Unlocking Potential: Celebrating the Power of Apprenticeships
National Apprenticeship Week shines a spotlight on the remarkable impact apprentices have across the region. Nowhere is this impact felt more strongly than in Greater Manchester (GM), where apprenticeships are helping drive economic growth, bridging skills gaps, and creating career-defining opportunities.
A Partnership for Progress
In GM, apprenticeships are more than just a stepping stone— they’re a key part of the Integrated Technical Education, Skills and Work that our Mayor and the Combined Authority aspire to, aligning training with employer demands. By working closely together: colleges, businesses, and training providers ensure that apprenticeship programmes are finely tuned to the needs of key sectors like healthcare, digital technology, and manufacturing.
These tailored programmes do more than fill roles; they futureproof industries by cultivating talent with the specialist skills required if we are to address the challenges highlighted in the Local Skills Improvement Plan and if the government are going to deliver on their growth agenda.
Colleges: Champions of Change
Colleges in GM play an indispensable role in delivering over 8,000 apprenticeships in the City Region at all levels. Acting as hubs of expertise, they bridge the gap between education and employment by offering dynamic, industry-informed training and fostering valuable employer partnerships.
Beyond teaching technical skills, colleges also champion accessibility and inclusion. With tailored support services and flexible learning options, they empower individuals from diverse backgrounds to seize new opportunities. This commitment reinforces LSIP’s goal of building an inclusive economy that benefits everyone.
The Apprentice Effect
Apprentices inject workplaces with fresh ideas, energy, and creativity. Their combination of practical experience and structured learning bolsters productivity and drives innovation. It’s no surprise that many apprentices climb the ranks to leadership positions—proof of the transformational power. Employers across GM regularly praise apprentices for enhancing team culture and fostering a spirit of continuous learning. Their contributions often ignite new ways of working, making them invaluable to their organisations.
Filling Critical Gaps
Apprenticeships are instrumental in addressing talent shortages in vital sectors. In healthcare, apprentices acquire crucial caregiving and clinical skills, while in tech, they hone expertise in cybersecurity and software development—key to strengthening GM’s competitive edge in the digital age and in construction, which nearly makes up a third of college apprenticeship in GM, they are helping to develop the workforce needed to deliver the new homes that are going to be needed over the next five to ten years.
Stories of Success and Community Pride
The ripple effect of apprenticeships extends well beyond the workplace. By creating local job opportunities, they breathe life into communities, fostering pride and boosting prosperity. Across GM, boroughs have seen tangible benefits, from higher employment rates to the establishment of training hubs designed to support local talent.
National Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate these achievements. It’s a moment to applaud the apprentices who are shaping the region’s future and to acknowledge the employers and colleges that nurture their success.
Moving Forward Together
The future of apprenticeships in GM depends on collaboration. Employers, colleges, and local authorities must continue to work hand-in-hand to ensure programmes evolve alongside workforce needs.
This week, as we recognise the life-changing impact of apprenticeships, let’s recommit to supporting these pathways to prosperity. By championing apprentices and the institutions that empower them, we can drive Greater Manchester forward— together.

MILLY ORRETT’S JOURNEY
An Inspirational Start
When Milly Orrett began her Early Years Practitioner Apprenticeship Level 2 in November 2023, she embarked on a journey of growth, resilience, and passion. Her story highlights the transformative power of apprenticeships in shaping careers and making a difference in the early years education sector.
Milly’s affinity for working with young children and her desire to create positive change led her to a volunteering opportunity through Stockport Council. Working a few days a week at a local school, she discovered her love for supporting early learners. When a full-time apprenticeship opportunity arose, Milly eagerly embraced it, knowing it was the perfect next step.
Blending Learning and Practice
Milly’s apprenticeship provided the ideal combination of hands-on experience and structured training, guided by her dedicated assessor, Lisa Littlemore. She found herself in a supportive school environment, which she describes as more like a “massive family” than just a workplace.
Her role exposed her to various year groups, from nursery to reception classes. A pivotal moment in her journey came when she began supporting a pupil with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This experience revealed her natural ability to work with children with diverse needs, including those who are nonverbal, autistic, or diagnosed with ADHD or PICA.
“ The work can be very challenging, and each day is different,” says Milly. “But embracing the challenges has built my resilience and confidence.”
