Middle & Senior School News Lutheran Schools Week This week is National Lutheran School’s Week and the theme is Forgiveness – the door to peace. “Forgiveness is one of the ten core values for living in community that is described in the values statement of ‘A vision for learners and learning in Lutheran schools’. Forgiveness is as much about the future as it is the past. The journey of forgiveness lies constantly before us and an attitude of forgiveness is inextricably linked to love and joy. St Andrews is a place where the joy and practice of forgiveness is lived out on a daily basis, where the life-changing effects of forgiveness can be experienced, and where reconciliation, made possible by the love of God through the cross of Jesus Christ, enables everyone to be a peacemaker. Parents might wish to take this opportunity to discuss the value of ‘forgiveness’ with their children, and what it looks and sounds like in the home setting and beyond. The College Fete The countdown is on and there are only 2 Weeks to go until our College Fete. The Fete is a special time in our College calendar and I hope to see all our families there along with their friends and relatives. It will be a great day to connect as a whole community and to raise funds in support of our P&F and ultimately the students at the College. Social Media Last week we emailed a letter home with some important facts and cautionary notes about ask.fm a social media site. As a College we continue to assist our students to become good digital citizens and to embrace the positive aspects of technology. One of the best preventions for cyber-bullying is open dialogue. I encourage parents to continue to be involved in their children’s on-line world and to notify the College either through Moodle by clicking on asafeplace@ standrews or email if they or their child are in need of support in this area. Thank you to the parents who sent in replies and thank you notes. They were appreciated. If you did not receive the letter, please call or email the College so we can update your details. Junior Chamber of Commerce Congratulations to John Hamstra who was recently ap-
pointed to the executive team of the Junior Chamber of Council. The Junior Chamber meets once a term at the Gold Coast City Council to discuss and implement initiatives to support the Gold Coast residents. John has been a member of the council since 2011 and we are delighted that he has been elected to the executive!
NAPLAN Testing Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will sit the National Literacy and Numeracy Tests next week (Tuesday 14 May - Thursday 16 May). Preparation for these tests has been ongoing and we are confident that each student will achieve their personal best results. The work done to prepare our students for the testing has been embedded in our regular teaching programs; focusing on literacy and numeracy skills as key elements, vital to academic success. As a College, our focus remains on assisting our students to achieve their full potential and developing the students under our care as confident learners, critical thinkers and good citizens. The word test conjures up many definitions and emotions and it is important that we encourage our students to keep these benchmark tests in context, they are simply a means by which students and schools across Australia can be compared in order to identify areas of excellence and need. Tests of this nature can be stressful and tiring. St Andrews holds to the view that while we are keen to see students reflect their true ability through such testing programs, we are not keen to see students exposed to undue stress and fear of ‘failure’. Parents play an important role in supporting their children through this week and ensuring optimal performance levels for testing. Parents are encouraged to: • Keep a positive, stress free approach to the week and a ‘do your best effort’ approach to their children’s

performance Ensure their child(ren) attend College on these testing days and arrive on time and ready for an 8:30am start Ensure their child(ren) are well rested Having a substantial, nutritious breakfast prior to coming to College which includes protein or low GI carbohydrates will also help.

With this last tip in mind many of the parents I have spoken to would love it if all parents could agree that digital devices (phones, ipads etc) be turned in to the charge box or locked away for the evening after a certain agreed time, for example 8.30pm. The young person’s reliance on their digital technology and social media has a huge impact on their state of mind and sleep patterns and we see evidence of that on a daily basis at school. From my research into the problem the main advice for parents is to stay informed. With this in mind, I have attached a number of links for parents. They are either general parenting sites that deal with a range of issues or specific to gaming. • • • • •
Senior School News Tips for Parents Recently, I have had many conversations with parents who are concerned with their child’s use of digital technology including gaming and social media. As we know there are adverse effects of gaming on the young adolescent but the battle for parents to limit access is an ongoing and often difficult one. Raise Smart Kids cites a variety of positive effects of gaming but the flip side, usually related to overuse and age inappropriate or violent games includes: • Increased aggressive thoughts, feelings and behaviours and decreased prosocial helping (empathy and concern for others). In many games the child is in control of the violence and even rewarded for it. • Increased social isolation and less time doing other activities eg homework, reading, sports and interacting with family and friends • Learning the wrong values eg violence is rewarded, women are helpless or sexually provocative • Confusion with fantasy and reality • Increased health problems eg obesity • Poor sleep patterns • Damage to long-term concentration • Poorer academic performance • Increased attention problems that make it difficult for them to engage or stick to a task to achieve a goal. Tips for parents: • Know the rating of the video games • Do not install gaming equipment in their bedroom • Set limits on how long and when they can play (some parents have a blanket ban during the school week or for the whole school term) • Monitor all of your child’s media consumption • Supervise internet use (as Michael Carr Gregg suggests computers in the family area and shoulder surf) • Discuss their use and how they feel about the what they see and feel when playing

