Junior School Bulletin

Junior School News Mufti Day/Bake Sale This Term’s Mufti Day pink and yellow theme was to assist College families who have experienced significant health issues this year and to raise awareness of Cancer. Over $2000 was raised and will go to those who are suffering as a result of illness. Eva Lyall, Chelsea Lewis, Jiya Donaldson, Marley Mavroidaki, Giselle Courtney, Bellah Lawlor, Riley Thomson, Brianna Wright, Sam Butterworth, Pratika Rajaguru, Isla Slattery and Claudia Mewing decided to conduct a bake sale and together they raised another $250 which they donated to this cause as well. We are very proud of the girls for taking action to do something good for someone else.

Junior School Captains This week we announced the Junior School, House and Cultural Captains for 2016. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all students who nominated and put themselves forward for election and congratulate those chosen to lead the Junior School.

The students elected to lead the Junior School are: Junior School Captains Sienna Dalby and Timothy Hornsey Eliza Thorpe and Thomas Kilmartin Cultural Captains Charlee Cosgriff and Seth Marshall House Captains Binging - Bronte Robins and Fynn Andrews Gowandi - Scarlett McMurtry and Dylan Franklin-Platt Jubi - Sienna Young and Oliver Thackwell Wardjam - Mya Dunn and Kyle Moss Whilst these are some of the formal leadership positions, students across the Junior School have the opportunity to exercise leadership in many different situations as the year unfolds.

Year 1 Family Service On Sunday we will have our final Family Service for the year.

For the students involved these services help to make links to their Christian Studies units. These services help to build community and really add something special to our Sunday Worship. Thank you for joining us at the worship service.

Presentation Night Just a reminder that our Junior School Presentation Night will be held on Monday 30 November beginning at 5:00pm. This is an excellent opportunity for us to celebrate a successful year. We acknowledge award recipients and honour the Year 6 students as they enter into their next phase of the College journey.

Junior School Library Earlier in the week I spent some time in the Junior School Library. It was a hive of activity. There were students reading a good book enjoying the stories that were contained within, others were drawing. There were some students researching information for their Unit of Inquiry. A group of Year 3 students were programming beebots, while some Year 6 groups were trying to control spheros. It was wonderful to see the level of engagement as the students took advantage of the range of opportunities available to them.

Prep Assembly It was lovely to see the Prep students present their learning at our Assembly last Tuesday. They shared with the Junior School their understanding of “How Plants Grow”. Whilst it was a very cute presentation the extent of their learning was also clearly evident. The depth of learning our students experience is a real feature of the PYP.

Chaplains Chat Celebrating the Gospel As I write this, October 31 has just recently come and gone…. This time last year I led a Junior School chapel time based around Halloween. It is not difficult to connect Halloween with Christian teachings because it originally was associated with All Saints Day which is November 1.

This year though, I turned my attention to another historical event – Reformation Day. This is the day that is celebrated in memory of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses or 95 points of objection to church practice 498 years ago. This act by Luther was momentous, and changed the course of history.

In 2 years, 2017 will mark 500 years since this important event.

The Reformation that followed Luther’s objections involved all sorts of aspects – political, social and spiritual, but for us now in 2015 the most important element is the fact that we have a very clear focus on the Gospel. Celebrating the Gospel are the first three words of our College Mission statement. The Gospel we celebrate today was all but lost 500 years ago amongst layers of tradition and man-made rules of the church at the time. These rules involved people being encouraged to pay money to help ensure theirs and others position in heaven.

