Aron Sherriff

As he has rolled through the year winning one major Australian title after another, the Broadbeach BC star has treated us all to some brilliant displays of lawn bowls. To top off his achievements, BA recently named him in the Jackaroos squad after a 10 month break from international duty.

In May, Aron starred with the Moama Steamers at BPL15, being named as MVP for a record 5th time. In June he took out the Australia Open singles title for an extraordinary fourth time. He then backed this up with a win in Tweed Heads at the Australian Indoor Championships. Following that, it was win in the Golden Nugget Invitational Singles.

“I think my form this year just comes down to the fact that I’m in a really good place with my bowls at the moment. I’m enjoying the events that I choose to play in,” he said. “Winning my first Aussie Indoor was probably the highlight. Although winning a 4th Australian Open title and my 2nd Nugget are also extremely satisfying.”

When he steps onto the green, Aron uses a couple of different Henselite models, depending on the surface. “The Dreamline XG is the most versatile bowl on the market today. I use it 95% of the year, however on slower tracks or some carpet surfaces I like to use the Tiger II as it gives me a little extra draw which I enjoy.”

In early November Aron notched up his 250th game at the Bowls Premier League. This is as many as Moreton Bay Pirates and the Sydney Lions have played as teams. Now he is looking forward to being back in action with the Jackaroos squad after a break which allowed him to spend more time with his family and focus on why he loves the game of bowls. We look forward to watching him out on the green once again in the green & gold.

has had an undeniably stellar year in 2022.

Going the extra mile with Tongkat Ali in Australia

There are plenty of herbal supplements out there in Australia but there is one herb that captures global attention in recent years including medical experts and scientists from around the world. As demand for natural remedies recorded steady growth during pandemic, Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma Longifolia) appears as the best herb known to mankind since its first discovery in the early 1800s during the golden era of the British Empire in Asia.

Backed by more than 300 studies and clinical tests on humans, Tongkat Ali has long been a subject of interest from men seeking ways to improve vitality. In fact, it has been used for centuries to revitalize health in Malaysia.

Today, it’s making its way into Australia. Here is what you should know.

Whilst Tongkat Ali’s claim to fame as a natural aphrodisiac in the early 90s still fuels current interest in Australia, latest clinical tests validate the earlier findings by MIT scientists that this plant is indeed a “Tree That Cures Hundred Diseases”

The range of Tongkat Ali’s health benefits has been clinically tested and proven in areas such as testosterone, libido and sperm motility, muscle strength, sports endurance, mood, dopamine and others. The good news is that scientists found equal benefits on women too.

Now, if you are wanting extra strength in bowling, or other leisure sports activities, Tongkat Ali is your ideal energy booster and pre-workout companion. Studies have shown notable increase in grip strength in women and men between 40 – 60 years after taking Tongkat Ali for four weeks.

The adaptogen anabolic properties from Tongkat Ali is safe and tested on daily dosages between 200mg to 400mg over 4 to 12 weeks period. Whilst some have been taking Tongkat Ali for years without any side effects or reported deaths, most sports amateurs and fitness enthusiasts in Australia are using Tongkat Ali to enhance sports performance.

Meanwhile, most Australians pose a big questiondoes Tongkat Ali disrupt hormonal balance?

If you are in experiencing low hormonal balance, particularly low-testosterone symptoms – an inevitable circumstance as you cross the 40 to 50 years of age, Tongkat Ali is one of the best herbal supplements in Australia that benefits your endocrine system. Imagine a single herbal supplement delivering benefits to more than 10-20 hormones in your endocrine system. This could be an answer to an antiaging miracle pill that you have been searching for.

There are few popular Tongkat Ali brands in Australia, but do watch out for quality Tongkat Ali supplements that are clinically tested. AKARALI Tongkat Ali is the only Tongkat Ali supplement that has the most clinical tests (i.e 26 clinical tests in total), spanning more than 20 years of research and development.

As Australian consumers demand more clinically tested products, brands such as AKARALI provides the most potent Tongkat Ali in Australia that are clinically tested using its US-patented Physta® standardized hot-water extract.

The finest ingredient from single-origin Tongkat Ali in Malaysia has been one of many features that delivers the best Tongkat Ali experience amongst Australians who are seeking the best Tongkat Ali that works.

If you are curious to try Tongkat Ali and how it may benefit your health goals, you can purchase directly BuyNatural Marketplace, the best one stop natural & organic online store in Australia!

THE GREAT MIGRATION SAFARI - BIRTHING SEASON

9th to 20th February 2023

Cost AU$16,979 per person sharing – all inclusive (see below)

PLANTATION LODGE, NGORONGORO

A morning game drive out of the park to Plantation Lodge – set in a working farm and on a high bluff, the lodge is very comfortable, elegant and personable – one of the best addresses in Northern Tanzania.

This will be our base for two nights as we make a very early start for our full day trip into the Ngorongoro Crater. Abounding with lion, buffalo and many other species, including rhino and elephant, this is a day not to be forgotten.

Standing at 2236m above sea level, Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and is surrounded by very steep walls rising 610m from the crater floor. Covering an area of 259 square kms, it is considered to be one of the Wonders of the Natural World and is a veritable haven for wildlife.

WILDLIFE EXPLORER, TANZANIA

With a maximum group size of 12, in our own exclusive luxury camps in Tarangire National park and in the Serengeti – this is a very special safari. Sean Lues will be accompanying this trip, passionate and with over twenty years of experience as a safari guide, he will help make this trip a journey to remember forever.

We spend three days in the baobab-strewn Tarangire National Park – a haven for wildlife, plus the opportunity for a night drive and a walk in the bush.

We will spend a full day in the incredible Ngorongoro crater, visit a Maasai boma and pass through the Oldupai Gorge and its museum, showcasing the findings of early mankind. We finish up on a massive high in the Serengeti to witness the incredible phenomenon of the Great Migration, when the million plus wildebeest and zebra pause for a while on the short grass plains for the birthing period. During this period hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves and zebra foals join the herds over a three to four week time span. Olerai, Arusha. Resting at the foot of Mount Meru, the sprawling city of Arusha is known as the safari capital of northern Tanzania and is where we spend our first night.

OSUNYAI WILDERNESS CAMP, TARANGIRE

Osunyai Wilderness Camp, our exclusive Camp set on the edge of the wilderness zone, is situated close to the Silale wetland – prime elephant & buffalo habitat and in the heart of big game country. The camp is set beneath mature acacia trees facing the rising sun.

The baobab-strewn Tarangire is a haven for wildlife and has an extremely rich game viewing potential: large herds of elephants can be seen, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. Osunyai and nearby Silale are fantastic habitats to view predators and prey in an unsurpassed setting. Close liaison with our driver-guide will ensure the choice of daily activities match our mood and pace. A wide range of wildlife and nature activities are offered : in addition to the traditional Game drives, there are Game walks accompanied by our own armed walking guide. A night game drive will be arranged, as well as a Masai cultural experience ( ‘Olpul’ and medicine walk).

DULANA, SERENGETI

Depart for the Serengeti Plains – game drive and picnic lunch on the way. A stop at Olduvai can be arranged, one of the most important paleoanthropological localities in the world. Gaze over the stark Oldupai Gorge, from where Louis and Mary Leakey had their research centre and currently houses a fascinating museum. The days of heavy canvas hunting camps set for the likes of Roosevelt and Hemingway were almost over until photographic safaris gained popularity. The luxury mobile tented camps are tasteful, extremely comfortable, and above all mobile, allowing freedom to follow the movements of the great migratory herds. The tents, which have been custom designed, offer the very highest level of comfort and mobility.

Dulana sits on the edge of ‘Hidden Valley’ a little-known depression on the southern plains of the Serengeti, on the edge of the off-road driving area, allowing immediate access onto the short grass plains, where Cheetah are abundant and Lion prides establish territory close to camp and the surrounding woodland. The camp takes advantage of the uninterrupted views across the shallow valley, where different species of game can be spotted from the comfort of the accommodation tents.

OUR FINAL DAY TOGETHER

Spend two nights in Arusha prior to the safari and a night in Arusha on the way back. This allows time for some local exploration and shopping – anything from exquisite Tanzanite jewellery to local materials.

Africa is very much worth a longer stay! So why not extend your journey with an endless array of options to suit you. Off the coast of Tanzania are the Spice Islands of Zanzibar; gorillas and chimpanzees abound in neighbouring countries and relatively close by are must-see destinations like Victoria Falls & Cape Town. Contact us for the detailed itinerary and to book your spot on this very limited space safari!”

Which Equity Release solution is right for you?!

With rising living costs and an increasing desire amongst baby boomers to take financial control of their retirement, there is a growing interest in Equity Release products to help fund financial goals.

Fortunately, there are several ways you can access the wealth accumulated in your home when you need it. The available options generally fall in to two categories –debt-based and debt-free strategies.

A debt-based option is a loan product, where you borrow against the equity in your home. Repayments are not required, and instead the interest charged by the provider will be capitalised against the loan over time, adding interest to the loan amount you have borrowed. Such loans are not required to be repaid until you sell your home, or you pass away.

