Soul II Soul

Soul II Soul are bringing their FEEL FREE tour to Stockport Plaza at 8pm on 10th November. The legendary British R’n’B group will be performing hits from their back catalogue, which includes songs from the iconic debut album Club Classics Vol. One.

Soul II Soul have won two Grammy Awards, sold over 10 million albums in more than 35 territories and frontman Jazzie B's versatile production contributions graced over 35 million albums across 100 territories through collaborations with James Brown, Sinead O'Connor, Nas and Destiny's Child. The band have commanded stages in over 20 countries, receiving numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards, three Soul Train Awards, and honours from the NAACP. Their timeless music remains relevant, has featured in high-profile advertisements and been covered by renowned artists like Mary J. Blige, Kanye West and Sean Kingston.

With chart-topping hits like Keep On Movin' and Back to Life, Soul II Soul became household names. Evolving from a sound system DJ collective into a remarkable 25-piece band, they have captivated audiences across the globe and this autumn, will be playing a small run of UK shows as part of their FEEL FREE tour.

Soul II Soul emerged from the vibrant UK sound system culture, epitomising determination, resourcefulness and an unwavering passion for music. Their journey began in the multicultural melting pot of London, where people from diverse backgrounds grew up together and celebrated their shared experiences and influences. It was in the mid-1980s, against the backdrop of the underground warehouse scene, that Soul II Soul's creative expression truly flourished.

With their innovative sound system, they transformed ordinary house parties into extraordinary and immersive experiences through unconventional speakers, pyrotechnics, banners and strobes. The unique Funki Dred style they embraced attracted a devoted following of music enthusiasts, spreading their fame far and wide.

The release of the seminal album Club Classics Vol. One was a pivotal moment, catapulting Soul II Soul to worldwide

success, unleashing their creativity and distinctly British sound, which transcended boundaries with its fresh, infectious and soulful embrace.

These shows are set to celebrate their remarkable journey and continuing innovation in music.

On the razzle dazzle!

There are no rules in fashion, especially when it comes to what is appropriate for day or evening dressing. I mean, what’s the point of splurging on a gorgeous skirt or gown if you are only going to wear them a couple of times, if that?

With the festive season rapidly approaching, it is time to hunt out that little number that will make you shine. I have included on this page a couple of pieces that are so special, you’ll really only want to bring them out of the closet for the most glamorous of occasions, but the rest you can wear whenever you like.

Sequins are so on-trend right now, so if you haven’t already got a sequin skirt or dress in your wardrobe, get one right now, but don’t think you have to keep them for parties.

A sequin skirt can be worn with a big slouchy jumper and trainers for daytime and then dressed up with a white shirt or figure-hugging top and heels for night.

I love satin skirts and tops too, as they are brilliant for adding a touch of luxury to both your daytime and evening wardrobe. Team a satin skirt with a fur jacket and chunky boots for day and high-heel ankle boots and a sequinned top for night. Add a huge cocktail ring and statement earrings; a shimmery eye colour or nail, and voila! You’re sorted!

Honestly, wearing your eveningwear for daytime is a fantastic way to justify the expense – and help you to sparkle all the way to the party season too. It’s got to be a win-win!

Forged in fire and turned by hand, Buunt’s unique beauty stands apart in a world of mass production

Unique

Unique. The only one of its kind. A bit like us, really. And who doesn’t think of themselves as ‘unique’? Of course, we may think we’re different from one another, but it’s hard to stand out from the crowd in this digital world of AI machine replication. Even the rarefied world of luxury isn’t immune to this dependence on machines to make something they may say is unique but really isn’t. And price alone is no indicator or guarantee of precious individuality.

No. To find a state of independence, you have to hunt high and low. After all, there’s a reason why the rare and precious is exactly that: rare and precious. Buunt Jewellery, whose philosophy is that unique and precious beauty in the world of fine jewellery and jeweled gifts can only ever be created by hand, produces both the rare and the precious. Its stunning jewellery and jeweled gifts, from pendants to jeweled shaving razors, are made by hand; the hands of expert and experienced crafters who, by the very nature of their work, can only ever create unique pieces.

14 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Creative non-conformity… and art for art’s sake

Vitaliy Astakhov, founder of Buunt, certainly knows all about forging individuality through creativity. A life influenced by both his own creativity and the inspiration of others, too, and a determination to live an independent life; a life that certainly makes him stand out in any crowd!

Growing up in Soviet-era Ukraine, where individuality was actively discouraged and any expression of creativity could only be channeled in aid of the state, he was inspired to kick against the system; a system that now appears, in hindsight, to have been the very definition of ‘mass production’. And, of course, as history has proven again and again, the human need for individualism will always triumph over any attempts to herd us into an anonymous mass.

As a child, he lived with his grandfather, who inspired his striving for expression of the self. He was a famous Ukrainian artist who, though ostensibly working for the state, as all artists had to, also created his own individual art within the privacy of his own home – which was both illegal and dangerous, not to mention challenging, as the tools needed for these creative endeavours weren’t readily available for home use. And so, his creativity extended to even making his own power tools and turning lathes; again, all abso lutely forbidden and dangerous if he were to be found out. But he was determined to express himself as he wanted; a lesson Vitaliy learned and continues to expand to this day.

A life led by creative independence

And just as his grandfather refused to allow his vital creative spark to be dulled by an autocratic authority that demanded everyone be the same, Vitaliy has followed his creative heart and independent mind. From a career in banking, which saw him start successful investment opportunities in many parts of the world, to his obsession with marrying sound investment acumen with a genius for beautiful creativity, Buunt is his answer for those looking to make both a beautiful ‘statement’ and a fireproof investment.

Mokume-gane

Nowhere is this more apparent than in his adoption of the tradi tional Japanese metalworking practice of ‘mokume-gane’, which involves laying and overlaying, by hand, various precious metals to produce a kind of sandwich-like laminate, known as a ‘billet’. The end result has a distinctively wood grain appearance, which, of course, just as in nature, is always unique. Though it dates back to 17th–century Japan, mokume-gane had largely fallen into obscurity by the middle of the last century. Not entirely coincidental with the rise in mass-produced and machine-made products, including jewellery. But now, thanks to Buunt, this beautifully intricate art is once again available for us to appreciate.

Stamp your independence… and hallmark your investment

This rare fusing of precious metals and gemstones with heat and hand that produces a billet with several different levels of ‘fineness’ of the constituent precious metals, which determine what ‘hallmark’ jewellery and jewelled gifts should carry, has even chal lenged the national agency responsible for measuring and marking the value of precious metals and gemstones. In much the same way as a fingerprint or an iris is unique, and the tech nology required to measure those two unique DNA markers took some time to catch up with the idea of using them for iden tification, Buunt’s mokume-gane pieces’ own intricate and unique DNA is prompting the Birmingham Assay Office to update its practices.

Stand out from the crowd. Assuredly…

Which is, after all, reassuring when making a decision to choose either this or that beautiful object of desire. Very few, though, can fully reassure us, as Buunt does, that individualism through beauty is available. And its pieces are, in the truest sense of the word, unique. Which means that when you wear or use one of its beautiful works of art, you are the only person in the world with that object in your hand or on your body. The only one. You are one of a kind. And what price would you put on that?

