils sat the Senior Mathematical Challenge paper to gain qualification for the first round of The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO1). The BMO1 paper lasts

A special mention should go to year 12 pupil Hercules, who was awarded distinction, a bronze medal and has been invited to the second round of The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO2). Hercules spoke about his experiences: “I achieved 48/60 in the British Maths Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1) this year, which is a significant improvement over my performance last year, placing me in the top 100 in the country and qualifying me to Round 2. Despite having done very little formal training in Mathematical Olympiads in the past, I was pleased with my performance. I had spent a considerable amount of time self-studying common Olympiad techniques and doing past paper questions. I am also very grateful for the support of the maths department, especially from Dr Graham, Mr McMillan and Mrs Allinson. Hopefully, I can similarly improve on my BMO Round 2 performance last year and I hope to fully solve at least one question (due to the high difficulty and niche nature of the questions).”

Year 13 pupils Henry and Nathaniel were also awarded distinctions. Only the top 26% get awarded a distinction, so this puts Hercules, Henry and Nathaniel in the top 250 pupils nationally. Four pupils were awarded merit and three pupils were awarded qualification also. Well done everyone for your hard work!

Ask the Expert Maria Kemp Maria Kemp, headteacher at St. Bede's College, Alexandra Road South, is excited to lead the school towards its 150th year. With extensive experience in both primary and secondary education in Oxford, London and Madrid, Maria sits on the board of the International Federation of Family Development, which offers parenting courses in over 60 countries and has General Consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

How can parents help their children achieve successful results without damaging their relationship? I would recommend parents to remind themselves that their family is unique. As parents, our children need to know that we are their stronghold. Our children may interpret our desire to create as many wonderful future possibilities for them as a desire to control them or impose our life choices on them. It is essential that our children understand that our concern comes from unconditional love and a steadfast belief in them. In exam revision

periods, when stress rises, it is important to agree on a timetable and to differentiate between incentives and treats. If we give them something promised before they achieve their goal, the message we are giving is that perhaps we don’t expect them to reach the goal. If we feel that they are losing confidence, a small treat can put them back on track. Can our children be free and committed to their responsibilities at the same time?

interior freedom. No matter what life throws at us, we can always own our responses. How we act and react depends only on our moral, emotional and intellectual strength. True freedom is the capacity to love. Growing strength in these three areas in a balanced manner, through good habits, will enable our children to realise that fulfilling responsibilities only increases their freedom, opening future possibilities.

Our challenge as parents and educators is to help our children grow with true

Chris Randell Chris Randell has been the principal at Abbey College Manchester since January 2022. The college, which is part of the Abbey DLD Group of Colleges, is a thriving independent college in the heart of Manchester city centre, with a fast-growing and vibrant community of students aged 15-21 from the UK and all around the world.

Why should students consider a dedicated sixth form college? Sixth form colleges are organised to offer the support systems and culture that enable teachers to guide students. They are experts in understanding the needs of older teenagers and the issues they face. Teachers and students work to achieve academic success together and this creates well-rounded students who excel academically and develop their emotional, interpersonal and social skills.

How do colleges prepare students for university life? Students have a greater element of supervised freedom than at a school, so preparing them for the independent lifestyle they will meet at university. At Abbey College Manchester, the diverse mix gives students a truly global outlook and establishes a lifelong international friendship network. This is also good preparation for the international environment at top universities and something that our alumni do say helped them settle quickly into their university studies.

Is it an advantage being based in the city centre? Being situated in the heart of a youthful, diverse and energetic city bursting with character offers many opportunities for students. As well as being within easy walking distance of the main public transport stations, students enjoy the cultural, educational and business opportunities afforded by learning in the city centre. There are a range of valuable learning resources on the doorstep, such as libraries, museums, theatres, galleries and sports facilities.

