Maybach 6 From Cover Exterior: powerful structural elements with sharp feature line Measuring almost six metres in length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet incorporates the classic proportions of art deco design with its extremely long bonnet and puristic, flowing lines, and at the same time completely reinterprets these aesthetic principles. The curved basic body boasts a sporty, stretched design which is characterised by powerful structural elements in conjunction with the sharp feature line. This side feature line defines the upper vehicle body, from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle through to the rear.

The strong contrast between the dark blue paintwork in "nautical blue metallic" and the chrome highlights increases the fascinating relationship between the clearly defined areas with organically shaped wings and the chrome trim elements, which sit at the top on the edge of the wing as well as in the middle on the boot lid, where they also incorporate the vertical brake lights. This benefits the interpretation of the MercedesMaybach radiator grille, which with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end.

The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit.

The radiator grille rests on two aerodynamically shaped supports on the outer right and left of the bumper.

The newly designed 24-inch lightalloy wheels feature a centre lock. This is painted in rose gold and as such reflects the colour shade used on all electric vehicle studies from Mercedes-Benz.

The extended, round "boat tail" format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet's rear recalls a luxury yacht, and narrow tail lights which emphasise the width of the vehicle are integrated in its outer edges. Further distinctive features at the rear include the diffuser with aluminium frame and the air outlets behind the wheel arches.

The transition between the vehicle rear, the area of the boot lid and the interior boasts a flowing design. Crystal white high-quality nappa leather creates an exciting contrast to the dark paint finish.

The custom-made fabric top with interwoven rose gold threads has been perfectly coordinated with the look of the vehicle.

The generous, flowing design idiom brings exterior and interior together in a holistic design. The formal flow of the areas from the rear into the interior gives rise to a typical yacht feeling. A light wing flows in a curve across the door trim and the centre tunnel into the seat landscape, creating a 360° open-air luxury lounge.

The new "inside out" spatial design adds a particularly special feature. The sitting surface forms a horizontal plane, transitions into the vertical plane of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing.

In addition to the flowing contours, the material composition produces a luxury experience of the highest order.

Here, too, the interplay of the contrasts is both hot and cool. The brand's hallmark authentic materials and colours are used, such as rose gold on the trim elements, or the surfaces which come into contact with the skin, featuring a lavish, quilted crystal white nappa leather finish. NAPA Completes Eighth Annual Get Back and Give Back Campaign to Support the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund NAPA AUTO PARTS completed its eighth annual “Get Back and Give Back” Campaign. Launched in 2012, NAPA’s “Get Back and Give Back” Campaign supports the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF), a not-for-profit organization and national leader in supporting the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. In 2019, NAPA’s military month promotions raised over $1.5 million for the cause. Since 2012, NAPA AUTO PARTS has raised, and donated, over $13 million in funds to build regional Intrepid Spirit Centers that can diagnose and treat Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) in active duty service members.

NAPA AUTO PARTS stores and NAPA AutoCare Centers partnered in multiple promotional programs in 2019 to raise money for the IFHF. This included campaigns selling “We Believe in Heroes” t-shirts and a Hero Hat program in stores, where proceeds from NAPA’s generous customers were contributed to the campaign. Above the 360° luxury lounge, the display strip links doors, dashboard and the rear area. All display elements are integrated into the continuous glass trim part. By way of contrast, classic round dials, such as the instrument cluster, are positioned prominently. The combination of digital displays with real needles is also totally on trend. By using "hyperanalogue" elements, the designers are responding to the need of people to experience analogue luxury in what is an increasingly digital world. As a classic borrowing from aviation, three air vents are positioned beneath the wing which appear to float like engines.

Another highlight comes courtesy of the floating, transparent centre tunnel,

which visualises the drive system's electrical energy flow for the passengers by means of blue fibre optics.

