Junior School News Captains The Year 5 students applying for positions of Cultural, House and Junior School Captains have been through a rigorous process of applications, interview and speeches in front of 300 students and then a public vote. The students were outstanding and represented themselves very well. So many of the students who applied could have filled the positions.

It is my great pleasure to announce that the following students have been elected Junior School Captains for 2018.

We know that they will do a great job, be great role models and represent the Junior School well.

School into Middle School. To celebrate this milestone, the students enjoyed a night out at Palmer Colonial Golf Course. They all looked very grown up as they enjoyed a formal meal and the company of their friends. Next Friday the Year 6 students will have their final chapel service. This is a significant event and milestone for them.

Presentation Night The annual Junior School Presentation night will be held on Tuesday 28 November beginning at 6:30pm. Year 6 students, Awardees and Performers are asked to arrive at 5:45pm. It will be held at the Gold Coast Arts Centre. We will be able to celebrate the achievements of the students and acknowledge the Year 6 students as they end their Junior School journey and begin life as a Middle School student.

Farewell Last Friday we said farewell to the Year 12 students at their closing assembly. As is tradition, the Junior School students formed a guard of honour as the Year 12 students left the Worship Centre for the last time. It was very encouraging to hear that a large number of students had completed all of their schooling at St Andrews. It was also announced that a number of students have been given direct entry into various universities, others have been given direct entry into TAFE courses, and some have completed Certificate III courses whilst studying Year 12.

Christmas Holidays The Christmas holidays allows the students an opportunity to rest after a very busy and rewarding year. I have seen amazing growth in the students in both their academic ability and maturity. I would encourage all students to find a balance in their holidays. Make sure that you make time to play, socialize with others, chill out and read.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every member of our College community a very happy and blessed Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that you celebrate with people you love.

I look forward to finishing the year off strongly and seeing you all back in the New Year.

Chaplains Chat As our College year draws to a close we celebrate the completion of a chapter in the lives of the young people who are the focus of all that happens within the walls of St Andrews.

This celebration extends all the way from ELC students ‘graduating’ into Prep for 2018 through to our Year 12s graduating from 13 years of formal schooling to move onto the next chapter of their lives. Throughout all of the ‘graduations’ we celebrate at this time, there is a sense of change and progress. Students make their way through St Andrews with their eye on the next chapter that awaits them. The new challenges ahead.

Generally, our students look forward to the year beyond where they are presently with a certain reassurance that it will be a positive and exciting time ahead. They are able to look forward in such a manner because they know they will be safe within the confines of our College. They know that they will be safe because their teachers have ensured their well-being and the staff do this through their commitment to our mission statement of Celebrating the Gospel, Nurturing the Individual and Empowering life-long learning.

At this time of the year there are always lots of mixed feelings about endings and beginnings: • Families are often looking to special family times together or memorable holidays, free from the constant routines of school days.

• Students are sad at the thought of losing good friends or missing their most favourite teacher ever!!

• Teachers look forward to finishing the rigorous demands that the end of a school year brings, yet will miss the students they have formed strong bonds with over the year.

• Many of our young ELC students are excited about moving to Prep in the “Big School” but will be sad to leave friends and nurturing staff behind.

• Our Year 6 students have reached the end of their Junior School and PYP journey but are looking forward to their next steps into Middle School.

The foundation of all the ‘good stuff’ within our College the sense of safety and security, of purpose, the living out of community - is Christ and His great love for us. He is the one who brings an inexhaustible supply of love into our midst.

He is the one who brings joy to our hearts as we rejoice in the triumphs of those about us. He is the one who gives us peace when all we want to do is rip into someone who has offended us either intentionally or unintentionally. He is the one who works patience in our midst as we deal yet again with the same problem with hope that there will be a change for the better.

As we race towards another Christmas it is this Christ, God’s son whose birth we celebrate with family gatherings, presents and all manner of merry making. We at St Andrews are so fortunate to have His direct involvement within our College all year long. He is the cornerstone, the solid rock of our community. I pray there is opportunity for you to celebrate with your family over the Christmas season that He is the Prince of Peace and King of Kings - God with us - Immanuel.