EDUCATION

Manchester High School for Girls turns 150 In 1874, the people of Manchester – leading figures in the academic, cultural and business life of the city – founded the first academic school for girls in the north of England. It was a time when many regarded the education of girls as unnecessary or undesirable. Yet, Manchester High School for Girls’ (MHSG) founders knew that society would be better for this investment. Their aims were to ‘impart to the girls the very best education which can be given and fit them for any future before them’ and, after 150 years, MHSG has built quite a legacy. Having outgrown two of their original school sites, the school’s third and final home on Grangethorpe Road was bombed during an air raid in 1940. Yet, positive change grew out of this setback. Throughout Manchester High School’s 150year journey, the school has focused on creating a place where talented girls of any faith and background can flourish. The school’s alumnae include all three of renowned suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst’s

daughters, BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour host Emma Barnett, former BBC Two dragon Jenny Campbell and Kotska Wallace, principal engineer of the European Space Agency. The school celebrated its 150th birthday on Friday 19th January 2024 with a stunning showcase of musical and dance performances, historical archive content and thanksgiving at The Bridgewater Hall. In the afternoon, the school’s current and former staff, as well as alumnae, came together to enjoy a celebratory lunch in MHSG’s historic main hall. That evening, the school hosted an impressive fundraising launch event, featuring a panel discussion of former MHSG bursary students, guest speaker and former BBC Two dragon and MHSG alumna Jenny Campbell, and the grand opening of the school’s brand-new Learning Enhancement and Wellbeing Hub. The school’s girls are conf ident and passionate, ambitious and curious. They have a love of life, a caring spirit and a drive to play a positive role in the world around them.

To ensure that MHSG can continue to encourage girls of the future to become these agents of change, the school is continuing to invest in its diverse student community through bursaries as well as investing in pioneering, innovative and dynamic learning experiences. With a strong focus on student wellbeing, as well as exceptional academic attainment, the school is committed to improving its wellbeing offering, with new spaces for reflection and a new social hub at the heart of the school. MHSG has always been committed to supporting talented girls from across the region with means-tested bursaries, awarded on academic merit, which in turn contribute to driving an atmosphere of aspiration and academic achievement. The school has set an ambitious target to raise vital funds across its 150th birthday year and is hosting a myriad of one-time celebratory events as part of its calendar to mark such a momentous occasion.

If you would like to find out more information about investing in MHSG’s pupils and their future, or attending any of their 150th birthday events, please visit manchesterhigh.co.uk, call 0161 224 0447 or find MHSG on social media @manhighgirls

King’s Head, Jason Slack

Happy children make good learners The idea that ‘Happy children make good learners’ is a major factor behind academic success, according to The King's School Head, Jason Slack. The 521-year-old school recorded its highest ever position in the influential Sunday Times’ Parent Power guide, coming in fourth out of all the independent secondary schools across the North West. King's jumped up f rom seventh after bucking the national trend in this summer's GCSE and A-levels. At GCSE, 43% of all grades were at A*, up from 40% the previous year. At A-level, a third of students achieved at least one A*, with the same number gaining at least three As – all achieved despite more rigorous external assessment and higher grade boundaries post-Covid.

Mr Slack, who took over the headship four years ago, was the first to say: "There is so much more to a school than any league table position, but nonetheless, this is a very pleasing outcome."

"It's not just about giving the children facts and expecting them to absorb that knowledge but enabling them to discover and explore knowledge for themselves by prompting and guiding them."

He added: "We have very strong teaching with very well-qualified and experienced teachers making sure the children learn what they need to know. More than that, we continually emphasise the broader skills, enabling children to take responsibility for their own learning.

In conclusion, he said: "However, most importantly, a key mantra at King's is creating community spirit and ensuring the children are happy. We aim to ensure that whatever sparks and motivates a child's interest is fed inside and outside the classroom. It's a complete package, because we know happy children make good learners."

"We were the first school nationwide to gain the Learning Quality Framework's Gold Standard, which underlines using creative and innovative methods of teaching to make sure children better understand and remember knowledge.