5 trends we’re backing for Autumn/Winter ‘23

Social media, fashion magazines, style supplements, tik tok videos: we’re constantly being bombarded with opinions about what is “in’ or “trending” each season.

At BWD we buy 6 months in advance so we are well placed to know what will work and what won’t, what will be a one season wonder and what will be a lasting investment. Here are 5 wearable trends we’ll be backing this year.

Urban Utility

Combat pants are here to stay. Keep them relaxed on the waist, don’t go too heavy on the side patch pockets (they can make you look bigger than you are), pair with a fitted top to balance out the silhouette and finish with your favourite chunky trainer.

Power Play

The suit is everything. Oversized and masculine or tailored and feminine, a co-ordinating 2-piece will soon become your best friend for a casual lunch with the girls or a dinner date with your partner. Go for a super strong shoulder, sleeves long enough to be rolled up to show your delicate wrists and arm candy and choose pants with side pockets for nonchalant posing opportunities.

Laidback Luxe

Slinky satins and silks, cosy cashmere and chenille, snuggly sweaters and socks: it’s all about putting luxury back into lounging this winter. Invest in the best you can afford, it’ll be worth it, and mix your top tier textures for maximum polish and pleasure.

beanie hats and Diadora Heritage trainers are the vibe here. Think under-grad student with a hint of hip-hop thrown in and you’ll be bang on!

90’s Nostalgia

Straight-legged cropped jeans, sloganprint sweatshirts, co-ordinating socks,

Cosily Cool

After years of the hoodie and sweatshirt taking precedence over our classic winter warmer, be under no illusion that this year the woolly jumper is BACK. Skinny, slouchy, cropped or oversized, any shape goes. Choose your composition carefully to avoid pilling and always wash with kid gloves. No-one wants to shrink a brand new knit do they?

Élan LASER CLINICS

SQT Bio Microneedling

As an editor, I get to do lots of lovely things, but my favourite, by far, must be trying out new beauty treatments. So, when I was asked to try out this new microneedling treatment at the Élan Laser Clinic in Hale Barns, without the needles, how could I refuse.

NO MACHINES. NO ACIDS. NO SKIN BREAKAGE Sponge spicules are a kind of siliceous bio microneedle, which are extracted from the freshwater sponge. They can stimulate the dermis of the skin and start skin surface microcirculation. They effectively deliver active ingredients to the dermis layer of skin while also activating the basal skin cells. They can be seen as powder to the naked eye and as a sharp rod crystal under the microscope. In just five minutes, 3-5000,000 natural siliceous microneedles are directly introduced into the dermis layer through hand massage.

No bleeding, no anaesthetic and no skin breakage.

SQT Bio Microneedling shortens the skin cycle from 28 days to seven days and achieves natural, safe and effective physical rejuvenation. This can be used for the treatment of pigmentation and melasma / sun damage / oily skin and large pores / skin redness and textural issue / acne scarring / active acne and congestion / fine lines and wrinkles / uneven skin tone and appearance / dandruff / sun spots / improvements of P. acne bacteria / lifting, firming and collagen stimulation.

After cleansing my skin, serum was dotted around my face, then massaged in circular motions into my skin. After a while, it felt like tiny pieces of glass going into the skin. Not unpleasant at all, but you feel something is happening. This was repeated and then a mask applied to calm and soothe the skin. After the treatment, my face looked livelier, it definitely woke up. Hours later, I was positively glowing.

There are several types of treatment available, but I went for anti-ageing. It’s recommended that you have three treatments, so I will be back to complete my course.

MOODY HUES

Bring sexy back home with a treasure trove of jewel-like colours

If you treasure your home, then why not fill it with gold, bronze and jewel-like hues this season? There’s nothing more inviting and, dare we say, sexy than the glitter of metallics against deep reds and greens when it comes to winter interiors.

Even if you have a minimalist decor scheme, now is the time to inject some warmth, colour and dazzle with well-chosen accessories and furniture.

Emerald greens and ruby reds for soft furnishings are not only classic, but they also look more expensive, especially under the moody lighting of a dark winter night. Sure, pale neutrals will add more light, but they can also seem colder, while darker hues are more about injecting grown-up glamour into a room. Adding a touch of gold, bronze or silver – whether in the form of accessories or furnishings – will really bring everything together and add to the luxe feel that’s so on-trend right now.

St Ann’s Hospice reveals stunning plans for their garden and surrounding landscape at new hospice in Heald Green

St Ann’s Hospice’s Build It Together campaign is nearing the final total needed for their new hospice building.

Central to the design are plans for beautiful gardens, which take full advantage of the mature trees already on the land and allow patients access to private terraces.

PRP, an architectural practice with offices in Manchester (as well as Surrey and London), has been working with St Ann’s to create this wonderful new hospice and its landscape architects have been part of the process from the beginning.

PRP’s Mario Gerace and Angeli Ganoo-Fletcher are the landscape architects designing the garden at the new hospice in Heald Green.

Angeli says: “We are thrilled to have been involved in the landscape design at Heald Green. We have worked hard in ensuring that the landscape design provides moments of joy to the patients at the

new hospice. The new design takes on board the existing land scape and creates a special place that’s deeply anchored in our commitment to creating biodiverse, people-friendly designs.”

The new site will be split into three sections by mature trees, all of which are subject to Tree Preservation Orders by virtue of their historic significance within the Cheadle Royal Conservation Area. PRP and St Ann’s have worked closely together to ensure there has been a great deal of ecological work to protect the birds and wildlife in the area.

The proposed development retains all but three of the existing trees, with the building and gardens making best use of the ready-made landscaping while remaining sensitive to the heritage of the surrounding conservation area.

28 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK

The new hospice building will contain a linking corridor connecting the building’s two wings, these consisting of the inpatient unit and the Being You Centre offering day care support.

With the linking corridor crossing beneath the trees and giving continuous views out over the landscaped gardens, this space is as much a place to stop for a moments peace as it is to travel between buildings.

The new hospice building will contain 21 single patient rooms and two three-bed bays. Each room will have double doors opening out to an outdoor terrace and beyond into the landscaped gardens, which include courtyards and sensory planting.

Several rooms with individual terraces, which enable patients to spend private time outside, is an aspect PRP and St Ann’s especially wanted as part of the new site.

Hayley Beswick, ward sister at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “The layout of the current hospice makes it almost impossible to move pa tients outside for some fresh air in the garden.

“I can’t wait for our patients to have their own rooms in the new hospice, complete with air conditioning and patio doors that open directly into a big, beautiful garden. It will let them spend precious moments with loved ones in privacy rather than behind a curtain in a room filled with other patients and their families.”

Hi, I'm Sally, one of the private GPs at The Wilmslow Hospital in Cheshire. Having been a GP for many years, I'd like to share some of my insights on how to make your GP appointments as productive, comfortable, and beneficial for you as possible.

I enjoy regular exercise, however, around my period, I often feel too exhausted –why is this and how can I counteract it?

Getting to know your body around your menstrual cycle is really important for every active female. Using a tracker can help you to recognise the symptoms – the good news is, this can also help you to op timise training through your whole cycle. Menstrual cycle symptoms are very individual. For some people, premenstrual symptoms can show as fatigue, as in your case, and for others, increased bloating or achiness in the joints.