The experts tell me that this is quite an achievement for someone so young to fly solo. John’s flying opportunities have occurred through the Airforce Cadets and joining as an adolescent does not mean that you have to sign up for a career in the Airforce
but you do get to do many cool things. Ask John if you are interested. All our young people who joined us on ANAZAC Day to march. It was our most impressive turn-out and I was very proud of our Senior School students who role-modelled our willingness to honour those who have sacrificed so much for us in times of war. Our Year 11 and 12 students who are mentoring in the Junior or Middle School through tutoring or visiting the young ones at lunches. These people take pride in their work and have a desire for accuracy as they take time to check over their work. Craftsmanship includes exactness, precision, accuracy, correctness, faithfulness, and fidelity. For some people, craftsmanship requires continuous reworking. (Costa & Kallick, ‘Describing Habits of Mind’) One can’t help enjoy watching students engage with the Skateboard Club at St Andrews because they are striving for accuracy and precision. The students are learning to give persistent effort, devoting their own lunch times, working toward clear goals and developing craftsmanship and mastery to produce work that they are actually proud of. This co-curricular offering created by the Technology department engages students from Middle and Senior School and has a significant number of young ladies working towards their own personally crafted and planned skateboard. Hopefully many of them are ready for display at the Fete on the 25th May, so we can admire the student’s work and let them know they should be proud of their craftsmanship. Keely Holland who overcame her fears and lept from 15000ft in a tandem skydive, free-falling for 60 seconds. The jump was a birthday present from Mum and Dad and Keely shared the jump with her Dad. Luke Hynd (Year 12) who has been selected for the Australian Team to compete at the World Junior Surfing Championships in Nicaragua. Luke also recently travelled with Mick Fanning who provided some valuable mentoring to the young star. They review the rules by which they are to abide; they review the models and visions they are to follow; and they review the criteria they are to employ and confirm that their finish product matches the criteria exactly. To be craftsman-like means knowing that one can continually perfect one’s craft
Middle School News My wife would be dismayed if she knew that I have included a photo of my perennially messy bedside table in a College publication; however, it’s for the greater good and so it’s included. Piled precariously on the stack you will find books about rock musicians, about history, about language, about surfing, and of course, a range of novels in various states of completion. If nothing else, it highlights that I am (or once was) a boy – a collector of information. I am often asked by despairing parents what sort of books that they should be getting their children to read. The answer is simple – anything. Anything is better than nothing. We would all love it if our children were desperately scouring the libraries for anything by Dostoevsky but it’s not going to happen. Be happy if your child devours the Guinness Book of Records, or alternatively, the latest Saddle Club installment. At least they are reading, and, more often than not, sharing the joy of their reading with their friends. Perhaps even sharing the joy of reading with you. Since this image of my table was taken there is a new addition on the top – a novel chosen and bought for me by my son, who has taken enormous delight in the fact that I have dropped all other books to concentrate on his gift. Through his awareness of my love for reading, his frequent visions of me glued to a book and our discussions of eclectic facts from nature then it’s likely that his own love of reading will continue to grow. Whilst the digital world has its own expanding horizons we still need to engage through the written word (…and developing a love of reading is also potentially the easiest way to improve grades over time!). NAPLAN From Tuesday to Thursday next week we will be holding the annual NAPLAN testing for Years 7 and 9. Career News QCS 2013 Supervision Members of the community are invited to apply for the positions of chief community representative or community representative at QCS test centres. Community Representatives: To maintain the accountability, security and proper conduct of the QCS Test at test centres, the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) appoints members of the community to carry out duties on behalf of the QSA. Priscilla Scott Head of Arts On Friday night, Oliver Waddingham (Year 9) starred in his first Art Exhibition, Alter Perception, at Gallery on the Lane in Southport. Oliver has been interested in photography for some time, and his work in this exhibition consists of mostly landscapes that he took while travelling in Southern Australia. Oliver, along with two artists from the Creative Industries TAFE at Coomera, put this exhibition together, organised the opening night, and hung the work themselves. This was in partnership with Creative Industries Gold Coast who offered the venue. Congratulations to Oliver on his first exhibition, and we look forward to many more in the future! This year’s Easter Hot X Bun fundraiser saw us raised $220 for Faith Lutheran College in Plainland who were hit recently by flooding. A HUGE “Thank you” to everyone who purchased Hot X Buns and helping us make a difference to those in need. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday’s, Thursday’s and Friday’s in Tuckshop. P & F News P & F News The school fete is fast becoming a reality and the P & F would like to acknowledge all the hard work already done by many families, staff and businesses within the school community. I am sure all the effort will make the Fete a memorable occasion for all. I cannot believe the prizes on offer for this year’s raffle, so please try to sell as many tickets as possible as the money raised goes directly to school projects. The general meeting for Term 2 is Wednesday 12 June at 7.30pm in the CRC. If you have any agenda items for discussion please email the Secretary at pandf@salc.qld.edu.au by Friday 7 June. It is a great opportunity to have input into school projects which the P & F fund. Everyone is welcome so please join us for drinks and nibbles and to meet other parents. The Treasurers position on the P & F is still vacant and a number of subcommittee vacancies still exist, including fund raising and grants officer. If anyone is interested both these roles are an integral part of the P & F helping to raise funds for improvements around the school. In 2013 the P & F is looking towards funding seating on the Village Green and grandstand seating on the back oval.
