Lexus From Cover ventional vehicles. Furthermore, the LF-30 Electrified employs numerous advanced technologies with a look ahead to the year 2030- such as a new-concept cockpit based on a human-centered design philosophy and a steer-by-wire system. The opacity of the side windows can be freely adjusted, providing occupants with expansive views of the surrounding scenery and a high level of privacy at night and in other situations. The color of the front face of the vehicle and luminescence patterns help identify from the outside whether the vehicle is being operated in its normal mode or in its autonomous driving mode, reflecting Lexus’ pursuit of both a high level of styling and functionality. The exterior color ‘voltaic sky’ employs a leading-edge metal-infused coating to achieve a unique quality tinted by a touch of blue-green. Innovative interior that leverages autonomous driving technologies, a newly designed cockpit, and more To manifest in a higher dimension Lexus’ fundamental human-centered philosophy, the cockpit was designed based on the new Lexus concept of “Tazuna.” Inspired by how a single rein can be used to achieve mutual under-

standing between horse and rider, the steering controller-mounted switches and head-up display have been coordinated to a high degree, creating a space that enables the driver to focus on driving while controlling various functions, such as the navigation and audio system and driving-mode selection, without having to shift one’s vision or operate manual switches. As an indication of the future image of a Tazuna cockpit, the LF-30 Electrified employs next-generation interfaces, such as gesture control and enhanced presentation of vehicle information through AR (augmented reality). The resulting interior is one that provides comfort and convenience for both driver and passengers. With the layout of the front passenger seat echoing that of a first-class seat on an airliner, the interior is one in which a sense of openness and a sense of envelopment coexist. All switches and other controls being comfortably within reach and a gesture-control large-screen display for the passenger seat add to the achievement of interior comfort and convenience. The rear seats use artificial muscle technology to mold to their occupant, and can support various modes such as reclining, relaxation, and alert functions.

A Mark Levinson® audio system creates a next-generation listening environment, in which minute speaker control establishes ideal acoustic spaces for music listening pleasure for the driver and each passenger, and speakers built into the headrests not only provide an optimal audio environment but also have a noisecancelling feature that contributes to enhanced quietness. A glass roof above the rear seats features voice control and a gesture controlled “SkyGate” display window that uses AR to display various types of information, such as a realistic star-filled sky, user-favorite videos, and even navigation. In addition to its unique design, the interior also indicates the direction of next-generation luxury by using sustainable materials to reduce environmental burden. Yakisugi (charred cedar), a traditional Japanese material, is used in the floor and steering controller while recycled metal was processed into fibers for use in creating the pleated door trim. This approach expresses Lexus’ distinctiveness and innovative spirit. With in-wheel electric motors, steering by wire, and Lexus Advanced Posture Control, the LF30 can offer a dynamic experience unlike any currently available. www.IneedOEMparts.com

To achieve a fundamental leap in vehicle performance, handling, control and driver enjoyment, the LF-30 employs numerous state-of-the-art technologies even beyond advanced posture control. In-wheel electric motors for each of the vehicle’s four wheels and low positioning of the battery enable better handling of inertia and high-level driving performance. driver to enjoy ideal driving, regardless of the road surface or driving conditions. Positioning Lexus Advanced Posture Control technology as a core element of the ‘Lexus Electrified’ vision, Lexus intends to widely apply this technology throughout its lineup of electrified vehicles. NADA Issued Its Analysis of U.S. Auto Sales and the Economy Following the Third Quarter of 2020 Through the first three quarters of the year, new-light vehicle sales were down 19% relative to the same time period in 2019. In September, raw sales volume totaled 1.34 million units, an increase of 6.1% compared to September of 2019; the increase in September’s volume was due, at least in part, to the inclusion of the Labor Day sales weekend and two additional selling days compared to the same month in 2019. “While we have continued to experience a steady recovery for new-vehicle demand year since the lows of April, vehicle sales have remained depressed compared to 2019 given a variety of factors including inventory,” said NADA chief economist Patrick Manzi. “September’s SAAR registered 16.3 million units, the first time sales have topped 16 million