It was these types of teachings that Martin Luther objected to and through scripture/the Bible, he was able to clearly set out that a relationship with God is based entirely on God’s grace. This means that God extends His love to us and we receive this through faith. His love for us is a free undeserved gift, and is life changing. As a Lutheran school we are blessed to have clearly stated in our Mission Statement that we Celebrate the Gospel. As we do this week in and week out God strengthens our connection with Him and his saving work continues on as it has done down through the centuries for all those who put their trust in His Grace.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School & PYP Coordinator As year levels begin a new journey of inquiry, one of the most important aspects teachers intentionally plan is the ‘Tuning In’ phase of the inquiry. The focus is not about tuning in to the topic but rather tuning in to the students’ thinking. Teachers develop learning engagements that provide opportunities for them to determine: • • •

insightful information for the teachers to ascertain what students already think and know about financial business in our society and whether students were concerned about the impact of their business decision making. Students may demonstrate misconceptions or uncertainty in this tuning in phase but it does allow the teachers to plan further learning experiences to challenge student thinking and to engage with deeper inquiry!

Once teachers gather evidence of what their students’ initial thoughts are, this information then informs the next phase of the learning. When ‘tuning in’ the teachers themselves are active inquirers as they discover the current ways students see things. This stage of the inquiry process also allows students to ‘tune in’ to their own thinking.

Teachers will often use a powerful provocation to ‘hook’ student engagement and, again, it is used as a means to explore the thinking of students. Provocations have the potential to reveal valuable information about what students already know and connect with, their level of thinking and their motivation toward the learning.

Our Year 5 students have recently commenced their new unit under the transdisciplinary theme ‘How We Organise Ourselves.’ They are inquiring into the central idea, ‘The economic decisions within a society have an impact on human-kind and the environment.’ The unit started with a provocation that provided the opportunity for students to act as entrepreneurs, that provided setting up their own business to make the largest profit possible. This provided

The ICT Mentors were trained to teach the younger students to use the following robotics in the library this week. These students have been wonderful in this role this year.

Junior Library News October is International Libraries month and students were asked to consider ‘What makes our library great?’. When you examine the library of the past, and then consider the possibilities of the libraries of the future, key elements of change will be in the way that the physical building is being used and the types of activities that occur there.

The Junior School Library is no exception to the changes that can be seen globally in library spaces. The place of technology in the daily life of a library is obvious and deeply embedded in all we do.

In the Junior School Library this week we have been exploring the potential of robotics in education. When looking at the Programme of Inquiry it is easy to make connections across the units with these emerging technologies (Year 1 How We Express Ourselves, Year 2 and Year 3 Where We Are in Place and Time and Year 4 How the World Works).

Japanese News

Chess News

Skype provides a way for us to communicate and learn from others. P1 had the opportunity to Skype with Fuzoku Elementary School during their Japanese class. The students in Japan introduced to us the things that they like to do – skipping, walking on stilts, singing and playing the piano.

2016 Chess Round Up Chess in the Junior School continues to go from strength to strength. This term, we had 9 players attend the Gold Coast Individual Age Championships. Overall, our students scored 34 points out of 63 (31W 6D 26L) Special mention goes to Alex Hacker (5.5 out of 7) who finished 7th out of 98 players in the 2007 division.

It was a very interesting and interactive session. Well done to all students in P1 for representing St Andrews in such an outstanding way.

Overall, participation in the Chess Club was very strong in 2016 and our achievements in the various tournaments held throughout the year were outstanding. In fact, in every tournament entered, St Andrews had at least one player earn enough points to receive a medal or merit award. An outstanding benchmark to have and hopefully exceed in future.

Many thanks to all the players, parents and our coach Mr F who have supported the Chess Club this year. We look forward to seeing everyone battling it out on the boards again next year.

PAT 2016 As we start to look forward to 2016, a few reminders about PAT Tuition.

1. Unless we receive a Cancellation Form all existing PAT Students they will roll over into 2016 timetables. If you do not wish for your child to continue – please complete the online Cancellation Form on the website. Please do not just tell the PAT Tutor as this information is not always passed on to Anne who is doing the timetables.

2. Students in Year 3 Strings and Mini Musos are reminded to return the forms that were sent home last week to ensure they are timetabled in for 2016.

3. If you are considering enrolling in 2016 – please complete the application form this term as we are starting the timetabling process towards the end of this term. We do have finite places in our programs and it is a case of first in best dressed.

