The Coronavirus pandemic has created great challenges worldwide. However with restrictions easing globally and domestic and international travel back on the agenda. We feel optimistic that 2022 will be the best year ever.

Karen Murphy, is one of Australia’s all-time best female bowlers with a swag of World titles and Commonwealth Games medals to her name.

“I felt that Ian and Thomas were looking to expand and diversify the Henselite range,” said Karen “this sat well with me and aligns with what I am trying to achieve.”

She has come back to where it all began.

“I started playing bowls when I was 11 years old at Shoalhaven Heads BC. I used to ride my bike down to watch dad play and nagged him to give me a go. I started playing with Henselite Classic 2 bowls. They took a lot of green but gave me a great appreciation of the concept of the draw shot.” It was Henselite bowls that she first used when starting out and with these she learned how to play the game. These early years with Henselite provided a great foundation for a hugely successful international career and saw Karen win back-to-back World singles titles and a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal. After retiring from Australian representation in 2019 and with 668 international appearances, Karen is no less competitive when she steps out on the green for her club, Cabramatta, or for the Sydney Lions in the Bowls Premier League.

Beyond the green, however, her legacy to the sport will continue. “I still want to be very much involved in the game.” Said Karen. “I have recently started as BA National Assistant Coach/ Pathways Manager which I am enjoying very much. I also have just released my new range of #km56 ladies bowls wear. I feel that there is a real lack of modern, comfortable and athletic choice in ladies’ bowls wear. I want my range to be multifunctional so you can wear it casually too. I am enjoying the journey with it.”

Henselite is delighted to be a partner with Karen on this new journey.

Karen will be using Henselite Dreamline XGs on the green, the bowl currently used by over half the Australian Jackaroos squad. Karen’s chosen the XG for “the arc of the bowl and its reliability.”

Aussies join the Plant Protein Challenge To encourage people across Australia to add more plant protein into their diet, World Animal Protection launched the Plant Protein Challenge in September this year. On average, Australians eat 98kg of meat per person, per year, placing Australia second only behind the United States, for meat consumption. This overconsumption of meat has a negative impact on our health, the environment, and animal welfare.

A year of wins for wildlife Thanks to our passionate supporters, 2021 has been full of successes for wild animals right around the world. Our supporters were there alongside World Animal Protection and our partner Blood Lions when the South African government made this historic announcement to phase out captive lion breeding. It means lions will no longer be cruelly bred for tourism or killed for the lion bone trade. We also helped to keep dolphins in the wild, with the creation of a fifth Whale Heritage Site. Algoa Bay, in South Africa, joins Hervey Bay in Australia, The Bluff in South Africa, Tenerife in Spain and Dana Point in the U.S. The new site will help protect beautiful whales, dolphins, sea turtles and other wild sea animals while giving tourists an opportunity to see dolphins and whales in the wild where they belong. We’ve given vulnerable bears better lives, too. In Pakistan, Berdy was once made to dance on hot plates and even burned on her nose with a hot rod. But, thanks to our kind supporters, Berdy was rescued from cruel bear baiting and brought to our partner Balkasar Sanctuary. Our generous supporters have also helped combat the cruel bear bile industry in South Korea. Thanks to a dedicated sterilisation programme for existing bears, and years of

lobbying the government to strengthen wildlife laws, the current generation of bile bears in South Korea will be the last to suffer. We’ll continue to push for a global wildlife trade ban so that wild animals are no longer used for entertainment, traditional medicine, or as exotic pets. Lasting Legacy Kylie Bradford is a research physiotherapist in the Department of Orthopaedics at Queensland Children’s Hospital, where she sees first hand the impact of Children’s Hospital Foundation funding. Growing up the youngest of three children in Central Queensland, Kylie spent a lot of her childhood playing sport, balanced with a strong education and desire for knowledge.

Kylie’s gift will help sick kids like Chloe who was diagnosed with leukaemia.

With a penchant for science, Kylie had planned to study medicine to be an obstetrician. However, she changed tack right before high school graduation and enrolled in a physiotherapy degree. With far-reaching experience in Australia and right across the pond, Kylie has been lucky enough to work in seven different countries where she was exposed to a variety of clinical conditions and challenges.

THE RISE & RISE OF PREMIER PALASZCZUK Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk’s COVID-19 stance has put her at the forefront of the national stage in Australia, as a result of her hard border closures. Yet her approach to “keeping Queensland safe by keeping the borders closed ’’ has infuriated other states, in particular the ACT, NSW and VIC who feel that Palaszczuk has shown a complete disregard for Federal Politics.