Debt-based solutions come in different forms – you may borrow the funds via a reverse mortgage product offered by private providers or take up the loan scheme offered by the Government (previously referred to as the Pension Loan Scheme). The amounts available via a reverse

mortgage and the Government loan scheme may be less than via a debt-free strategy and the interest rate charged will be higher than traditional home loan rates, given the nature of the debt.

A debt-free option is not a loan, and as you don’t borrow money, there is no capitalising interest charges over time. Repayments don’t apply, and instead the entitlement of the provider is capped so you can protect a portion of the equity in your home into the future. You can also sell your home at any time, or the provider will receive their entitlement when you pass away, and your home is sold. Whichever option you may be considering, it is a big decision with lasting ramifications, and it is important that you make the right decision for your circumstances.

Homesafe Wealth Release® is the popular debt free equity release solution for homeowners to access the wealth in their homes. Homesafe is not a reverse mortgage or a loan product and is specifically designed to provide protections for homeowners for the life of the arrangement.

For over 17 years, Homesafe (in partnership with Bendigo & Adelaide Bank) has provided a tried and tested solution which has assisted thousands of homeowners by focusing on providing a safe and secure equity release option.

10 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

As the popular alternative, the Homesafe option is a part sale property contract, where a homeowner receives a lump sum cash amount today and in return agrees to sell a capped share of the future sale proceeds of the home. Homesafe will only receive its share of the sale proceeds, usually many years down the track, when the homeowner chooses to sell or after they pass away.

A special and unique feature of the Homesafe Contract ensures if the homeowner sells earlier than anticipated, due to a unique feature, Homesafe will often receive less than the agreed capped share and the balance is returned to the Homeowner at time of sale.

John and Sandra

Wanting to avoid debt was the reason John and Sandra* approached Homesafe in March of this year. John had worked as an insurance assessor for many years before being made redundant during covid lockdowns. Given his age he has found it difficult to find another job. Sandra is still working part time to help pay the bills and they feel their levels of financial stress have risen dramatically over the last couple of years. When they saw the Homesafe advertisement on television, they started their own research into what equity release options may be able to assist them. Their home is very important to them, and they want to stay put as long as they can. When they investigated equity release solutions, it became very clear to them that they did not want to replace home loan debt with reverse mortgage debt, so Homesafe was their preferred option. When John and Sandra met with a Homesafe Specialist, in the privacy of their own home, they were pleased to discover they could use the equity in their home when they needed it the most – without the need to downsize just to pay off their debts.

Many thousands of Homesafe customers have used the amount released with Homesafe to pay out loans, which in turn has removed the stress of being in debt and the freedom of no longer struggling to make loan payments one month to the next.

How can I make an enquiry with Homesafe?

The team at Homesafe offer personalised service by phone initially, and a no-obligation meeting with a Homesafe Mobile Specialist in the comfort of your home is organised to ensure you can receive all the information you – and your family – need to make an informed decision. For more information on how Homesafe^ has helped baby boomers to payout debt for over 17 years, contact Homesafe on 1300 307 059 or visit www.homesafe.com.au.

Science. Compasion. Action.

There are people in our community who are struggling with their mental health. 1-in-5 of us will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year, in Australia that’s around 5 million people. And roughly 60% of these people won’t seek help.

A gift in your will can light the way to a mentally healthier future "When you lose somebody, you want to give back; you want to do something about it. We didn't feel like we had the skills to do anything ourselves, so we were looking for an organisation that could do the work on our behalf. Black Dog Institute helps people recover from mental illness by developing programs to prevent suicide and helping to remove the stigma around mental illness. I would give anything to have my son here with us today, so on behalf of him, we want to try and help other people that may be in a similar situation."

Robyn, caring supporter and Luminary

Mental health issues surround us, but mainly go unnoticed. Black Dog Institute is undertaking ground-breaking research - leading the way through prevention and treatments, which needs our support. By leaving a portion of my estate to the Institute, I will be allowing their worthwhile work to continue into the future.”

Michael, caring supporter and Luminary

Including a gift in your will, gives the Institute the resources to invest in bigger, bolder, evidence-based research. After caring for loved ones, as little as 1% of a residual estate can make a difference to the future of mental health in Australia. Momentous occasion for little hero Theia

Before little Theia could even celebrate her first birthday, she was diagnosed with pleuropulmonary blastoma – a type of childhood lung cancer that forms in the tissues of the organ.

Theia was admitted to her local hospital in Townsville where doctors removed part of her lung, before sending her to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane for further treatment. She underwent surgery to remove three quarters of her right lung, and nine rounds of chemotherapy, and at nineteen months old, she beat her cancer.

During her time in hospital, Theia’s older brother, Karter, spent plenty of time in Kidzone – the dedicated playroom run by Children’s Hospital Foundation in Queensland Children’s Hospital – which gave both him and Carmela some respite from the hospital environment.

While Theia is now in remission with no evidence of disease, she still requires scans every three months to ensure the cancer doesn’t return.

At the end of her treatment, when Theia was given the all clear by doctors, she was able to mark the huge milestone by ringing the chemotherapy bell at Queensland Children’s Hospital.

I honestly don’t know what I would have done without Children’s Hospital Foundation - they were just amazing.

From the Cuddle Carers who looked after Theia when I needed a moment to myself, to the iPads and digital loans they provide to Karter to keep him entertained. They were true lifesavers. Carmela, Theia’s Mum.

BEING A ROYAL OR BEING ROYAL

That is the question, as The Great Bard once wrote, ‘’TO BE OR NOT TO BE’’ that is the question. Does the House of Royal Windsor have an answer to that question? A Royal is born to be of service to their people, in any manner or aspect their Liege asks or requires of them. On reflection, King Charles could strip his son Prince Harry of his title, relegating him to the status of commoner, and what a sadness that would be. But I digress, back on topic Tony…

I would, if given the choice of being a ‘’Royal Windsor’’ or a Royal fella, what path would I take? Mmmmm…

Let me start with being a Tony Windsor. Well for a start, I would need to be Anthony Windsor, Tony; a bit common. Now I’m not too sure Anthony Windsor would take to the totally planned life, and lifestyle of a Windsor. A daily diary of duties and appointments, mapped out day after day, year after year, who I can and can’t see, where I can and can’t go. To be of service I love. So that aspect I would be totally fine with. To be able to assist the various charities, and those that need help would also fit my liking. But, ha… there is always a but. My Anthony Windsor would find it difficult not to be able to have thoughts of my own, to never be articulated, unless in privacy. The need to ‘’fence sit’’ on all aspects of life, politically and diplomatically. This Anthony Windsor would find it very difficult.

I have the greatest of respect for The Windsor Royals, to live, to function in the world’s spotlight I can only reflect. GOD BLESS THEM…

The Tony Windsor I know needs to be more ‘’hands on.’’ He needs to have an opinion, albeit a considered one, he needs to be emotional and passionate, traits a Royal Windsor must hide.

Tony learnt many many years ago that growth without pain, sharing and a valued mentor to assist in his journey are essential. If not, the essences that fertilise our humanities will be ‘bottled up,’ dying on the vine so to say. We…..he needs to accept his flaws, find the courage to restore his faith, make amends that will ease the road ahead. A great old friend, and a man who has my

admiration, champion Ros Barassi once mentioned to me a thought, mantra that has been with me since that moment. ‘’If it is to be, it is up to me.’’ I learnt that, we live only in either ‘’fear or faith.’’ So… my love, thoughts, support, for those Royal Windsors will endure. GOD BLESS THEM.

But, there’s that ‘’but’’ again….I will be very happy and content to just be a Royal fella to my family, friends and country, one day at a time… STORY COURTESY OF TONY BONNER AM

TONY BONNER AM has appeared in an eclectic mix of critically acclaimed films, television shows and live theatre during his phenomenal career, which includes ANZACS, THE LIGHT HORSEMAN, QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER AND THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER. He was awarded both the Sammy and Penguin Awards for ‘’The Best Single Performance by an actor, in the 1978 Television Movie ‘’END OF SUMMER.’’ Tony was also nominated for ‘’The Best Actor in a supporting role’’ by The Australian Film Institute in 2003 for the movie ‘’LIQUID BRIDGE’’ and received a ‘’Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Tony was appointed a ‘’Member of the order of Australia’’ (AM) in 2017 for his services to the performing arts as an actor, surf lifesaving and to the community through charitable organisation.

HAS THE PASSING OF THE QUEEN PROMPTED THE AWESOME FOURSOME TO CONSIDER A RECONCILIATION?

After two years of no contact, it appears that the passing of Queen Elizabeth II may have brought the estranged brothers, William and Harry back together. It was the reunion the world had been waiting for.

On the 11th September, 2022 just three days after the Queen’s death. Mourners outside Windsor Castle were thrilled to see the ‘’Fab Four’’ make a surprise appearance. The foursome were met with thunderous applause by the crowds as they reunited and walked together to greet mourners and wellwishers while viewing floral tributes to their late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

According to a Royal source, Prince William offered an olive branch to Prince Harry and Meghan and invited the couple to view the floral tributes alongside himself and his wife Kate.