Junior Library News Part of my role as a Teacher Librarian is to work collaboratively with classroom teachers with their Units of Inquiry. This term I have had the privilege of working closely with Year 2 and Year 4 on a variety of exciting projects.

Year 2 Year 2 students have been inquiring into how living things grow and change through a life cycle in the transdisciplinary theme - How the World Works. Students worked through the research cycle, identifying key words, taking notes using dot points and then putting these notes into their own sentences. Some students then chose to present their lifecycle using Bee Bots. Their task was to draw and label the stages of their lifecycle, place these stages on a blank grid and then work out the code or set of instructions for the Bee Bot to move through the stages in order. This activity required students to problem solve and use creativity.

Year 4 Students in Year 4 have been exploring the elements of art through the transdisciplinary theme – How We Express Ourselves. Students have used a variety of apps to create their own art pieces including Kaleidoscope, Camera Orange and Assembly App. Camera Orange allowed students to select different filters to photograph man-made and natural subjects. These activities encourage self-expression and creativity.

Japanese News As our 2017 school year comes to a close, I would like to thank our Year 6 Language Monitors and Hoshi Club members for their dedication and service to all things Japanese this year.

Their enthusiasm to learn Japanese and inspire others has been admirable. All the best for your continued language studies in 2018.

Performing Arts News PAT 2018 A reminder to all families that unless a cancellation form is received then PAT enrolments will automatically roll over into 2018.

The only exception to this is current Grade 3 Strings and Mini Musos who need to apply for the general PAT Program through the College website.

Ranging from our First Break Concert Series through to Evening of Song and Animi Dance Concerts it has been wonderful to see so many young people grace the stage and share their talents. Congratulations to all of our young performers and thank you to our marvellous Arts PAT Staff who dedicate themselves to supporting young people on their creative journey.

P&F News A big thank you to all those who attended the AGM on Wednesday 8 November - our best ever attended meeting!

Your support is very much appreciated and moreover, attending meetings is a great way to meet others from the school community, and to have input and hear about exciting things happening in & around the College. Uniform Shop News If you have more than two new students to fit with new uniforms for next year please ring or email the Uniform Shop to make an appointment.

2nd Hand Uniforms – A reminder to get your 2nd hand uniforms in asap if you wish to use the credit against new uniforms. Once we hit our busy period in January you may not get credits done until February. All items must be freshly washed and ironed and free of all stains and pet hair to be considered. Blazers must be freshly drycleaned with tag attached.

How to Live a Sustainable Life

Our PYP Exhibition group consists of Yuma Adachi, Michael McGuire, Romy Marais and Charli Pearse from Year 6. For the Year 6 PYP Exhibition we inquired about Sustainable Homes. We researched how individuals, families and communities share a responsibility for creating a sustainable future.

We took action during Exhibition to inform others about how they can live a more sustainable life. We created a survey to see how sustainable the Junior School Staff at St Andrews are. We used the survey results to support our research.

We want to provide parents with some ideas on creating a sustainable home.

Some of these ideas are just little things, but they all can make a difference.

How to have a Sustainable Home Design Design your home right from the start and you'll save money and the environment. Here are some simple tips: • Orientate living areas towards the northern winter sun.

• Create shaded areas and overhangs to protect the home from the direct sun.

• Position windows high for natural light and ventilation.

• Design cross-ventilation for breezes to flow throughout the house.

Energy Efficiency • Energy efficient design • Install LED and compact fluorescent lighting.

• Invest in a hot water system - either solar, gas or heat pump.

• Purchase high energy star rated appliances.

• Install insulation to regulate the indoor climate.

Water Efficiency • Install a rainwater tank • Choose AAA rated water appliances Safety and Security • Install non-slip tiles.

Social Sustainability • Install zero-threshold showers for wheelchair access.

• Have wide hallways and doorways.

• Have lever style handles are easier for people who experience disabilities.

• Design flexible rooms that can adapt to meet your changing needs.

Eco-friendly Constructions • Use recycled materials and if possible lightweight building materials for maximum energy efficiency.

• Consider bamboo flooring that is environmentally friendly.

• Use eco-friendly paints that are low-toxic.

• Choose materials with low 'embodied energy' - in other words less energy in their manufacturing process.