For your fatigue symptoms, it can help to modify activity that week. Add in exercise that is lower impact but beneficial for your recovery, such as yoga or Pilates –movement will help, even if you feel tired. Make sure you get good-quality sleep and hydration and try to have good fats and complex carbohydrates in your diet during this phase especially. You can undertake intense exercise, but focus more around lower intensity endurance (which can be optimal in this phase) than top-speed, high-intensity work.

I suffer from knee osteoarthritis but don't want surgery, if possible. What are the alternative options?

There are a number of options, including Arthrosamid®, which is a safe, singledose, non-biodegradable hydrogel that is injected into the knee to cushion the joint without surgery. Unlike other treatments, it increases lubrication to provide cushioning, which relieves pain and soreness, improving a patient’s quality of life. Key benefits include; only one injection required; sustained pain relief; and improved flexibility and movement.

At the OrthTeam Centre, you will have an initial consultation with one of our knee surgeons, where you will be assessed to determine your suitability for the treatment. If Arthrosamid® is recommended, the procedure will be undertaken by one of our musculoskeletal health radiologists. It is an outpatient treatment that takes 20 to 30 minutes.

I work from home a lot on my laptop and have started to experience a sore, stiff shoulder, could this be frozen shoulder?

The short answer is yes, it could, but there are other causes that need to be excluded.

Frozen shoulder typically causes severe pain initially, followed by loss of shoulder movements, particularly rotating the arm or lifting it away from the body. This can result in difficulty with simple activities, like putting your arm behind your back or doing your hair. It's a painful and unpleasant condition but, thankfully, easily treatable, usually with a guided injection to the shoulder.

There are other conditions, such as shoulder arthritis or calcific tendonitis, that can mimic frozen shoulder, so an examination and investigations, such as X-rays, are needed to be sure of the dia gnosis.

The Private GP & Night Doctor Service

We are a group of experienced GPs based in South Manchester, we offer the highest level of medical care, above and beyond the NHS. Whilst the NHS is a good system, demand has increased so much that it has become almost impossible for it to offer the prompt and personal care that we all wish for.

We believe our registered patients want a professional service with peace of mind at all times – from prompt telephone advice, a face to face consultation or organising an admission into hospital, anytime, day or night – all provided by a small group of doctors whom they know.

Hopefully, you will not need to see a doctor urgently, but accidents or illnesses can occur when least expected, and having to travel or wait several hours for healthcare can only make the ordeal worse.

You can stay registered with your NHS GP, as our aim is not to replace your care but to work alongside it, providing you with our extra medical care when you or your family need it most.

Overactive bladder: When you gotta go!

is no one-off cure. Treatment starts with lifestyle modification, including bladder retraining exercises and dietary changes e.g., avoiding caffeine and alcohol. Tablet treatment generally works to relax the bladder muscle and stop it from contracting at the wrong times. They can be very effective but do have side effects, including a dry mouth and eyes.

I have tried tablets, what next?

If symptoms persist and are very bothersome, you may require further investigations of your bladder. You are then likely to be offered Botox injections.

What is Botox?

What is an overactive bladder?

One of the primary functions of the bladder is to store urine. An overactive bladder (OAB) is not a disease but rather a combination of bothersome symptoms related to the storage of urine. These in clude having to pass urine very often (frequency); the need to rush to the toilet (urgency); passing urine multiple times at night (nocturia); and sometimes, wetting yourself (incontinence).

Who gets it and what is the cause?

OAB is found in both men and women but more commonly in women. Normally, the bladder is relaxed as it fills; however, in an overactive bladder, the nerve signals with the brain are not in sync and the brain makes the bladder empty when it isn’t yet full. In the majority of people, no underlying cause is found. Neurological conditions e.g., multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease should be ruled out.

How is it diagnosed?

It is important to rule out reversible causes, like a urinary tract infection. If you have

had blood in your urine, have associated pain, continuous urine leakage or sudden onset symptoms, you should see a specialist urgently. Diagnosis is otherwise based primarily on the history of the symptoms, with the help of questionnaires and a bladder diary.

What tests do I need?

In the first instance, some simple tests are required. A urine sample should be tested for infection and an ultrasound of your kid neys and bladder with a scan after passing urine to make sure the bladder is empty form the mainstay of tests. You may need an inspection of your bladder with a camera – this is called a flexible cystoscopy

Are there any preventative measures?

Most people develop idiopathic OAB, which means there is no known cause. It is understood that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is beneficial as being overweight and smoking does worsen symptoms.

Can it be cured?

OAB symptoms can be controlled, but there

Botox is a neurotoxin that works at the nerve receptors in muscles to cause tem porary paralysis. It has been used in the bladder for well over 35 years. It is injected into the bladder wall using a camera passed into the waterpipe. It is typically carried out under local anaesthetic and requires only a few hours stay in hospital. It has been shown to be highly ef fective but wears off gradually and will need repeating approximately every six to nine months. Side effects include a tem porary inability to pass urine, infection and blood in the urine.

Learning points:

Overactive bladder is common and affects both men and women. There is usually no cause found but symptoms can be managed. You are likely to need investigations carried out by a Urologist. If conservative measures and tablets fail, then Botox injections into the bladder can be very effective.

If you would like to speak to our team about overactive bladder please email us info@urologyclinics.co.uk

Why wait for treatment?

At the OrthTeam Centre, we offer fast-access, face-to-face and virtual consultations with our experts, who have trained to develop the highest level of specialisation in their chosen area, which includes all aspects of orthopaedics, neurosurgery, peripheral nerve, neurology, pain management, rheumatology and sport and exercise medicine.

OrthTeam Centre patient Jean Ellis, 72, decided to self-fund her surgery with Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon Mr John Leach, due to being in so much pain that she became a prisoner in her own home.

Jean explains: “A spinal disc had protruded and was pressing on my sciatic nerve, causing severe back and leg pain. It became too much to bear; I couldn’t go out of the house and was unable to drive.

“I wanted to start living my life again and didn’t want to wait months on end for treatment. I decided to go private and was lucky enough to be able to afford to pay for my procedure. I was quickly seen by Mr Leach and even had surgery a week earlier than originally planned as I was in agony.

“I’m delighted to say that my procedure was a success and I’m now back doing the things that I love, like going for long walks. My advice to anyone who is suffering in pain is that if you can self-fund your treatment, do it – you won’t look back!”

URBAN GREeN SPACES

OutdOors

ACCORDING to environment charity Keep Britain Tidy, one of the often-overlooked aspects of the North-South divide is our relative lack of urban green spaces. Certainly, London residents are never far away from a massive park, whereas here in Manchester our jewels such as Heaton Park, Fletcher Moss and Platt Fields Park are further out of town.

But I’m not complaining. Would I rather live near this great North western city than anywhere else? Of course! And we’re not entirely lacking some lovely tranquil green spaces right under our noses too – we just have to know where to look. Here’s three that even our most urban readers might be able to find in walking distance:

Clayton Vale mountain bike trails

An extended attraction at our prized National Cycling Centre, a stone’s throw from the velodrome at Sportcity you’ll find 12km of crafted bicycle trails, including a “Skillszone”, where you and the family can enjoy some proper off-road riding right in the heart of the city. The colour coded trails are graded easy, moderate, difficult and extreme and the grades are designed to challenge the beginner through to the more experienced mountain biker.