Fortunately, Harry and Meghan accepted the invitation, it was the first time the ‘’Fab Four’’ were seen in public together since March 2020. The reunion was an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time. However, Royal supporters are hoping that the joint appearance at Winsor Castle is an indication that the rift between Harry, Meghan and the Royal Family may be slowly coming to an end.

The Royal foursome also attended a family dinner at Buckingham Palace three days later. William and Harry reunited again on the 14th September, 2022 in honour of their grandmother, while walking side by side in procession escorting the Queen’s coffin on her journey from Buckingham Palace to lie in state at Westminster Hall. Only time will tell if Princes William and Harry will be able to navigate their differences, however Royal experts are hoping that the aftermath of the Queen’s death will result in a reconciliation between William and Harry. Unfortunately, according to recent media reports the impending release of Prince Harry’s biography titled ‘’SPARE’’ could derail a reconciliation and cause irretrievable damage to the Monarchy.

Professional earwax removal

At Earworx we work with Australian’s every day to relieve them of ear wax build up and the associated discomfort, hearing loss and pain this can cause. We take great pride in our exceptional service and our caring and compassionate approach to ear health.

Ear wax removal is a delicate process and special training is required to perform this procedure. Earworx is a service that proudly employs only registered nurses who are qualified in the process of Micro Suction and Aural Hygiene

Many of us know the disorienting feeling of not being quite right when one of our senses is not working correctly. Whether it’s a sinus infection or head cold impacting your sense of smell or getting shampoo in your eyes in the shower! It can severely impact your ability to enjoy life.

The same goes for any loss of hearing. As an example, more than one third of the elderly people in our community suffer from excessive ear wax and this can have a significant impact on their day to day life, and their ability to hear and communicate effectively.

Through our work with patients across Australia, we know how uncomfortable and inconvenient hearing loss from a build-up of ear wax can be. We specialise in professional ear wax removal and use dry, safe and effective micro suction technology to gently and easily remove wax. This is the same technique that is preferred by Ear Nose and Throat specialists.

Some people are more likely to experience a build-up of ear wax than others. These include people with narrow, hairy or curvy ear canals, who wear hearing aids, who use cotton buds or other objects such as ear plugs or ear bud headphones, who work in dusty or dirty environments or people with a hereditary disposition to wax impaction.

A build-up of ear wax can feel like blockage or fullness in your ears and can also lead to hearing loss or tinnitus. If you or an older member of your family are experiencing any of these symptoms, our

friendly and professional registered nurses can assist you. We are passionate about ear wax removal; it’s our core business and what we do best.

The hearing-impaired community in Australia deserve to be treated with respect, care and dignity. These Australians work hard, care for families, and as such it is important that they experience the best quality of life that is available to them.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption to Earworx services however we are now open with strict mitigation strategies in place to reduce the risk of transmission to both staff and clients. If you would like to know more about these please visit us at www. earworx.com.au.

Let us help Australians to be able to hear, communicate, and as such fully participate in our community activities – make a booking at Earworx today.

#BPL16: MELBOURNE PULSE GO BACK-TO-BACK

The Melbourne Pulse have made history at #BPL16 becoming the third team ever to go back-to-back following a straight sets win over the Adelaide Pioneers in the grand final.

The Dandenong Club franchise ended the evening session undefeated as they joined four other teams to have claimed multiple BPL championships.

Following a tough morning where Barrie Lester, Ellen Ryan and Gary Kelly claimed just one victory from their three encounters, the trio would enter the finals with a double chance in second spot on the table behind only the Moreton Bay Pirates.

The solitary victory for the squad would come over crosstown rivals Melbourne eXtreme, who’s event was effectively ended with the defeat as they would fall behind the Moama Steamers with just one round to play.

Melbourne would take on Brisbane in the qualifying final for a place in the decider and claimed a straight sets win before sealing a dominant victory over Adelaide to

claim the historic title.

Adelaide themselves enjoyed a wonderful day, finishing fourth and falling in just one match in the final home and away rounds to the Steamers in a tiebreak.

The teams would reconvene in the first game of the finals as the Pioneers came from a set down to take the match in a tiebreak before putting on a sensational display to account for the Sydney Lions as they progressed to the final three.

Katelyn Inch, Wayne Ruediger and Scott Thulborn would meet the Pirates for a place in the decider and despite losing the opening set, the Pioneers would force a tiebreak with an end to spare in the second set.

In the breaker, Thulborn was tasked with pulling off a perfect draw to send his team through to the grand final and he nailed it to sink the parochial Pine Rivers crowd.

In their fifth BPL final each, Thulborn and Ruediger were unable to claim the elusive title as the Pulse maintained their stranglehold on the event.

The next Bowls Premier League will be held in Moama from February 20-24, 2023.

When actions speak louder than words

Ray Martin AM

Twiggy and Nicola Forrest gave twenty million dollars to the Randwick Children’s Hospital the other day. Twenty million. This will help build one of the world’s great research centres for kids’ cancer.

The mining magnet and his wonderful wife are, of course, amongst our richest families. But still, the Forrests’ don’t have to give away their tens of billions of dollars, as they have promised to do.

This latest act of public kindness by Twiggy and Nicola –and there have been many from this remarkable WA couple -set me thinking about Australians and philanthropy. And to be honest, we’re not very good at it, nothing like the Americans.

Rich folk in Australia tend to sit on their wallets, often pretending that they’re anonymously philanthropic. I hate to say it, but usually they’re not. Of course, there are fantastic exceptions to that general rule.

The Humpty Dumpty family, for example, is uncommonly generous. And our supporters don’t often move amongst the billionaire set.

Maybe it’s because Paul Francis and the Humpty team give people who are inclined to donate to charity a lot of good reasons to be generous. Maybe it’s because when it comes to babies and children we really are moved to do something. We want to make a difference.

And you do. One of the great mantras of my old friend and mentor, Professor Fred Hollows, the legendary eye doctor, was, “The single quality that separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom, is that we have the capacity to care.”

The capacity to care!

In another lifetime I was the Chairman of the Fred Hollows Foundation for its first decade. I was also hosting the Nine Network programme, A Current Affair. I walked in my front door one night after the show and my house phone rang.

It was Dick Smith, who is an extraordinary Australian, and generous to a fault.

“G’day, Ray,” Dick said, “Are you still involved with Fred Hollows?” I said I was.

“Is it doing good work?” he asked.

I told him it was, it was doing exceptional work. (Still is.)

What I didn’t tell him was that we were having desperate trouble raising funds. In fact, we were going broke and starting to wonder how we were going to survive. It’s not easy getting Australian charity money to fix the eyes of cataract blind people in the Third World, especially when the great man (or woman) on whom it all depends, suddenly dies of cancer, as sadly Fred Hollows did thirty years ago.

Lauren, Humpty’s Junior Ambassador with Davey, the very first baby transported in Humpty’s Transport Incubator and Ray, Darwin 2021.

“So, how can I help?” I asked my friend, Dick. “Well,” he said matter-of-factly “I want to give you a million dollars!” I almost dropped the phone. Nobody had ever offered me that kind of charity bonanza before.

“Can I ask what’s prompted this incredible generosity, Dick?”

“Oh, my daughters were up in Nepal trekking and they dropped into the Hollows eye clinic, and they liked what they saw. We were talking about it around the dinner table tonight. So, Pip and I wondered if we could help the Foundation a bit.”

A bit? Surely, one of the all–time, great understatements. Today, there are more than eight million people who were cataract blind and feeling ‘useless’, who can now see their families, their friends and the world. Eight million people. And there’ll be many millions more whose lives are saved. And it almost certainly wouldn’t have happened without the generosity of Dick and Pip Smith.

The power of one, or two, people.

From similarly humble beginnings, Humpty keeps on changing the lives of babies and their families for the better because so many of our supporters care.

In the earliest days, amongst our most significant benefactors were a colourful couple named Ted and Dolly Knight. They came along to one of our Humpty dinners, just to have a look. Over the next decade or so, they never stopped coming, and they never stopped helping the kids in hospital. Ted and Dolly were simply the best and kindest people.

A few years ago, a wonderful woman named Lorna Blackwood, who had been a nurse and an airline hostie, happened to read a copy of our Good Egg magazine in her doctor’s waiting room. Lorna liked what she saw, got in touch through her family barrister and then left an amazingly generous gift to Humpty in her will. The sad thing is, we never got to meet this incredible lady to say thank you.

But, every day kids in hospital benefit from Lorna Blackwood’s philanthropy. She was the first such benefactor to Humpty and her generous soul lives on.

There are so many more people, mining companies and financiers (too many to name) who have made it possible for our Humpty team to buy life-saving equipment for almost 500 hospitals and children’s clinics across Australia.

We thank you so much for caring. And, for changing the lives of these sick children and their families. It’s astonishing what the philanthropic spirit can do. We need more of it.

Please donate today For more than 30 years Humpty has been keeping families together by providing lifesaving equipment where it’s most needed. This Christmas, give the gift of family and help sick children recover close to home. Your Legacy for the Future

You may be painfully aware of the devastating impacts of dementia.

You might have seen the heartbreaking way it affects those living with the disease or watched someone you love lose so much because of it.