However, her strategy has been embraced by the majority of Queensland’s 5 million residents and resulted in her approval rating soaring. She is adamant that her approach to COVID-19 has been the right one. However her critics have consistently accused her as being “a policy light weight,’’ but there is no doubt she has a special connection with the people in QLD. Queenslanders seem to love Palaszczuk because she reflects how they see themselves “unassuming and personable.’’ She has been described by many as a progressive leader, which is not surprising considering she is the most successful female politician in Australian history and the only female Premier in Australian Political History to achieve three term wins. However, before making her political debut in 2015, where she led Labor to victory in the Queensland state elections, she was elected to the Legislative Assembly of QLD for the district of Inala at the 2006 elections. 14

She then subsequently assisted the Bligh Government as adviser and lawyer from 2009 to 2012. Palaszczuk has also been the leader of the Labor Party since 2012 and became the first woman in Australian history to become a state Premier from the opposition. She then went on to lead Labor to victory in 2015, 2017 and 2020 elevating her political status to “the most popular female Premier in Australian Political History. There was never any doubt that Palaszczuk’s destiny would involve politics, she is the granddaughter of Politically-minded Polish immigrants, who survived the war

and the daughter of former veteran state Labor MP for Inala, Henry Palaszczuk. Annastacia won her father’s preselection seat of Inala in 2006, upon his retirement. Palaszczuk was recently successful in securing Brisbane to host the 2032 Olympics, which will be a massive economic windfall for Queensland and generate approximately $8 billion in revenue. TASMANIA SECURES TEAM IN NATIONAL COMPETITION BY AIDAN DAVIS

The Apple Isle will take part in bowls’ showpiece television event, the Bowls Premier League, with the Tasmania Tridents joining an expanded competition for BPL14. The Bowls Tasmania-owned Tridents have secured the ninth licence in the $125,000 prize-money biannual competition, through funding contributed by the Tasmanian Government as part of a recent election promise and have filled their roster with an all-Tasmanian line-up headlined by the state’s preeminent player.

Dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world champion Rebecca Van Asch will guide the Tridents’ maiden journey, alongside the experienced hand of former Australian Indoor Championships runner-up Mark Nitz and reigning Tasmanian Champion of Champion winner Taelyn Male, with one-time Australian Jackaroo Mark Strochnetter assuming the coaching duties.

The three-pronged Tridents moniker was chosen to represent the three regions of Tasmania and the three Tasmanian players that will carry the state’s hopes on the national stage.

“With considerable assistance from the State Government, Bowls Tasmania has been able to work with Bowls Australia to ensure the establishment of a Tasmanian Team in Bowls Australia’s top-level event, the Bowls Premier League,” Hay said.

“The provision of a pathway for bowlers in the state to progress their bowls and aspire for greater rewards has been limited in the past; the Bowls Premier League now provides that vehicle for which we can now showcase the tremendous talent that we have in our state.

“Success of the program will not be measured in prize-money won, but players drafted to National Squads and the greater community awareness and participation rates in the sport here in Tasmania.” The BPL competition commenced in 2013 with six teams, before expanding to eight in the second edition a year later and moved to a biannual staging in 2017.

Bowls Australia CEO and BPL Chair Neil Dalrymple said the announcement was an historic coup for the bowls-loving region.

The Tasmania Tridents fill the ninth place in a now-expanded ten-team competition, with the final team to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

“This announcement also underlines the evolution of the coveted competition, with more teams, more matches, more prize-money and more broadcast hours for each future BPL staging to help keep the sport and its players in the spotlight.”

The next edition of the coveted event, BPL14, will be held at Club Moama from February 21-25 next year.

“It’s exciting to see the proud and passionate bowls state of Tasmania given the opportunity to compete and showcase their talent on the sport’s biggest stage,” Dalrymple said.

