Dedicated guidance counselors work patiently with each student to design a course of studies based on personal interests, talents, career, and college goals. Students are encouraged to become actively involved in cultural clubs, visual and performing arts, or service-oriented organizations that enable them to meet new friends, cultivate life-long relationships, and grow in confidence. Students are challenged physically and mentally via a competitive athletic program with several nationally ranked teams. These varied experiences help our students develop an appreciation for others, motivate teamwork and collaboration, heighten spirituality, refine leadership skills, and good sportsmanship.

Welcome to the Salesian family! Your student is about to embark on a journey to become a Salesian for life; we are in this together! We genuinely care about each and every one of our students.

You will find that our faculty, staff, and administration are present throughout our students’ high school journey. You are part of our family now, rich with diversity.

The mission of St. John Bosco, and now ours together, is to educate the children of the local community with reason, religion, and loving-kindness. Under the charism of St. John Bosco, and with your help, we can provide your student with a college preparatory experience through a HOME that nurtures, a SCHOOL that educates, a CHURCH that welcomes, and a PLAYGROUND where joy abounds and everyone belongs.

Many great things happen here on campus. We are studentcentric and our top priority is creating an unparalleled high school experience for our students.

Perhaps your student will take advantage of our many STEM course offerings in state-of-the-art third-floor labs. Maybe your student will find or further their talent through our outstanding Visual and Performing Arts department. It could be that your student becomes immersed in our literature, social science, or religious studies programs. Dates New Student

To ensure students are set up for success, Salesian requires placement tests for students seeking classes above their grade level in World Languages and Mathematics. Students who test in the top 25% on the High School Placement Test are automatically placed in English Honors and in Biology Honors.

PLACEMENT TEST DATES

WORLD LANGUAGE READINESS EXAM (SPANISH AND FRENCH)

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2025 (3:30PM - 4:30PM)

Who should consider taking this exam? Incoming students for the fall of 2025 who have studied Spanish or French, who have competency in either language, or wish to be placed in an advanced world language class.

ACCELERATED MATH READINESS EXAM

WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2025 (3:30PM - 4:30PM)

Who should consider taking this exam? Incoming students for the fall of 2025 who have completed a full year of Algebra and wish to be placed in an Accelerated Math course. All exams will take place in person at Salesian College Preparatory.

Students do not need to register to take these exams. Students should arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of the exam as we will start on time.

ORIENTATION/FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2025 (8:30AM-12:35PM)

The first day of school for freshmen and transfer students will be from 8:30am-12:35pm- August 13, 2025, on campus. Students MUST be in school dress code, as school photos will be taken and ID cards will be issued. Students should bring their fully charged laptop on this first day of school.

The day will begin in the gymnasium. Salesian students will attend a technology session in order to best prepare for their first full day of classes on Thursday.

Please review your student’s acceptance email to determine whether they received notification of Honors eligibility.

Academics

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Ninth-grade students enroll in a prescribed program of seven courses: English, Biology, World Language (French or Spanish), Mathematics, Physical Education, Religion, Visual and Performing Arts or the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science Pathway or the Visual and Media Arts Pathway.

A student’s World Language and/or Mathematics course level may be altered based on their performance on placement tests administered at Salesian in the spring.

GUIDANCE

All students meet with their academic guidance counselor during the first quarter. Parents can monitor student progress using our Schoology website, which tracks homework, test scores, and grades. Teachers use Schoology to communicate upcoming assignments and post important class materials.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAM

The Academic Success Program (ASP) is for a select group of freshmen students invited into the program. The class is taken in place of a World Language in the 9th grade. The class provides individualized and group instruction, academic goal setting, resource support, and study skills assistance for the transition to high school. Students will learn reading and test-taking strategies, organizational skills, expand their general knowledge, and practice writing across various curriculum areas. After their 9th grade year, students who need continued support can take the Study Skills class in grades 10, 11, and 12. Please review your student’s acceptance email to determine whether they are enrolled in our ASP program.

All enrolled ASP students are required to attend a four-week summer program on campus.

Student Support

COUNSELING & ADVISING

Academic Advising

All Salesian students meet regularly with a guidance counselor to select an appropriately challenging schedule of courses, and to ensure that all graduation requirements will be met. The academic advising team continues to support and counsel students as they navigate scheduling in subsequent years, standardized testing, and credit fulfillment.

Student Success Teams And Individualized Learning Plans

The Student Success Team (SST) is a team of community members within a student’s home, school, and local school district that work together to identify the strengths, growth areas, and opportunities of an identified student that will support the student’s academic, social, and/or emotional growth. At Salesian College Preparatory (SCP), the Student Success Team includes the following community members: the Principal and/or Associate Principal, Academic and/or Personal School Counselor, Director of Admissions, and Academic Success Program Coordinator.