What you may not know is that dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia yet remains one of the most challenging and misunderstood conditions. That is why Dementia Australia exists to support every individual impacted by the condition.

For Dementia Australia to be able to continue our vital work, we have established the ‘Memory Keepers’ group. Memory Keepers are a special group of like-minded supporters who have chosen to leave a gift in their Will, so their memory can live on by creating a future where people impacted by dementia receive the care and support they choose. Critically, it could also advance research into better and more effective treatments for dementia, and ultimately, a cure.

Not everyone can support their preferred charities during their lifetime, but by becoming a Memory Keeper you can support the cause most important to you through a lasting legacy.

Your future gift could help make a world of difference to the life of someone like Tim. Tim was a committed family man, who loved cooking and ran a small successful business. But at the age of 51 he began making unusual mistakes. He’d put food away in the crockery drawers and came home with dings in his car. He’d forget to call work clients back and how to do simple math. His wife, Laura and daughter, Prue, noticed he was increasingly confused and overwhelmed.

After visiting his GP and undergoing test after test, Tim was diagnosed with younger onset dementia, just a year after his symptoms began. Tim can no longer drive, read, write or dress himself. He is easily flustered and has severe anxiety. He was forced to sell his business and their family home.

Prue has become Tim’s full-time carer so Laura could continue to work and support their family. Soon after, Tim received the help he needed to link him with a range of support services in his community. Counselling has helped with the mixture of emotions Tim and Laura were experiencing and education has helped Tim and his family understand his illness and decline. Prue described the day her family discovered that Dementia Australia existed as “Absolutely amazing”.

Your lasting legacy could help families like Tim’s and enables you to support a cause you hold dear beyond your lifetime.

NECK AND BACK PAIN

26 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Neck and back pain can range from mild, annoying aches to severe, disabling pain

While most spine pain occurs as a part of the normal degenerative ageing process-it can also be a warning sign of cancer, infection, autoimmune disease, or a structural problem causing pressure on the spinal cord/ nerves

WHY DOES THIS OCCUR?

Our spines are comprised of a number of joints around the spinal cord and nerves. As we age, changes occur as the joints wear out resulting in inflammatory processes such as osteoarthritis.

The joints and tissues can also become overgrown and compress a neural structure, which is called spinal stenosis.

Failure of the joints to hold the bones in position can result in slippage and deformity. These are common characteristics of conditions such as spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, or scoliosis.

WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN THESE DEGENERATIVE CHANGES CAUSE?

• Dull, burning, or sharp pain-which can be confined to a single spot or cover a large area.

• Arm/leg numbness or tingling

• Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from your neck and your arm.

• Sharp shooting pain that radiates from your lower back to your buttocks, and down your leg (sciatica)

• Stiffness in your neck or back

• Difficulties with walking and balance

• Difficulties with coordination

• Loss of bladder and bowel control, with weakness in both legs are important symptoms that require immediate medical attention.

HOW IS A DIAGNOSIS MADE?

You should see your general practitioner for a medical and physical exam. They may obtain a CT scan and /or an MRI scan to assess your spine. CT/MRI produces pictures of bones, joints, ligament, the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Sometimes other tests are needed such as bone scans and specialised x-rays.

27 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

HOW ARE BACK AND NECK PAIN TREATED?

If you experience back or neck pain it may simply improve with some rest. Over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may also help alleviate discomfort. Activity should be modified to avoid movement that exacerbates pain. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy are beneficial.

Low-impact exercise programs may improve range of motion, increase muscle strength, and improve flexibility and mobility, increase endurance, and improve pain. Weight loss and improving one’s core strength are also useful.

WHEN CAN A SURGEON HELP?

A surgeon can advise on further treatment if the above suggestions haven’t improved the pain and your quality of life.

Your surgeon can assess your imaging and recommend cortisone steroid injections that can alleviate some forms of neck, back, arm or leg pain.

An appropriate surgical operation can also significantly improve pain, mobility and quality of life.

WHAT DOES AN OPERATION INVOLVE?

Because symptoms, imaging findings and causative factors can vary significantly, a surgical procedure must be tailored for you.

A traditional spine surgery procedure involves an incision along the backbone. The surgeon moves muscle and soft tissue aside to gain access to the bones of the spine and the spinal cord.

Minimally invasive techniques involve a smaller incision and special microsurgical instruments, through which the surgeon operates on the spine. Minimally invasive techniques may be able to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of complications. These approaches allow the surgeon to trim

away overgrown bone, ligament and joint tissue to decompress the spinal cord and spinal nerve. Some operations (for example those that help control the conditions spinal stenosis or sciatica) employ a decompression technique and at times may also require a fusion. The latter involves a surgeon placing titanium screws and rods to stabilise the spine and cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse.

There are minimally invasive ways to perform this type of surgery, and can even encompass advanced technology such as GPS-like tracking systems and robotics. If performed for the right indications, surgery can be effective in 80-90% of patients.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY

Most patients are mobilised either on the same or following day of surgery, as early movement has been shown to be be beneficial.

You may be reviewed by a physiotherapist to provide advice on stretches, exercises and activities. Sometimes health professionals will design a rehabilitation program to meet your needs. The type of program will depend on the procedure you underwent and your level of mobility.

The goal of back and neck rehabilitation is to help you return to your highest level of fitness and independence and improve your overall quality of life.

Q & A WITH DR. PETER WILSON

B&L : Congratulations Peter on your extraordinary career. What position do you currently occupy at The Prince of Wales Hospital?

PETER : I am currently a consultant neurosurgeon.

B&L : Why did you become a neurosurgeon, and are other family members in the medical profession?

PETER : Yes both my parents are doctors, and I became a neurosurgeon because I have always been fascinated by the way our bodies work, especially the nervous system. I also find it extremely rewarding helping vulnerable people overcome complex situations, associated with brain and spinal surgery.

B&L : How long have you been associated with BrainSpine?

PETER : I joined BrainSpine in 2016, after I returned from the the United States, where I was fortunate to learn from Dr. Theodore Schwartz, who is a world leader in endoscopic skull

base surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York.

B&L : What are the benefits of belonging to the BrainSpine team?

PETER : There are many benefits associated with belonging to the BrainSpine Team, the main one being, all the neurosurgeons involved are dedicated to maintaining the highest level of clinical and operative care for their patients. Subsequently we all get on well and are supportive of each other.

It is a very comfortable environment.

B&L : What was your second option, if you were not successful in this field?

PETER : I would have become a scientist.

B&L : Are you married and how does your wife/partner deal with your work commitments and long hours?

PETER : Yes I am married and have two children, my wife is supportive and understands my work commitments.

B&L : What is your advice for a healthy mind and body?

PETER : A healthy diet with lots of vegetables, and consistency when exercising.

B&L : How do you relax when you are at home?

PETER : Home is very intense because I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old. I relax by being at work and focusing intensely on one task at a time.

B&L : How do you feel about COVID, and do you think the Government has dealt with COVID correctly, is there anything you would have done differently?

PETER : Yes I would have done a few things differently, however compared to other countries, I think Australia is doing very well.

B&L : What are your aspirations for the future and what legacy do you want to leave behind?

PETER : Maintain my focus to maximise the positive outcomes for my patients, and continue to teach the next generation of budding neurosurgeons.

Our Mission

At Surecell, we focus on the regenerative powers in our bodies

We use the power of platelets to encourage the body s natural healing process without resorting to medication or intrusive operating procedures

We adopt a holistic approach and seek to understand the way our body repairs itself and how we can best assist in this process

Leaders in Regenerative Medicine

Surecell specialises in the clinical application of autologous PRP and cell therapies

The Surecell group treats up to 1,000 patients per month, trains medical professionals from across the globe and creates educational material accessible to both patients and health workers

PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP)

What is PRP?

Our blood is made up of 93% red blood cells 6% white blood cells 1% platelets and plasma Platelets are best known for their function of blood clotting to stop bleeding Platelets, however, are much more significant than this, as human platelets are also a critical component in injury healing

How does PRP work?

The growth factors and platelets in the plasma promote cells to multiply and form new tissue accelerating and enhancing the healing process

PRP contains a much higher concentration of platelets than normal blood This means that higher concentrations of growth factors are being released into the injured area

When compared to cortisone injections PRP injections hold better results and last much longer While the effects of cortisone are rapid, they are often followed by a decline in condition PRP shows slower but greater long term improvement and less injury recurrence

What does the process involve?

After assessing you a nurse will take your blood (like a standard blood test) which will be spun in a centrifuge to isolate the plasma component

PRP is activated under a light Then, the PRP is injected directly into the site of injury The process will take around 45 minutes to an hour Local anaesthetic is injected 15 20 minutes before or at the same time with PRP injection depending on the injury

Construction is well underway on exciting new upgrades to Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge’s community facilities on the back of a record surge in enquiry from over-50s looking for the security and support that lifestyle resorts like this one offers.

Among the resort upgrades currently under construction are improvements to the community hall which will see the installation of a plush 60-seat movie cinema, an exclusive Milon gymnasium system, a heated indoor swimming pool, spa and other new activity rooms.

Palm Lake Group managing director Scott Elliott said, when complete, the value of the improvements would be in the vicinity of $5-6 million.