FALKNER JOINS BOWLS AUSTRALIA IN HIGH PERFORMANCE ROLE

MORE BPL CUP OPPORTUNITIES THAN EVER IN 2022

BY LACHLAN WILLIAMS After its biggest year yet in 2021, even more clubs will have the chance to get involved in the BPL Cup in 2022. Clubs will have the opportunity to host preliminary BPL Cup qualifying rounds from as early as January next year, the earliest time available since the competition’s inception in 2017. Interested clubs can fill out an Expression of Interest form online if they would like to get in early for their qualifying events for 2022 instalment of the competition. In order to be granted a round between January 1 and February 13 next year, submission of an EOI must be made prior to November 30, 2021. No rounds will be allocated before February 13 for submissions made after this date. Despite planning already in place for the 2022 BPL Cup, the finishing touches are still being made on the completion of the 2021 event. With NSW and Victoria having experienced extended lockdowns, qualifying events have been extended into November and December, with interested teams still able to enter these events to try and progress to the state and potentially national finals. Despite another COVID-interrupted year in parts of the country, 2021 has been the biggest season by far for the BPL Cup, with more than 850 teams and 2700 players competing. English stalwart Ellen Falkner MBE has been appointed Bowls Australia’s (BA) new High Performance Manager – Para Bowls ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Falkner, 42, will commence in the position in early November and work closely with National Coach/Performance Director Gary Willis to lead the planning and integrated delivery of athlete performance service support to ensure sustained results. The three-time English bowler of the year brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position, having amassed three Commonwealth Games gold medals, a World Bowls Championships gold and four World Bowls Tour Indoor titles since making her international debut in 2002. Falkner, who will relocate to Australia for the position, boasts relevant experience in a similar role, having been the voluntary High Performance Coach for Disability Bowls England, as well as having nearly 20 years of professional experience working in sport development.

The appointment adds further strength to the Jackaroos Para-Sport squad, who were crowned champions in both para-sport disciplines on the Gold Coast at bowls’ showpiece event in 2018, with Falkner’s position also assuming some coaching responsibilities.

Falkner, who was in England’s High Performance squad up until this appointment, received her Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) accolade last year for her contribution to the sport. “This new role with Bowls Australia is a great opportunity to combine my playing, coaching and sport development experience to grow the reach of bowls to more people, ensure clear pathways are in place and help to showcase the very best of Para Bowls through supporting players to reach their full potential,” Falkner said. “With the Olympics and Paralympics taking place in Brisbane in 2032, this is more important than ever, and would be a game changer for our sport across the globe if bowls was to be included.”

National Coach Willis said Falkner would bolster Australia’s medal prospects and strengthen the Jackaroos Para-Sport teams’ chance of replicating their golden success from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games three years ago. “We are ecstatic to have appointed Ellen as part of our High Performance team, she brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and skill to the role,” Willis said.

“Her values are consistent with ours here at Bowls Australia and we think she is the perfect fit for our culture as we near the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. “The Para-Bowls program is something that we hold in the highest regard and its success is paramount; Ellen’s appointment is a step closer to achieving more at an international level. “There are increased opportunities through the development of our Para program and we are really focussed on attracting more people to our sport in this space.” Falkner will work alongside a new-look High Performance team led by Willis, who took the reigns as National Coach/Performance Director at the start of the year, which also features Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement Manager Sam Cox, who joined in November, National Assistant Coach Karen Murphy AM, who commenced in March, High Performance Manager Rebecca Van Asch, who assumed the role in June and High Performance Operations Manager Leah Lazzaro, who took on the elevated position in August. Emerging Jackaroo Jake Rynne‘s impressive rise towards the top of the bowls landscape continues, receiving a unique scholarship.

The 18-year-old is one of 10 selected promising young athletes who are looking to further develop and forge their own careers in their respective sports. Playing bowls since kindergarten, he made his progression quickly and was in the Queensland junior team at 11 -years-old and has since continued to improve his game, culminating in selection for Bowls Australia’s high performance program. Throughout his adolescence he has experienced the tutelage of four-time World Champion Ian Schuback and long time coach Greg Bostock. Among Rynne’s fellow peers is Olympic diver Nikita Hains, Hockeyroo Amy Lawton and Tokyo Paralympics silver medallist Madeleine McTernan.

Each member will be mentored by a plethora of the SAHOF’s esteemed members, while also receiving a $5000 sporting grant. Rynne, the number three ranked bowler in Australia, follows in the footsteps of Jackaroo Ellen Ryan, a 2016 alumni of the same program.

ADVISORY GROUP ESTABLISHED TO PUSH FOR OLYMPIC RECOGNITION BY AIDAN DAVIS Bowls Australia’s Chief Executive Officer Neil Dalrymple will chair a new Bowls in the Olympics Advisory Group (BOAG), established to support the sport’s bid for Olympic-recognition for able-body and para-sport disciplines. The international advisory group will provide high-level advice and guidance to World Bowls’ Board with respect to achieving Olympic status, bringing together personnel from World Bowls, Member Nations, and independent authorities, in addition to subject-matter experts as required. Membership will include: • Bowls Australia CEO, Neil Dalrymple (Chair) • World Bowls President, Darryl Clout • World Bowls CEO, Gary Smith • International Bowls for the Disabled President, Paul Brown • Athlete Representative, Lynsey Clarke (Australia) • Member Nation Representatives, Bowls Canada CEO, Anna Mees and Bowls New Zealand CEO, Mark Cameron • Other suitably qualified delegates to be invited as and when required. “The Olympics and Paralympics are justifiably seen as the pinnacle of sport and are undoubtedly events that many sports aspire to be included in and many athletes desire to compete in; positioning Bowls to have the best chance to be included in the 2032 Brisbane programme is the major purpose of this committee,” Dalrymple said. “This committee will play a very important role in preparing a plan and a course of action for Bowls to be included in the Olympics and/or Paralympics in 2032,