Levenshulme secret lake

Who would guess that hidden behind an industrial estate in the middle of the South Manchester suburb of Levenshulme, with no signage or markings, there would be a quiet, un spoilt lake where you can fish, walk and even have a paddle, all the while seeing nothing but nature? A former cooling reservoir that was abandoned by its industrial owners, it has been cleaned up by the local community and is now a beautiful peaceful place where you can go and feel truly outdoors – that is, if you can find it…

Ashton Canal

I’ve often extolled the pleasures of cy cling to work, and for those that don’t fancy duelling with buses on the Aroads, there is an entire network of green routes in and out of cities, if you take the time to look for them. The Ashton Canal links the centre of Manchester with its Eastern outskirts and provides a scenic and safe route in and out. Don’t expect it to be quiet though – it’s loved by runners, fishers, boaters, dog walkers and cyclists alike.

Silence of the lambs

Living on a peaceful, beautiful, sun-kissed Andalucían hillside sure has its benefits. For nine months of the year, those of us lucky to live here spend our free days lazing by our pools, our nights on our starlit ter races, majestic mountains behind us, the shimmering Mediterranean Sea below. Our noisiest neighbours? The cicadas.

But being only a short drive from the lovely holiday hotspot of Nerja, come summer, things change when fun loving turistas (tourists) descend on us. So, this spring, I took matters into my own hands and formed a residents’ association to protect the peace and quiet of our little hillside. So far, I have a membership of…

one. Yours truly. You see, here in Spain, most of the international community, in cluding his Lordship, sensibly embrace the seasonal highs and lows. Come summer, my Dutch, Belgian, Swedish and Danish neighbours opt for noisecancelling headphones by day, wax earplugs by night. The local Guardia Civil only ever called if the noisy tourists get truly out of hand. I, on the other hand, have spent the last couple of months pa trolling the hillside, my trusty decibel recorder and sad little notebook by my side; ammunition to fuel my Victor Meld rew meets Kill Bill morning bangingon-the-offending-Airbnbers-doors routine; my extendable, transportable power hose locked and loaded, ready to soak any re peat offenders. Which has gained me quite the reputation with the local police. And my very own nickname: La Aguafiesta Inglesa. The English Party Pooper.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I know what a hypocrite I am. For many years, I was one of those fun-loving tourists. No doubt driving everyone nuts with my loud music, all-day drinking sessions and raucous parties. But last Saturday, when a group of Welsh forty-somethings arrived for a stag week

and treated us all to fourteen hours of Spotify’s loudest rock playlist, at 4am, my older, inner Victor Meldrew came out to play. Dressing gown billowing, madwoman hair flowing, banging on their Airbnb door. Having read them the riot act, several chagrined faces looked forlornly back at me, their fun-in-the-sun stag week in jeopardy. Then suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I spied one guy, doubled over, seemingly crying with laughter at my outrage, which did nothing to improve my mood. So, I turned my steely Kill Bill stare on him, only to then find myself bursting out laughing too.

It was Tom… the youngest brother of one of my old uni mates… who had witnessed my party girl shenanigans many times over the years, including several particularly wild weekends in Marbella at his parents’ holiday home. Plus, he had photos. So, what else could any self-respecting, caught-red-handed hypocrite do but lay down her power hose, head inside, line up the tequila shots, turn the Bose to max and get the party started? For eighteen noisy hours. So, when the banging on the door started again the next morning, this time courtesy of Police Officer Ruiz, it was I, La Aguafiesta Inglesa, who Tom pushed to the front to be read the riot act. Oh, the shame.

Right, must dash. I need to call an emergency meeting of my residents' association to disband it. All those in favour, say aye…

Sexy Fish

Miami

Asian restaurant and bar

Launched in Miami almost two years ago in the Brickell neighbourhood of Miami, Sexy Fish serves Japanese-inspired sushi, sashimi, seafood, fish and meat.

Sexy Fish is underwater world-inspired, with creative menus, hard-to-resist theatrical cocktails and come Friday and Saturday after dark, it turns into an electric drinking and dining spot, where guests are entertained with house music from resident DJs and in ternational guests.

The glamorous and opulent interiors are in spired by the style and sophistication of a mid-century brasserie and motifs of the ocean. There is a sense of theatre through 10 incredible sculptures and 26 fish lamps, floating around a large waterfall column.

The Rainbow Reef Room is an exclusive and dramatically designed private dining space, which sits adjacent to the main restaurant. The room has illuminated agate flooring, blue silk cladded panels, comfortable coral seating and a live coral fish tank which stretches across the entire back wall of the

FOOD 44 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK

room. The space also features a retractable shade that opens up to the main dining hall, allowing guests to be part of the restaurant experience if they desire, or kept closed for a moment of escapism.

The restaurant is also fitted with coral leather seating and high-gloss tables made from eucalyptus. The destination bar has a pink onyx top, and high teal stools, and boasts Dom Pérignon and Opus One selections, along with wines sourced locally from the

US. Plus, there’s an extensive and irresistible cocktail list.

The food is amazing, the restaurant beautiful, the washrooms Instagram-worthy and the team friendly and super-professional. So, if you find yourself in Miami, this is a must-visit restaurant. It’s a little expensive, but it’s a great night out and worth every cent.

And we can’t wait for Sexy Fish Manchester to open!

SIFNOS Cycladic island living

Sifnos, the island of harmony, is in the Cyclades and is the birthplace of famous Greek poets as well as award-winning chefs, like Nikos Tselementes. Unique traditional villages, secluded beaches, unique arts, such as pottery, and hundreds of churches are spread around the island, waiting to be discovered.

Among the Cycladic islands, Sifnos stands out for both its architecture and natural beauty. Once a thriving gold and silver mining location, it has, since ancient times, cultivated a reputation for the finer things in life. Today, the island combines the picturesque with a rich tradition in cuisine and crafts, along with a high-level infrastructure in tourism. Despite its refined culture and ‘Cycladic chic’ ambience, Sifnos retains a low profile that instils a sense of peace in the visitor.

Traditional cuisine on Sifnos includes chickpea soup made in ceramic bowls, mastelo (lamb or goat baked on vine branches) and salad with capers. The island’s soil is famously fortified by clay, water and sun. Potters set up their workshops here

centuries ago and their ceramics became famous throughout Greece. You can visit the workshops, where traditional artisans still use the potter’s wheel to find out all about this unique art, and even buy some beautiful pots. But make sure you check out your baggage allowance first!

At the top of Agios Andreas Hill, you will discover the ruins of the fortified acropolis built in the Mycenaean era thousands of years ago and the church of Agios Andreas. The view is extraordinary.

Sifnos is also the ideal island for fans of hiking. Visitors have the chance to follow many alternative paths and enjoy the nature, along with numerous monuments, churches and villages.

TRAVEL

Sifnos is different from other Greek Islands we’ve visited. It has an air of peace and tranquility, and it’s stunningly beautiful. Kamares is the main port and consists mainly of one street containing a few shops, waterside tavernas and a delicious bakery. It’s not your usual port in that it doesn’t have the hustle and bustle and it’s immaculate.

We stayed in a wonderful house on a hill. The owners were lovely and our

tour guide, Emanuela, went above and beyond to show us all that Sifnos has to offer.