“With 44 years of history in developing and operating over-50s communities, it’s important to our family company to continue to spend money on updating our resorts’ community facilities,” Mr Elliott explained.

“In a nutshell, these upgrades reflect directly on re-sale prices for our homeowners. Our residents also take great pride in their communities and we want to encourage that and make them feel proud to host their visiting friends and family members in their respective resort grounds.”

Mr Elliott said Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge was his family’s first foray into over-50s community lifestyle resorts, purchased back in 1977. Since that time, Palm Lake Group now offers 28 locations across three states of Australia, including three greenfield sites that are currently in various stages of development approval. There are also six aged caring communities in the company portfolio.

“Community facilities have always been key to Palm Lake Resort’s market offering,” Mr Elliott said.

“We are definitely in the business of building impressive homes for modern over-50s but, more so, we are in the business of building great communities. A big part of this comes with providing on-site social and sporting facilities that allow our homeowners to come together and enjoy each other’s company.

“That might mean a meal with neighbours in one of our clubhouses, or a game of lawn bowls, or some mini golf with visiting family, or even an art class or music practise session in one of our specialist hobby rooms with likeminded neighbours.

“It’s important to note that we are always striving to improve and be better, to keep ourselves ahead of our competitors, but our main focus is on constantly completing facility upgrades and improvement projects to keep our property values and investment potential up,” he said.

MAKE A BRIGHTER FUTURE YOUR LEGACY

For 60 years Amnesty International has campaigned for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. We believe everyone is entitled to live in a world where their human rights are recognised, realised, and protected. At the very core of Amnesty International is the belief that the actions of each individual can make a difference. What better way to demonstrate this than by making a gift in your Will and helping to transform the future for the better?

Organising your Will is a way to ensure that everything you have stood for in your life, everything you believed in and cared so deeply about, lives on for the next generation. A Will is more than a piece of paper, it is absolutely vital to preserving and protecting the fundamental rights that underpin everything else we hold dear.

When you choose to make a gift in your Will to Amnesty International, our promise to you is to continue to uphold our shared values long into the future. We are proudly independent and non-partisan, which means gifts in Wills are critical to our work. We rely on the generosity of our supporters to help us search out the facts, expose what’s happening and rally people

together to pressure governments and those in power to respect human rights.

It’s more important than ever to hold on to what you believe in, and what you know is true. No matter the size of your gift, it’s a way of ensuring that the struggle to uphold our shared values of freedom, equality and justice will continue in the world we’re leaving our children and grandchildren.

Your gift to Amnesty International will help safeguard a future world where human rights are respected, defended and upheld. It’s a gift that will ensure that your values will live on for your loved ones and across generations to come. Teleclinic Care

A new smartphone Cardiac application

Cardiovascular disease affects all of us and accounts for over 1.2 million hospitalisations in Australia alone, so it comes as no surprise that the Prince of Wales Cardiology Department is the busiest inpatient department in the hospital.

To make matters worse, hospital re-admission for cardiovascular patients - especially in the first 6 months - are sadly all too common.

TeleClinical Care (TCC) is a new smartphone app, developed by Prince of Wales Cardiology Team, under the leadership of Dr Ooi and Dr Indraratna, with support from UNSW School of BioMedical Engineering.

The app enables clinicians to make proactive interventions with patients long after their hospital discharge, and to identify trends in health indicators that patients would not normally raise. A comprehensive smartphone application-based model of care to improve outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease.

The app-based model of care provides telemonitoring and educational support for patients immediately after admission for acute coronary syndrome or heart failure, through their smartphones. The application uses Bluetooth technology to help monitor the health of patient’s hearts after they have left hospital.

will own a smartphone and have been admitted to hospital with either a heart attack or symptoms of heart failure. Patients in the trial will receive the smartphone application, as well as a Bluetooth enabled weighing scale, blood pressure machine and activity band. Measurements taken using these devices will be transmitted via the patient’s own smartphone to a secure server that will be accessed by the research team.

Dr Sze-Yuan Ooi said the application also allows patients to monitor their own progress and delivers lifestyle advice and education to patients in a format similar to a text message.

“It also allows us to monitor our patients in their homes and if their measurements are outside the normal range, it triggers our team to respond.” says Dr Ooi, “It helps us to detect and act upon early warning signs if our patient’s heart condition is deteriorating.”

It is anticipated that Total Cardiac Care will help to manage patients heart health after they have been in hospital, prevent them being readmitted to hospital, and help motivate and educate patients about their condition.

The Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation through its Reg Inglis Award supported Dr Praveen Indraratna’s research, funding development and maintenance of a

smartphone app, the procurement of mobile technology for patients with limited access and covered staffing costs on the project.

Without the Reg Inglis Award, the project would not have been possible at such an impressive scale.

In fact, thanks to the size of the study, the project demonstrates such a clear benefit that it’s findings have been considered a turning point for the delivery of care and support to cardiology patients.

Furthermore, the award has enabled the following impact: The project will be scaled from two hospitals to 12 in 2022, representing a state- wide adoption reaching high risk patients outside of Prince of Wales Hospital’s catchment area, including NSW’s remote and regional population and indigenous

communities.

The app technology had an unprecedented impact on the behaviours of participating patients.

Not only were urgent care episodes reduced by the use of the app, but patients also felt reassured knowing they were being closely monitored.

Dr. Praveen Indraratna is a general cardiologist who sub-specialises in cardiac imaging including cardiac MRI and cardiac CT.

Dr Sze-Yuan Ooi is a clinician researcher, a Staff Specialist and is the current Director of the Coronary Care Unit.

At the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation, our mission is to enhance and support the work of the inspirational clinicians and nurses, who are at the forefront of healthcare excellence.

Research breakthroughs do not happen without collaboration and partnership. By working together, we can accelerate progress in discovering new treatment and therapies for illness and improving the quality-of-life for patients.

The Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation is dedicated to collaborating with partners to achieve a shared vision in medical research and translational medicine.

Delta Therapy Dogs

Delta Therapy Dogs is a much-loved service that visits Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick and brightens up the day for our patients, nurses, and doctors. We currently have six Delta Therapy Dogs visiting the hospital and we are working on expanding that out to a further four dogs.

The Delta Therapy Dogs Program provides fortnightly visits to various wards at Prince of Wales Hospital on a day and time suitable to our patients, the dogs spend up to 1.5 hours visiting with the patients. This provides regular contact and the opportunity for the patients and staff to build a relationship with the therapy team and has provided incredible results.

Delta Therapy Dogs believe that the human-animal bond improves our quality of life and leaves lasting paw prints on our hearts, their purpose is to help animals bring joy to people.

There is a special kinship shared between dogs and people of all ages. Attention from a dog can brighten your day, make you feel loved and, as has been scientifically proven to improve overall health and well-being.

There is now a large body of empirical research which supports positive outcomes for various population groups across health and community settings. We believe that a better relationship

between people and dogs will lead to a more enriched and fulfilled life for humans and dogs alike.

The human-animal bond can impact people and animals in so many positive ways. Research shows therapy dogs can reduce a person’s stress physiologically (cortisol levels) and increase attachment responses that trigger oxytocin –otherwise known as the Love Hormone.

Evidence has shown that there is improved physical, social, cognitive, emotional, and environmental outcomes for a person who interacts with a dog on a regular basis.

Burgess brings considerable knowledge and experience to the role, having spent more than two decades involved in sports legal practices and in CEO roles, and boasts a Bachelor of Laws and Graduate Diploma of Sports Law.

Q & A WITH MARK HUGHES

B&L : Congratulations Mark on the outstanding success of The Mark Hughes Foundation. What inspired you to start the Foundation?

MARK : I was diagnosed with high grade brain cancer in 2013. With a wife and 3 small children my life flashed before my eyes and at that moment Kirralee and I decided we couldn’t sit back and had to make a difference. MHF was launched in March 2014 while I was going through chemotherapy and it astonishes me how far we have come in that time.

B&L : Can you tell us when the idea was actually conceived?

MARK : Kirralee and I actually started discussing setting up a foundation whilst I was still in the hospital after surgery. After googling the statistics on brain cancer we knew this was a journey we had to take.

B&L : Your foundation has helped many brain cancer patients. How does that make you feel?

MARK : The greatest thing we can do is to give patients hope. We have invested millions into research and funded brain cancer care nurses in the Hunter Regional and rural NSW. The care nurses are absolute angels to patients and their families going through what would be the toughest times of their lives. It costs a lot of money to fund these nurses but they are worth every cent.

B&L : Your wife Kirralee is a big part of the foundation. How does she feel about the work and results the foundation has achieved?

MARK : Kirralee and I have always made a great team and we were always in this together. We are both so proud of what we have achieved together and so grateful for the support, however we also know that so much more is needed and we won’t rest until we find better treatments for those diagnosed with brain cancer.

B&L : You were only 36 when you were diagnosed with brain Cancer and your children were very young. How did you explain the situation to your children and how did they react?

MARK : Our 3 children were all under 10 when I was first diagnosed and we did and still do to this day focus on what

we are doing to make a difference. They know that I get scans every 4 months to check that I am still healthy and that the foundation plays a big role in giving us hope for the future.

