The Ram 1500 Revolution

BEV Concept is part of Ram’s significant contribution to Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan to lead the way the world moves by delivering innovative, clean, safe and affordable mobility solutions.

“The Ram Revolution represents several important things to the Ram brand,” Koval added. “Of course, it’s our new Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept that serves as a roadmap to our electrified future. Yet Ram Revolution is also our philosophy as we redefine the pickup segment, with a steady drumbeat of announcements and initiatives as we embark on our electrified journey.”

The Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept provides a stunning vision of the ultimate pickup truck as part of the future of Ram trucks. Ram’s exterior design team set out to revolutionize the pickup truck segment by creating an ultramodern concept that exudes heroic strength, maintains its purpose and is environmentally responsible.

The Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept features an exterior design that is strikingly “brutiful” – brutal yet beautiful. An animated and modernized “R-A-M” badge adorns the all-new face of Ram, which features a fully animated LED “tuning fork” design. The doors have been reimagined in a grand saloon-style opening that showcases a cavernous occupant space without a B-pillar. Bright LED lights have been cleverly integrated into the front bumper flares and advancements in lighting are highlighted by fully animated LED taillamps and badging. Building on

Ram’s reputation as North America’s off-road and performance truck leader, the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept features an integrated fascia design with a skid plate and new pivoting tow hooks that can sit flush.

Innovative features are thoughtfully integrated throughout and include a new powered frunk with one-touch open-and-close functionality that adds capability and storage. Other powered features, including a powered charge-port door situated on the driver’s side front quarter panel, a powered tailgate, flushmounted door handles, powered side steps and a powered rear step with active diffuser, round out the extensive list of powered features.

The concept features revolutionary side-view mirrors that are smaller, more lightweight and use 3D printed materials for optimal aerodynamics and reduced drag. The side-view mirrors use a digital camera to capture the truck’s surroundings, allowing for a smaller physical size.

with added capability include a power multifunction tailgate and a larger RamBox. The acute hourglass body design and fender wells clear 35-inch tires with a new unique design. The 1500 Revolution BEV Concept features self-leveling capability and rides on 24-inch wheels with center caps that light up and stay in place.

These new proportions are achieved courtesy of the innovative STLA Frame EV platform on which the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept is built. New intelligent safety systems and smaller, more powerful electric motors afforded the design team the ability to shift the cabin forward and increase cabin length. The 1500 Revolution BEV Concept features a cabin that is four inches longer than today’s production truck for increased room and comfort while the bed length remains the same.

Known as a “one space environment,” the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept uses one continuous space front to back that enables several different interior configurations. The “one space environment” theme is bolstered by a new interior layout that offers even more flexibility with room to configure a workspace or for your next adventure.

A significantly more spacious interior and greater cabin length are the result of a new architecture while the battery’s size allows for more cargo volume. Ram Track, Ram’s rail attachment/floor track system, provides cabin flexibility for the seats and console, as well as usable tie-downs or other storage potential. Ram Track is also incorporated in the frunk, as well as the bed, allowing for true flexibility from front to back.

Nearly 50 years ago, the club

cab was introduced with secondrow seating. Half a century later, Ram continues to build on these industryshaping features with the 1500 BEV Concept ushering in a new feature: third-row jump seats. The powered mid-gate features mounted jump seats with a removable lower section for placement in the bed or outside the vehicle. The mid-gate with powered glass enables a passthrough (and into the frunk) that can fit objects up to 18-ft. long with the tailgate closed.

Seating and console flexibility was a focus with the center console’s ability to be removed for even more space. If desired, the center console armrest individually converts to a workstation surface. Combined with mid-gate and jump-seat options, the

“We are pleased to announce that our first U.S.-assembled model has begun to arrive at retailers in 15 states,” said Claudia Marquez, chief operating officer of Genesis Motor North America. “The launch of the Electrified GV70 is a significant moment for the brand as we continue to grow our EV lineup for American customers.”

Starting at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP[i]) of $65,850, the Electrified GV70

Advanced AWD includes an entire suite of available safety and advanced driver assistance systems and is comprehensively equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and navigation system with a 14.5-inch HD screen, 20-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, leather seatings, heated and ventilated seats, vehicle-to-load charging and more. The Electrified GV70 is available at select Genesis retailers in 15 states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Design

The signature design elements

of the award-winning GV70 continue to take shape the 2023 Electrified GV70’s exterior. The Crest Grille has evolved into an aerodynamic crest that features an inverted G-Matrix pattern and incorporates a hidden EV charging port, creating a minimalist yet sophisticated look. The minimalist horizontal shape of the rear bumper completes the Electrified GV70’s evolved profile. A simplified, tailpipefree skid plate emphasizes the SUV’s electric nature, while the iconic and progressive Two-Line headlamps put the finishing touch on the Electrified GV70 with Genesis’ signature Two Lines architecture.