units since February 2020. However, this is a decline of 4.3% compared to September 2019.” Despite a decline for all car segments, sales of pickups, SUVs and crossovers all posted gains relative to this time last year. In the first three quarters or 2020, three out of every four vehicles sold were light trucks. NADA sees strong retail sales despite an environment with falling manufacturer incentives, after peaking in April at $4,981 per unit. J.D. Power estimates that average incentive spend per unit will drop to $3,964, the first time since June 2019 when incentives have fallen below $4,000 and down approximately $300 compared to September of last year. Interest rates have also decreased,

while average monthly payments have increased. According to J.D. Power, the average interest rate on new vehicle financing was 4.4% in August 2020, down a little over 100 basis points compared to August of 2019, but up by 80 basis points from April 2020’s low of 3.6%. The average monthly payment on a new-vehicle finance contract was $582 in August 2020 – up $18 compared to August 2019. Inventory continues to be a concern for dealers; nationwide, franchised dealer inventory was 2.66 million units at the end of September – up 3.6% compared to August 2020, but down 26.7% compared to September of 2019. At present, dealers has an average 50 day supply of inventory – down one day from NADA Please Turn To Page 13

Toyota Lowers Dealer Ownership Threshold for Certified Auto Body Shops programs open to independent collision repairers, a policy that has been suggested as necessary to deliver sufficient coverage nationwide. Asked about this, Irving said the company had “relatively good coverage.” “I’d always rather have one less than one more,” Irving said. Toyota wanted to drive business to its certified shops. he said. There was “at least several years worth of work” before any criteria might need to be changed further, he said. Irving told the April IBIS USA that Toyota has learned that collision work makes a huge impact upon brand loyalty. Yet as of the April 2 event, Toyota had about 215 certified body shops fixing about 19,000 vehicles a month, according to Irving. (It had a similar shop count as of our Wednesday interview, Toyota collision operations and guest experience and retention manager Eric Mendoza

By John Huetter Toyota in August slashed its dealership ownership requirement for certified collision repair facilities from a 51 percent interest to a 15 percent stake, the OEM confirmed this week. Toyota national manager for service and collision operations George Irving Jr. said Wednesday the OEM always felt “a Toyota dealership needs to be involved” in the process. However, it learned that many different structures scenarios existed in the marketplace, such as a dealer’s relative largely owning the collision center associated with the retailer. “We surveyed the dealers” and hit upon the 15 percent threshold as one that would create significant opportunities for new certified shops while remaining acceptable to Toyota. The new setup is “in line with the times,” Irving said. Other automakers have created

said. He said this could be taken as a sort of pre-expansion baseline given the ownership rule only changed last month.) “We know that’s not enough,” Irving said. He presented a slide that estimated 222,000 Toyotas need collision service every month. “We need more,” Irving said Wednesday. But many automakers rack up more certified shops than they have sales, he said. “I fail to find the need for more outlets than we have sales outlets,” he said in a statement. “… We want to grow this thing properly.” “It’s about brand retention,” Mendoza said Wednesday. An independent shop isn’t invested in the entire ownership cycle, he said. “That’s the key differentiator” for Toyota Please Turn To Page 34

3D-Printed Parts Support Over 80,000 Miles of Chevrolet Racing 3D printing has taken on a powerful role in Chevrolet Motorsports, both on- and off-road. This season, the Corvette C8.R, INDYCAR, NASCAR Camaro and Silverado race teams have accumulated more than 80,000 miles of competition in vehicles built with 3D-printed parts. “Chevrolet has a long history of technology transfer between our motor-

sports and production teams, and this is a perfect example of our approach,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “GM’s 3D-printing capability speeds up our learning cycles and, in turn, these racetrack experiences help our additive manufacturing team move one step closer to using 3D-printed parts in production vehicles.”

Two all-new mid-engine Corvette race cars – both C8.Rs – debuted at Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 25, 2020, each equipped with 75 3D-printed parts, including the oil tank, tank inlet and cap, air conditioning driver cooling box and integrated hydration system, power steering pump bracket and 3D-Printed Please Turn To Page 26

Passat’s Sheetmetal has been redesigned, giving the car a much bolder look.

