From the Head of Junior School Seussical the Musical WOW – what a fantastic stage show the musical was. The students were amazing and really made the show something special. The costumes were bright and colourful and the children sang beautifully. I am continually amazed at how talented the children are. To be able to sing, dance, act and remember all of their cues is a real credit to them, their parents and their teachers. What was your favourite part of the Musical?
End of Semester One It’s hard to believe that we have just completed Semester 1. We say it every year, but hasn’t that time flown by so quickly. I have been really proud of the student’s efforts this semester and it was a pleasure to read the glowing comments that teachers wrote about them. The reports have been posted home and should arrive home before the end of the holidays. If you don’t receive your child’s report by the end of the holidays, please contact the College. Your child should have brought their portfolio home with them today. Please read this portfolio in conjunction with the reports to help get a picture of your child’s progress. Just a reminder that the 3 way conferences are coming up on the 24th July but if you have any questions about your child’s report, please make contact with your teacher and arrange a time to meet with them.

Holiday Break It is important for the children to take a break from the challenges of a busy school day and the school holidays provide a fantastic opportunity for the children to do that. It is important that the children spend time playing outside, riding their bikes, playing their musical instruments and generally taking a break. It is important that your children also spend some time each day reading a book. This helps to stimulate the mind and to also enjoy the wonderful adventure that comes from reading. From the Deputy Head of Junior School (P - 3) The recent Prep Family Service was a wonderful way to mark the midway point of our school year! Pastor Kevin and our beautiful Prep students reminded us that God is with us even during the difficult times in our lives, and that He wants us to care for one another. This has been our experience right across the College in Semester One. As we take time to reflect and give thanks ... I’m sure we will each find many more than 3 good things!! Thank you, one and all, for the many ways you have shared God’s love in so many ways, both big and small. We pray that each family will have a relaxing and refreshing break over the holidays. Enjoy sharing your children’s learning journeys as they talk about their portfolio. Celebrate their successes and amazing growth over these initial months of 2013. Library News Beginning Programming This term in the JS Library students had the opportunity to participate in a lunchtime introductory programming course using iPads, apps and desktop programs (Scratch and Kodu). Fourteen students (Years 4-6) explored a variety of apps and websites designed to support their inquiry into what programming is and to consider how they would like to further engage with these tools. These resources were accessed on a Moodle page so the students can easily continue their learning outside of school time. Additionally programming allows our students to be problem solvers, fosters creative thinking and supports selfexpression. The Students Some of the students who participated were asked why they were learning about programming and this is what they said. Jackson: “I think that learning programming will ready me for the tech future we are approaching”. Cooper: “I learnt how to program and how to create apps. Aiden: I have learnt to use programs and to create apps to use for my own entertainment”. Sam: “I have learnt how to use a computer and lots of cool programming apps and websites on the computer e.g. Scratch it is where you program a character you can draw the character and do what you want. I love ICT Programming”. Soham: “I have learnt the very basics of programming and found out cool apps/programs. Programming is important for 21st century careers such as game designing, app building and just having fun! Programming is very important for the economy as well. Programming is awesome”! Art News Seussical Success Congratulations to all cast and crew involved in our JS Musical Production of Seussical Jr. What a fantastic production! Well done to all involved. These kinds of experiences are invaluable to our young performers and create lifelong memories as well as important training for those interested in the Performing Arts. These kinds of experiences however do not happen without the tireless efforts of staff. So a special thanks to the Arts Staff who have worked with our young performers.
Punctuality to Rehearsals With several significant events in Term 3 our rehearsal time is valuable. Over the past few weeks, many of our 7.45am rehearsals are not starting till after 8am – leaving the groups with only 15 – 20 minutes to practise. If your child is a member of an ensemble that rehearses before school, please endeavour to have them at the venue at 7.40am so that students are in and playing/singing/dancing well before 8am. Date Claimer 20th Anniversary Gala Concert Saturday 3rd August, 7pm Ruth Butler Theatre As part of our 20th Anniversaries celebrations, we are presenting a Gala Concert featuring performances from current students as well as alumni and staff. Stay tuned for the release date for tickets at the start of next term. This will be a very special evening and a fitting celebration for 20 years. Student Achievements Allie Clark Year 5 Congratulations to Allie who on June 9 competed in the School Aerobics National Championships - State Finals at Ormiston (Brisbane). Allie won the Silver Medal, securing her place at the National Finals – to be held in August (1719) at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. Allie also qualified for the FISAF National competition in Melbourne, however will not be competing this time. Thomas Kilmartin Year 3 Congratulations to Thomas who has just been told that he will be competing in the Qld State final for Mens, Level 3 Gymnastics. Even though he is only relatively new to the sport, he trains for 8 hours a week and made it to the finals in his first year. We are really proud of his efforts and wish him all the best for the state final on the 22nd of June. College Fees – Optional Instalment Arrangements Tuition Fees become due at the beginning of each Term. However, we do understand that this may at times present cashflow problems for parents.