The main driving functions as well as information relevant to the location (e.g. restaurant recommendations or information on points of interest) are shown on the windscreen via two head-up displays.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is designed to anticipate the needs of its passengers and to provide the required information and solutions in real time. The user experience also combines ultimate luxury with intelligence. In addition to the touch-only control and intelligent navigation linked to the appointment calendar, another example is the Concierge function, it is possible to talk to the concierge like talking to a friend, i.e. freely, without using predefined voice commands. This enables full concentration of the tasks of driving.

The battery-powered Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is purpose-built and projected to deliver over 1,400 horsepower and over 1,100 ft.-lbs. of instant torque to demonstrate the capabilities of an electric powertrain in one of the most demanding race environments.

“Ford has always used motorsport to demonstrate innovation,” said Dave Pericak, Global Director, Ford Icons.

“Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the allelectric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit. CAPA Announces New Standard for Automotive Sensors

By John Huetter The Certified Automotive Parts Association on announced it had created a Standard 703 for ultrasonic parking sensors.

The protocol “may be expanded to include other types of sensors in the future,” CAPA wrote in a news release.

It said the sensor standard includes compliance with “applicable sections” of ISO 17386 and ISO 22840 and carries rules for “function, performance, durability, ingress protection, electrical, mechanical, climate, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), fit, dimensionality, appearance, and materials.”

According to the International Standards Organization, ISO 17386, “Transport information and control systems — Manoeuvring Aids for Low Speed Operation (MALSO) — Performance requirements and test procedures” is intended for short-

range detection. It demands “minimum functionality requirements which the driver can generally expect of the device, i.e., detection of and information on the presence of relevant obstacles within a defined (short) detection range. It defines minimum requirements for failure indication as well as performance test procedures; it includes rules for the general information strategy but does not restrict the kind of information or display system,” according to an ISO abstract.

ISO 22840, “Intelligent transport systems — Devices to aid reverse manoeuvres — Extended-range backing aid systems (ERBA)” deals with systems looking at longer-distances. ISO says such technology is “not intended for short-range detection of obstacles located immediately behind the vehicle”; for the latter, you’d use ISO 17386, according to ISO. An ISO abstract says the 22840

standard “establishes minimum functionality requirements that the driver can expect of the system, such as the detection of and information on the presence of relevant obstacles within a defined detection range.

ISO 22840:2010 also sets minimum requirements for failure indication as well as performance test procedures.

ISO 22840:2010 includes rules for the general information strategy but does not restrict the kind of information or display system.”

Intertek transportation technologies industry relations manager Stacy Bartnik, whose company manages CAPA, explained that “manufacturers must use a CAPA-approved/ISO accredited laboratory to perform the testing required in the standard.”

The organization has not yet responded to a Thursday afternoon request for more details about the standard, including if it contains any crash or calibration testing involving the recipient vehicles.

We asked about crash and calibration testing to ensure the vehicles’ systems recognize the aftermarket devices. “As a part of the certification requirements, sensors will be tested for integration with the vehicle systems and OE procedures for calibration are followed,” Bartnik wrote in an email Tuesday.

CAPA said it created the standard after “feedback from the collision repair industry.”

“CAPA’s goal is to provide the auto repair industry with a reliable, trusted means for identifying replacement parts comparable to parts from the original equipment manufacturer,” CAPA Chairman Clark Plucinski (Collision Repair Education Foundation) said in a statement. “As parking sensors become more prevalent in automobiles, the collision repair industry, insurers and consumers require peace of mind in having access to quality, safe, and affordable replacement sensors. ABPA Voices Concern to Introduction of Multiple State Bills Addressing OE Repair Procedures The ABPA is concerned with the accelerated introduction of OE Repair Procedure bills in multiple states that are tying in the exclusive use of OE Parts. Though noble intentions were behind their origination, we are seeing an increase in the addition of anti-aftermarket language that is not only detrimental to an important segment in the collision repair chain, they will also affect the American consumer.

“The current wave of OE Repair Procedure legislation many times contains imbedded language that in effect limits repair competition” ABPA Chairman Christopher Northup adds, “Consumer rights around safe, quality and economic repairs are threatened with these proposed bills. The result would be a detrimental effect on the cost of repair, the total loss valuation outcome and in time insurance premiums. All of which hurt consumers as well as threaten the vehicle repair supply chain.”