Working together, the SST will review familysubmitted 504 Plans or IEP’s to propose the best accommodations that Salesian can offer. For more information about submitting information or initiating the process of a review for an individualized learning plan, please consult the school website under the “Parent Hub” tab.

Personal Counseling & Wellness Center*

The many changes during high school can cause challenges that may be resolved if explored in a nonjudgmental environment. Our personal counselors are available to students who are experiencing difficulties, including adjustment challenges, issues with peers, or stress with school. Our staff is available to offer support and guide students through the challenges of adolescence.

Students can request to visit with one of the personal counselors, or they may be referred by faculty, staff, or parents. While opportunities for counseling are available to all students, it is completely voluntary. In addition to personal counseling, there is a Wellness Center on campus intended to aid in early interventions for students experiencing social, emotional, or mental health

TECHNOLOGY

2025-2026 BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) PROGRAM

Student Responsibilities

1. Students are expected to bring their privatelyowned laptop to school every day, fully charged.

2. Students are responsible for hardware support and maintenance of their personal device.

3. Students must have all eBooks, apps, and accessories required by their teachers no later than September 1, 2025.

4. All contents and use of the student’s device are to conform to the mission and vision of SCP as well as the Acceptable Technology Use Policy.

5. SCP reserves the right to inspect the content of all laptops brought onto campus by students.

6. Students are to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy at all times (cf. Student-Family Handbook 2025–2026).

7. Students are to create a passcode/password on the laptop and keep the passcode/ password confidential.

8. Students should not share their passcode/ password with anyone.

9. Other than their parents or guardians, students are not to let anyone besides themselves use the laptop.

10. Students should not provide their personal information to anyone over the Internet.

Students are required to have a laptop with at least the following minimum specifications:

All students at Salesian College Preparatory (SCP) are required to have a laptop for the 2025 - 2026 school year.

DISCLOSURE

Salesian is a safe campus where theft or damage to personal property is not common; however, students should always secure their personal property in their backpacks, which they should keep with them. By bringing their own laptop or other devices to school, students and their parents/guardians accept full responsibility for damage that might occur to the laptop, as well as loss, or theft. Salesian College Preparatory is not responsible for the care, replacement, and/or repair of any device under any circumstances.

DRESS CODE

The faculty and administration of Salesian College Preparatory believe that appropriateness in attire has a positive influence on student work and that it enhances the learning environment for all involved.

We expect every Salesian student to be in dress code daily on campus, from arrival to departure. After school, students involved in co-curricular activities, including athletics, may wear team or club approved spirit-wear if the moderator or coach gives permission.

Here is what we expect every Salesian student to wear every day:

1. Approved Salesian collared shirt (polo or button up) and/or approved Salesian outerwear (sweatshirt, sweater, jacket, etc.), purchased through our partners: Lands’ End or the BSN Sideline Store.

2. Any solid color pants without rips (jeans, khakis, etc.) but no sweatpants, joggers, athletic, or track pants. Pants cannot have designs or lettering, tears, multiple colors, or be faded. Bermuda, jean or cargo style shorts to the knees (any solid color without rips or frayed bottoms) Students may wear a black, gray, or khaki uniform skirt, length to knee level or 3-inches below.

3. Closed-toe shoes with backs must be worn. Flipflops, crocs, slides, slippers and shoes with more than a 2-inch heel are not permitted.

Here is an expanded description of these items:

Everything purchased at Salesian’s Lands’ End store is approved for the school uniform.

• All visible shirts worn by students must be approved uniform wear, the school colors (red, black, white, or gray), and have the block Salesian branding.

• Jackets or coats worn by students must be approved uniform wear with the block Salesian branding. Non-Salesian outerwear cannot be worn inside or outside any school building, even if a student has a Salesian polo or sweatshirt underneath.

• Black hoodies purchased through the Booster Club may be worn as approved outerwear daily. No hoods of any kind may be worn while students are in the school buildings, classrooms, library, or cafeteria.

• Specific club or class sweatshirts (Salesian school branding) may be worn daily as approved outerwear.

Please keep in mind that shipments may take several weeks so it is highly recommended that you place orders early in the summer. Students are expected to be in full dress code on the first day of school. Dress code requirements are included in this information packet.

Success Student

The goal of Salesian discipline is self-discipline. Students are given the opportunity to develop good judgment and to make decisions within the limits of acceptable behavior.