Completing the elegant and eye-catching look, the proprietary Genesis paint exudes richness and depth that sets it apart from all other cars on the road. The Electrified GV70 is available at launch in Vik Black, Savile Silver, Makalu Gray, and Makalu Gray Matte.

The interior boasts a driverfocused design, offering an intuitive and dynamic driving experience. A variety of materials, including woven

wool, tricot, and suede fabrics have been used to furnish the model. The Electrified GV70 is available with a Glacier White or Obsidian Black interior, with perforated leather seating. The Prestige package adds a twotone Glacier White option with copper piping and a refined quilting pattern in the Nappa leather seating.

Performance

Elegant and athletic, the Electrified GV70 offers powerful performance paired with standard allwheel drive (AWD) to satisfy every type of driver. The powerful dual electric motors produce up to 320 kW, equivalent to 429 HP, while the addition of 350kW rapid charging enables the 77.4 kWh battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 18 minutes, or more than 60 miles in five minutes under optimal conditions.

Additionally, the 400V/800V multirapid charging system allows owners to utilize various forms of charging infrastructure. The multi-rapid charging system enables fast and stable charging by raising the voltage supplied by typical chargers from 400V to 800V, and owners can use both 400V and 800V charging infrastructure without the need for an additional converter.

The Electrified GV70 offers standard Boost Mode, allowing the driver to experience exhilarating performance with 483 HP of output for 10 seconds, making the driving experience more dynamic.

The Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) automatically connects or disconnects the motor and drive shaft depending on driving conditions. This enables seamless switch-

ing between 2WD and AWD, ultimately helping reduce unnecessary power loss and increasing driving efficiency. Estimated range for a fully charged Electrified GV70 is up to 236 miles AER.

The Electrified GV70 driving experience is further enhanced with Smart Regenerative Braking System 2.0, which regenerates energy through the braking system based on driving habits, real-time navigation, and road conditions. In driving mode, the Intelligent Pedal (i-Pedal) allows the driver to accelerate, decelerate, and slowly to a stop using just the accelerator pedal.

For added driving comfort, the Electrified GV70 also comes equipped with Active Noise Control-Road (ANCGV70 Please Turn to Page 20

I-CAR Achieves National Recognition as a Top Workplace

I-CAR® (the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) announced it has earned a 2023 Top Workplaces USA award (small employer category), which recognizes and celebrates organizations across the country that have built exceptional, people-centric workplace cultures. The award is issued annually by Energage, with a 15-year history of surveying more than 20 million employees and recognizing the top organizations across 60 markets for regional Top Workplaces awards.

“We are grateful to receive this prestigious award and to be part of such an elite group of organizations,” said John Van Alstyne, I-CAR CEO & President. “I-CAR takes pride in its strong and passionately engaged team focused on increasingly serving the industry with excellence every day. This recognition confirms efforts we have put in place to build a col-

laborative team and culture, and the positive impact on how we advance our important mission to ultimately ensure the safety of over 30 million drivers on the road. Receiving this award is very special because it comes directly from authentic feedback shared by our team members about their experience working for I-CAR.”

I-CAR, recognized in the small employer category (150-499 employees), has 282 full-time associates, including instructors, primarily concentrated at its Training Support Center in Hoffman Estates, the Chicago Technical Center in Vernon Hills, IL, and the Technical Center in Appleton, WI, and also remote based geographically across the United States.

Top Workplaces USA recognizes organizations with 150 or more employees that have built great cultures. More than 42,000 organizations were invited to participate in the

Top Workplaces USA survey. Winners are chosen based solely on employee feedback gathered through an employee engagement survey, issued by Energage. Results are calculated by comparing the survey’s research-based statements, including 15 Culture Drivers that are proven to predict high performance against industry benchmarks.

In addition to receiving the Top Workplaces USA recognition, I-CAR also received two Culture Excellence awards for providing exceptional Work-Life Balance and having highly Supportive Managers.

“We're incredibly thankful for the special recognition of our collaborative culture and fantastic leadership team,” said Van Alstyne. “At I-CAR, our team members are our most highly valued asset and providing flexibility to support their personal well-being and professional develop-ment is of utmost importance.”

Massachusetts AG Tells Court State Will Start Enforcing New Right-to-Repair Law on June 1

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell notified the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts that her office will begin enforcing the Data Access Law on June 1, 2023.

Approved by voters through a ballot measure in 2020, the law requires automobile manufacturers with sales operations in the state to provide vehicle owners and independent repair shops real-time access to telematics information. The OEMs would deliver that data through a standardized, openaccess platform for all 2022 model year vehicles or newer. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation sued Massachusetts to block the law, arguing that it conflicts with federal law, poses cybersecurity and vehicle safety risks, and doesn’t provide its members enough time to adjust to comply.

