We honor Daniel M. Cain P’15, former Salisbury Trustee and former Chairman of Cain Brothers and Company of New York, NY for his deep love and loyalty for Salisbury School and his conviction in the spiritual core of the Hilltop, the Chapel. Dan had a long admiration of the School even before his son William enrolled as a third form student. While spending weekends in the bucolic Northwest corner of Connecticut for 30 years Dan became very familiar with the school and was overjoyed when he and his wife, Kathy, became Salisbury parents in the fall of 2011. His experience attending an all-boys school was one of great pride and admiration, and the fact the Salisbury has remained a single sex school for all these years ultimately won the day for the Hilltop with the Cain family.

Dan’s love for Salisbury was reflected in his active and impactful work with the Board and his special admiration for the Chapel and its meaningful impact on the community. The Chapel, in his reflection, was a place where the students, faculty, and parents could share in the humanity of life. This educational aspect and enduring vision at Salisbury were central to the boys’ development into true gentlemen in Dan’s eyes.

As one can imagine, the Chapel was very special for the entire Cain family. Sadly, Dan was diagnosed with an aggressive terminal illness. When he knew his life was going to be cut short, he asked Kathy to get a clergy person with whom to speak. Kathy, of course, immediately said she would reach out to their church’s priest. Rather, Dan was emphatic that they contact Salisbury’s Reverend Dr. Kirk Hall ’90. During the planning of his impending memorial service, Dan stated that he wanted the services to be held in the Salisbury School Chapel and to be conducted by Reverend Hall…not the church the Cain family attended for thirty years, not the church he attended while growing up, but instead the Salisbury Chapel. Now named in his honor, The Daniel M. Cain Chapel.