B&L : Your wife family and friends have given you enormous support over the years, and you are regarded as a hero and survivor by Aussies throughout Australia. How does it feel knowing that your foundation is contributing to find a cure for brain cancer?

MARK : To know that we have supporters right across Australia who believe in us and are committed to helping us raise funds for brain cancer is truly humbling. Our little idea that I came up with during treatment to wear a beanie on my head has now helped us raise close to $30 million.

Our annual Beanie for Brain Cancer Campaign and the NRL Beanie for Brain Cancer Round are our biggest fundraisers to date and the support is overwhelming at times. It keeps us motivated and energised to keep pushing hard for a cure.

B&L : What is next on the agenda for you and the foundation?

MARK : Our first MHF ladies trek kicks off in April 2023 and we are looking for sponsors and donations to help the crew of 20 raise as much funds as we can.

B&L : What is the ultimate goal that you would like to achieve through your foundation, and what is your aspiration for yourself in the future?

MARK : We are as committed as ever to searching for a cure for brain cancer. The statistics are that brain cancer is the biggest killer of children and those under 40 years. This year a new $25 million Centre for Brain Cancer Research was announced which builds on the existing partnership between MHF and the University of Newcastle with MHF having now committed $15 million over five years to establish a dedicated research team and centre. This is a game changing step for brain cancer research in Australia and something we have been working towards since 2014.

B&L : I believe that you have met some amazing people during this journey. What would you like to say to them, to help them remain positive?

MARK : Thank you for being so brave and putting yourself out there to support MHF. We are devastated when we hear of someone losing their battle to brain cancer however it just makes us more committed than ever to honour those who have passed and find better treatments. It is our mission to put a stop to this disease so that no more families are torn apart from this hideous cancer.

B&L : Can you tell us about your association with Paul Harrigan, and the role he plays in the foundation?

MARK : Where do I start! Chief was my captain as a 20 year old when I first started playing rugby league with the NRL Newcastle Knights and we won a premiership together in 1997. Thirty years later he is still one of my closest mates and we are still doing amazing things together. He is my mate, my mentor, an ambassador for MHF and just one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I’m just so thankful I have him by my side during this journey.

Queen Elizabeth II

Buckingham Palace subsequently broke the news of the monarch’s tragic death, which resulted in an outpouring of tributes from around the world expressing extreme sadness. Leaders from across the globe including Presidents, Prime Ministers, Religious Leaders including The Pope and Prominent Entertainers were among the world leaders and celebrities who paid tribute and offered their condolences to the Royal Family.

In death as in life, the Queen was a unifying force, bringing people together from all walks of life. She was the longest serving Monarch in British History, who was admired around the world for her monumental devotion to duty. She was the glue that held the family together, The Monarchy, The Commonwealth, a link to the past, and unwavering dedication to duty.

After her coronation in 1953, she vowed to devote her life to service, a promise she kept to the end. During her incredible 70 year reign, she was admirably supported by her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip,

(The Duke of Edinburgh) whom she described as her “Strength and Stay all these years.’’ Unfortunately Prince Philip passed away age 99 in 2021.

When Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip married in November, 1947, Great Britain was still recovering from World War II.

However, the nuptials were met with enormous enthusiasm from Post War Britain and its people. The ceremony was recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio to over 200 million people around the globe. Prompting former Prime Minister Winston Churchill to describe the event as a ‘’flash of Colour’’ on the hard road we have to travel. The Royal Couple remained devoted to each other till the end, despite the many challengers they endured over the years.

According to a Royal insider, the Queen wore the crown and Prince Philip wore the pants. They said Philip was the power behind the throne, shrewd, steadfast and neverfailing to be supportive.

KING CHARLE’S TRIBUTE TO HIS MOTHER

‘’On behalf of all my family. I can only offer the most sincere and heartfelt thanks for your condolences and support. They mean more to me than I can ever possibly express. And to my darling mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late papa. I want simply to say this, Thank you. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.’’

Heartbeat tournaments supports cardiac care at Grampians Health Ballarat

Grampians Health Ballarat and Ballarat Health Services Foundation would like to express our sincere appreciation of the Ballarat Highlands Regional Bowls Region. For the last 34 years, their Heartbeat Bowls tournaments have supported our cardiology services.

The tournament was introduced to raise funds for the cardiac departments of both Ballarat Base Hospital and St. John of God Hospital after a number of bowlers and their families had had treatment for heart issues and were helped by Heartbeat Ballarat. The initial tournament was arranged by the Secretary of the (then) Ballarat Region Bowls Association (BRBA), the late Frank Bourke, and the late George Mouser. The aim of the tournament was to raise funds for cardiac care and research through a collaboration with the bowls association and Heartbeat. Mr Mouser’s commitment to the cause earned him the nickname ‘Mr Heartbeat’.

The Heartbeat tournament has always been run under the auspices of the current bowls organisation in the area, firstly the BRBA, then the Ballarat District Bowls Division (BDBD) and now the Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region (BHBR).

While there have been too many people involved over the years to mention individually, special mention should be made for those who have recently ensured the tournament is a success. These include Lionel Calf (Ballarat BC), Ken Birch (City Oval BC) and Ross Jones (BMS BC) and by Heartbeat members Barry Nixon, Anne

Gow and Linda Macaulay, who is also a Nurse Practitioner in the Heart Failure Clinic at Grampians Health Ballarat.

Over the 34-year history of the tournament, it has raised approximately $110 000 for cardiac care at both Grampians Health Ballarat and St John of God Hospital.

Sarah Masters is the Head of Fundraising and Engagement at Grampians Health Ballarat. “We wanted to publicly acknowledge the generosity and commitment of the bowling community in the Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region. Their donations allow us to provide innovative, patient-centred care, as quickly as possible. The Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region community are true champions for cardiac care.”

Water works: why hydrotherapy is great exercise

As we age changes occur to our muscles and sensorimotor systems which can decrease mobility, lead to pain or stiffness and negatively affect balance and posture. These changes can lead to older people becoming more prone to falls and injury which can affect their ability and confidence to exercise or even engage in daily movement activities like walking the dog, for example. Additionally other health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, depression or dementia which become more prevalent with age may also factor into a decrease in mobility and overall wellbeing.

Although this may sound alarming, the good news is that there is a plethora of research which demonstrates the efficacy of hydrotherapy in increasing function, strength and range of movement while decreasing pain and swelling. It has also been shown to improve mood, cognitive function and overall fitness and wellbeing. Hydrotherapy, which may also be called aquatic therapy, water therapy or hydropathy, is essentially strength and conditioning based exercises performed in warm water usually not much deeper than chest height. “Hydrotherapy is ideal for older people as the water provides a low risk exercise environment. The warm water often reduces pain and allows for a freedom of movement that a person may not otherwise achieve on land,” explains

Barossa Village Physiotherapist Emily Davenport. “Within group classes the program of exercises can generally be easily modified to suit individuals within the group, whether this is to provide more or less of a challenge, or to accommodate for specific ailments. Plus, no swimming ability is required to be able to participate!”

Barossa Village is the only aged care provider in the region to have a dedicated on-site hydrotherapy pool. The facility, which opened in late 2020, boasts a comfortable water temperature of 33 degrees and an ambient air temperature of 32 degrees year round, with a maximum water depth of 1.5 meters and hand rails on three sides. The facility also contains a fully accessible bathroom built to Changing Places specifications which can enable direct access from the bathroom to the pool via mechanical lifter.

Barossa Village offers group hydrotherapy classes which eligible individuals may be able to utilise their Home Care Package (HCP) or Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) funds to cover out of pocket expenses, plus provides self-guided community access Monday to Friday from 6am to 9am with access passes starting at just $50 for ten visits.

THE RISE AND RISE OF KING CHARLES III

THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III WILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY 6TH MAY 2023.

However, Charles was officially proclaimed as King of the United Kingdom the moment his mother , Queen Elizabeth II passed away on the 8th September, 2022. The proclamation ceremony was conducted at the Accession Council, which was held in the State Apartments of St. James Palace in London. Subsequently, the official Coronation Service will be conducted by The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rev. Justin Welby at Westminster Abbey. The New King, accompanied by his wife, the Queen Consort Camilla will be blessed, anointed and consecrated as sovereign, becoming the 40th British Monarch crowned at Westminster Abbey. The Coronation ritual has been observed for almost 1,000 years and many elements of the service have remained unchanged since 1066, when William the Conqueror was crowned.

However, King Charles has indi cted that he would like the event to reflect ‘’the spirit of our times .’’ Therefore, many believe that the King’s Coronation Service will not be on the same scale as 1953, when the King’s mother (Queen Elizabeth II) was crowned.

There is no doubt that King Charles will live up to the example of duty and service set by his late mother Queen Elizabeth II.

In his first speech as monarch, Charles reassured his subjects that he too, will deliver lifelong service to duty, The United Kingdom and Commonwealth Realms. However, the new King does represent a new era characterised by openness, communication and vulnerability. Unlike his late mother’s motto, of ‘’never complain, never explain.’’

Charles has already proved that he is fully prepared for the biggest role of his life, by displaying his softness and accessibility to his subjects. Undoubtably these attributes will endear him and prove to be the cornerstone of his popularity.