The redesigned interior

For 2020, the Passat’s sheetmetal has been redesigned, giving the car a much bolder look. The sophisticated design, which carries only the roof panel from the previous car, lends the Passat Slim headlights and a dominant grille give the 2020 Passat a focused, expressive face. The powerful promise of the front end is supported by an elegant and dynamic side treatment that C-signature air intakes in gloss black and adds vertical chrome stripes to the grille. From the side, R-line models are distinguished by badging on the flitzer and black window surrounds. At the back, lighting System (AFS) with range control and cornering lights. The 2020 Passat remains a generously-proportioned four-door sedan. R-Line® models take the basic design and up the ante. The more aggressive front end treatment features a unique bumper with sporty touch. R-Line models feature striking 19-inch, two-tone, five-spoke aluminum-alloy a rear diffuser and rear spoiler add a wheels shod with 235/40R19 rubber. Like the exterior, the redesigned interior conveys sophistication and quality. The new cockpit incorporates a horizontal design that emphasizes the interior space; the concept is prominently illustrated by a long horizontal element that

stretches the length of the dashboard, incorporating the air vents and framing a new, more contemporary instrument panel. Below, a new trapezoidal center display for the infotainment system is housed in glass, updating the look and furthering the upscale ambience. Despite its new coupe-like styling, the 2020 Passat offers the same cabin space that helped make the outgoing model popular. Here, comfort continues to be a key strength. Base-level S models come with cloth seats in Titan Black. SE trims upgrade to Volkswagen’s V-Tex leatherette, which is offered in Titan Black, Shetland Beige, and Mauro Brown. R-Line trims also adopt V-Tex, with two color options—Titan Black and two-tone Titan Black and Shetland Beige.

conveys sophistication and quality. The new cockpit incorporates a horizontal design that emphasizes the interior space. SEL models feature leather in the same color scheme as SE models. The Passat offers heated front seats as standard on SE models and above, with heated outboard rear seats standard on SEL models. A powered driver’s seat with memory is featured on SE trims and above, while SEL models further upgrade to Sport Comfort seats, which bring power to the front passenger seat as well. Additionally, SE and SEL models feature a leather- wrapped multifunction steering wheel. In R-Line models, the 2020 Passat is equipped with a leathertrimmed sport steering wheel that features shift paddles. 2021 Elantra's New Four-Door-Coupe Look

To transform the 2021 Elantra into its new four-door-coupe look, Hyundai engineers and designers had to make it longer, lower, and wider compared to the sixth-generation model. The 2021 Elantra gains 2.2 inches in overall length and 0.8 inch in its wheelbase, and the overall width is increased one inch. The overall height also dropped 0.8 inch, and the front cowl point was moved back almost two inches. These minor changes dramatically changed the shape of the car but had limited impact on cabin space. In fact, most key interior dimensions increased. Elantra Hybrid For the first time ever, a hybrid powertrain has been added to the Elantra lineup. Elantra Hybrid demonstrates Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its eco-focused lineup of products. The new Elantra Hybrid will feature a 1.6-liter GDI Atkinsoncycle four-cylinder engine. Elantra Hybrid’s permanent-magnet electric motor delivers 32 kW powered by a lithium-ion-polymer battery with 1.32 kWh of capacity positioned under the rear seats. The 1.6-liter GDI engine combined with the electric motor in

Elantra Hybrid delivers a total system output of 139 horsepower and up to 195 lb-ft of torque. This engine mates with Hyundai’s quick-shifting, six-speed, dual-clutch transmission– differentiating Elantra Hybrid from its key competitors because of its more dynamic and engaging driving experience. XL Parts To Place Additional Self-Driving Car Order With Udelv for Auto Parts Distribution in Texas XL Parts in Houston, Texas, places order for additional self-driving Autonomous Delivery Vans (ADVs) for deliveries. Following a highly successful client demo in July, Udelv is clearing the path towards full driverless delivery by 2021. World-leading Autonomous Delivery Van (ADV) company Udelv, has announced today it has signed an extension of its partnership with Texas-based automotive aftermarket parts distribution business XL Parts to use self-driving delivery vans in Houston, Texas. "This extension of our existing agreement with XL Parts is a testament to the remarkable technological achievements of Udelv's teams to advance the first true business application of autonomous vehicles, and it rewards the progress made in the field, in real world situations", says Daniel Laury, Udelv's CEO. "We are thankful to XL Parts to have given us the opportunity to make such progress." Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, Udelv has managed to improve its technology comprised of an autonomous driver assisted with a state-of-the-art integrated ultra-low latency tele-operation system and the world's first feature-

