RICK HARTMANN

Unlike most students, my time at Salisbury was limited to just my junior and senior year. Even so, I felt at home at the school from the outset. While the academics were challenging at first coming from a public high school, the quality of the faculty and the school's fostering a sense of community made those challenges easier to overcome. Today, I still have fond memories of some of the faculty. I think this is largely due to their diverse backgrounds and showing a genuine interest in my well being and academic success.

Over the years, I have to say that I've had little contact with my classmates but the relationships and time I spent with them haven't been forgotten. A good example has been reestablishing some of those connections with the group who are working on the reunion committee. When I spoke with Beck Miller for the first time in fifty years, it felt like we had just finished football practice and were headed to the dining hall for dinner. I'm pretty certain that over reunion weekend many will feel the same way which begs the question why we haven't done this sooner.

It's apparent that the schoolhas done some very positive things since my time there. Back then, we didn't have things such as Big Brothers, boat building, the culinary and debate club and the athletic facilities that exist today. Yet the school's unique traditions and emphasis on community and integrity have withstood the test of time and will likely continue to do so. They are a big part of who I am today. If you're ever in southwest Florida, look me up and we'll go sailing!

the school has given me the freedom to evolve. From my start as a math teacher, I was able to worm my way into the art department teaching mechanical drawing, then became 50% of the art department, introduced CAD, and 3D modeling, started the woodworking program, and most recently the Boat Building program. www.sarumboats.blogspot.com

On the athletic side, while I was only a mediocre wrestling coach (all things being measured against Robin Meade) but ran a very competitive road cycling program for several years and have made rock climbing and bouldering available as a recreational program in the fall.

The long breaks in the school year have allowed me to pursue my own art career www.salmonkill.com and do a fair amount of traveling, some school related (to China and Bhutan) and some personal, including a multi-pitch climb on the Grand Teton (the Lower Exum) and the traverse of the Black Cuillin on the Island of Skye in the UK. My favorite destination, where I’ve been able to go with my family and solo, is of course, Scotland.

...AND NOW BECK MILLER

I am so grateful and appreciative of my experiences at Salisbury during 1969 to 1972. Learning and growing within a special community of great teachers and classmates was so positive and transformative as I look back over the past 50 years. Reconnecting with classmates during the spring and summer of 2022 for our 50th reunion underscores how wonderful these guys are and how they each remain so special as life-long friends. Lessons learned inside and outside of the classroom from great teachers, who shared their diverse and amazing life experiences, instilled within me a passion to learn, and to participate and give back in local communities, create a family and to make a positive difference wherever possible.

BECK MILLER Cont'd

After graduating from Kenyon College with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1977, I pursued a career in corporate banking as means to learn about analyzing and solving financial problems. I also met through a Salisbury friend my future wife, Terry Blake, a graduate of Trinity College, a fantastic tennis player and mother of our two cherished sons, Blake and Chip. Building a career and raising a family was rewarding and challenging as my career in banking was centered in New York City with two years abroad in London.

While working in NYC, we lived in Lawrenceville, New Jersey where our sons were born. Pee Wee hockey practices at 5am, teaching Sunday Schooland serving as President of the Trustees at Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church were cherished experiences. My banking career ranged from credit risk analysis to middle market lending to national corporate banking to internationalbanking. I created safe, new financial products for Barclays. These included financing for limited partnerships backed by surety bonds from AIG (before AIG’s credit default swaps contributed to the subprime mortgage crisis), selling leases to internationalinvestors as well as extending bankruptcy financing to bankrupted firms that needed to deleverage as part of a recovery plan.

Driving my fascination with analyzing and solving financial problems was Joseph Schumpeter’s concept of creative destruction. Commentary from Carnegie Mellon describes creative destruction as a process that sees new innovations replacing existing ones that are rendered obsolete over time. Capitalism is never stationary and always evolving with new markets and new products entering the sphere.

Living and working in London for Barclays during 1988 to 1990 with my family was a marvelous experience when the boys were 5-7 and 2-4. It brought new perspectives and appreciations for different cultures for all of us while we lived in Surrey. I commuted to London’s FinancialDistrict amidst IRA bomb blasts.

Returning stateside and commuting from Princeton Junction to downtown Manhattan continued until 1994. Being an earlier riser to get a seat on the train to NYC probably saved my life. On February 23, 1993, I caught an early NJ Transit train to Newark. After taking PATH, I walked up the escalators in the World Trade Center around 7:30am to our offices at 222 Broadway. An hour or so later, we heard the bomb blast at the escalators in the WTC from our offices on Broadway. That was a life changing event when we elected to move to Florida to pursue entrepreneurial activities as well as year-round tennis while being close to my wife’s parents.