Petra shortlisted for national netball awards Petra Critchley, a year 7 pupil at Bolton School Girls' Division), has been shortlisted for two national netball awards – ENG Junior and Netball Player of the Year Awards 2023. Petra plays goal attack or goal shooter for Kingsway Power Netball Club, Manchester Thunder, Lancashire County Netball and Bolton School. Petra has had a particularly strong 2023. In June, she helped the U11 Kingsway Power Netball Club become national champions at a tournament in Essex. She was awarded Player of the Tournament for her team and then overall Player of the Tournament, having scored 48 goals. Petra's school netball coach, Miss Andrea Donaghy, said: “Petra is an incredibly versatile and talented netball player and since September, she has been a fantastic addition to the year 7 squad. She leads by example and constantly encourages her peers during PE lessons and squad practices. We are looking forward to seeing how her netball journey progresses over the next few years and we wish her the best of

luck in the ENG Junior Netball Player of the Year Awards 2023.”

she was also a fantastic team player and a real sportswoman.”

Her former Bolton School Junior Girls’ netball coach, Mrs Julia Marsden, also heaped praise on her: “From the moment Petra stepped into Bolton School, it was evident that her dedication and natural athleticism set her apart. Petra possessed an innate ability to grasp techniques with remarkable ease, turning every netball session into a showcase of her prowess. What truly set her apart, however, was her unwavering commitment to improvement. Petra approached every lesson with a hunger for knowledge and an eagerness to refine her skills. As her coach, witnessing her evolve into a seasoned and accomplished netballer was not only professionally fulfilling but also a testament to the incredible results that passion and hard work can yield.”

Petra first started playing netball in 2017 at age six, inspired by her elder sister Pippa's passion for the sport. Now, at the age of 12 years, she trains an intense six days per week between her school team, Kingsway Power, Lancashire U13s' Netball and Manchester Thunder. Most of her weekends are taken up with matches across these various teams.

Mrs Carol Laverick, her former headteacher at Junior Girls, agreed: “Petra was very talented and very dedicated. I recall at one point she had to shoot 200 goals per day and she would video herself doing this as proof that she had done it! What’s more,

Petra’s ambitious long-term goal is to someday represent the England netball team, hopefully by the time netball joins the Olympic line-up!

Petra’s mother, Rachel Critchley, said: “As parents, we could not be prouder of how focused and driven she is to achieve excellence in her chosen sport of netball. Petra balances her athletic commitments incredibly well alongside academic work and pours absolute dedication into every match.”

NEXT STEPS Materials science is a branch of tech that’s moving almost as fast as the digital world – ask anyone that used to do sport in canvas pumps and woollen shorts. Now every front row in every fashion week is still dominated by trainers that look like computer game spacecraft, out here in the real world, we’re benefiting from better comfort, performance, waterproofing and plenty more clever innovations. Here’s a round-up of the latest...

Best for hikers: Hanwag Blueridge ES

Best for natural fit: Vivobarefoot

The tech challenge for makers of walking boots is simply to get the balance right. They have to be comfortable, supportive, durable, breathable, grippy and so on. Hanwag has managed to nail all of these with the Blueridge, but what’s truly impressive is that they’ve managed to make them lightweight too. With decent eco credentials, these boots are constructed from a mix of recycled and recyclable materials, including Eco-Shell lining, Terragrip outsoles and Perwanger suede. With stylish modern styling and a comfortable mid-height cut, these are the most desirable hiking boots of the current crop. £185, Hanwag.com

Another new shoe manufacturer that’s changing the game with new innovations and technologies is Vivobarefoot, founded by two members of the legendary Clarks shoemaking family with some serious science behind them. They argue that their wider toe boxes and thin, flexible soles mimic a more natural way of walking and running and in the long run, improve foot strength and resistance to injury. They’re even promising a future evolution of foot scanners that can 3D-print a personalised fit for every customer. We predict big things. Vivobarefoot.com