which is the ultimate end goal, but we know there is considerable work ahead in order for this outcome to be achieved. “Personally, I thank World Bowls’ Board for the opportunity to chair this committee and I’m pleased that we have been able to assemble a suitable and diverse mix of experienced Bowls administrators from across the globe to progress this important project for the sport and all Bowls Member Nations.” World Bowls commenced the process to gain recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in recent years, but identified significant obstacles that must be overcome, particularly relating to the amount of member nations and subsequent categorisation of sovereign states like the United Kingdom. The panel will initially focus on the preparation of a plan that addresses all key issues and milestones that are required to enable Bowls to be recognised as an Olympic sport by the IOC and IPC, with the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games identified as the appropriate opportunity for inclusion. As such, Australia will be well represented on the panel, with Dalrymple joined by NSW-based recently elected World Bowls President Darryl Clout contributing suitable experience, having been the Vice President of International Softball Federation, alongside South East Queenslandbased Australian Jackaroo Lynsey Clarke as an athlete representative. Scotland-based World Bowls CEO Gary Smith, Englandbased International Bowls for the Disabled President Paul Brown, Bowls Canada CEO Anna Mees and Bowls New Zealand CEO Mark Cameron round out the delegation entrusted with securing representation in sport’s showpiece event. Henry VIII was a keen lawn bowler, but banned the game for lower classes because "Bowyes, Fletchers, Stringers and Arrowhead makers", who were essentially for the national defence, were all spending more time playing bowls than on archery practice. The most famous story about lawn bowls involves Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada. Upon sighting of the massive fleet, on July 19, 1588, Drake was swiftly informed, but replied: 'There is plenty of time to win the game and thrash the Spaniards too.'

In 2018, Riley (then 7) was playing with a small basketball on an elastic string when he bumped himself in the face. His mum Tammy thought nothing of it, but by Monday morning, things had changed. ‘When Riley woke up, I noticed the left side of this face had drooped. The next day, he had a temperature and was complaining of a sore jaw. I took him to the GP who referred us to Monash emergency.’ The medical team at Monash swooped into action and just after midnight, the family received news they could never have imagined. Riley was diagnosed with leukaemia.

‘My immediate reaction was one of shock. I kept thinking, Riley isn’t sick! He hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down! How can this be?

Riley’s treatment began immediately and involved chemotherapy and radiation for a lump on his brain. Riley quickly went from being an active child to having to undergo completely debilitating treatment with numerous side effects.

‘The treatment made Riley very nauseous. He experienced nerve damage because of the chemotherapy, as well as memory loss, which might be due to radiation. We’re just hoping this won’t be a long-term side effect.’

IS IT SAFE TO SAY NOT ALL FAIRY TALES HAVE THE DESIRED HAPPY ENDING WE ALL ASPIRE TO ACHIEVE? In July, 1981 a global audience of 750 million people from across 74 countries watched H.R.H Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer exchange vows at St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was a fairy tale beginning for the much loved golden couple, who symbolized the sometimes unachievable “fairy tale’’ of undeterred love and devotion between the most eligible prince in the nation and his gorgeous princess. Diana became an instant global sensation causing a media frenzy each time she appeared in public. It soon became apparent to the public and the media that Diana was now the undisputed star of The Royal Family and a worldwide celebrity and icon, leaving Charles feeling somewhat inadequate and jealous as he struggled with his wife’s popularity. Unfortunately, we now know that the marriage was doomed from the start, and the fallout between Charles and Diana is now well-documented with every dramatic

incident being detailed by the global media. These revelations of course ultimately shattered the elusive “fairy tale’’ we all aspire to achieve. Unfortunately, on the 31st August 1997, one year after their divorce was finalised, Diana was killed in a car accident from injuries she sustained in the crash while being chased by paparazzi in Paris. Diana left behind a devastated nation consumed with grief who adored her, her two sons William and Harry who were 15 and 12 at the time and an ex-husband who was filled with remorse and a shattered public image. Dolly Parton was born in a one-room cabin on the outskirts of Tennessee in 1946. She is the fourth of twelve children, and has often described her family as being ‘’dirt poor.’’ Yet despite her humble beginnings, Country Music Powerhouse Dolly is one of the most successful recording artists of all time.

