Junior School News Welcome Back Welcome back to school for Term 2. I hope that you were able to spend some quality time together as a family. The season of Easter reminds us of Jesus dying on the cross, but more importantly that he rose from death three days later. At the end of last Term, the 3-way conferences were conducted and students were able to identify their strengths and areas for growth. In a growth mindset, feedback from the teacher is useful because it relates to their current ability. The start of a term is a great time for the students to look at that feedback from the teacher and set goals for their growth. ANZAC Day This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli and as a result this year’s ANZAC Day march will be a special event. The Junior School staff and students commemorated ANZAC day with a service in the Worship Centre. It was special seeing all of the students wearing their red poppies.
NAPLAN The NAPLAN tests will be conducted in May for Junior School students in Years 3 and 5. As the tests get closer, you will probably see a lot more media attention given to them which can cause a little bit of anxiety for your child/ren. Please reinforce to your child/ren: 1. It is simply another day at school. 2. The results of the tests will give some information on how they performed on that test on that day. It is another assessment tool that will give their teacher further information about their learning. 3. We can use that feedback to help grow, get better and improve their learning. As a College we do not teach to the test. The well balanced and challenging curriculum that gets the students to use higher order thinking skills to answer real problems is preparation enough. However, we do spend some time teaching the children the skill of answering questions on a test like this. FETE Just a reminder that the St Andrews Fete is coming up on Saturday 16 May. It promises be a great day. Please refer to the attached pages at the end of this bulletin from the P & F for more information about the Fete. The upcoming Fete on Saturday 16 May will necessitate the closing of the Prep to Year 4 classrooms at 12pm on Friday 15 May. Please refer to the more detailed note with further instructions that was emailed to families this week. Darrin Schumacher Head of Junior School darrins@salc.qld.edu.au

Canberra Rebate Ammendum In our last bulletin we inadvertantly published an incorrect amount of subsidy for our Year 6 recent trip to Sydney and our nation’s capital city, Canberra. The figure is $60 per student funded under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.
