Junior School Bulletin Issue 4 / 18 March 2016 Some interesting quotes from the speakers about leadership:

Junior School News Sydney and Canberra Tour Year 6 students from our College have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Some of the places that we visited in Canberra were Old and New Parliament House, High Court of Australia, National Museum, Australian Institute of Sport, CSIRO, Royal Australian Mint and the Australian War Memorial. In Sydney we visited The Rocks area, site of the first settlement of Sydney and the conclusion to our trip was a scenic tour of the iconic Sydney Harbour. The College received many favourable reports about the conduct of our students, who were an absolute credit to their families and the College. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the College upon completion of the excursion. Junior School Captains The Junior School Captains had a very engaging and inspirational day at the Young Leaders Forum in Brisbane last Monday. They were encouraged in their leadership positions to make a difference this year by doing the ‘little things well’.

“The Big Things in life are often made up of a series of little things.” - Hannah Pruss “Little things add up over time.” - Nathan (Dubsy) Want “Think about a good leader who you know - look at their characteristics and emulate them.” - Commissioner Ian Stewart We look forward to seeing how our Junior School leaders will do lots of little things well to make a big impact on the people around them. ANZAC Day March Soon after school starts in Term 2, we will be preparing for the ANZAC Day March. As has been the custom for a number of years, all students from St Andrews are invited to march behind the College banner as part of the Burleigh March. This is a wonderful way to acknowledge the sacrifices earlier generations of Australians made in service to their country. Students wishing to march are asked to wear their full College uniform (including formal hats). We will meet on the corner of James and West streets by 9.00am Monday 25 April, in preparation for the March which begins at 9.30am. As a group, we will then sit with other schools for the service at the Cenotaph, which should conclude by 10.30am. Please be aware that parking may be difficult. It is highly recommended carpooling and/or allowing enough time to park nearby and walk into Burleigh. Three Way Conferences The Three Way Conferences are one way in which we report to you your child’s progress at school. It was great to see so many parents taking up this opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher. From my walk through it looked like there was very healthy dialogue and the students were affirmed in the areas that they are working well on and identified goals for further improvement. Years 4-6 Cross Country We are looking forward to the upcoming Years 4-6 Cross Country next week. Cross Country is an important activity that helps our students to develop persistance and tenacity. It is also a real House Event because where each member of the House places has a significant bearing on the final result. The Carnival begins at 9:00am at Schuster Park. Junior School Redevelopment Update Work is progressing well in the area under the ELC and the builders expect that the Year 1 students will be able to move into their new classrooms in mid-June.