Automobile manufacturers are becoming more assertive in their efforts to eliminate the aftermarket collision repair industry through their use of repair procedures and position statements. These self-serving methods claim that only OE parts can be part of the official repair procedure.

In 2019, there have been 13 states that have introduced OE Repair Procedure requirement bills. These include the states of CT, HI, IL, IA, KY, LA, MN, MS, MT, NV, NH, TX, & WV. This is in addition to similar bills in 9 states in 2018 and 6 states in 2017.

Comparable legislation will be introduced in 2020 in other states.

By John Huetter Car rental giant Hertz Global Holdings announced it and multiple subsidiaries had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but the company would remain open and be able to pay new vendors.

“Hertz has over a century of industry leadership and we entered 2020 with strong revenue and earnings momentum,” Hertz CEO Paul Stone said in a statement Friday. “With the severity of the COVID-19 impact on our business, and the uncertainty of when travel and the economy will rebound, we need to take further steps to weather a potentially prolonged recovery. Today’s action will protect the value of our business, allow us to continue our operations and serve our customers, and provide the time to put in place a new, stronger financial foundation to move successfully through this pandemic and to better position us for the future. Our loyal customers have made us one of the world’s most iconic brands, and we look forward to serving

p.m. Friday. According to Hertz, U.S. Bankruptcy Code holds that the company can’t pay vendors for goods or services provided before this moment without the Bankruptcy Court’s approval. However, it said it is allowed to pay any bills incurred after this point; i.e., you could fix a ding in a Hertz car tomorrow and submit an invoice as always.

“All post-petition claims will be paid under normal terms,” Hertz wrote in a supplier FAQ. “Hertz can, will, and is required to pay in the ordinary course of business for all goods delivered and services rendered after the filing. As of the filing date, the Company had cash on hand sufficient to support its current operations. Depending upon the length of the COVID-19 induced crisis and its impact on revenue, the Company may seek access to additional cash, including through new borrowings, as the reorganization progresses. …

Hertz said its claims agent would be in touch about requesting money owed before the Friday cutoff. Procurement Senior Vice President Kennedy Oates wrote in a message to suppliers: Vendors seeking payment of these “pre-petition” claims will need to do so through the reorganization process. According to the Hertz bankruptcy

petition, the company’s 50 largest unsecured creditors include some familiar collision and auto service/repair industry names.

Hertz owed nearly $3.27 million to Safelite Fulfillment; more than $2.71 million to Pep Boys; more than $2.53 million to Gerber National Claim Services, a sister company to Gerber Collision; more than $1.97 million to Bridgestone/ Firestone; more than $1.94 million to Maaco, more than $1.27 million to Dent Wizard International; and $1.27 million to AutoNation Shared Service Center.

A May 11 quarterly filing said the company had $2.5 billion in vehicle debt maturing between April 1 and March 31, 2021. Hertz posted a $356 million net loss last quarter.

Hertz in the 10-Q said “Substantially all of the Company’s revenue earning vehicles” are either owned by special purpose entities or are already spoken for as collateral supporting certain Hertz financial instruments.

“None of such assets … are available to satisfy the claims of general creditors,” Hertz wrote.

Hertz told the bankruptcy court it decided to skip lease payments due April 27, triggering amortization and liquidation events. Lenders had agreed to give Hertz a break until Friday, but the rental car company ultimately was unable to obtain any more wiggle room beyond this.

“The Company actively engaged with many of its largest creditors to temporarily reduce the required payments under the Company’s vehicle operating lease,” Hertz wrote in its news release.

“Although Hertz negotiated short-term relief with such creditors, it was unable to secure longer-term agreements.

BMW Inline 6-Cylinder 840i and 840i Xdrive Convertible The addition of the BMW inline 6-cylinder 840i and 840i xDrive Coupes and Convertibles to the 2020 8 Series model year lineup. These models join the 840i and 840i xDrive Gran Coupes and the 8-cylinder M850i xDrive Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe models.