She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. However, she originally found success as a song writer for other artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson and Tina Turner before subsequently embarking on a solo career. Her prolific song writing ability led to vigorous inquisitiveness from the music industry, which ultimately resulted in her meteoric rise to fame………………….. Dolly has composed over 3,000 songs including the international pop anthem ‘’I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU’’ for Whitney Houston. Dolly has achieved unimaginable success for over five decades. She is a multi-instrumentalist, actress, author and humanitarian, however she is primarily known for her work in country music. In 1967 Parton joined forces with American Country Music Supremo Porter Wagoner, together the pair achieved success with thirteen studio albums and twenty one singles on The Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart, which included the number one single ‘’PLEASE DON’T STOP LOVING ME’’ which subsequently catapulted Dolly into the spotlight. The duo was named ‘’VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR’’ that same year by The Country Music Association. Dolly then followed their triumphant win by releasing her solo debut album in 1967 with ‘’Hello, I’m Dolly,’’ which resulted in enormous success as a solo artist. Her success continued through the 70’s and 80’s when she made a series of duets with other artists including her dear friend Kenny Rogers. Their song ‘’ISLANDS IN THE STREAM’’ written by THE BEE GEES reached number one globally. By 1980 Dolly’s career continued to shine with eight of her singles reaching number one, and her influence on pop culture reflected by mainstream performers such as OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN covering her songs. That same year Dolly’s theme song for the 1980 movie ‘’9 to 5’’ in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin reached number one in the country charts. However, by 1981 the song reached number one in the adult contemporary charts, and secured a place in American Music History for Dolly. In 1999 Parton received country music’s highest honour, an induction into Country Music Hall of fame. This was then followed in 2001 by an induction into the National Academy of Popular Music/songwriters Hall of Fame. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Parton donated $1 million towards research at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, and today continues to support multiple charities. • Loss of bladder and bowel control, with weakness in both legs are important symptoms that require immediate medical attention. HOW IS A DIAGNOSIS MADE?

You should see your general practitioner for a medical and physical exam. They may obtain a CT scan and /or an MRI scan to assess your spine. CT/MRI produces pictures of bones, joints, ligament, the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Sometimes other tests are needed such as bone scans and specialised x-rays. HOW ARE BACK AND NECK PAIN TREATED? If you experience back or neck pain it may simply improve with some rest. Over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may also help alleviate discomfort. Activity should be modified to avoid movement that exacerbates pain. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy are beneficial. Low-impact exercise programs may improve range of motion, increase muscle strength, and improve flexibility and mobility, increase endurance, and improve pain. Weight loss and improving one’s core strength are also useful.

Some operations (for example those that help control the conditions spinal stenosis or sciatica) employ a decompression technique and at times may also require a fusion. The latter involves a surgeon placing titanium screws and rods to stabilise the spine and cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse. There are minimally invasive ways to perform this type of surgery, and can even encompass advanced technology such as GPS-like tracking systems and robotics. If performed for the right indications, surgery can be effective in 80-90% of patients.

WHEN CAN A SURGEON HELP? A surgeon can advise on further treatment if the above suggestions haven’t improved the pain and your quality of life. Your surgeon can assess your imaging and recommend cortisone steroid injections that can alleviate some forms of neck, back, arm or leg pain. An appropriate surgical operation can also significantly improve pain, mobility and quality of life.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY Most patients are mobilised either on the same or following day of surgery, as early movement has been shown to be be beneficial. You may be reviewed by a physiotherapist to provide advice on stretches, exercises and activities. Sometimes health professionals will design a rehabilitation program to meet your needs. The type of program will depend on the procedure you underwent and your level of mobility. WHAT DOES AN OPERATION INVOLVE? Because symptoms, imaging findings and causative factors can vary significantly, a surgical procedure must be tailored for you. A traditional spine surgery procedure involves an incision along the backbone. The surgeon moves muscle and soft tissue aside to gain access to the bones of the spine and the spinal cord. Minimally invasive techniques involve a smaller incision and special microsurgical instruments, through which the surgeon operates on the spine. Minimally invasive techniques may be able to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of complications. These approaches allow the surgeon to trim

DR PETER WILSON BSc MB BS (Hons) MS MSurg FRACS BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE recently had the privilege of chatting with neurosurgeon Doctor Peter Wilson from BRAINSPINE, about his extraordinary career, his family and private life away from the surgery and the legacy he wants to leave behind. BRAINSPINE’S specialist neurosurgeon DR. PETER WILSON’s focus is on endoscopic skull base surgery, brain tumour surgery, and complex spinal surgery. His current appointments are at Prince of Wales Public and Private Hospitals, and St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney. Peter graduated from the University of Sydney in 2005 and has worked in multiple neurosurgical units as a registrar, training with over 30 neurosurgeons before completing his formal training in 2015. During his training, he completed a Masters of Surgery by research at the University of New South Wales and a Master of Surgery at Macquarie University. After concluding his neurosurgical training, Peter worked as a locum consultant neurosurgeon at the Prince of Wales Public Hospital prior to embarking on post-fellowship training. He then subsequently completed a complex spinal fellowship in Adelaide focusing on trauma, correction of spinal deformity and minimally invasive spinal surgery. He also travelled to Birmingham in the UK for further experience in skull base surgery and radiosurgery, as well as New York in the USA specifically for endoscopic skull base surgery. B&L : How do you relax when you are at home?