complete back-end delivery management system. The advanced delivery robotics technology is designed to enable the removal of the human factor in point-to-point deliveries before expanding to larger adjacent areas. The system has shown a remarkable ability to operate deliveries on a pre-set public road between two XL Parts-owned stores where autonomy and parking lot maneuvers are assisted with a robust tele-operation system located thousands of miles away from the field operation. The tele-operation meshes multiple sensor signals to augment camera views and relies on a series of modems for redundancy and packet distribution for ultra-low latency. The integration allows for major improvements in system reliability as well as early detection of situations that require intervention, resulting in 4x gains in miles per disengagement and overall safety and operability. Autonomy itself relies on a series of sensors that include Velodyne LiDARs, cameras, Continental radars, Novatel GPS/IMU and a powerful computing system comprised of NVIDIA GPUs and Intel CPUs capable of processing over 22 TFLOPS.

According to, Mike Odell, President & CEO of XL Parts and Marubeni Automotive Aftermarket Holdings: "We placed our trust in Udelv's technology when they reached out to us over a year ago and through our pilot project have been impressed with their ability to deliver, both literally and figuratively. Their team is highly dedicated and has continued to show steady progress. Recent events have driven increased demand for contactless delivery. XL Parts is committed to expanding its partnership with Udelv to allow us to advance our business and provide the highest quality of service at the lowest possible cost for our customers." With accelerated demand for home deliveries during COVID-19, and a serious shortage of drivers in sight, Udelv is witnessing a growing pent-up demand for driverless last- and middlemile vehicles. Retailers, distributors and logistics companies increasingly see ADVs as the main solution for keeping delivery costs in check over the next decade and are eager to get started with Udelv to experiment with the only feature-complete solution available on the market at this point.n

SBA Forgiveness Process Questioned The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Small Business Subcommittees held two back-to-back hearings entitled “Paycheck Protection Program: An Examination on Loan Forgiveness, SBA Legacy Systems, and Inaccurate Data” and “A Review of PPP Forgiveness”. In mid-August, the Small Business Association (SBA) opened the loan forgiveness portal for lenders and borrowers who participated in the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the SBA has processed only 56,000 forgiveness applications—less than one percent of the 5.2 million loans distributed through the PPP. The U.S. House of Representatives

Committee on Small Business held two hearings this week to discuss the current status and future recommendations for the Paycheck Protection Program. Subcommittee Member Jason Crow (D-CO) opened Thursday’s hearing with this statement: “Small business owners are resilient, and they are used to overcoming challenges, but the coronavirus has been a crushing blow. While the PPP has helped them retain key employees and make rent and other payments, many are anxious that their loans won’t be fully forgiven, and they will be saddled with more debt. The forgiveness forms do nothing to alleviate those concerns. They are complex, confusing, and time consuming.”

In Thursday’s hearing, SBA Chief of Staff William Manger refuted accusations that the SBA e-Tran system was unable to handle the influx of PPP loan applications, indicated that the SBA is prepared and willing to work with Congress should PPP be extended, and stated his confidence in the SBA loan forgiveness application process. However, although Mr. Manger indicated that the SBA believes the loan application process is accessible for applicants seeking forgiveness, small-business owners in Friday’s hearing gave evidence that it is not. Witness Amy Bonfig, a smallbusiness owner in Minnesota, testified SBA Please turn Page 28