Comprehensive Training and Impact
Throughout her apprenticeship, Milly acquired invaluable skills under the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Her training encompassed welfare, care, and safety for young children, planning purposeful activities and play opportunities, creating educational programmes tailored to developmental needs, and collaborating with parents and multi-agency professionals to achieve the best outcomes for the students.
Milly credits much of her success to the unwavering support she received. “Lisa has been amazing in keeping me on track with the apprenticeship,” she says. “Donna, my tutor, helped me achieve my maths qualification. Her clarity and patience made all the difference. Juggling work and study isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. I would definitely recommend apprenticeships to my friends!”
The Mutual Benefits of Apprenticeships
Milly’s story highlights the value of apprenticeships for both individuals and employers. For apprentices, they provide a pathway to personal and professional growth, equipping them with the confidence and skills to excel while earning. For employers, apprenticeships bring fresh talent and enthusiasm, supported by tailored training to meet organisational goals.
Milly’s school exemplifies the power of creating a nurturing and supportive environment for apprentices, resulting in a dedicated and skilled team member.
Why Apprenticeships Matter
Milly’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of apprenticeships. They are not just qualifications but gateways to fulfilling careers and meaningful impact. Whether you’re an employer considering hiring an apprentice or an individual exploring career options, Milly’s story proves that with the right support, determination, and passion, the rewards are boundless.

“I’ve seen Milly overcome challenges and grow through her apprenticeship journey,” says Lisa. “She has turned these experiences into learning opportunities, building her confidence and expertise. Her daily work with the children demonstrates her dedication and ability to truly make a difference.”
STAFF SPOTLIGHT: LISA LITTLEMORE
Shining a Light on a Trainer Assessor Extraordinaire
In this edition, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Lisa Littlemore, one of our dedicated and experienced Trainer Assessors at Salford City College. Lisa has been a member of our Apprenticeship Team for nearly five years, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge from over 22 years of experience in the field.
A Passion for Early Years Education
Lisa’s career began with a love for working with children, starting out in a nursery. Through this experience, she recognised the critical need for high-quality staff training and development to ensure children received the best care and support. Motivated to make a difference, Lisa earned her assessor award qualifications, followed by teaching qualifications and a degree in Early Years and Childhood Studies.
“ For me, the greatest reward is witnessing apprentices grow in confidence and skill, progressing in
their careers”
Building a Strong Team
Today, Lisa is a vital part of our Early Years team, which boasts a diverse and experienced group of professionals. Together, they leverage their collective strengths to deliver a comprehensive apprenticeship offering across various workplaces and standards. This diversity allows her to work with both newcomers starting their careers and seasoned professionals advancing to leadership roles.
Making a Difference
“I take pride in adapting my approach to meet each apprentice’s unique needs, ensuring they receive the support necessary to thrive. The ever-changing nature of my work keeps it exciting, and I truly value the supportive culture that Salford City College provides” Lisa shared.
A Day in the Life of a Trainer Assessor
Lisa shared insights into her typical day, which is as varied as it is rewarding. Mornings might involve observing apprentices in school settings, evaluating their interactions with children and colleagues, and providing constructive feedback. These sessions often include liaising with workplace mentors and managers to ensure a supportive environment for the apprentices.
Afternoons might see Lisa delivering engaging taught sessions— both online and in person—or managing administrative tasks. These tasks include reviewing apprentices’ portfolios, monitoring logged off-the-job hours, updating risk ratings and action plans, and setting targets to support our apprentices to succeed. Progress reviews are another vital aspect of Lisa’s role, where she ensures apprentices remain on track by providing feedback and setting personalised goals.
Overcoming Challenges
Reflecting on her journey, Lisa highlighted the challenges of balancing full-time work, training, and single parenthood earlier in her career. These experiences have given her a deep understanding of the pressures apprentices face. She emphasises the importance of organisational skills and works closely with her apprentices to ensure they manage their time effectively, balancing workplace demands with apprenticeship commitments.
A Legacy of Dedication
Lisa’s dedication and empathy have made her a pillar of support for her apprentices. Her ability to inspire, guide, and adapt demonstrates her invaluable role at Salford City College. As she continues shaping countless apprentices’ careers, Lisa embodies the college’s mission of fostering excellence and opportunity.
