From the Head of Junior School Celebration and Commemorations The students in Year 3 have been working on a unit with a central idea “People recognise the important events through celebrations and commemorations�. It is a unit of work that looks at the historical and social importance of these events and how they can help to develop a nation’s culture. Last Wednesday, in the Multi Purpose Hall, the students were able to demonstrate some of their learning to their parents and other Junior School students through a celebration and commemorations performance. It was great to see so many of the younger students learn the importance of these events from the Year 3 children and their parents joining in on the fun. At the Junior School awards ceremony earlier in the week we were able to recognize those students who had achieved academic success, enjoyed some of the artistic abilities of our students who performed for us, acknowledged and thanked the students who have given significant service to the Junior School and celebrated with those students who have been outstanding citizens.
The students in Year 6 are celebrating the end of one significant phase in their lives when they move from Junior School into Middle School. To celebrate this milestone in their lives, the students enjoyed Year 6 Graduation at Colonial Golf Club. They all looked very grown up as they graduatied and then enjoyed a formal meal and the company of their friends. Last Friday we said farewell to the Year 12 students at their graduation assembly. As is tradition, the Junior school students formed a guard of honour as the Year 12 students exited the chapel for the last time. It was pleasing to see at this graduation assemby, a large number of students being granted scholarships or given direct entry into Griffith, Bond
Christmas Holidays The Christmas holidays allows students an opportunity to rest after a very busy and rewarding year. I have seen amazing growth in the students in their academic ability and maturity. I would encourage all students to find a balance in their holidays. Make sure that you make time to play, socialize with others, chill out and read. I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every member of our College community a very happy and blessed Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. From the Deputy Head of Junior School & PYP Coordinator As the 2014 academic year comes to a close, we have certainly experienced a recent whirlwind of special events as we celebrate the many achievements of our incredible students. I am always so impressed with the progress students make each year and the many talents they have been abundantly blessed with from above. I recently compiled a PowerPoint presentation for our final Junior School Assembly for 2014. It was an opportunity to reflect on the array of experiences and learning engagements that have enhanced student understanding of what it means to be a global citizen and a lifelong learner. Students were able to demonstrate on a daily basis the attributes or dispositions of the IB Learner Profile through various activities:
Through our units of inquiry, our students became knowledgeable across a broad range of disciplines.
Our students developed their natural curiosity and developed more skills to become independent learners and inquirers. Our students had opportunities to understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and became open-minded to the perspective of other communities.
Our students were caring in so many ways by showing empathy towards the needs of others. Students made a personal commitment to act to make a difference to the lives of others. Charli (pictured) shows her support for the people of Cambodia on one of our mufti days.
The students were thinkers when we used our creativity to approach complex problems and make decisions.
ELC News The construction team have been working just about day and night to complete our state of the art building and playground. I am extremely grateful for their hard work and effort in building a very special place for the future generation of St Andrews.
Our students were communicators by confidently expressing their ideas and understanding. Congratulations to all of our students for the accomplishments they have achieved throughout the year whether they have been academic, sporting, cultural or interpersonal. May I also take this opportunity to thank the teachers for everything they do to facilitate student learning. We have remarkable teachers who demonstrate a passion for developing curious inquirers. I am continually amazed by their desire to support each and every child in their class. Thank you also to the support staff who offer their valuable assistance to staff and children each and every day. Finally, to our superb parents and guardians, we have truly appreciated the support and the partnership we have experienced with you throughout the year. As it has been said ‘TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More!’ At St Andrews, we have achieved a great deal in 2014. In closing, may peace, happiness and goodwill be with you and your family not only at Christmas, but throughout the year and beyond.