Charles was born in Buckingham Palace in 1948 during the reign of his maternal grandfather, King George VI. He is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philp, Duke of Edinburgh. He was only 3 years old when his mother ascended the throne in 1952. He was made Prince of Wales in 1958 and his investiture was held in 1969.

He was educated at Cheam and Gordonstoun and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Cambridge. He served in the Air Force and Navy from 1971 to 1976. In 1981 Charles married Lady Diana Spencer, with whom he had two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. However, Charles and Diana divorced in 1996. Unfortunately, Diana died in a car accident the following year, along with her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed.

In 2005 Charles married his long -time partner, Camilla Parker Bowles.

Camilla became Queen Consort on the 8 th September 2022, upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession to the throne of her husband King Charles. She carries out numerous public engagements representing the monarchy, often alongside her husband, and is also patron of many charities and organisations. She is well -known for her down-to-earth nature, common sense and humour. Charles has in the past been criticised for straying from good judgement, however it is his wife Camilla who has kept him on the right path.

Charles, stated in his first official speech as King. ‘’I count on the loving help of my wife Camilla, who has relentlessly devoted herself to loyal public service since our marriage 17 years ago. ’

Camilla

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CROWN

QUEEN ELIZABETH II

In February, 2022 the late Queen Elizabeth II marked her seventieth anniversary on the throne, and confirmed that it was her ‘’sincere wish’’ that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles should become Queen Consort when Charles ascended the throne. However, for many years, Camilla’s future in the Royal Family had been in doubt. Unfortunately, ever since Diana, Princess of Wales complained in the 1995 Panorama Interview, that ‘’there were three of us in this marriage,’’ which resulted in Camilla becoming the most disliked woman in the United Kingdom. She immediately became known as the woman who broke up the marriage of Charles and Diana, resulting in the country and the Queen refusing to accept Camilla into the family.

However, Camilla has spent several years rehabilitating her public image, allowing her to move from mistress to the wife of the King of England. Camilla is now recognised as a loyal asset, who is dedicated to Charles and public service, which has earned her a place in the heart of the British nation.

CAMILLA’S LIFE BEFORE ROYAL SERVICE

Camilla Shand was born in 1947 to ‘’upper class’’ parents British Army officer, Major Bruce Shand and his wife The Hon. Rosalind Cubitt. Charles and Camilla reportedly met in 1971. Apparently, they belonged to the same social circle and would attend the same events. They became close friends and eventually began a

romantic relationship.

The relationship was put on hold after Charles travelled overseas to join the Royal Navy. Subsequently, Camilla married British Army Officer Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, they divorced in 1995. Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and regrettably divorced in 1996. However, Charles and Camilla were romantically involved both before and during each of their first marriages. Their relationship was highly publicised in the media and attracted worldwide criticism. Charles and Camilla married in 2005 in Windsor Guildhall which was followed by a blessing at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

“It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.’’

My name is Mala. I am writing to you from Tanna Island in Vanuatu where I live and work for CARE.

I am privileged to be a part of the incredible change CARE’s projects are having here.

We have helped women start businesses, become leaders, and share their knowledge and skills.

Women are working together now to address challenges and build a better future for themselves and their families.

I’ve witnessed so much positive change in the lives of women here in Vanuatu, and I am grateful to all the donors who have made this work possible

I encourage you to join us in supporting women and defeating poverty.

Dear readers, Mala

Roslyn saves her community from disaster

“If this house was to fall down,” Roslyn says, “Everyone would be dead inside.”

It was April 2020 and Cyclone Harold was wreaking havoc through the Pacific Islands. In Vanuatu, it destroyed around 17,000 homes and tragically killed dozens of people. But on a small island called Pentecost, a woman named Roslyn managed to save the lives of her neighbours and friends.

The reason? Roslyn was ready. Luckily for her neighbours, Roslyn had become a member of CARE’s Community Disaster and Climate Change Committee, so she knew exactly what to do to save lives in a disaster.

“I told everyone, ‘Now we must get ready! Put the rocks on top of the houses! Get your torches ready! Check around your house to see what trees are close to the house and cut them down!’” says Roslyn.

In the morning, she immediately began assessing the needs of her community and started repairing the damage.

She organised deliveries of food and equipment to be transported from the mainland and managed the response until our emergency response team arrived.

“We counted on Roslyn to direct the distribution of the items to those who needed them most because she knows the community,” says Jessinta Natu, Shelter Assistance Officer for CARE in Vanuatu. “She knows the households, and who needs what.”

This is why CARE partners with local leaders like Roslyn — because no one knows a community like they do!

Empowering women

through

financial literacy and small businesses

A mother of two from Tanna Island in Vanuatu, Jacklyne always thought of herself as a full-time housewife. She knew how to sew but never thought it was a skill that could bring in money for her family. Despite the family’s spending habits meaning they often struggled to pay for their children’s school fees and other household items, the idea of Jacklyne getting a job or starting a business just didn’t seem possible to her.  Nor did her husband think she had the right to contribute or comment about his financial management — it simply wasn’t how things were done in their community.

But when CARE visited her village and held a Family Financial Management workshop, things started to change. Men and women learned how sharing financial decision-making and supporting women to pursue paid work benefits everyone and can even be a way out of poverty.

Village Savings and Loans Associations

(VSLAs)

In 1991, CARE launched a program in Niger that would change the world – at least parts of it. It harnessed the ancient practice of group savings in a concept called Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA). The premise is simple: VSLA members (mostly women) make a small deposit into the lockbox every week. Three senior members of the group are given keys and the box can only be opened when all three are present.

Members can then request small loans and then pay them back over time with interest (usually about 10 per cent). The interest comes back to the group as profit, which they can then invest into their families, their communities, and their businesses. It’s an incredibly sustainable, locally-led solution that empowers women who have previously been prevented from playing an active role in leading their families out of poverty.

And the best part is, it really works! Across the 200,000+ VSLA groups that CARE has supported around the world, these simple lockboxes enable an estimated 30 million transactions a month – or $350 million per year.

A member of the first-ever VSLA established in Niger in 1991, Fatchima has witnessed the powerful impact the program has had on her family and community. Over the past 30 years, Fatchima has found financial freedom in the peanut oil and home remedy businesses she runs, having started and expanded them with loans from her VSLA group — which she is still a member of today!

As a child bride who was forced to drop out of school at a young age, Fatchima didn’t think it was possible for girls to have dreams. But because of her involvement in the VSLA, Fatchima’s granddaughter Nana now dreams of becoming a teacher.

“The workshop made us realise our mistakes and our money misuse in our home,” Jacklyne says. “We never knew how to negotiate, and now my husband and I sit down together and have discussions before we do anything.”

After the workshop, CARE workers spoke to Jacklyne and other women in her community about starting a Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA), so they could bring in their own money as well. When she mentioned her skills in sewing, Jacklyne was encouraged to start her own small business.

“This has greatly helped and benefited my small family and me,” Jacklyne says. “Money that I borrow from the VSLA I use to purchase material for my sewing business. I sew island dresses and shirts, modern dresses and many other products.”

JACKAROOS END SERIES ON A HIGH AGAINST IRELAND

The Right at Home Jackaroos have ended the three-test series against Ireland on a brilliant note, capping off a whitewash against the visitors at Club Musgrave on the Gold Coast. After claiming the first test and honours in the opening half of the second on day one, Australia kept the foot on the accelerator in the first session on day two as they wrapped up the second and third tests.

The women would sustain just one blemish throughout the series, while the men were forced to dig deep against a resilient Irish squad.

That was evident in the morning as the visiting duo of Ryan McElroy and Stephen Kirkwood claimed a stunning 17-14 men’s pairs victory over Aaron Teys and Aaron Wilson.

Australia would continue the form as the third test commenced, with the two women’s fours games boasting winning margins of 17 and 13 respectively, but the men’s

contests were a different story.

The Jackaroos would win three of the five matchups in the opening session of the final test, with Andy Kyle and Simon Martin overcoming Matt Lucas and Carl Healey 18-11 before the foursome of McElroy, Kirkwood, Shane Leonard and Mark Wilson defeated Corey Wedlock, Jesse Noronha, Cody Packer and Wilson 21-11 in the fours.

Barrie Lester and Aron Sherriff were able to hold off a strong challenge mounted by Stuart Bennett and Jack Moffett as the pair held on for a crucial 20-19 victory in the second men’s pairs match of the middle session, ensuring Australia would boast the lead heading at the half way mark of the test.

In the concluding session the men would boast three victories from as many games to seal the test, while Megan Devlin, Amy Carruth and Chloe Wilson would take Ireland’s first victory in the women’s competition with an epic 18-17 triples win over Jamie-Lee Worsnop, Natasha Van Eldik and Dawn Hayman.

Melbourne would take on Brisbane in the qualifying final for a place in the decider and claimed a straight sets win before sealing a dominant victory over Adelaide to claim the historic title.

The panel, which comprises of selectors Therese Hastings, Dave Stockham, Assistant National Coach Karen Murphy AM and National Coach Gary Willis, have replenished the main squad following recent retirements to key members and bolstered the developmental feeder teams.