MISCONDUCT

Our students are identified with Salesian College Preparatory, and the public perception of the school is formed by student behavior, both on and off campus. Consequently, students are accountable for their behavior both on and off campus.

Misconduct calls for disciplinary action. Behavior problems will be handled in the following sequence:

• Teacher

• Coach (if applicable)

• Athletic Director (if applicable)

• Dean of Students

• Principal

EXPECTATIONS

• The teacher is to be respectfully obeyed at all times.

• An admit slip from the Front Office is required when students seek admittance to class after the initial class bell has rung.

• Students are not to move desks, adjust blinds or windows, or touch the whiteboard unless asked to do so by the teacher.

• Students are not to stand or move around during class without the explicit permission of the teacher.

• When the bell announces the end of a period, students are to await the teacher’s signal before moving from the room.

• Food and beverages cannot be consumed in the library. Students found eating or drinking inside the library are subject to having their food or beverage confiscated and disposed of by a school authority. Water is always allowed anywhere on campus.

• Neither possession or smoking of tobacco products nor vaping is allowed at any time in school or within a two-block radius of the school. Students should not be in possession of any vaping paraphernalia at any time. Any infraction of this type will ordinarily result in suspension or expulsion.

• Students are encouraged to use the restroom during the passing period and break.

• Gum-chewing is not allowed anywhere on school property.

• Any use of alcohol or any other controlled substance will result in immediate disciplinary and/or police action. Expulsion may result if Salesian students are involved.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Cell Phone Usage (including voice, text messaging, use of the camera, or social media): To prevent disruption in class, students may NOT use cellular phones during class time. During passing periods and lunch, students may use their cell phones in an appropriate manner.

Please keep in mind the following in regard to the use of students’ personal cell phones:

• If a teacher deems it necessary to use the cell phone in the classroom as an acceptable educational tool, then students must follow the instructions given to them in the classroom for the use of their phones.

• In the case of an illness or an emergency during the school day, students must ask a teacher, administrator, or staff member for permission to use their phones to contact home.

• No student may use any type of electronic device (cell phone, laptop, Apple watch, etc.) during an exam or quiz unless given specific instructions to the contrary by the teacher.

• If asked, a student must hand over his or her phone to the teacher, staff member or administrator immediately, and without complaint. Parents/Guardians will be notified if and when this action is taken.

• If Parents/Guardians need to contact their student, we ask that they call the main office instead of calling/texting the student while they’re in class.

Failure to comply with any of the above stipulations may result in confiscation of the device.

Life Student

There is never a dull moment in the life of a Salesian student. From clubs and sports teams to international trips and service opportunities, Salesian students have endless opportunities to be active and grow as individuals.

Campus Ministry

Visual and Performing Arts

Salesian offers a variety of classes and activities for students who want to be creative. Study in the exciting Visual/Media Arts Pathway, get involved in a theatrical performance, join our popular choral group, discover the world of music in our school band, or express yourself through dance or art. Campus Ministry Team (CMT) members express, through their faith-based emphasis on service, our Salesian commitment to serve youth and those in need. CMT students are the heart of many of our school’s community-focused activities. Student Leadership and Ministry (SLAM)

Retreats

Every year, each student takes part in a class retreat. The class retreat is designed to cultivate community and encourage students to explore their faith more fully. Scan to learn more about retreats.

At Salesian College Preparatory, SLAM is the collective form of student leadership and ministry. The mission of SLAM is to create a culture for good, a lever to serve the greater school community. Clubs

Over 40 clubs are offered at Salesian College Preparatory and reflect the diverse nature of our student population - enabling students to follow their passion in different areas of interest. New clubs are formed by students each year! Club Fair Day takes place during the first few weeks of school so students can sign up. Clubs include Chess, the National Honor Society, Hiking, Art, Lego, Diversity, and Robotics, to name a few. Scan to explore more about clubs at Salesian.

Global Citizenship

Service Learning

In order to instill in our students the importance of volunteerism, investing in one’s community, and giving back, each of our students must fulfill their personal service commitments throughout the academic year. Scan to explore how our students and faculty outreach to the community.

Athletics

Salesian College Preparatory has a well-deserved reputation as the “Home of Champions.” Since 2000, the Salesian Athletic Program has earned six California State Titles, six NorCal Championships, 27 North Coast Section Team Championships, seven North Coast Section Individual Championships, and 78 League Championships. The Salesian Pride fields 15 teams across 13 sports with 25 competition levels (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen) across 3 seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring). Salesian students experience learning that extends beyond the classroom. Throughout their high school experience, students engage with different cultures, absorb new perspectives, and gain skills that prepare them to make a positive impact as global citizens. By being part of a diverse student body, students learn to respect cultures, languages, religions, and traditions other than their own.