We celebrate Lisa’s achievements and thank her for her unwavering commitment to the success of our apprentices and the broader Salford City College community.

SUPPORTING SUCCESS: PASTORAL CARE TO HELP APPRENTICES ACHIEVE
BREAKING BARRIERS THROUGH PRACTICAL SUPPORT
Pursuing an apprenticeship can be a rewarding journey, but it’s not without its challenges. For many, balancing training with family responsibilities or managing tight budgets can add significant pressure. At Salford City College, we’re committed to ensuring no apprentice is held back by these obstacles. Our robust pastoral care system, including the innovative Swish Clothing Exchange and Apprentice Hardship Fund, provides much-needed support where it matters most.
SWISH CLOTHING EXCHANGE: MORE THAN A SHOP
The Swish Clothing Exchange is a unique initiative designed to alleviate financial stress for apprentices. Stocked with donations of clothing, furnishings, and toys from our generous staff, Swish offers these items at extremely low prices or, in some cases, completely free to those facing financial difficulties.
“Whether it’s a warm coat for winter, essential furniture for a new home, or toys for a child, Swish helps ease financial pressures and ensures apprentices can focus on their training”
This welcoming space is more than just a shop; it’s a community resource where apprentices can find what they need to succeed.
EMPOWERING THROUGH THE APPRENTICE HARDSHIP FUND
All profits from Swish sales are reinvested into the Apprentice Hardship Fund, a crucial resource designed to help apprentices overcome unexpected challenges. The fund has been used to cover a variety of needs, from food shopping and travel expenses to books and resources. It’s even supported apprentices’ childcare needs and helped with accommodation costs during tough times.
This initiative underscores our commitment to ensuring financial barriers do not derail an apprentice’s journey. By providing tangible support, we empower our apprentices to stay focused on their goals and thrive both personally and professionally.
A FOUNDATION OF CARE
At Salford City College, we believe that success is built on a foundation of care. Initiatives like Swish and the Hardship Fund are just two examples of how we bring this belief to life. This compassionate approach ensures that no apprentice is left behind due to financial barriers. By offering practical support, we create an environment where every apprentice can flourish.
TOGETHER, WE ACHIEVE
Our innovative pastoral care programmes reflect a collective effort to ensure every apprentice has the tools and support they need to succeed. Together, we’re building a future where opportunities are accessible to all, and apprentices can achieve their full potential.
If you would like to donate any items of clothing or toys to our SWISH initiative, please contact us at apprenticeships@salfordcc.ac.uk or on 0161 631 5555.
BREAKING BARRIERS IN MATHS AND ENGLISH: OUR APPRENTICESHIP SUCCESS STORY
Maths and English often pose the greatest challenges for apprentices, but at Salford City College, we see them as opportunities to inspire, transform, and succeed. For many learners, these subjects bring memories of past struggles or a sense of irrelevance to their career paths. However, through innovation, dedication, and a focus on individual potential, we’ve turned these hurdles into stepping stones—and our results for the 2023/24 academic year are something to celebrate.
Across the UK, Maths and English remain areas where many apprentices face difficulties. Common barriers include negative past experiences that lead to low confidence, time constraints from balancing work and study, and a disconnect between these subjects and career aspirations. At Salford City College, we’ve made it our mission to address these challenges head-on, proving that with the right support, every apprentice can thrive.
Our tailored approach has delivered results that speak for themselves. In Level 1 Maths, our apprentices achieved scores 25% above the national average. For Level 2 Maths, the results were 17.6% above the national average. In English, we celebrated a 1% improvement above the national average at Level 1 and an outstanding 18.5% above the national average at Level 2. These achievements are a testament to the hard work of our apprentices and the unwavering commitment of our dedicated team.
At the heart of this success is our incredible team of six Maths, English, and support specialists. Their passion for empowering learners drives everything we do. Through one-to-one support sessions and small group tutorials, they provide personalised assistance that meets each apprentice's unique needs. Flexible learning plans ensure that apprentices can balance their work commitments with their studies, while continuous encouragement and constructive feedback create an environment where learners can grow and excel.
A key part of our approach is demonstrating the real-world relevance of Maths and English. We embed practical applications into workplace scenarios, showing how these skills enhance job performance, open doors for career progression, and build confidence. By making these subjects relatable and applicable, we help our learners see them not as obstacles, but as powerful tools for success.