B&L : Congratulations Peter on your extraordinary career. What position do you currently occupy at The Prince of Wales Hospital? PETER : I am currently a consultant neurosurgeon. B&L : Why did you become a neurosurgeon, and are other family members in the medical profession? PETER : Yes both my parents are doctors, and I became a neurosurgeon because I have always been fascinated by the way our bodies work, especially the nervous system. I also find it extremely rewarding helping vulnerable people overcome complex situations, associated with brain and spinal surgery. B&L : How long have you been associated with BrainSpine? PETER : I joined BrainSpine in 2016, after I returned from 40

B&L : Are you married and how does your wife/partner deal with your work commitments and long hours?

PETER : Yes I am married and have two children, my wife is supportive and understands my work commitments. B&L : What is your advice for a healthy mind and body? PETER : A healthy diet with lots of vegetables, and consistency when exercising.

PETER : Home is very intense because I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old. I relax by being at work and focusing intensely on one task at a time.

B&L : How do you feel about COVID, and do you think the Government has dealt with COVID correctly, is there anything you would have done differently? PETER : Yes I would have done a few things differently, however compared to other countries, I think Australia is doing very well.

B&L : What are your aspirations for the future and what legacy do you want to leave behind? PETER : Maintain my focus to maximise the positive outcomes for my patients, and continue to teach the next generation of budding neurosurgeons.

Telestroke – an initiative of Prince of Wales Hospital that connects rural and remote communities with city-based specialists to virtually assess and treat stroke patients. Well done to Professor Ken Butcher and team, this innovative service has made an enormous difference to lives of people affected by strokes. A state-wide service that links city-based specialists to rural and remote health facilities to virtually assess and treat stroke patients was launched in March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic struck in Australia. Prince of Wales Hospital hosts the NSW Telestroke Service. This service supports Hospitals in regional and remote NSW to care for people who have

symptoms of stroke. This is a virtual, telehealth service, meaning our Doctors provide services via telephone or videoconference.

Telestroke uses screen-sharing technology provided by eHealth NSW to enable remote specialists to gain full access to patient imaging as it is processed – allowing timecritical diagnosis and immediate treatment of stroke patients.

“The patient had transient symptoms following two previous strokes, so we assessed their vital signs and conducted a neurological examination via Skype for Business – I was able to view the patient’s scans, which were clean. It was a good outcome for the patient, and they are now back living independently," Prof. Butcher said.

Recently, to adhere to COVID-19 enforced social distancing, despite being only a few floors away, Prof. Butcher used Telestroke to treat a stroke patient in the Emergency Department at Prince of Wales Hospital.

This 24 hours a day, 7 days a week service is vital in saving lives and improved outcomes at hospitals, especially to rural patients who suffer a stroke.

Digital health technology is used to treat a patient in the emergency department of POWH, home to the state-wide Telestroke Service “Telestroke is a model for COVID19 care and beyond, as it’s all about bringing better outcomes for stroke patients. The outbreak of COVID19 got us thinking that this type of technology would be invaluable should NSW Health’s medical workforce be severely affected by coronavirus. “If, for example, stroke specialists had to self-isolate but were well enough to work, they could still deliver care to patients of stroke, which – COVID or no COVID – is

THE ROCK WORLD IS IN MOURING AS LEGENDARY ROLLING STONES DRUMMER CHARLIE WATTS PASSES AWAY AGED 80... CHARLIE WATTS known to many as the “rock’’ behind The Rolling Stones, has passed away peacefully in London surrounded by his family. Charlie’s passing has resulted in an outpouring of grief from heartbroken fans around the globe, and subsequently caused an irreparable void in the music industry... Watts achieved international fame as the drummer of The Rolling Stones from 1963, and remained with the band for 58 years. He was regarded by the music industry as one of the greatest drummers of his generation. Watts developed an interest in jazz at a young age and joined the band “Blues Incorporated.’’ During that time he was also playing drums in rhythm and blues clubs in London, where destiny appeared to intervene and he met future bandmates Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones. However, Watts admitted on many occasions that it was jazz that had a major influence on his drumming style. Watt’s first public appearance as a member of The Rolling Stones was in 1963, at the time of his death, Watts, Jagger and Richards were the only members of the band to have performed on every one of the band’s studio albums. The Rolling Stones went on to achieve enormous success as recording artists, with estimated record sales of over 200 million, making them the best-selling music artists of all time.

