Junior School News Sydney and Canberra Tour Students from our school have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Some of the places that we visited in Canberra were Old and New Parliament House, High Court of Australia, National Museum, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, Government House, Royal Australian Mint and the Australian War Memorial. In Sydney we visited the Taronga Park Zoo. It was a truly magnificent trip and all

had a great time. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Year 4 Camp The students in Year 4 have returned from a fantastic camp at Lake Ainsworth. It is a great opportunity for them to develop resilience and independence. They managed to have a fantastic time: • Sailing the high seas of Lake Ainsworth • Making delicious Aussie damper and cooking it over a fire • Reviewing bicycle safety when riding on the road and putting it into practice • Orienteering around the camp using compasses • Exploring a marine habitat when snorkeling In Brief Celebrating the Good Stuff • Last week the students all dressed in Pink, Yellow and Lavender to raise money for Cancer Research. We raised a total of $1,397.75. • A number of students took their own action to raise money for charities of their choice. It was great to see their initiative and thinking of others. • The Picnic in the Park was a great night out for all. The weather held out just long enough for us to have a great night. The Middle and Senior School students kept us entertained. Thank you to the P and F for organising this fantastic event. Darrin Schumacher Deputy Principal Head of Junior School

learning areas available for staff to use for a variety of different purposes. This month, Year 1 have been utilising the ‘Learning Connections’ area for small group rotations. Students have been inquiring into how to maintain a healthy body and mind and looking into how their daily choices can influence their health.

The Lord has kept every promise He ever made to you. Not one of them has been broken. – Joshua 23:14 (CEV) Has someone ever made a promise to you that they failed to keep? I assume the answer is “yes” because when it comes to promises, human beings have a bad track record. We make promises all the time to ourselves or to others but keeping them is not always easy. So many things get in the way – the demands of work or life and our own weaknesses, mistakes and habits, to name a few. Last Sunday the St Andrews community gathered together in our first Community Worship Service for the year to explore the topic of God’s promises and how these differ in quality and nature to our own. God’s promises are something that you can trust and hold onto even, or especially, in times of difficulty. To my knowledge, God has fulfilled every promise He has ever made, as recorded in the Bible – and there is no indication this is going to change. Some of the promises in the Bible were specific to a certain time or place or people. However, another subset of promises belong to all humankind – to you and to me. The greatest promise God has made to everyone is the promise of forgiveness. He has promised to forgive your sins, no matter how great, no matter how bad and help you make a new start (Luke 24:46-46; 2 Corinthians 5:17). This is good news! Some mistakes we make in life are trivial or small, but sometimes we really make a mess of things and if we can think of moments like that then we can be grateful for God’s promise of forgiveness. At the service, I gave away paper copies of this promise so that people had something they could literally hold onto – but I hope that whether you have this promise printed or not, that you understand that this promise is for you, too. The Community Worship Services (formerly College Services) that we are holding this year have been redesigned to be a place for any member of the community (school, church, aged care) to come and experience the love of God in worship with others. Please join us on one of the Sundays this year and hear more about our amazing and promisekeeping God. Our next Community Worship Service is on Sunday 18 March at 9.00am in the Worship Centre. During these lessons, students used an app called The Human Body by Tiny Bop. This app is full of surprises to keep students engaged, like where does the food you eat go? What happens to your nervous system when a mosquito

bites you? Apps can be wonderful learning tools to enhance student understanding as they have 3D visuals and the combination of interactive multimedia materials with sound, video, text and picture.

Library Lovers Day Thank you to all the students who entered the Library Lovers Day Competition. We had over fifty entries! We love the library because – at first break we can do lots of activities; we read great books that take our minds on amazing adventures; we learn and get smarter in the library and we get inspired to write our own books one day. (Sahara Blanchard and Ruby Marsden 3C) Winners include: • Claudia Mewing 6A • Thomas Canning 4A • Sahara Blanchard 3C • Ruby Marsden 3C • Freya Hudson 1C