Chaplains Chat GRACE! I had the privilege of leading MS/SS worship in Week 4 around the theme of ‘Gratefulness for Grace that transforms our tainted hearts’. My preparation for the time involved questioning students across Year 7-12 about what they understood by the term ‘Grace’. A Year 10 fellow, conveyed a wonderful picture of Grace as it relates to how we live our lives, when he said – ‘Grace is when you extend love and care towards someone when they don’t deserve it.’ This is exactly how God treats us. None of us deserve God’s blessing due to our good behaviour or intentions. Even Mother Teresa fell short of being good enough to receive God’s love based on her performance – and yet our God extends his love to all of us, despite our sinfulness. This is Grace in its most amazing form. God’s love and care for us who do not deserve it. This extension of Grace to us works miracles in our world. It has the power to make beauty out of ugly things and find goodness in everything as U2 sang in a song titled ‘Grace’, 15 years ago. As we await the celebration of Christ’s arrival in the world at Christmas time it is helpful to remember that this historic event is the pivotal act of Grace performed by the allpowerful God of the universe. He chose to extend His love and acceptance to all of humanity through joining us in our joys and sorrows. It is this act of Grace that sets Christianity apart from all other religions. We are so blessed to receive God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. We are assured of a place in God’s Kingdom now and into eternity through God’s goodwill and this empowers us to extend Grace towards others. May our celebration of God’s Grace towards us through Christ’s arrival in our world be truly heartfelt and joyful this year and I pray each of us can allow it to move us to be people who extend Grace towards ourselves and others in the New Year.
Art News PAT 2015 As we move towards the end of the year, a few housekeeping points to note for students involved in our PAT program. Please note that unless a Cancellation Form is received, continuation is assumed. Please note this information needs to come to Performing Arts Admin, not the PAT Teacher as they are not responsible for timetables. The Cancellation Form is available on the College Website under The Arts. If your child has participated in Mini Musos or Year 3/4 Strings in 2014, an Intention to Continue letter should have gone home. Please ensure that this is returned so that your child is included on the 2015 Timetable and (where requested) an Instrument is ordered. If your child is offered a place in the 2015 Mini Musos (offers sent home Week 8), please ensure that you respond via email to performingarts@salc.qld.edu.au by the date indicated on the form. It is always an absolute joy to see our young performers on stage. Special thanks to our wonderful PAT teachers and Paul Oakley-Grant for their efforts to ensure that our young people have these opportunities to share their talents.
Graeme Schache Chaplain Children’s Theatre – A Collaboration Across the SubSchools It is always a wonderful experience to watch Senior and Junior Students working together. Recently Year 4 and the Year 10 Drama class had the opportunity to do this with a Dramatic Reading of How The Grinch Stole Christmas to Year 3s.
The Year 10s worked in small groups to develop scenes featuring Year 4 students – who had the opportunity to sing, dance and perform.

Student Achievments Congratulations to Sophia Wheeler and Grace Ollerenshaw in Year 1 who have been chosen to appear in Channel 7s new TV programme for pre schoolers called ‘Pipsqueaks”. The girls travelled to Channel 7 studios for a day of filming at Mt Cootha which was such an amazing experience for them. Watch out for them in the mornings. Speech and Drama Exams Congratulations to the following students who recently completed their Trinity College, London Speech and Drama exams.
Sports Awards Evening Our Annual Years 4-12 Sports Awards Evening was held in the Ruth Butler Theatre Monday 17 November. Our Guest Speaker, Paralympics Basketballer and Australian Captain Bridie Kean, gave a most entertaining, educational and inspirational presentation. Many attendees have commented on what an amazing person Bridie is. We also had Tom Nicholls (Gold Coast Suns) and Jon Stimpson (Qld Cricket) assist with award presentations. A big thank you to Bede Young and Koala Koaches for sponsoring $50 Gift Vouchers from Intersport, Elanora (The Pines). We were able to present these vouchers to our Koala Koaches All-Rounder Winner, Jenna Mobberley, our Sport Captains, Kye Wylde and Annika Schache and our Sports Star Awardees, Jack Read, Sarah-Anne Hornsey (JS), Max Indriawan, Katie Hayward (MS) and Kane Richards, Tia Faulkner (SS). It was fantastic to see so many members of our College Community in attendance, including ex-student and Olympic swimmer James Roberts. I hope you enjoyed the celebration of our prominent sporting achievers for 2014. We will have more information in the upcoming STAR publication.