“SWEET JIMMY’’ is a uniquely Australian collection of short stories written by our very own National treasure, the quintessentially Australian actor Bryan Brown AM. The book (a crime novel) takes us on a believable quest of investigative determination by the writer who explores the many options and activities undertaken by the characters involved in the narrative. Brown, as a writer is authentic and highly- imaginative, as he proceeds to explore the lives and outcomes of predominately working-class Aussie blokes, who have become involved in unsavoury activities such as drugrunning, theft, brutal bashings and murder. Brown has since indicated that many of the characters and incidents in the book were inspired by memories and recollections from his childhood. He also adds that he wrote the first story 35 years ago as a pitch for a film project, which went nowhere at the time. CAREER BRYAN BROWN AM has been lighting up our screens for over four decades and is recognised and respected as one of Australia’s most treasured screen icons. He has starred in over 80 films and television productions since the late 1970s, both in Australia and abroad. He subsequently achieved enormous success and fuelled public fascination in 1980 with his critically acclaimed performances in BREAKER MORANT and the television series A TOWN LIKE ALICE, which ultimately propelled him onto the world stage. Bryan’s other notable productions include THE THORN BIRDS (1983) COCKTAIL (1988) GORILLAS IN THE MIST (1988) TWO HANDS (1999) BEAUTIFUL KATE (2009) & AUSTRALIA (2008) In 2019 he starred and produced the Australian drama PALM BEACH. The movie was directed by Brown’s wife Rachel Ward. The film featured a stellar cast which included Sam Neill, Greta Scacchi and Bryan’s daughter Matilda. The film’s popularity and cult status resulted in positive reviews and an extraordinary career revival for Brown, which resulted in a significant place in the hearts of all Australians and Australian cinematic history. However, it was his outstanding performance in the television miniseries THE THORN BIRDS (1983) which resulted in a Golden Globe Award and Emmy Award nomination.

EARLY LIFE Brown was born in 1947 in Panania, a suburb in Southwest Sydney. The son of John “Jack’’ Brown (a salesman) and Molly Brown a pianist. However, times were tough in the fifties and Bryan and his younger sister Kristine were predominately brought up in their council abode by their mother Molly. Bryan has admitted in the past that there was never a significant male role model as a child or through his adolescent years and credits his incredible mother Molly for establishing the boundaries relating to morals, behaviour and relationships and teaching him how to be a man. Bryan started his working life at a Financial Services Company (AMP) as an actuarial student, until he discovered a passion for acting. MARRIAGE Bryan was first introduced to his wife Rachel Ward in 1983, on the set of the TV miniseries “THE THORN BIRDS’’ a production that was based on Colleen McCullough’s novel of the same name. Ward was a successful English model and actress at the time, and had already graced the cover of several English magazines covers. She had also received a Golden Globe Award nomination in 1981 for her role in the film SHARKY’S MACHINE starring alongside Hollywood heartthrob Burt Reynolds. Brown and Ward were married within nine months of their first meeting. The ceremony was held at Ward’s childhood home, Cornwell Manor in Oxfordshire in the UK. They have three children Rosie, Matilda and Joe. AWARDS Brown received the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for BREAKER MORANT (1980) and for TWO HANDS (1999) He was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame in 1989. Brown was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005 for service to the community through a range of charitable organisations, and for his work and commitment to the Australian film and television industry. In 2013 The Bryan Brown Theatre and Function Centre in Bankstown, Sydney was named after him. He won The Longford Lyell Award at the AACTA Awards in 2018 and remains active in the industry as an actor and producer. DERRYN HINCH HAS BEEN MAKING HEADLINES IN AUSTRALIA FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS, SINCE THE EARLY SEVENTIES.

The man affectionately known as “THE HUMAN HEADLINE’’ shocked his fans in 2016, causing an avalanche of controversy, when he unexpectedly went from colourful media personality to Victorian Senator. However, he has managed to navigate numerous dramas that have plagued him during his turbulent career, and still managed to stay at the forefront of the collective mindset of Australians for over five decades.

During his career, he has been accused of being insensitive and disrespectful, coupled with a willingness to exploit situations for his own benefit. He has on numerous occasions been in trouble with the legal system for “contempt of court’’ and spent 50 days in prison in 2014 for breaching a suppression order, when he published comments about a rape/murder case…………. Life for Hinch started in New Zealand in 1944.