The exterior design of the BMW 8 Series Coupe and Convertible exudes a very sporting form with an air of exclusiveness and sensual allure. Their unique aura is the result of a new styling language focusing on emotional engagement.

An almost fully covered underbody, active air flap control with adjustable kidney grille slats and Air Curtains including Air Breathers help to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the BMW 8 Series.

The greenhouse is sharply tapered at the rear, accentuating the muscular shoulder line. The elongated quarter windows terminate in a very tightly-angled version of the iconic Hofmeister kink “counter-swing”. Classic insulated fabric soft top and rollover protection system. The fully-electric soft-top design incorporates multiple layers of fabric materials to not only insulate the occupants of the BMW 840i and 840i xDrive Convertibles from outside noise and elements but also helps reduce weight from the very top of the vehicle, thus lowering the center of gravity and improving handling and performance. CAPA Approves First Headlamp Tab Repair Kits for Its Verification Program The Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA), an independent nonprofit standard-setting and certification organization for automotive crash parts, has approved the first headlamp tab repair kits for its verification program. The kits, produced by Creative Repair Solutions (CRS) and distributed by Original One Parts through their Aftermarket Plus product line, were verified following a testing process which included material testing, vibration testing, and vehicle test fit.

CAPA announced its new program

for verification of headlamp tab repair kits in September 2019. CAPA Verification differs from its Certification Program in that there is not a car company service part available for comparison to the aftermarket part. In addition, parts that have been CAPA Verified have been proven to meet Verification Program requirements.

The headlamp tab repair kits offer a sustainable solution to the industry by reducing the amount of discarded parts. In addition, these kits help to minimize repair costs, potentially helping to prevent total

loss claims.

Parts achieving CAPA verification will bear this mark on the packaging and/ or the part itself: CRS has achieved verification on 14 part numbers which can be used on 11 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 6 GMC Sierra vehicle applications.

With the initial verifications complete, testing and verification of additional vehicle applications is expected to increase, with more headlamp tab repair kits being introduced to the market.n

The exhaust manifold embedded in the cylinder head cooling jacket, the new oil module with integral heat exchanger and the split-cooling valve delivering on-demand control of the cooling system all serve to optimize the engine’s temperature management. Efficiency is given a further boost by the low-friction belt drive and the reduced weight of both the crankshaft and oil pump.

Engine power is transfered to the driveline through the latest improved version of the Steptronic Sport automatic transmission featuring a weight-reducing design, a newly

developed controller and a wider gear ratio spread. The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission now shifts gears more sharply courtesy of an optimized hydraulics control unit. A new generation of torsion dampers that reduce rotational forces within the powertrain help improve both driving comfort and shift smoothness. Integral twin-damper systems for isolating vibrations reduce the degree of slip at the torque converter lock-up clutch.

Shift paddles on the steering wheel are included as standard for manual gear selection, while a Launch Control function allows for accelerating from a standing start with maximum available traction.

Sport transmission’s controller can adapt its shift parameters to the current driving situation through intelligent networking with the standard Navigation system, enabling it to take the planned route into account. Navigation data is used to downshift early, for example, when approaching an intersection in order to use engine braking to slow the car down. Auto Techcelerators Joins CIECA as Corporate Member Auto Techcelerators, LLC joined CIECA as a Corporate member. Launched in September of 2019, the company was founded by Frank Terlep, presently the CEO. With 10 employees, Auto Techcelerators is focused on designing and developing mobile apps and cloud applications, such as Test Drive CoPilot™, for the auto, collision, glass and truck industries.

“We joined CIECA to ensure we develop solutions that meet / exceed industry standards,” said Terlep. “We are most excited about the integration possibilities as well as helping create new standards for processes like calibrations.”

Toyota/Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association to Sponsor National ‘COVID-19 Day of Service’ The Toyota/Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association ( TLMODA) is working with The Salvation Army to fill the pantries of families in need during the coronavirus pandemic. On May 22, 2020, TLMODA Dealers and The Salvation Army will distribute more than 4,800 packages in 24 communities throughout the country.