BECK MILLER Cont'd

The next 14 years, 1994 to 2008, were exhilarating as well as tragic and very difficult. After Al Gore invented the internet, I created virtual communities marketing real estate listings in Florida communities to people wanting to visit and/or relocate to Florida. The most successful communities were purchased by a major real estate developer. Tragedy came when the boys were 11 and 14 and their mom, my wife, developed and died from brain cancer. Fortunately, my wife’s parents lived nearby and together our sole focus was caring for my sons. A wonderful school community helped in so many ways. I’m extraordinarily proud how my sons found their passions, within their grief, and now have their own young families, each with the love of their life. Each has a baby boy. My oldest is a lawyer with a mid-sized New Jersey law firm. My youngest joined the Army after college to pursue a medical career. He has completed his residency as a neurosurgeon at Walter Reed. He is now a staff neurosurgeon at Walter Reed trying to understand and solve the disease that took the life of his dear mother.

The next chapter in my career started on October 20, 2008, during the subprime mortgage crisis. On that day, Henry Paulson announced nine healthy banks had agreed to another government bailout featuring $250 billion of TARP Preferred Stock. (https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/hp1223). Paulson’s public comments didn’t square up for me, as a former banker, with the obvious financial distress in the banking sector. I then started researching and discovering half-truths that permeate many but not all TBTF banks. I moved to Charlottesville, Virginia to be off the beaten path and to be close to a world-class university amidst the beauty of Virginia. Building a team of like-minded individuals with complementary skills in systems engineering, law, accounting, and corporate governance, has produced 14 years later, a uniform mathematicalmodel for our startup venture. The model has been tested and validated. The model uses public information to measure and rate the consolidated financial and managerial performance of 100 TBTF banks during 1Q2005 to the latest quarter. The 100 TBTF banks own 78% of the total assets in the US banking industry. Cycling around and through the Blue Ridge Mountains and trout fishing in the beauty of Virginia continues the Sarum tradition of work hard/play hard. In last 10 days, I set three personal records cycling in the Blue Ridge Mountains while training to be smoked by Roger McKee when we cycle together for Legends Weekend. Decompressing and recharging in the beauty of Virginia refreshes mind, body and soul.

Participating and watching my sons and their families navigate today’s challenges is rewarding as they build their futures with similar goals of making a positive difference. I’m eternally grateful to my parents, Gordon and Barbara Miller, for my transformative years at Salisbury School. And to Salisbury School, thank you!

THEN... ...AND NOW ORSON MUNN, III

I have been married for 39 years as of the time of this reunion to a wonderful wife , Christine, and mother of my three daughters, Sasha, Cara and Cameron. Sasha has been married for several years to Briggs Elwell and they have given me a three year old granddaughter, Frederica and 1 year old grandson, Sutherland. My second daughter, Cara, is getting married in April. Cameron graduated last year from UPenn and is working in New York City in marketing for an Investment Bank. I plan to retire at the end of the year after running my own advertising and brand strategy firm for the past 27 years. Christine and I live in Southampton, N.Y., John's Island Club, Florida, and Snowmass Colorado. I have taken up golf, still play tennis, ski and enjoy target and upland bird shooting.

OLIVER SCHOLLE

Harvard College '76 BA East Asian History

All Ivy Honors '74 and '76. Harvard Athletic Hall of Fame '98.

I met my wife Beth Haffenreffer of 36 years in a bar on Fishers Island and the first thing she said to the person who introduced us was "what kind of parent would name a child Ollie Scholle". She has since come around and our oldest son is Ollie III and he just moved in with us in the Boston area with Ollie IV aged seven months.

We spent four years living in Santiago where our two sons, Ollie and Peter were born. Ollie would go on to St. Georges, Bates and the U.S. Navy for eight years before joining (and hopefully taking over) my investment management business this year. Peter went to Belmont Hill School and then Harvard where he rowed on the varsity eight and had the same coach (Harry Parker) who coached me in 1974. Peter was also commissioned in the Navy as a SEAL and is serving in San Diego. Peter celebrated the birth of his first child last year: Theo.

Our third child is Liza Scholle, also attended St. Georges, then Bates and has just moved to San Diego where she works for a tech start up called Automation Anywhere. We have a summer cottage on Fishers Island, NY. where all three kids spent their summers. We expect this spot will be the magnet to draw all of the kids and their growing families back from wherever their careers take them.