Jump Rope for Heart Well done to Mrs Walker and everyone who skipped for outstanding participation in the Jump Offs recently. Huge congratulations for all your efforts to those who participated in the fund raising. Prizes will be arriving toward the end of this Term or first thing next year. Cheerleading Bethany and Zoe Jones and Marli Grainger recently travelled to New Zealand where, as part of the Level 2 Squad from Mega Cheer, they achieved a 2nd place. Gymnastics Thomas Kilmartin competes through Gold Coast Gymnastics club at Level 4 Mens Gymnastics. Thomas has trained extremely hard and has qualified for regional, and State level individual comps this year. In addition to this, because of his scores at these events, he was selected to represent the team at National Clubs in Sydney, where the team came 2nd overall at the National Competition. Aquathlon Tom Atkinson recently won the Regional Aquathlon Race for his age group. He had a great race and was very happy with his win. He has now qualified to represent South Coast at the State Championships in Hervey Bay next February. Golf Emily Martin had her final tournament for the year recently at the Byron Bay Junior Open. She had a great game and won both the Girls Gross and Girls Nett scores. The NSW Northern Rivers Junior Golf Competition also had the end of year awards presentation which saw her achieve some fantastic results as below. • Order of Merit Nett Winner • Order of Merit Gross Runner up • Most Improved Cadet Girl – since March this year she has reduced her 9 hole handicap by 14 shots. Futsal Lachlan Anderson has been selected in the Gold Coast Under 10s Futsal Team. This is a vigorous process and starts with over 60 very talented players trialling over a weekend. If your child has a ‘growth spurt’, sizes can be exchanged in January providing items are returned in a saleable condition. purchase more uniforms in January, please submit your items before the end of term. All items must be clean & ironed (not damaged, stained, faded or showing excessive wear). TFA are pleased to bring you a school holiday program for children from U6 to U14. The morning of each camp will focus on development. Our professional coaches will deliver sessions using skills practices, technical practices, small sided games, functional practices and phases of play. After morning tea the focus is on fun games, testing the individual skills of players in a competition environment. This section of the day will also include the skills tests, where players are giving scores for topics such as passing, dribbling, lofted pass and shooting. After lunch the focus is on the world cup games. Players are placed into teams and play out for the prestigious title of being crowned world cup champions. Uniforms for 2015 Dear Parents and Students, To assist you in your preparation for 2015, we would like to share some important information with you regarding Uniforms. As your child moves from one year level to the next, there are sometimes changes to the required uniform. Below are details of the changes that will affect your child if he/she is moving into the following year levels in 2015.
PREP Prep Students wear the sports uniform every day. There is no formal uniform. Sports Hat ($15) House Shirt ($24) Sports Shorts ($20) Sports Socks ($7.80) Tracksuit Jacket ($60) Tracksuit Pants (optional $35) College school bag ($45-50), Library Bag ($12.50) and Hand Towel ($4.50). Predominantly white sports shoes (velcro or lace up) are also required but not sold in the Uniform Shop.
YEAR 1 • •
A Formal Uniform is now required to be worn 3 days a week. The Sports Uniform (same as Prep uniform) is worn 2 days a week.

Boys only - the navy elastic backed shorts change to zip up formal shorts ($30) worn with a regulation black belt ($20). Regulation St Andrews swimwear or athletics singlet /shorts may be required if selected to compete in Inter-Lutheran and/or District competitions from Yrs 4 -12.

The formal uniform is now worn 4 days a week – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The navy sports uniform is now worn to school on Thursdays for interschool sport. The sports uniform is to be brought to school and changed into for all PE lessons and sports electives. The floppy sports hat may still be worn or can be replaced with a baseball cap ($15). Girls - the formal uniform changes to a skirt ($55), blouse ($42) and formal sockettes ($7.80). Navy 70 denier tights are optional in winter ($7-8). Boys - long grey trousers ($35) are optional in Term 2 & 3. Boys and Girls both wear low ankle sports socks ($7.80).
YEAR 8 & 9 (no changes YEAR 10 • • • • •
All senior students require a College blazer which must be brought to school for photos in the first week of 2015. Please contact the Uniform Shop immediately if you have not already ordered or arranged a blazer. The blazer is worn to and from school in Terms 2 and 3. The formal jumper is now only required for extremely cold days, worn under the blazer. Girls - the formal uniform remains the same with the addition of a button-on tie ($20). Boys - the formal shirt changes to a style suitable for a tie (no tartan trim on the pocket $30) The boys winter formal uniform (terms 2 & 3) comprises of the senior short or long sleeve shirt ($30/$35), College tie ($20), grey trousers ($35) and plain navy business socks. These items must be purchased before school starts as they are required for photos.
YEAR 11 & 12 - no changes _______________________________________________________________________ NB: All students require a tracksuit jacket to wear with their sports uniform (optional Senior Jersey for Year 12) and a formal jumper to wear with their formal uniform (Blazer for Years 10-12).