“The coronavirus pandemic has left many families vulnerable and in a state of economic instability,” says TLMODA Board President Ed Fitzpatrick.

“The COVID-19 Day of Service represents the TLMODA member’s collective compassion and responsibility to give back to the community.”

During TLMODA’s National

COVID-19 Day of Service, Toyota and Lexus dealership staff will distribute grocery boxes of non-perishable items like boxes of cereal and canned goods to help feed a family of four, for a week. Items for the grocery boxes will be packed and assembled by local Salvation Army teams in accordance with safety guidelines from local, state and federal health officials.

The Salvation Army is helping identify families in need of food and instructing them to visit one of the participating Toyota or Lexus dealerships to pick up their grocery box. In order to maintain proper social distance protocols, boxes will be placed in the trunk of each family’s vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis until sup-

plies are exhausted. All families must contact their local Salvation Army to qualify for a grocery box.

“Across the country, the economic impact of this pandemic continues to impact families, both those who were already experiencing the challenges of poverty, and some who are experiencing them for the first time,” said David Hudson, National Commander of The Salvation Army.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of organizations like TLMODA so we can continue to meet the evolving needs of the most vulnerable.”

For the first time, the EQ Boost startergenerator is also responsible for idle speed control. This allows fuel savings that were previously reserved for highvoltage hybrid technology.

Furthermore, this modern 48-volt electrical system allows for the use of new technologies. It reliably supplies the onboard electrical consumers (e.g. air conditioning and heating elements plus infotainment and assistance systems) with energy while ensuring full driving power.

Other distinctive features of the AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine include two turbochargers positioned inside the cylinder "V" configuration. The main advantages of this design are the compact engine construction, optimal response and low exhaust emissions.

In the GLS 63 this engine develops an output of 603 hp. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 4.1 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph.

Upshifts or downshifts are implemented instantly. Especially in the "Sport+" drive program and in manual mode, the transmission is very responsive. Another strength of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G are the fast multiple downshifts. For example, on kick-down, the transmission can shift directly from 9th to 5th gear or from 5th to 3rd gear.

Equipped for critical limits: the air suspension with continuous damping adjustment The standard AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with special spring/ damper set-up and adaptive adjustable damping ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System) combines outstanding driving dynamics with high ride comfort. It supports a driving experience that is characterized by a high level of agility, neutral

cornering behavior and optimized traction. The damping characteristics can be preselected in three stages - "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport+", allowing a clear distinction between high long-distance comfort and sporty vehicle dynamics.

Thanks to pneumatic self-levelling, the GLS 63 maintains a constant vehicle level regardless of the vehicle load. The ride height is generally lowered by 0.4 inches when selecting the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs "Sport" and "Sport+". In the "Comfort" drive program, the vehicle is not lowered by 0.4 inches until the speed exceeds 75 mph, and is raised back to normal level when the speed falls below 44 mph.

This reduces aerodynamic drag and therefore fuel consumption. In addition, handling stability is improved thanks to a lower center of gravity. To increase ground clearance on poor surfaces or for ramps, the ride height can be raised by up to 2.2 inches at the touch of a button when the engine is running – both when stationary and when driving at a speed of up to 44 mph.

AMG speed-sensitive sport power steering and AMG high-performance braking system The electromechanical speedsensitive power steering features a variable ratio. It delivers direct steering action and precise feedback. The steering power assistance level is assigned to the various stages of the AMG DYNAMICS system. The configuration in "Basic" and "Advanced" is comfortoriented. "Pro" has a configuration that supports a sporty driving style and provides more surface feedback.

Great power, large brakes: the correspondingly large high-performance braking system reliably slows down this performance SUV even with heavier loads, and with short braking distances.

15.7 x 1.5 inch internally ventilated and perforated brake disks are used at the front axle, with 6-piston fixed calipers painted in grey with white AMG lettering. At the rear, the internally ventilated integral brake disks measure 14.6 x 1.3 inches and have a 1-piston floating caliper.n

GM’s Spring Hill Manufacturing to Run on the Sun General Motors’ Spring Hill Manufacturing plant is expected to be powered by 100 percent solar energy beginning in late 2022.