The first 25 years went so quickly. Didn't make 25th due to health issues at the time. Bet I missed something. Trying to make up for lost time. One of very few opportunities to re-engage with The Salisbury Community left. Admittedly, living in The Midwest and SW Florida areas, I didn't keep Salisbury foremost in my mind. Happily retired after a long stint working in the airline industry, was blessed to travel the world. Sharing story with people along the way provided for valuable insight and respect for how many different ways people shared experiences that molded their lives. As we gather together, it gives us time to pause and reflect upon what we were charged to go out and do, making a difference.

Professional Musician since 1977, electric & upright bass. Bandleader (The Shine Band) 19802020. Lived in Austin, TX for two years and Vail, CO. Relocated back to Boston in 1979. Early 80s original jazz rock fusion and R&B then all popular styles at nightclubs, weddings, corporate events. Roughly 2000 performances in New England. Performing Highlights: personal compositionsat The Esplanade in Boston, an event at The Smithsonian in DC, 1997 a three-week tour in China. Also taught music in Brookline & Quincy, MA. Planned retirement just before covid hit, then deleted all online music business presence while covid changed the industry. Like many of my classmates, there were significant challenges and decisions along the way. I’m grateful though, that I could make a living in professional music -so much more difficult for those today. Still enjoy playing a few small seasonal gigs.

Charitable and Civic Activities include Dana Farber Breast Cancer Research

I enjoy sailing on my catboat around The South Shore. Also have helped friends deliver their larger sailboats to various destinations, some offshore.

PAUL HAVILAND

I ended up eventually marrying Chris, a girl I met a few weeks after graduating from Salisbury so I guess you can say I married my teenage sweetheart. We raised three sons together and now have four grandchildren; three boys and finally one granddaughter, Celeste. The two oldest grandsons are now teenagers (14 and 13)! They attended the Buckley School in NYC but transferred during the pandemic lock-downs to the more isolated pre-prep boarding school, Cardigan Mountain, in New Hampshire. They love it there but Chris and I miss them greatly.

I have to submit two current photos. The first is a photo of me (white shirt), all three sons and all four grandchildren in our pool yard at Father's Day this year. The second photo includes a picture of my beautiful wife (who was busy taking the first photo and could not be in the group shot).

The bearded fellow on the left in the first photo is our youngest son, Paul II (37), the one holding his daughter is Matthew (41) and next to him is our oldest son, Michael (44). Both Michael and Paul went to Lawrenceville. Our middle son Matt went to Salisbury for one year but preferred to go to a school with girls (go figure?) so he transferred to Episcopal Academy outside of Philadelphia. The rest of the people in the photo are mostly inlaws.

The second photo is of me with my wife Chris (in the fur vest). The three men at both ends and the middle are Masters with the Golden's Bridge Hounds Riding Club. We hold two major riding events on our property each year with the club. The other woman in blue owns a cattle farm across from us. Her family founded the Hotchkiss School.

PAUL HAVILAND CONT'D.

All three of our sons have incredibly successful careers in finance. In the end, successfully raising and launching children and grandchildren into this world is really the only thing that matters in life (at least it has been for us). Chris and I are now raising our new "pandemic puppy", Chessie, an English Cocker Spaniel who keeps us busy and happy (she is the most loveable nutjob).

After many years in Greenwich, CT., Chris and I moved about 8 years ago to a horse farm about 15 minutes from Salisbury in order to be closer to our grandchildren who live in their weekend homes nearby in Millbrook, N.Y and Sheffield, MA, respectively.

Career and Professional Information

Charitable and Civic Activities

Interests/Hobbies/Clubs

Mostly just golf these days and occasionally shooting at our hunt club in Millbrook N.Y. I don’t bounce very well anymore so I had to cut back on skiing, volleyball and horseback riding. Also extensive property management activities on our horse farm.

Thoughts/Reflections on Salisbury

Salisbury did more to mold my character, values and drive-to-excel than any of my colleges, grad schools and business experiences. I told my sons at very young ages that I viewed the boarding prep school experience as being more important than college so they all went too. It is hard to believe but my oldest grandson will be submitting applications this fall to prep schools as he is already in his final year at Cardigan Mountain. He has only been to all-boy schools so far in his life so, unfortunately, I doubt Salisbury will be high on his list of priority schools.

The Hilltop was also instrumental in forging very close friendships and bonds among schoolmates, in part, because it was an extremely challenging 24/7 environment and we needed to adopt a "we are all in this together" mindset.

As of this writing, my class of '73 is about to go to our joint 50th Reunion celebration later this week with the class of '72. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again!