Best for eco-athletes: Salomon INDEX.03 Salomon’s INDEX concept changed the world of sports footwear with a truly world-first revolution in sustainable manufacturing. Most trainers are notoriously difficult to recycle as the materials are so hard to separate, so worn-out athletic shoes usually end up in landfill. Not these ones. INDEX.03 takes both the sustainable mission and running performance very seriously. Designed to be disassembled and reinjected into a second life in ski boots, the upper construction optimises material consumption and uses undyed fabrics for a reduced footprint. Infinifoam brings plush, recyclable comfort underfoot. I can confirm that they’re supremely comfy, look as cool as you’d expect from the brand of the moment and, at £150, are pleasingly less expensive than previous generations. FUN ON FOoT At the time of writing, I can’t stop thinking about walking and running

It’s New Year resolution season, the weather is beautifully cold, crisp and bright and I’m excited to put some new ultra-high-tech running shoes from Salomon and some lightweight hiking boots from Hanwag to the test (see Tech page on the left). Strapping on some fresh footwear and heading out on your own two feet is a refreshingly pure and simple way to cleanse the mind, body and soul. Here are some ideas that will hopefully inspire others to get out there and do it too. Looking into running clubs, I came across a group in Central Manchester called One Foot Forward, run by my friend’s brewery, Track. I met with the group that runs a slow and steady social 5k from the brewery’s taproom and was delighted to see how enormous the group was – full of runners of all shapes, sizes and abilities, all chatting and enjoying some fresh air and exercise together. They run a safe and scenic route taking in Manchester’s canal network and no runner is left behind.

By Oliver Chesher

Meanwhile, for those that perhaps prefer less pace and/or more distance, I wanted to find a walking option that showcases the North West at its best in the depths of winter. The Peak District village of Chelmorton is a relatively short hop ‘over the tops’ as you head east out of Macclesfield and past Buxton and offers some great winter walking loops. As the season strips back the vegetation, this part of the region can still offer a sightseeing feast with some fascinating historic landmarks, from the famous criss-cross of drystone walls to ancient burial chambers, relics of the industrial past, and even sites of legendary ghost stories. All these walks, of course, end in a village pub with a roaring fire, a quite appropriate way to round off the day.

MOTORING

END OF AN ERA

Electric motoring is continuing to take over (which is no bad thing), meaning that some iconic cars are destined to ascend to collector/classic status as they inevitably come to the end of their production thanks to the phasing-out of internal combustion. These future classics won’t disappear overnight, but if you want a brand-new one, then time is ticking. We asked the experts at car leasing comparison site Leasing.com to give us a rundown of which celebrated models are scheduled to disappear in 2024 as manufacturers replace them with their electric and plug-in successors. The list is long and includes some gigantic names. Strap in… First, we see not only the Volvo V90 but the entire range of Volvo estate and saloon cars leaving the UK market. Although the estate car has been synonymous with Volvo for generations, it’s time to accept that everyone wants an SUV nowadays.

Next up is the much-loved Ford Fiesta, the small hatchback that has been a bestseller for 47 years but has to make room for the upcoming all-electric replacement. While we’re on the subject of the American car makers, Jeep and Dodge are also ringing the changes with the discontinuation of the Cherokee and the Charger respectively. But again, the news isn’t bad as there are likely to be electric equivalents coming down the line, while the originals will make a healthy second-hand market. Perhaps my pick of the bunch taking their final lap has to be Audi’s supercar, the R8, and most notable of all is the sports car that became an instant classic when it debuted in the 90s, the TT. From the ’95 Frankfurt Motor Show to the 2024 Final Edition, every generation of the TT is instantly recognisable and will be sorely missed. All things must end and car technology never stands still, but one thing’s for sure: 2024 is going to be a turning point in motoring history.

Fact file / Audi TT Final Edition / Engine: 2.0 litre TFSI Power: 320PS / Seats: 2 / Euro NCAP safety rating: 5 stars Price: from £41,910