If you fancy a quieter Greek island holiday than Santorini, Zanti or Mykonos, then visit Sifnos. There’s lots to see and do if you don’t mind hiring a car... and the weather was amazing!

The Woof Guide to Morecambe and Heysham

Off-season seaside is brilliant for dogs, says Peppa

While our un-furry friends enjoy the pleasures of the seaside when it’s hot, now is the time for us!

At the end of September, the beaches of Morecambe opened up to dogs and for all winter, we will be able to get up close and personal with the coast. Personally, I love nothing more than rubbing my face in sand. It is so exciting. Not sure why I do it, but why do people sunbathe? It’s just stuff that makes us happy! The humans adore Morecambe. It fuels their nostalgia for days when they were young and puppyish and all they needed was a bucket and spade and imagination. Oh, and maybe a few coins for an amusement arcade.

One thing everyone does when they come here is pose beside the Eric Morecambe statue. Humans like to copy the cocked leg stance, but if I did that, it wouldn’t have gone down too well, so I just sat and admired the view!

Morecambe has an excellent coastal path, perfect for dog walking, which is another reason why my tail was wagging. I also liked looking out to the sea, which, ad mittedly, seemed a bit reluctant to come close to the shore. But there’s really so much to do here whatever the weather, including a stop-off at Carnforth station refreshment room, which is very dogfriendly and also a must-see for anyone who loves old black and white movies as this was where Brief Encounter was filmed. It still looks like something out of the 1950s and there’s a visitor centre too, which I was also allowed into, so very good for dog owners who need a cosy place to hang out. The humans had a light lunch of fish and chips and a cheese panini freshly cooked by very friendly people.

Although Morecambe has plenty of places to stay, including the very beautiful Art Deco Midland Hotel on the seafront, we were booked into the equally appealing The Royal Heysham, which is a beautiful location along the coast, a couple of miles away. Heysham village oozes charm with the churchyard of St Peter’s overlooking the coast and Glebe Garden and its funny figurines and statues surrounded by bountiful flowers and foliage and friendly visitor centre. This is quite the haven. First impression of The Royal is of an old inn, but it has a modern vibe inside.

I was desperate to laze about the room, which had a lovely double bed, oak doors and floors. There was a big TV, teas, coffees, a lovely roomy shower, warm lighting and a double bowl and dog bed for me.

Added to this is a fantastic pub garden, which, because the weather was so great when we were there, was packed full of people drinking Thwaites beer and eating house specialities, the most popular of which seemed to be enormous portions of fish and chips. There was a great selection of wines and other tipples and you can drink them in a lovely comfortable bar where dogs are also allowed. It’s a quiet place with just human talk and faint back ground music.

Sausage was on the breakfast menu for me while the humans tucked into a full English and vegetarian feast. We’d all slept brilliantly in this perfectly quiet spot and I couldn’t wait to hit the beach again. I just love the feel of wind in my fur and sand on my face – even when it cold. It’s so bracing!

Manchester city centre: Where life meets luxury, culture and gastronomy

Manchester city centre has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. From its industrial roots to its present-day status as a vibrant, cosmopolitan hub, and it has become a place where people not only work but choose to call home.

These apartments redefine urban living, providing residents with a sense of opulence and sophistication.

Manchester’s cultural scene is nothing short of extraordinary. Home to iconic venues like the Royal Exchange Theatre, The Bridgewater Hall, HOME and Manchester Art Gallery, the city buzzes with artistic energy. Living in the heart of Manchester also means having easy access to world-class theatre productions, concerts and exhibitions.

Not forgetting Manchester’s musical heritage and the city’s passion for football (you’re either a red or a white), which add to the cultural tapestry of Manchester.

The prestigious University of Manchester’s rich heritage dates back to 1824 and consistently ranks among the top institutions in the world, attracting students and researchers across the globe and infusing the area with a vibrant academic spirit. Its stunning campus, comprising historic buildings and modern facilities serve as a reminder to the city’s commitment to education.

But Manchester is not just a place to expand your mind; it’s also a paradise for shoppers with discerning tastes. The city’s shopping scene boasts a delightful mix of upmarket shops and boutiques, making it a Mecca for those seeking luxury and exclusivity.

Its diverse culinary landscape features everything your palate desires – street food markets that showcase global flavours, locally sourced ingredients, and innovative chefs that have elevated the city’s dining scene to new heights. Stroll through the Northern Quarter, where quirky cafés and independent eateries thrive, or dine in Spinningfields at Australasia, 20 Stories, The Ivy or the new, soon to be open, Sexy Fish.

With luxurious apartments that redefine comfort, a thriving cultural scene, upmarket shops, one of the best universities, and a diverse culinary landscape, it's no wonder that more and more people are choosing to call Manchester city centre home. However, it’s not just about the luxurious apartments and cultural delights; it’s also about community and connectivity, and a diverse and inclusive population creating an environment where everyone can feel at home.

The Spice Queen… PARVEEN

FOOD COOKED WITH LOVE

Back in 2019, I would sit and eat my Sunday breakfast while watching Parveen’s Indian Kitchen – a ten-part series of step-by-step Indian meals by Parveen Ashraf. So, when she published her first cookbook, I contacted her and she sent me a copy and I’ve used it ever since. So, I was delighted when Parveen called me to say that she had written her second book, Parveen’s Family Favourites. I love cooking (and cookery books) of any description, but Indian cooking is probably my favourite.

My second book is called Parveen’s Family Favourites – Food Cooked with Love. I am a true believer that food cooked with love tastes better. This new book is full of recipes that I usually cook for my husband and children but probably more so my children – and that’s why this book is dedicated to them. My children have supported me so much on my journey and I always say of them that they are my biggest fans but also my biggest critics.

The photographs are beautiful. How involved were with you with the shoot?

I am super-proud of the photographs and every dish has an image, even if it’s just a salad or dip. You know the adage ‘we eat with our eyes’, so I think it was important to have an image of each dish as it really looks. My photographer and I worked closely

together to create beautiful and realistic images. The best thing about the photoshoot was that I did it in my own kitchen studio and every dish was cooked by me, so we kept it all very real.

Are the recipes simple to cook, like in the first book?

Ah, okay. I am going to have to put my hands up and say, no, actually, they are not all simple to cook. Some are and others are quite complicated. For example, the recipe for lentil flatbreads takes 10 minutes to make and then in complete juxtaposition, the recipe for chicken biriyani takes two hours and has 12 steps, but it’s well worth the effort. One thing that the second book has in common with the first is that I have used a numbered step-by -step format to make the recipe easy to follow, but the best thing about my recipes, in my opinion (but I am biased), is that they really work!

What kind of dishes can we expect to see in this book?

The book has seven sections; the usual sections that one expects to see in a cookbook, such as starters, mains and desserts, but I have also deviated slightly and included some fabulous fusion food, plus a tasty little section called ‘my take on takeaways’. This section was inspired by my youngest son, who was missing his takeaways during the first lockdown. I have also written a plant-based section as my daughter prefers vegetarian food. Indian food lends itself so well to vegetarianism. There are myriad lentils, pulses and vegetables that transform into amazing dishes when given a spicy makeover. One dish that I particularly love and one that people may not have eaten is my is cabbage curry – try this recipe, email me and let me know what you think.