The Mazda Foundation (USA) Inc. has provided a $50,000 grant to the Food Bank of North Alabama to help the organization meet the unprecedented demand for food caused by the impact of COVID-19. The funds will enable the food bank to serve 350,000 meals to residents across several North Alabama counties. The award is the second emergency donation that the Mazda Foundation has made to the food bank since the pandemic began in March. In total, the foundation has awarded $94,000 to the Food Bank of North Alabama this year, signifying its commitment to be a strong partner in the neighborhoods in which Mazda manufactures and sells its vehicles. “The pandemic has created enormous need in communities across the country,” said Jeff Guyton, president of Mazda North American Operations and chairman of the Mazda Foundation (USA) Inc. “Addressing a fundamental need like food security is a clear expression of the Mazda Foundation’s guiding principle that what matters most is one another.” Shirley Schofield, executive director of the Food Bank of North Alabama, said, “The Food Bank of North Alabama is very appreciative of this generous funding from the Mazda Foundation as we seek to respond to the growing number of people seeking food assistance, especially families who have never needed help before.” The award is one of nine grants the foundation has made this month to address food insecurity in six major metropolitan areas across the United States. In total, the grants will enable the awardees to serve an estimated 730,000 meals in the next 12 months. “Mazda Toyota Manufacturing is committed to serving as a hometown company in our North Alabama community. We appreciate the ongoing support of this commitment demonstrated by donations to important nonprofit partners, such as the Food Bank of North Alabama, by our parent companies, Mazda and Toyota,” said Masashi Aihara, president of Mazda Toyota Manufacturing. The $2.3 billion Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant is currently under construction in Huntsville. When production begins in 2021, the plant is expected to annually produce 150,000 Mazda crossover vehicles and 150,000 Toyota SUVs. The company is currently hiring team leader positions and is expected to resume hiring team member positions soon. The Mazda Foundation was founded in 1992 and has contributions exceeding $13.4 million since its founding. It supports programs from children’s organizations and food banks to animal shelters and STEM programs. The Food Bank of North Alabama is one of the largest non-profit hunger relief organizations in North Alabama, serving an 11-county area. It distributes more than 9 million meals annually through a network of 260 partners and programs that provide food to the area’s most vulnerable residents.n

3D-Printed Parts from Page 12 headlight assemblies. Fifty of these parts were designed or printed in-house by GM. Since then, the C8.Rs have accumulated nearly 8,000 miles of competition in seven races. Corvette Racing has had a dominant 2020 season, taking home five first-place wins and three 1-2 finishes, including the punishing 2020 Cadillac Grand Prix of Sebring. The INDYCAR program has also had great success leveraging 3D printing for the Chevrolet Indy V6. Components in the Chevrolet INDYCAR V6 exhaust system are 3D printed, which helps eliminate failure points in traditional manufactured components while increasing design freedom and reducing cost. Chevrolet INDYCAR engines have run over 60,000 miles since the season kicked off at Genesys 300 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth on June 6, 2020. The Silverado off-road race truck debuted at the Best in the Desert Method Race Wheels Laughlin Desert Classic in October 2019. The Silverado competes in the 1200 Stock class, which limits changes to suspension, underbody and installation of race-safety equipment. As such, the Silverado has three 3D-printed parts made in-house by GM, including a rear damper shield made with carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, which protects the rear dampers from the rocky desert terrain. Since October 2019, the Silverado race truck has accumulated 900 miles of competition in six races. Chevrolet also switched to the Camaro ZL1 1LE for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series, replacing the Camaro ZL1. Chevrolet engineers optimized the aerodynamic performance through extensive, full-scale windtunnel testing. Over 500 3D-printed prototype parts were used in testing to develop the new ZL1 1LE body. Additionally, the Camaro ZL1 1LE is equipped with a 3D-printed gear cooling duct, which has accumulated nearly 18,500 miles of competition in 27 races. “By utilizing 3D-printed parts, Chevrolet Motorsports is demonstrating the many benefits of additive manufacturing, including manufacturing efficiencies, mass reduction, parts consolidation, creativity and cost savings,” said Audley Brown, GM director, Materials Engineering, Additive Design and Manufacturing. “3D-printed parts can offer equal strength and durability to cast or milled components, which is critical for product development and design.”n 26

Mitchell Announces Enhanced AutocheX Digital Services Mitchell, a leading provider of technology, connectivity and information solutions to the Property & Casualty (P&C) claims and Collision Repair industries, today announced plans to enhance its AutocheX portfolio of consumer communication services through a joint collaboration with UpdatePromise. In addition to expanding its AutocheX consumer satisfaction index (CSI) service, Mitchell will introduce new digital solutions for repair status messaging to vehicle owners and online reputation management for collision repairers. The new products will be offered under the AutocheX brand and marketed as "AutocheX, powered by UpdatePromise". AutocheX represents an iconic brand within the collision and automoSBA From Page 20 that she, along with other small-business owners in her field, “do not understand the complicated rules, the cryptic stipulations of the application, and most [of us] do not have the luxury of time to sort it out.” Similarly, Lynn Ozer, the President of SBA Lending at Fulton Bank in Pennsylvania, testified that lenders and banks are equally confused about their role in the loan forgiveness process, and have significant fears that the money they distributed to businesses in their

