Junior School Bulletin Issue 7 / 20 May 2016
Junior School News NAPLAN Last week the students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 completed NAPLAN tests. In talking to a number of students at the conclusion of the tests the overwhelming response from the students was “That wasn’t that bad”. It was reassuring to hear that the students weren’t overwhelmed by the test or made it into something that these tests are not meant to be. We look forward to getting the results of these tests later in the year. As a College we will analyse the results to look for trends, strengths and areas for growth. We will also compare the student results with other data that class teachers have collected via other means. As always, the tests give us a snap shot of each child’s performance for that day, but it needs to be compared to all of the work that they do throughout the year. Year 5 Camp The students in Year 5 have just returned from their camp to Coolum. They had the opportunity to challenge themselves with surfing lessons, brave the flying fox and orienteer their way around the campsite using coordinates. In the evenings the students enjoyed the campfire and bush dancing. A camp for three days allows the students to develop social and emotional skills such as teamwork, collaboration, leadership and problem solving that cannot be replicated in the same way in the classroom.
Walk for East Timor Last Tuesday, Junior School students participated in the Walk for East Timor walkathon. The students completed laps around the oval and for every lap that they completed, sponsors donated a sum of money. The $1398.05 raised will go towards building houses in Bahareduk, East Timor. East Timorese communities are still impacted by the independence movement of last century. It is a really practical way for the students to take action, help others and make a difference in the lives of others.
ELC Family Service A reminder that this Sunday 22 May 9.00am is the ELC Family Service. Students in the ELC will be assisting with the service, and as always all families are warmly welcome.