Cabbage curry

I suggest you try the cabbage curry below. I promise you, it tastes better than it sounds! So, let's look at the humble cabbage – definitely not the most glamorous vegetable in the world. When I think of plain, boring cabbage, I am transported back to my school days, when we were served overcooked, boiled cabbage in a soggy lump. As a child, I couldn't think of anything duller than cabbage. However, I now want to give cabbage a hot and spicy makeover. I want to teach you to make this flavoursome dish and give cabbage a little more character. Best of all, you can feed a family for a couple of quid!

Prep time: 10 mins / Cooking time: 35 mins / Serves 4-6

Ingredients

large onion, diced

1 small cabbage (500g), thinly sliced

1 red bell pepper, sliced

3 garlic cloves, crushed

4 fresh tomatoes, finely diced

2 tsp of dried fenugreek leaves

1 tbsp coriander powder

If you’re a fan of Indian food, I suggest you try the cabbage curry below. I made it last week, it’s delicious and you won’t be disappointed. Parveen’s recipes are easy to follow, with plenty of tips, and they are recipes that work. I caught up with Parveen to ask her about her new cookbook…
FOOD 66 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Small handful of fresh coriander

1 tsp chilli powder

4 tbsp vegetable oil

2 tsp salt

Method

1. Add the oil and onions into a large, heavy-based pot (use a pan with a lid). Fry the onions for 5 minutes until they are light golden brown.

2. On a medium heat, add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add the chilli powder, coriander powder and salt and cook for 30 seconds to fry off the spices. Add a splash of water so that the spices don’t burn.

3. Add the tomatoes and cook for 10 minutes on a medium to low heat. Stir occasionally so the sauce does not stick.

4. Add the cabbage, a handful at a time, allowing each handful to wilt down naturally. Once all the cabbage is in, add the peppers, turn the heat up to high and cook for 7-8 minutes as you keep stirring.

5. inally, add the fenugreek leaves, coriander and 3 tablespoons of water, cover the pan and simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes or until cabbage has cooked. Stir every now and again so that the cabbage does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

TOP TIP

The aim is to cook out the water in the cabbage at step 4, this is when it becomes a cabbage curry and not a boiled cabbage dish.

Banoffee pancakes & toffee sauce

Of all the stories in my cookbook, this is my favourite, because every time I read it, I am transported back to the days of being a mother to three young children. My children are all adults and have all left home now, but when they visit, somehow, they regress into their old childhood habits and one thing they all love is these pancakes – a little naughty, but nice! When they were young, I never really had much time on busy school days to make pancakes, so it became a weekend ritual instead. The kids would sit around the kitchen table in their pyjamas, armed with a huge jar of chocolate spread, eagerly

awaiting the hot pancakes to land on their plates. I remember that I used to have two pans on the go! However, even with my ambitious, ambidextrous pan action, I could barely keep up with the appetites of the ever-ready little Ashrafs!

Prep Time: 5mins / Cooking Time: 10mins Serves: 3-4

Ingredients

1 medium-sized egg

125g self-raising flour 200ml milk

1 tbsp caster sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tsp vegetable oil

¼ tsp baking powder

Method

1. In a large bowl, whisk the egg, then add the sugar, vanilla extract, milk, baking powder and whisk everything together. Now add the flour, a little at a time, and mix together until you have a smooth batter. Set aside and allow to rest for 10 minutes.

2. Heat a non-stick frying pan and brush lightly with ½ teaspoon of oil. Spoon in 1½ to 2 tablespoons of batter and form a small pancake. Use the tip of the spoon to shape the pancake into a circle using a swirling action. (Make several at one time).

3. Cook on a medium heat for 1 to 1½ minutes on one side. When small bubbles appear, flip them over. Cook for 1 minute on the other side until your pancakes puff up and are lightly golden in colour. Wipe your pan clean with kitchen towel and make the rest of the pancakes.

Recipe for homemade toffee sauce

Ingredients

100g soft brown sugar

85g butter

80ml evaporated milk

½ tsp vanilla extract

Method

1. Using a heavy-bottomed pan, heat the sugar and butter on very low heat until the butter has melted.

2. Now turn the heat up to medium until the sauce starts to bubble a little, making sure to stir continually so you don’t get clumps. Now turn the heat down to low. You should have a smooth, dark-coloured

amber liquid with no grains.

3. Slowly add the evaporated milk and vanilla and whisk together (be careful as it can splash at this point). Keep whisking until you have a smooth toffee sauce.

COOKING WITH GREENS

Cannellini bean and cavolo nero soup

FOOD 68 / GLOSSYMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Food editor, stylist and author Angela Boggiano and her photographer husband, Craig Robertson, owners of At the Kitchen in Cheadle Hulme, share their recipe ideas.

Hearty greens and cabbages are perfect for adding flavour, texture, colour and vital nutrients to simple dishes as well as being great value for money. Savoy cabbage and the increasingly popular cavolo nero are sturdy and leafy greens that are readily available, making them great for adding to stews, soups and stir fries. Savoy cabbage is great shredded and stir-fried with garlic, shallots and chilli for a simple, super-tasty supper, so easy to prepare. Cavolo nero is a green that works wonderfully with big, rich, earthy flavours, like sausages, lentils, chickpeas, salami and bacon. These are our favourite ways to cook and eat these fantastic vegetables, just perfect for this time of year. Give them a go…

Cannellini bean and cavolo nero soup

Adding some pieces of stale bread to the soup, especially a wonderful, textured sourdough, gives a lovely silky texture and thickens the broth. Plus, a little extra buttered toast on the side!

Serves 4

2 tbsp olive oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

100g cubed pancetta

2 garlic, cloves, finely chopped

1 sprig rosemary, leaves finely chopped

1 pinch chilli flakes

400g tin plum tomatoes

1 litre vegetable stock

200g cavolo nero, chopped

400g tin cannellini beans

35g stale bread, broken into small pieces

1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and cook the onion gently for 6 minutes. Add the pancetta and continue cooking for 4 minutes.

2. Add the garlic, rosemary and chilli flakes. Cook for 1 minute, then add the plum tomatoes and vegetable stock.

3. Stir in the cavolo nero, beans and bread. Let the cavolo nero wilt down and then cook for another 10 minutes.

4. Serve the soup drizzled with a really good peppery extra virgin olive oil.

Garlicy greens, egg and chilli and mint sauce

This is a simple, delicious supper –loads of greens with loads of taste.

Serves 2

350g savoy cabbage

2 tbsp olive oil

1 small onion or 2 shallots, finely sliced

4 cloves garlic, finely chopped

Garlicy greens, egg and chilli and mint sauce

2 large free-range eggs

2 large slices sourdough

For the chilli sauce

1 red chilli, finely chopped

2 tbsp fresh mint, finely chopped

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1. Remove the tough stalks from the savoy cabbage leaves and shred the leaves finely. Heat half the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium-low heat and add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add the garlic, cook

for 1 minute, then add the cabbage stir and reduce the heat and cook for 8 minutes, stirring every so often until wilted.

2. Push the wilted cabbage to the side and add the remaining oil to the pan. Add the eggs to the pan and cook until the white turns opaque. Toast the bread.

3 Mix together the finely chopped chilli and mint with the oil and a pinch of salt. To serve, drizzle the sourdough with a little of the chilli oil. Top with the greens and finish with the fried eggs and an extra drizzle of the chilli sauce.