Over the past 30 years, millions of consumers have been surveyed on repair and claims satisfaction by AutocheX. UpdatePromise is a leading provider of communication solutions to automotive insurers, repairers and dealerships throughout North America. Since its founding in 2009, it has been a consistent innovator in leveraging the latest digital services for consumer communication. "We're excited about working with an industry leader such as UpdatePromise to bring new and enhanced services to our AutocheX product line," said Jack Rozint, Senior communities will not be refunded as promised. offer the 2.0L MPI Atkinson Cycle engine that also has a focus on fuel economy. This engine generates 147 horsepower @ 6,200 RPM and 132 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4,500 RPM. These models are projected by Hyundai to achieve a best-in-class combined fuel economy rating, an improvement over previous models, due in part to an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) (based on comparison of specifications on manufacturer’s websites at the time of press release issuance). Intelligent Variable Transmission Mated to a 2.0L Engine Hyundai’s IVT provides superior efficiency and simulates gear shifts like those in the automatic transmissions that customers are used to. This transmission performs continuous shifts by the modulating pressure of the transmission’s pulley, depending on driving conditions and driver inputs. It uses a wide-ratio pulley system, which provides a broader ratio of operation compared with its competitors. This allows for improved fuel economy at higher gear ratios and improved performance at lower ratios.

As opposed to a more common push belt, the IVT takes advantage of a chain-design belt that improves fuel efficiency by an additional 1.2 percent compared with conventional belt systems. Hyundai’s new Shift Control Strategy used by the IVT improves linearity between driver inputs, vehicle behavior and acceleration. Shift response closely replicates automatic transmission step shifts. Elantra’s sleek design, combined with Hyundai’s expertise in interior packaging, has produced an interior that delivers outstanding comfort, functionality and practicality. A sleek roofline typically compromises headroom, but at 40.6 inches of front headroom and 37.3 inches of rear headroom, the 2021 Elantra has more front headroom and the same amount of rear headroom as its predecessor. The longer wheelbase also provides a best-in-class 38.0 inches of rear legroom and the wider track width means

direct and multi-port injection. Thanks to its fully electronic coolant control system, the four-cylinder engine also offers highly efficient thermal management with a short warm-up phase; this reduces friction and decreases fuel consumption. A standard feature on the 2020 Passat is Volkswagen’s Automatic PostCollision Braking System. This builds on the premise that a collision is rarely a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of events that follow the initial impact—the most significant of which can cause additional collisions. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System helps address this, in certain crash scenarios, by applying the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus potentially reducing residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage. The Passat also includes Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and switches on the hazard lights if the car is involved in certain types of collisions. To meet the demands of American

drivers, the 2020 Passat offers a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology. Available features include: Forward Collision Warning an Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist); Blind Spot Monitor; Rear Traffic Alert; Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist); Park Distance Control; Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist); and High Beam Control (Light Assist). Front Assist, standard on all models, is intended to warn drivers of potential frontal collisions (Forward Collision Warning) with vehicles and pedestrians, and in some cases provide automatic braking assistance (Autonomous Emergency Braking). Within physical system limits, Forward Collision Warning warns the driver of potential critical front-end collision situations, both acoustically and visually by a warning symbol in the instrument cluster if the car is traveling above 18 mph. Furthermore, an automatic jolt of the brakes can warn the driver of the danger. If the driver fails to brake, or if the car

is traveling below 18 mph, Autonomous Emergency Braking is activated to help slow the vehicle. If the brake pedal is applied but the driver brakes too lightly, the brake pressure is increased by the system (Braking Support). Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist) is included on SEL models. This system can automatically steer the car into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces (the latter in reverse). While driving below 25 mph, pressing the Park Assist button in the center console will activate the system to scan the left and right sides of the vehicle for parking spots. By using the turn signal indicator, the driver can indicate which side of the road they would like to park. When the system detects a space, “Parking Space Found” will appear in the multifunction display. The driver only needs to activate the accelerator pedal and brake once a gear is selected, as Park Assist can automatically help steer the vehicle into the parking space. The driver can override or deactivate the steering assistance at any time by turning the steering wheel, or pressing the button.n