This green tariff agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority is expected to supply up to 100 megawatts of solar energy per year, or the amount of electricity consumed by 18,000 United States households annually.* The energy will be supplied by a solar farm in Lowndes County, Mississippi, currently under development

by Origis Energy.** The commitment is made possible through the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Green Invest program, which is the federal electric utility’s green tariff solution.

This project is expected to increase GM’s use of renewable energy to more than 50 percent of its sourced electricity by 2023, moving GM closer to its goal of sourcing 100 percent of electricity from renewables in the U.S. by 2030 at GM-owned sites.

“Our commitment to renewable energy is part of our vision of a world with zero emissions,” said Dane Parker, GM chief sustainability officer. “We’re committed to using our scale and relationships to increase renewable energy demand and availability.”

Green tariff solutions are a key component of GM’s renewable energy strategy and allow the company to work

with utilities to provide renewable energy solutions near its facilities.

Spring Hill Manufacturing is the largest GM facility in North America, totaling 2,100 acres. Seven hundred of those acres are dedicated to farming, with an additional 100 acres dedicated to wildlife habitat, composing of wetlands and native grasses. The wildlife area has received Gold recognition and certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council. The plant builds the GMC Acadia and the Cadillac XT5 and XT6, as well as several engines.

Auto Glass Business Owners Grapple with Employees Who Don’t Want to Come Back A recent report in FORBES magazine discussed a situation that a number of business owners have found themselves in, and auto glass company owners are no exception.

The Federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provides an additional $600 per week in unemployment benefits to workers who have been let go or furloughed as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Add to that state unemployment that can range from a high of $790 per week in Washington State to a low of $235 per week in Mississippi and many workers will receive $1,000 per week to stay home.

As auto glass companies work to reopen, they are hearing from workers who want to stay home instead.

This is especially problematic for companies that received funds through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which requires 75% of the funds be used on salaries and used in 8 weeks in order for the loan to be forgiven.

“We got the PPP money on a Thursday. On Friday, I called everyone and told them to come back on Monday as we were opening back up. Everyone told me they’d see me Monday,” said one shop owner in Pennsylvania who also did not want to be publicly identified. “Monday morning came and one

employee just quit outright, two others told me, that if they took childcare into account, they could make more money staying home for a while so that was what they were going to do. So that Monday turned awful pretty quickly.”

Some states are beginning to address the issue. Ohio, for example, is asking employers to let them know when workers won’t return to work and other states are expected to follow suit. In the meantime, it remains a problem for some employers, which isn’t expected to abate until after the extra funding ends. Aftermarket Associations Oppose ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Groups send opposition letter to Congressional leaders.

Major automotive aftermarket associations, including the Auto Care Association, Tire Industry Association and Service Station Dealers of American and Allied Trades, the Automotive Oil Change Association, and the Automotive Service Association, sent a letter to Congressional leaders in opposition of a new “Cash for Clunkers” type program from being included in the next COVID-19 stimulus legislation.

The members of these organizations represent automotive service and repair professionals, tire dealers, distributors and manufacturers that depend primarily on post-warranty vehicles for revenue. In 2009, during the Obama Administration, the Consumer Assistance Recycles and Save (CARS) program was implemented as a response to the 2008 recession. The goals of the program were to reinvigorate the automotive industry, improve fuel efficiency and cut carbon dioxide emissions. However, evidence suggests the program functioned as a boon to automakers alone.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) and Brookings Institution also raised questions about whether the program was successful in stimulating the economy.

“Rather than focus on removing older, post-warranty vehicles from the roads indiscriminately through another Cars for Clunkers program, Congress should look at enhancing Motor Vehicle Inspection programs in all 50 states,” said Roy Littlefield, Tire Industry Association CEO. “This would remove unsafe vehicles from the nation’s roadways, while maintaining safe older vehicles as a customer base for independent repair shops.”n