Richard Smith

Richard started his business in Manchester in 2010 at the age of 24. Creating bespoke menswear pieces, his business grew year on year. He was commissioned to create pieces for many celebrities and sport stars. In 2019, he made the move to larger premises in Hale, where he launched his first ready-to-wear collection.

What has been your greatest achievement in business to date?

In 2012, I showcased my work at New York Fashion Week with Nolcha. It was a proud moment for me as the show opened with fellow Mancunian Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green label and I had the honour of closing the show with my suit collection. It was a whirlwind and a moment I will never forget.

What would you tell your 24-yearold self?

Believe in yourself. Having worked eight years for Armani during my studies, I was

incredibly intimated by the industry when starting the business (‘imposter syndrome’!). I must give a massive thank you to all my clients over the years who have encouraged me and given me the confidence to expand my business.

What next for Richard Smith?

Everyone who knows me knows that I’m never content! I am constantly striving to make my brand better and keep my existing clients excited. I am currently in the process of launching my new shoe product, which will enable customers to create their own shoe, trainer, boot, etc.

Helen is also the Chair of the Girls’ Schools Association Education Committee.

What are the benefits of an independent school education? Independent schools boast outstanding specialist teachers who foster a genuine love for learning and intellectual curiosity. This educational foundation not only ensures academic success but also instils confidence in students, inspiring them to believe they can excel in any career path. Beyond academics, independent schools prioritise a rich extracurricular experience. For instance, MHSG’s sixth form enrichment courses prepare students for university and expand their horizons beyond the standard curriculum. Students engage in diverse activities like music, drama, sport, art, computing, Model United Nations and science, fostering well-

roundedness and adaptability. This holistic approach builds self-esteem and tenacity, equipping students with the resilience needed to tackle life's challenges beyond the school gates. Independent schools, while an investment, offer a holistic education that pays dividends throughout a student's life.

How can schools prioritise student wellbeing? At schools like mine, where proactive pastoral care is paramount, the primary focus is on students' happiness and leadership skill development within a secure environment. We emphasise students having a say in school operation and encourage discussions on topics about which they are passionate.

Alongside this will be a new website and marketing strategy. I feel completely at home here in Hale and am looking forward to a strong future establishing my brand in the area.

Prioritising mental health proactively and integrating character education into the curriculum is essential. Each student is seen as an individual, requiring tailored support for their holistic growth. A content, successful student not only excels academically but also comprehends the value of compassion and their role in local, national and global communities. Nurturing both academic and pastoral aspects of a student's character should be the core objective of all educators and is central to our mission at MHSG.

Housing Units is a familyrun business established for over 76 years and boasting over 120,000 sq. ft. of home furniture, interior design ideas and seasonal departments, including one dedicated to Christmas.

What are the four autumn trends, and which is your favourite?

We have four very different trends this autumn: Urban Umber, Luxe Naturale, Scandi Retreat and Rustic Grace. My favourite is Urban Umber. Umber and rust are this season’s hottest colour trends; with warm hues and cosy textures, this trend gives the perfect blend of comfort and practicality. I find that our trends help to inspire a style that you may never have considered before.

Any tips on how to achieve the Urban Umber trend with down-to-earth comfort?

This trend is all about bringing comfort and warmth using beautifully curated home furnishings that inject luscious tones into your home. Earthy colours emphasise the warmth of the solid oak dining table and using a mix of colours for dining chairs brings together the colours of the trend. Create an inviting atmosphere in your home with accessories, throws, plush cushions and a cosy rug for the perfect blend of comfort and practicality –there are many ways to bring the Urban Umber trend to your home.

Can you share a heart-warming story that highlights the positive impact your dog beds have for a dogs life?

Bob Baker

Are you in need of space, help, counselling and a sense of peace? Then look no further than Bob Baker, founder of Cheshire Wellness Centre. By the canal in the Cheshire countryside outside Lymm, the Cheshire Wellness Centre is a safe haven. Boasting more than 30 qualified therapists from 13 psychological and holistic disciplines, and ADHD assessments and treatments available soon.

What services are on offer?

When it comes to mental health, there’s no quick fix or one-size-fits-all solution; everyone’s journey is unique. That’s why our holistic approach is focused on overall wellbeing rather than just traditional counselling. Our range of activities includes nutritional therapy, mindfulness, life coaching, clinical hypnotherapy, holistic reiki, and counselling. We also offer biofield cleansing, reflexology, sound baths, yoga and – coming soon – kickboxing classes for women. All this is delivered in our tranquil setting, located just outside Lymm in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.

How do I know I need help?

I was alcohol dependent. I used alcohol to medicate and mask my mental health problems. Like so many other alcoholdependents, when the bad times rolled, I saw alcohol as a crutch to help me through – from family bereavements to the various problems life threw at me. But the comfort I sought from drink was a delusion. It led to deep depression, anxiety and a sense of morbidity. Inevitably, my otherwise stable family life came under threat, so I sought the help that I needed.

CJ ROUND

With a wealth of experience within the landscaping sector, CJ Round has transformed thousands of gardens in Lymm and its surrounding areas. Being a family-run business, quality and professionalism are key to the business values and experienced advice is provided every step of the way.

When is the best time to have my garden landscaped? Landscaping can be completed all year round. Some customers like to have their garden completed before summer so they can make the most of the space. Turf can be fitted all year round and is actually easier to maintain in colder months. We work year-round and due to the number of teams we have, we try our best to meet your deadlines. However, bear in mind that quality companies may carry some wait time and if you want a full design with one of our recommended designers, this can take time to complete.

Is porcelain paving slippy?

Porcelain paving has quickly become a landscaping favourite due to its modern

appearance and ability to match indoor flooring with your outdoor floor easily. Some people are unsure as they worry it may become slippy when wet. However, we work with quality local suppliers and only use R11 anti-slip porcelain, which does not become slippy and, furthermore, it is stain-proof. Porcelain fitted by us will continue to look great for many years. During our initial quotation appointment, we will discuss material options, recommend the best options and use our knowledge to provide you with all the facts. We can even recommend petfriendly options and wildlife-friendly options. We can fit wildflower turf too, which looks simply beautiful and provides lots of cover and nectar for local wildlife.

How do I get help?

Manchester High School for Girls students celebrate results success

Students at Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG) celebrated their A-level results success with prestigious university courses, apprenticeships and sports scholarships on the horizon.

MHSG sixth formers are looking forward to degrees in medicine, engineering, graphics, music and medieval studies as well as global company apprenticeships, and the school’s staff are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved.

Mrs Helen Jeys, head mistress at MHSG, said:

“The grades our students have achieved after these turbulent few years are the con sequence of their fantastic work ethic and positive approach to study as well as the care, support and superb teaching of the staff here. I could not be prouder of our Class of 2023.

“The sheer breadth of subjects and destinations our students are going on to demonstrates their individuality, which is one of our values and something we nur ture in all of our students. Our senior

sixth students are a talented, conscientious, inspiring and resilient group of young people who will, I am sure, continue to challenge and excel in their chosen fields. We look forward to seeing them continue to flourish as they progress beyond the school gates.”

The school has seen more results success this year, with students off to a wide range of universities from September to study a variety of subjects, everything from computer science and music to French and Portuguese.