Mini Musos Recruitment Afternoon Last week Year 3 came up to the Senior Music Studios to try a variety of Band Instruments as part of our recruitment process for Mini Musos 2016. Within this program, selected students are offered the hire of an instrument and group lessons for the year for a $100 levy. Students also receive a Mini Musos shirt and are expected to play in the Mini Muso Ensemble, which rehearses on a Wednesday morning in the RBT. Offers will be made to successful students in the coming weeks via email to parents.

AGM (Annual General Meeting) This year’s AGM is on Wednesday 25 November 7.00pm in the CRC (Cecile Ryan Centre).

You are guaranteed you will get the items you need and you can exchange sizes in January if needed (providing items are returned in a saleable condition). At the meeting all current positions are declared vacant and a vote will be taken for the positions from the nominations received.

All nominations must be submitted 30 days before the AGM to the President. The nomination form is available on the College website under the P & F section.

IT News Parent CYOD (Choose Your Own Device) Portal The College is pleased to announce the launch of our new online portal to purchase technology for students.

The College has partnered with “The School Locker”, a division of Harvey Norman, to provide education pricing on student IT devices available for purchase through an online portal. The School Locker and the College have been negotiating with a range of vendors to setup a Parent “Choose Your Own Device” portal to assist in purchasing devices for their children. These devices have been preselected to meet the requirements for learning in the classroom.

Participation in this program is voluntary. The College is simply providing an online option for parents who may be looking to purchase a new device for their child/ren and require assistance.

The School Locker will be running the program and delivery of devices for parents will be directly through The School Locker as the provider. Payment can be made online via credit card or with Flexirent finance options available. The finance options available can be beneficial when combined with accidental damage protection. The College is simply promoting this as a service to make decisions and purchasing easier for families and is not involved in the contract of purchase and supply.

Students/Parents need to register with a student advantage card to be eligible for these discounts online. These cards are available from Junior, Middle and Senior Administration areas or the IT Department in the Cecile Ryan Centre.

The College held an information session for parents on Thursday 12 November at 5.00pm in the Cecile Ryan Centre.

The devices available on the portal were on site for parents to view and test.

Important information about school bus travel for 2016 School transport is not free. However, you may be eligible for transport assistance under the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS). APPLY NOW if you intend to use a Surfside Buslines bus to get to or from school.

Frequently asked questions Can I get a bus pass?

There are a number of general criteria that apply to STAS. Where a student is eligible for STAS, there are two types of bus assistance available, distance based and Safety-Net travel.

Where do I send the form to?

Applications for 2016 can be submitted now to Surfside Buslines PO Box 3036 Robina QLD 4230 Or Email: gcschools@tagroup.net.au Who needs to apply?

If this is the first time you are applying for assistance to travel or you are moving schools, changed address, repeating a grade or are moving from primary school to secondary school you need to apply now.

Existing bus pass holders If your details will not be changing from 2015 to 2016 you do not have to reapply.

Students who hold a 2015 bus pass will be able to travel with that pass until 19 February 2016.

This allows some time for the 2016 passes to be made.

If you lose your 2015 bus pass you will have to apply to Surfside Buslines for a replacement.

How do I get my bus pass?

Surfside will process applications over the Christmas school holidays so your pass will be sent to your school for you to collect.

What if my pass hasn’t arrived by 19 Feb 2016?

Without written confirmation from TMR stating your application has been approved you will need to pay the full cost of travel. These fares are not refundable.

What if I am not eligible for STAS? The Queensland Government offers children and students a 50% concession fare by purchasing a TransLink gocard. Passengers aged 5-14 years are eligible for a child concession fare.

Full time students 15 years or older are eligible for a Student Concession gocard. To receive a concession fare, students must always carry an approved Queensland student photo identification card or wear an official Queensland school uniform.

Timetables Use the TransLink journey planner to plan your travel to and from school. There are helpful tips on how to plan and how to catch a bus. Alternatively telephone 13 12 30.
