Did You Know?
If this referendum fails, state law prohibits the district from going to referendum for a full year. Athens School District will not be eligible for referendum until April 2024. 1 By that point, Athens School District will likely be in such significant debt that it won’t be able to recover. The Board of Education will be forced to consider consolidation or closing.

School consolidation does not mean merging the current elementary and middle/high school. Consolidation joins two separate school districts into one. 2

April’s referendum is an OPERATIONAL referendum. The revenue will be used to meet its financial obligations to retain quality staff, sustain educational opportunities, provide essential technology, and rebuild financial stability. 3 The revenue will be used to fund day-to-day operations of the school. Projects from the capital referendum (i.e. the track) in November 2022 are NOT included in the upcoming referendum.

You DO NOT stop paying school property taxes if a school district closes. Instead, school district lines are redrawn, and properties will now be included in the new school district’s tax base. Everyone still pays taxes but to a different school district at that district’s mill rate which may be higher! Athens School District currently has the lowest mill rate in Marathon County and 20th lowest rate in Wisconsin.4

Because I was paying less school property taxes as part of the Athens school district (since Athens has the lowest mill rate in our area), my taxes will now GO UP to align with what Edgar residents are paying, since the redrawn lines now includes my property.

Your school property taxes will go up no matter what! But voting YES on April 4th will keep your tax dollars in Athens , our schools open and our community thriving!
On April 4, 2023, The Athens School District is asking voters to approve an operational, non-recurring referendum. If this referendum fails, our school board will need to consider consolidation with another school district or closing the school doors entirely Because of state rules, our district cannot go to another referendum until Spring 2024, but by that time, it may be too late!