Eve Pessagno, MHSG’s head girl, achieved A*AA and is off to Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford to study music. She said, “It’s just been fab. I joined MHSG in the sixth form and I slotted straight in, everyone’s been so supportive.”

Catrin Barrowcliff, a member of the Head Girl Team who achieved A*AA and will be studying history and Spanish at King’s Col lege, London, said, “The teachers always go the extra mile, they’ve been amazing. I didn’t think I was going to do well and now I’m so happy!”

Parents accompanying their children to col lect results in person were incredibly proud.

Lynne Bianchi, mum of Head Girl Eve, said: “The support from MHSG has been excep tional. Eve was seriously ill before her exams and teachers would come to the hospital to teach her. There was never a ‘no’. The support has been unremitting for her and for me as a parent, and that’s why my other two children will definitely be coming to MHSG.”

There are a limited number of places in the sixth form at Manchester High School for Girls for this September.

The school’s upcoming open events include the Senior School Open Evening (Thursday 12th October, 6pm-8.30pm) and Whole School Open Morning (Saturday 11th No vember, 9.30am-12.30pm).

The King's School's all-conquering rugby squad enjoyed a once in a lifetime summer tour of New Zealand and Malaysia, with the boys in blue coming up against some stiff competition but departing both countries widely regarded as great English sporting ambassadors. On the back one of the most successful seasons in King's 93-year rugby history, during which the squad won the Cheshire Cup and reached the last eight in the National Cup, they found the passionate Kiwi rugby culture hard to contain.

Matched against regional and older teams, the squad worked wonders to record three wins, one draw and five losses, picking up some hard-earned and enduring lessons during the fantastic two-week trip. The tour saw some fantastic sightseeing opportunities, but none more awesome than the haka, which, as King's Head of Rugby Giles Heth erington said, "Was spine-tingling, motivational and terrifying in equal measure,

In total, 39 young men and six staff took the 10,000-mile flight and the fortnight was as unforgettable as it was frantic, as Giles explains: “We played some fantastic rugby at an extremely high standard and experienced and embraced countless new things. It was a trip that the boys shall never forget and the memories will be discussed for just as long. The King’s School players were a credit to themselves on the field but, more importantly, off it as well. They return to the challenging school circuit better players and more mature young men. Touring is the best thing about rugby and long shall it continue."

The tour included seven matches against New Zealand clubs and schools and two final matches in Kuala Lumpur. Starting off in Auckland with visits to the All-Blacks Experience and the Sky Tower, sandwiched between competitive fixtures, the team then headed south to Taupō for further matches as well as visiting the amazing Huka Falls and surrounding thermal spas. On to Rotorua, where the squad were able to experience a traditional Maori village and

Hāngī meal, followed the next day by another adrenalin-fuelled visit down the Skyline and Luge. The next couple of stops entered the verdant and mountainous countryside, including Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, with games against some mature and physical club sides, including Greerton Marist and Kahukura.

The flight out of Auckland to Kuala Lumpur saw a complete change of culture and scenery, with the towering skyscrapers and hustle of a busy city all nestled in the Malaysian jungle.

Giles added: "There were incredible sites, such as the ancient Batu Caves, and the tal lest twin-tower structure in the world, the Petronas Towers, but, naturally, the rugby still very much topped our priorities and the two final fixtures included a victory and a draw versus National Defence University of Malaysia and ARAS Buffalo Rugby Club.”

“My time at Withington has been an absolute joy. I’m so grateful to everyone for the support I’ve had along the way – from the students and teachers to everyone who keeps the school running. The girls are incredible, we are each other’s support system, and I couldn’t have wished for a better group of people to help me through my journey.”

TECHNO-LUGGAGE

If you love gadgets and technology, you’ll already know that whether you’re at the supermarket-bag-for life end of the market, or the monogrammed Italian pigskin end, there’s got to be a better way to carry your stuff around. Think tech first…

Ortlieb kit bags

My favourite maker of outdoor and extreme sports baggage, Germany’s Ortlieb makes bags that are so strong and completely air-tight that you can drop them out of a helicopter cargo net in the middle of the wilderness and they’ll survive. So they’ll be fine on your roof rack en route to Eurocamp. My go-to big holdall is the massive 110 litre Duffle, with straps that convert it into a backpack. £195, ortlieb.com

Bellroy RFID wallet

Not only a slim and handsome wallet, this clever Hide & Seek features RFID protection. RFID-blocking wallets are designed to help protect you from a specific type of theft called RFID skimming. This is where information from high frequency (13.56MHz) RFID-based credit cards, passports and transport passes is read and duplicated. Keep one step ahead of the crooks. £79, bellroy.com

Apidura bike luggage

Of course, if you’re a cyclist you can do anything from shopping to camping adventures with little more than a wicker basket on the front, or a huge hiking backpack like we used to as kids. But with the rise in ‘bikepacking’ there is of course a whole world of high-tech equipment for the kit-hungry hobbyists. One of the best brands is the UK-based independent manufacturer Apidura, which makes bags of every conceivable shape and size to fit around your bike and body for wild adventures. apidura.com

Naked Solar backpack

Imagine being able to charge all your electronics for free, infinitely, while on the go. OK, solar panels are hardly the stuff of science fiction nowadays, but what is impressive is the way increasingly efficient solar powered devices are being designed seamlessly into everyday objects. This technical backpack is a great example: unlike earlier incarnations of the solar backpack, this one doesn’t even look as though it has anything unusual about it. The black panel is subtle and unobtrusive, yet delivers a full phone charge in 2-3 hours in direct sunlight. £120, nakedsolar.co.uk

SPRING INTO ELECTRIC

I LOVE cheap cars. Maybe it’s just the age I’ve got to now, but I think there’s nothing more stylish than a car that isn’t trying too hard. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m nothing if not a hypocrite –regular readers will know full well that I’ve been known to prance around with borrowed McLarens and Bentleys all over social media, and I once bought a car because I’d seen one in a Jay-Z video.

But perhaps it’s a sign of the times that the car that’s expected to be the most talked-about launch of 2024 is also one that promises to be one of the cheapest. And nobody’s more excited to see the new Dacia Spring than I am.

Dacia has always been cool anyway. From its Transylvanian utili tarian heritage to its too-basic-for-a-Renault-badge rebirth, it’s the ultimate classless conveyance for people that think about other things besides “prestige”.

The newest addition to the range, the all-electric Spring, promises to be a historic entry into the UK market because it will truly de mocratise the switch to EV motoring, undercutting the current

cheapest electric car on the market by what promises to be a significant margin.

It’s a city car, meaning tight turning circles, tough scuff-proof plastic trim and bouncy suspension for handling potholes and speed bumps. But it also promises a range, cruising speed, charging efficiency and interior capacity worthy of longer-distance journeys too.

Design-wise, I’m fascinated to take a closer look. I tend to think that something that has been designed to a keen price point is more interesting than something that has been designed with carte blanche and a premium budget. Expect steel wheels with plastic trims, unpainted hard black plastic surfaces and very few bells and whistles. Yet the colours and lines in the promo images look really thoughtfully put together, and the reputation for reli ability and value is rock solid.

Final details, pricing and specifications are yet to be revealed, but Dacia UK is already receiving registrations of interest and expecting to start taking orders before this year is out.