International Trips

International Trips are offered to students every year. Past trips have included visits to France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, Belize, and New Zealand, to name a few.

Exchange ProgramQuebec

Students who are enrolled in French language classes have an opportunity to enjoy a weeklong trip to Quebec, meeting students at another Salesian School in Canada.

International Host Family Opportunities

INTERNA TIONALLY KNOWN

SCP is an International school and we have hosted students from ten different countries. There are opportunities for families who are interested in hosting an international student.

Academic Assistance

Tutoring

Faculty are available Monday - Thursday after school for tutoring until 3:30 PM.

Flex Periods

Twice a week, students will have a 30-minute Flex period built into their daily schedule. Flex periods are intended to provide extra time for academic assistance, offer opportunities for enrichment, or provide meeting time for clubs and co-curricular activities.

Salesian Café

The Café opens at 7am Monday - Friday for students who arrive early to school.

PRIDE DEN

Salesian College Preparatory provides Salesian students with an after-school indoor space that is a quiet area to study or an area to hang out. Students can enjoy healthy snack options and classic items, both hot and cold. The Pride Den is the after-school place to be!

Som Saengsourith, Chef and owner of SOM-Thing Special Catering, prepares home-cooked meals with simple and seasonal ingredients. To enhance our program, she provides fresh, locally sourced, and culturally responsive meals, celebrating the diversity of our student body. Salesian takes pride in serving meals with sustainable, ecofriendly practices.

Students may purchase a delicious breakfast, snacks, and hot lunches through an online menu program - “MealManage.”

• Parents will receive a welcome email to set up an account on the dining platform.

• Monthly menus, ordering, and payments can be made on the parents’ account page.

Family Service Program (FSP)

Salesian College Preparatory has established a Family Service Program (FSP) as a way for families to be involved with school events by volunteering, financial support, and community building. Without family support, many of the school’s events would not happen.

Each family is expected to offer volunteer service throughout the

FSP requirements for each family (not per student) are:

• (FSP 1) Work at one large event - all day or evening (i.e., Project Santa, Crab Feed, Service Day Driver, Athletic Booster all-day events, etc.)

• (FSP 2) Work at least one other “smaller” event or activity (i.e., Dance, Sporting Event)

Attend ONE grade-level evening meeting per year:

• 9th Grade: Meeting with School Counselor, October

• 10th Grade: Meeting with School Counselor, October

• 11th Grade: Meeting with Guidance Director, September: College Information Night

• 12th Grade: Senior Parent Meeting regarding Graduation activities: February

FSP service opportunities include activities such as:

• Athletic Events: Work with the Booster Club at Fall, Winter, and Spring sporting events, including CYO track meets; work at the concession stand/Snack Shack by setting up, selling, and cleaning up; monitor the ticket gate, assist with parking, etc.

• School Events: Volunteers are needed to work at school fundraisers such as the Crab Feed (January) or Mother’s Day Mass and Brunch (May), assist with dances and class retreats, chaperone field trips, or be a driver for Service Day, facilitate Project Santa, etc.

Parents/Guardians are required to register online for the Family Service Program by September 1st (see website for details).

• All financial assistance from Salesian (including scholarships) will be put on hold until FSP registration is completed.

• There is an “Opt Out Fee” option for families who decline to participate in FSP and agree to pay $500 instead.

• If a family does not show up for, or cancels their volunteer assignment less than 48 hours before the event, they will incur a $250 non-participation fee for each assignment that is unfulfilled.

PLEASE NOTE: It is solely the responsibility of the parent/guardian to actively pursue (FSP) volunteer opportunities at Salesian.

Program Transportation

Salesian offers students van shuttle transportation service to and from school throughout the Bay Area on a daily basis.

We have a fleet of 8 passenger vans that are maintained by Salesian and operated by parent volunteer drivers. We are proud to offer our students and their families this service. Your student can look forward to being picked up in one of our Salesian vans every morning and afternoon.

If you are interested in signing your student up for this program, we ask that you complete the form prior to July 15, 2025. There is limited availability and space is on a first-come, first-served basis. Once we finalize the numbers, we will provide you with the schedule of pick-up and drop-off times to best accommodate our families.

On the following page is the schedule for 2024-2025. The shuttle will leave from Salesian College Preparatory 30 minutes after school is dismissed and will return via the same route. The cost per semester will be $800, paid in advance. If you choose to pay the entire year in advance, the cost will be $1,400 for a savings of $200.