Toyota From Page 11 the OEM, Mendoza said. A dealer-owned collision center will hold that business accountable and keep customers coming back. “I’m OK that we’re different,” Irving said. Irving said Toyota wouldn’t grant certified collision center status to an intake center — a storefront which received customers’ cars but sent them to an offsite collision center for an actual work — owned 15 percent by a dealership. “We don’t care who owns the building,” he said. The Toyota dealership must own 15 percent of the business operations, he said. Irving in April described Toyota’s target as its dealers who own less than 51 percent of a body shop, rather than a body shop selling off 15 percent of their company to a dealership. But connecting good collision repairers with dealers in growth markets would be a “bonus for us.” As to what kind of national coverage the OEM sought, Irving said Wednesday “there is no target.” Toyota would make sure everyone eligible had an opportunity to certify a shop, he said. But Mendoza said dealers have collision exclusivity within the same marketing areas granted for their retail operations. Toyota also will use a new certification signage initiative to head off customers mistaking a Toyota dealer’s uncertified collision center as part of the OEM’s certified network. They can’t “leverage that equity,” Mendoza said in a statement. If a dealership’s auto body shop isn’t Toyotacertified, it can’t purchase or lease the new signs, he said. “That’s a new point too,” Irving said. The dealership could still use its own brand name on the body shop, he said. “It will take time to flush the system,” Irving said. The branding distinction between certified and uncertified Toyota dealer body shops will arise as the new interior and exterior network signage spreads across the country. “We’re just rolling that out now,” Irving said. This new branding might benefit the certified shops by presenting what Mendoza described as cohesion with the broader Toyota brand. He likened it to

Target — when you see something branded by the company, “it looks Target.” Toyota is ensuring its brand “bleeds” into its collision network so “it inherently has that brand reputation” at first sight, according to Mendoza. Irving noted that Toyota had offered a certified collision program for 24 years, calling such longevity rare among the OEM’s initiatives. “Dealers obviously see value in what we’re offering to them,” he said. “… We’re just trying to keep up with the times.” We asked if many Toyota dealerships would be left with uncertified collision centers after the change. “I certainly hope not,” Irving said. “It certainly opens up the opportunity,” Mendoza said. “… It’s much easier to get in to the business.” A dealer could buy a piece of the collision center already receiving the retailer’s referrals, he said. Mendoza said Toyota support would offer another incentive for a dealership to open a certified center. When an entrepreneur qualifies to open a dealership, Toyota provides the support to run a service center successfully, he said. “We don’t want you to fail,” he said. If the dealer comes back in a year and says they’d like to open a collision center, the “only opportunity” to obtain that Toyota support similar to the service center would be through the certified collision center program, according to Mendoza. Toyota offers its certified shops business intelligence like reporting and consultation services, according to

Southern Automotive Journal

November 2020

Mendoza, who said Toyota also viewed the annual audit of certified shops more like a consultation. He described an industry professional sitting down with the certified shop’s staff and offering guidance so that the manager says, “‘This is the best program ever.'” Irving said Toyota will help certified shops analyze their business and find opportunities, and it wants the program to drive business to a shop to have a “very profitable collision center.” Collision repairers who join the program will have a huge marketing advantage. By 2023, Toyota would have more than 7 million connected vehicles on the road — allowing the OEM to know whenever a crash occurs. “First notice of loss will come from the car,” Irving said in April. “… The car will help direct the actual collision process.” He noted Wednesday that connectivity also permits an interesting partnership with Avis allowing a rented Toyota to carry the user’s normal radio stations and operate the vehicle without picking up new keys from the vendor. Toyota had “a lot of cool things coming down the road,” he said. Irving said Wednesday that Toyota’s own insurance — now available in about 40 states — would also promote certified shops. Between connected cars and Toyota’s insurance, there would be a “great advantage to be a certified shop,” he said. ”Reprinted Contented: Copyright © 2020. DRIVEN COMMUNICATIONS INC.