Our support begins from the moment apprentices join us and continues throughout their journey. Regular progress reviews help us address challenges proactively, ensuring that learners stay on track. Online resources and flexible schedules cater to diverse learning styles, while close collaboration with employers reinforces learning in practical settings. This comprehensive system ensures that every apprentice has the resources, encouragement, and guidance needed to succeed—not just academically, but in their chosen careers.
At Salford City College, we’re not just teaching Maths and English; we’re breaking barriers and changing lives. The results from 2023/24 highlight the power of belief, innovation, and dedication. Together with our apprentices, we’re building a brighter future where no challenge is insurmountable, and every success story is worth celebrating.

APPRENTICESHIP SUCCESS STORIES
Jon Turner: From Apprehension to Achievement
“ I started an apprenticeship to change my career and build a solid knowledge base for a new trade. It offered the perfect combination of practical experience and learning to help me achieve my aspirations and set a clear direction for my future.”
Learning and Growth
The apprenticeship helped me meet my Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviour (KSBs) requirements. I gained valuable insights into being a service and maintenance engineer, understanding both the technical and practical aspects. Applying this knowledge in the workshop allowed me to build confidence and refine my skills. Additionally, I learned how to present myself professionally, both in college and at work.
Overcoming Maths Challenges
Maths wasn’t my strength at school, but revisiting it during the apprenticeship has significantly boosted my confidence. The tailored support from tutors helped me break down problems into manageable steps, and with consistent effort, I was able to understand and succeed. This experience has completely changed my perspective on learning maths.
Balancing Life as an Adult Learner
Returning to education after 20 years was daunting. Balancing full-time work, family responsibilities, and studies required careful planning and discipline. However, the rewards of gaining new skills and knowledge have made the effort more than worthwhile.
Impact on My Career
The skills I’ve gained are now part of my daily routine at work. Maths, in particular, plays a vital role in my job, and without improving my abilities in this area, completing essential tasks would have been challenging. My employers have been highly supportive, giving me time and resources for additional learning and revision, which has been invaluable to my progress.
Advice for New Apprentices
Don’t overthink challenges, and always ask for help if you need it. Tutors are there to support you, and taking advantage of their guidance can make a big difference. Trust the process and stay committed to your goals.
What’s Next
My next steps are to complete my apprenticeship, pass my End-Point Assessment, and achieve my qualifications as a gas engineer. This will open up opportunities to expand my knowledge further and build a successful career in the facilities sector. This journey has been transformative, and I’m excited about what the future holds.
ALISON BIRTWISTLE: BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND CAREER SKILLS
Why I Decided to Start an Apprenticeship
I started working for Bolton Council, where a Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care was required. This apprenticeship was a great way to meet the requirement while gaining practical experience and expanding my knowledge.
Choosing This Career Path
Caring for my disabled brother after his stroke gave me a deep understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable adults. After maternity leave, I wanted to return to meaningful work, and adult care felt like the right choice. Supporting vulnerable adults has always been a passion, and this apprenticeship allowed me to build a rewarding career.
Learning Maths and English
When I began, I realised I needed to complete Maths and English qualifications. Revisiting these subjects as an adult was challenging, but my tutor’s support helped me overcome difficulties and pass with confidence.
Programme Delivery and Support
The apprenticeship included face-to-face sessions and homework. My tutor visited every two weeks, offering invaluable support. Her guidance and encouragement were instrumental in helping me stay on track and manage challenges effectively.
Overcoming Barriers
Focusing on difficult topics was a challenge, but my tutor’s approach of building confidence on familiar areas first made a big difference. She also helped me manage anxiety, making the learning process more manageable.
Applying What I’ve Learned
Although I haven’t directly applied Maths and English to daily tasks, passing these qualifications boosted my confidence and reminded me of my abilities.
Support from My Employer
My employer’s support was key. They provided time off for study and assignments, which helped me balance work, learning, and family responsibilities.
Advice for Future Apprentices
Don’t overthink challenges. Be honest with your assessor and ask questions. Homework is essential for reinforcing knowledge, so embrace it. Seek help when needed and trust the process.
What’s Next for Me
I plan to continue supporting adults in care, a career I’m deeply passionate about. The apprenticeship has been transformative, and I’m proud of my achievements.
Looking Forward