The open squad has seen four changes made, with one coming in the men’s team as an in-form Aron Sherriff returns from a 12-month sabbatical in place of the retired South Australian Wayne Ruediger.

In the women’s squad, three changes have been made with Victoria’s Kylie Whitehead, Queensland’s Bolivia Millerick and New South Wales’ Jamie-Lee Worsnop all promoted into the team from the second-tier feed squad, the Emerging Jackaroos.

The trio will replace the recently retired Commonwealth Games gold medallists and world champions, Rebecca Van Asch and Carla Krizanic, along with Genevieve Delves, who has withdrawn from high performance commitments.

All three have been internationally capped on previous occasions, with Whitehead and Worsnop making their debut in May’s UK Tour, while Millerick donned the green and gold regalia for the first time at the 2017 Multi-Nations.

The Emerging Jackaroos squad sees a slimmed down list for the upcoming year, consisting of 13 players, including three new faces in Queensland’s Cohen Litfin and Jessie Cottell, as well as Victoria’s former capped Jackaroo Dylan Fisher.

The Pathways Jackaroos team boasts 29 bowlers from across the nation and displays the new names of 2022 Under-18 Male Bowler of the Year Jack McShane, 2022 Australian

Open and Australian Under-18 Championships boy’s singles winner Joseph Clarke, under-18 girls’ singles winner Reese Finn-Young, Moreton Bay Pirates BPL team member Chris Rosanes, Victoria’s Sophie Kurzman, ACT’s Flynn O’Shaughnassey and Queensland’s Cody Gerick.

The Over-60s Jackaroos includes Lisa Featherby, Sue Brady, Anne Miles, Beth Quinlan, Claire Sanders, Scott Franklin, Ray Jansen, Tony Schiavello, Gary Smith and Robbie Warren. Following arguably the most historic year for the Jackaroos on the international stage, Willis said he was optimistic about the 2023 squads’ potential.

“We are extremely proud of the 2023 Right at Home Australian Jackaroos squad and the extended teams, which exemplifies the depth of talent to choose from within Australia,” Willis said.

“The team enjoyed a great return to international bowls in 2022 and as a selection panel we feel that these squads and the athletes within them can continue to develop and deliver great results for Australia in the years to come, with a particular emphasis on the next 12-month period, which includes another marquee event in August’s World Bowls Championships on the Gold Coast.”

“The World Bowls Championships has been a great focus of ours, despite only recently contesting the Commonwealth Games in vastly different conditions, and we are planning and preparing our team to be serious contenders in every discipline on home soil.”

“I would like to personally acknowledge the outstanding contribution of each of the players who have recently retired following the Commonwealth Games and emphasise that Wayne, Rebecca and Carla have left an extremely positive and long-lasting legacy with the Jackaroos; they are magnificent people and ambassadors for our country and the sport.”

CARLA KRIZANIC ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL RETIREMENT

Another of Australia’s most successful Right at Home Jackaroos, Carla Krizanic, has announced her retirement from international and high performance commitments effective immediately.

The decision comes after months of diligent consideration, with the outcome ultimately being to prioritise her family, which consists of two boys under the age of three.

Krizanic has been a stable of the Jackaroos contingent since making her debut a decade ago in 2012, and has notched up 212 international appearances and has claimed gold medals at both of the sport’s pinnacle events, in the 2016 World Bowls Championships and twice at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Victorian shares the record for the most Commonwealth Games gold medals won by an Australian in bowls along with Natasha Van Eldik, the also recently retired Rebecca Van Asch, Ellen Ryan and Aaron Wilson with her efforts four years ago, an integral member of the national squad’s most successful games in history.

However, with the lack of events over the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 32-year-old’s family priorities are at the forefront of her mind.

“The decision has been a long time coming, we had Axel then a long break because of the pandemic and fell pregnant again in between,” she said.

“It’s a hard decision because I love playing for Australia and I still feel like I have a lot more to give but my life now is about my two boys and I hate being away from them.

“It was challenging mentally to give it up but easy because I know that my heart is somewhere else now.”

The Club Sunbury member is proud to have been part of the strong triples and fours combinations that saw the Jackaroos claim both events at the 2016 World Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

But despite the illustrious accolades that Krizanic boasts, she notes that any win while wearing the green and gold has been considered a highlight of her glistening career.

“I think for me the most special part is probably the success we had with that triples and fours team that saw the same combinations win the World Championships and then the Commonwealth Games,” Krizanic said.

“To prove as a combination that we were able to back it up and support each other was amazing.

“But all in all every win has been a career high of mine.”

Krizanic remains committed to competing on the national arena, including at events like next month’s BPL16 at Club Pine Rivers, where she will once again line-up for the runner-up Melbourne eXtreme team.

She will also be in action at the World Champion of Champions event in Naenae after that as she bids for a world title.

Bowls Australia and Krizanic’s teammates support her request to step aside from international commitments, with Krizanic noting that she’s eternally grateful for the guidance of many throughout her

career, including her coaches, club and teammates.

“Firstly to my coach Mark Cowan, he’s been my coach since I was 18 and he has been a massive part of my development from being a young girl to being Jackaroo,” she said.

“He’s always been there regardless of the ups or downs is someone that I can always debrief with after an event, a truly humungous part of my career.

“Steve Glasson was my coach for basically my entire career in the Australian team, and towards the end he was more like a father figure rather than a coach, he put the person first before the player and I have always been really appreciative of that.

“Gary Willis of course, as soon as he came into the assistant coaching role was when I began to feel more comfortable in the Australian team, he just has a way of making players feel like a part of the team and he’s extra special.

“To my teammates, and the girls in particular, the special memories that we have and the friendships that we have all hold a special place in my heart.

“A big thank you to Henselite, Club Sunbury and the Victorian Institute of Sport for supporting me as well.”

Since she picked up her first bowl, Krizanic has been endlessly supported by her family, who have often made the trips with her to events to babysit or just cheer her on, and she is now as eager as ever to share the next chapter with them.

“To my parents, Tricia, David and Tony, thank you for everything you have done for me over my career, your support has been unwavering and I will never forget it.

“Finally, my husband Tristan; we have put all of our other dreams on hold so that I can chase mine and now we can start to focus on chasing his dreams.

“I am very lucky that he has been so supportive in me chasing my bowling dreams and now hopefully I can return the favour for him.” Bowls Australia congratulates and applauds Carla Krizanic on a scintillating international career.

SIMPLY HELPING DENNIS TO ACHIEVE HIS GOALS

Game Time

On the day of the game, Michael and Dennis each donned their Richmond colours—Dennis with a cosy Tigers beanie, and Michael with a striped Tigers scarf. They prepped themselves for the journey ahead and made their way to the MCG, where the game was being held. Together, they learned how to book a taxi on a mobile phone, and how to travel the short distance to the grounds from Jolimont Train Station. Upon arrival, Dennis thought to himself (tongue-in-cheek) I better behave myself…

The crowd at the MCG was a little bigger than expected, but that didn’t faze the pair; Michael helped Dennis navigate the sea of people, and asked a few friendly patrons for directions, where necessary. After a short time, they reached their aisle seats on Level 3, with a fantastic view of the grounds and easy access for Dennis. Buzzing with excitement, they prepared themselves to watch their first live footy game in decades.

A Goal for The Tigers, and a Goal for Dennis

The game began, and the Tigers were off to an early lead, but the Blues were slowly catching up. Michael and Dennis each enjoyed the roar of the crowd, and the flashing lights whenever a goal was scored. Munching on a cheese dog, Dennis whispered a few choice words to Michael as his beloved team fought for the ball. But in the end, the Tigers were triumphant, beating the Blues 81 to 66.

Reflecting on the experience, Dennis said that overall, it was ‘very, very good!’, that he felt ‘very secure’ with Michael there to support him, and he was ‘looked after like you wouldn’t believe’. It took Dennis a full week to come down from the excitement of achieving his goal and seeing his first live AFL game in over 45 years… truly a treasured memory, made with his new friend Michael, and with the support of the team at Simply Helping.

Late last year, NDIS participant Dennis, came to Simply Helping to look for tailored, flexible support. He was matched with Michael, one of our friendly support workers, and the pair quickly hit it off. During their weekly support catch-up, Michael and Dennis would chat about life, their interests, and hobbies, and quickly realised they have something in common—they both fiercely support the Richmond Tigers AFL team.

Despite enjoying a match or two on the TV at home, Dennis hadn’t been to a live AFL game in 45 years. Michael saw this as an opportunity to go above and beyond with his support and help Dennis achieve one of his NDIS plan goals—to ‘explore his interests’. So, Michael asked Dennis if he’d be interested in attending an AFL game together, Dennis agreed, and the wheels began to turn.

A Network of Support Dennis’ support network, including his family, Michael, and the team at Simply Helping Central and Northern Melbourne, sprang into action to make his goal a reality. The trip was meticulously planned—they discussed transport, tickets, how to keep warm on the night, and devised a backup plan just in case. With an open line of communication, they were able to create a strategy that left Dennis and his family feeling comfortable, confident, and above all else—excited!

Kudos to the friendly support workers, along with the team at Simply Helping Central and Northern Melbourne.