By the age of 15, Hinch had already secured a cadetship in 48

journalism with “The Taranaki Herald’’ in New Plymouth, New Zealand.

He then came to Australia in 1963 and joined The Sun Newspaper in Sydney. By 1976 Hinch was already making waves as the newspaper’s editor. He subsequently joined The Seven Network in 1982 as host of the popular “Beauty & the Beast.

By 1987 Hinch had secured his own current affairs show titled Hinch, which was on air until 1991.

Over the years Hinch has become a media magnet, resulting in public fascination both on television and radio. He has had short periods as host of radio programs on Sydney’s 2UW and Melbourne’s 3MP and 3XY. However, was often absent from the programs due to poor health, suspension and house arrest. In 2006, Hinch’s health declined. He would later reveal he had inoperable liver cancer. In July 2011 he underwent successful liver transplant surgery at The Austin Hospital in Melbourne.

Over the years, Hinch has achieved enormous success as a prolific author, who has written and published thirteen bestselling books. He has also appeared as himself in minor roles in various films including “The Wog Boy’’ and “The Colour of darkness,’’ and made several cameo appearances on the popular television production “Fast Forward.’’ In 2016, Derryn was elected to the senate with his newly formed political party called “The Justice Party.’’ The party became a beacon of hope for victims of crime and their families. One aspect the party focused on, was to establish a “National Public Register’’ of convicted sex offenders. Unfortunately Derryn lost his seat in the senate in the 2019 election.

The “Bad Angel” WWII Story We were in Hanger #4 of the Pima Air and Space Museum to view the beautifully restored B-29, when I happened to take notice of a P-51 Mustang near the big bomber. Its name? "Bad Angel”

I was admiring its aerodynamic lines and recalled enough history to know that until the Mustangs came into service, the skies over the Pacific Ocean were dominated by Japanese Zeros. Then something very strange caught my eye. Proudly displayed on the fuselage of “Bad Angel” were the markings of the pilot's kills: seven Nazis; one Italian; one Japanese AND ONE AMERICAN. Huh? "Bad Angel" shot down an American airplane? Was it a terrible mistake? Couldn’t be. If it had been an unfortunate misjudgment, certainly the pilot would not have displayed the American flag. I knew there had to be a good story here. Fortunately for us, one of the Museum's many fine docents was on hand to tell it. In 1942, the United States needed pilots for its war planes lots of war planes; lots of pilots. Lt. Louis Curdes was one. When he was 22 years old, he graduated flight training school and was shipped off to the Mediterranean to fight Nazis in the air over Southern Europe.

During the next three months, Louis shot down an Italian Mc.202 fighter and two more Messerschmitt's before his luck ran out. A German fighter shot down his plane on August 27, 1943 over Salerno, Italy. Captured by the Italians, he was sent to a POW camp near Rome. No doubt this is where he thought he would spend the remaining years of the war. It wasn't to be. A few days later, the Italians surrendered. Louis and a few other pilots escaped before the Nazis could take control of the camp. One might think that such harrowing experiences would have taken the fight out of Louis, yet he volunteered for another combat tour. Soon after arriving in the Pacific Theater, Louis downed a Mitsubishi reconnaissance plane near Formosa. Now he was one of only three Americans to have kills against all three Axis Powers: Germany, Italy, and Japan.

our dreams and passions.

We are an inspirational bunch of women who believe in living life to the fullest and then some. One of our greatest passions is scuba diving.

We depend on each other, like all good dive buddies do, and find it exciting and relaxing being in the underwater world of nature. Many of us come from different states of Australia to take part in the unique experience of diving together.

We also sometimes go on boat trips, where we live on board and dive multiple times during the day. Sometimes it’s a shore dive where we gear up on land and walk into the sea.

Every dive is different, we dive on ship wrecks, reefs caves and even underwater museums that have been purposely built for the dive industry. During COVID we have mostly dived in North Queensland. However, when travel restrictions have lifted and international travel is back on the agenda, we will resume diving overseas again. Many great friendships have been formed during our diving trips. After a day’s diving, we love to sit down for dinner and drinks and relive our dive experiences. We also enjoy our social times, which are often very educational too, as we learn from each other’s experiences. Many of us have multiple interests, which include kayaking, dancing,

caravanning, hiking, camping, swimming and solo traveling. The list goes on, as we continue to seek more interesting and adventurist things to do and experience. I am very proud to be thought of as a Golden girl by these inspirational women. Perhaps we should all take a leaf out of Jean’s book and continue to pursue our dreams.