The case went to trial and the court heard arguments from both sides in the summer of 2021. The court asked the state to enter a non-enforcement

stipulation until after the verdict is reached. Then-Attorney General and current Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey agreed to not enforce the rule until August 1, 2021. The Attorney General has since extended the nonenforcement stipulation several times at the court’s request.

In the March 7, 2023, filing, newly elected AG Campbell noted the following:

“In addressing the Court’s prior

requests for stipulations of non-enforcement, the Attorney General has sought to balance competing concerns. On the one hand, recognizing the demands of a busy trial court, the technical complexity of the trial evidence, and the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic during the litigation of this case, the Attorney General has deferred to the Court’s view that it needs more time and further evidence to produce an opinion that brings ‘this case to an appealable final judgement’…On the other hand, the Attorney General has a specific statutory duty to issue the notice provided for under Section 4 of the Data Access Law…After consideration of these competing concerns, the Attorney General has determined that the non-enforcement stipulation should come to an end.” n

The INFINITI QX50 is defined by its distinctive proportions, which set the car apart from its competitors. Influenced by INFINITI's "Powerful Elegance" design language – characterized by flowing sculptural lines and strong, muscular proportions.

The QX50's sophisticated rear aspect is characterized by clean, simple lines and curves that release the visual energy built up from character lines flowing along the vehicle's sides. INFINITI's signature crescent-cut D-pillar extends the visual length of the roofline, and the rear pillar arcs forward, emphasizing motion even when the car is stationary. The design of the LED taillights matches the shape of the

is aided by a choice of 19- or 20-inch wheels – which also adds to its sense of agility and SUV-like ruggedness. The wheels are pushed toward the corners, helping minimize the intrusion of the wheel arches into the passenger cabin on interior space. The rear overhang is

BlueOval City, Ford’s All-New Mega-Campus in West Tennessee, Is Taking Shape and Preparing to Build Ford’s Next-Gen Electric Truck in 2025

Ford, the No. 2 EV brand in the U.S. in 2022, is on track with construction at BlueOval City mega-campus and poised to usher in a new era of American innovation and manufacturing.

The electric vehicle and battery manufacturing campus in West Tennessee begins production in 2025, and will be home to Ford’s secondgeneration electric truck, code named Project T3, and will be capable of producing 500,000 EV trucks a year at full production.

“BlueOval City is the blueprint for Ford’s electric future around the world,” said Bill Ford, Ford’s executive chair. “We will build revolutionary electric vehicles at an advanced manufacturing site that works in harmony with the planet, aligning business growth and innovation with environmental progress.”

Ford and partner SK On are investing $5.6 billion in the campus and creating approximately 6,000 new jobs. Ford has launched a comprehensive education and training effort called BlueOval Learning to prepare future employees.

BlueOval City is designed to be Ford’s first carbon neutral vehicle manufacturing and battery campus as Ford works to power all Ford plants globally with renewable and carbon-free electricity by 2035.

“Project T3 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revolutionize America’s truck. We are melding 100 years of Ford truck know-how with world-class electric vehicle, software and aerodynamics talent. It will be a platform for endless innovation and capability,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO.

“PJ O’Rourke once described American pickups as ‘a back porch with an engine attached.’ Well, this new truck is going to be like the Millennium Falcon – with a back porch attached,” he said. “The manufacturing process

Building Tomorrow’s Workforce

To prepare individuals for new jobs at BlueOval City, Ford is introducing BlueOval Learning to empower future workers to build an EV future in America. This talent development program will strengthen skills, provide teacher support and increase work-based learning experiences. Key elements include:

• Building STEM curricula: Ford will support K-12 schools and universities to expand existing STEM-related curricula and infrastructure

• Bringing advanced manufacturing to local schools: Ford will provide mechatronics training equipment and program development in Haywood, Tipton and Lauderdale counties

• Kick-starting careers in high school: Ford will help to expand certifications and dual-enrollment opportunities for students

• Experiential learning: Ford will partner with colleges and universities to develop work-based learning such as co-ops and internships

• Premier training in advanced technologies: Ford will collaborate with higher education institutions to provide training on advanced manufacturing, EVs and battery manufacturing

• BlueOval City TCAT: This state-of-the-art training center, a $40 million investment by the State of Tennessee and created with the Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology, will be a hub for education resources and best-in-class training programs

will be equally breakthrough, with radical simplicity, cost efficiency and quality technology that will make BlueOval City the modern-day equivalent of Henry Ford’s Rouge factory. A factory of the future that people from all over the world will want to tour.”

BlueOval City also is a key part of Ford’s plan to scale EV production and make them more accessible to customers; the company is targeting a production run rate of 2 million EVs annually across the globe by late 2026. Project T3 and a New Industrial Era

With its F-150 Lightning, Ford already has shifted people’s expectations about the capability, driving

enjoyment and productivity EV pickups can deliver. Ford’s Project T3 aims to further grow and reinvent the Ford truck franchise.

Ford is developing its secondgeneration EV truck in tandem with the all-new assembly plant, resulting in efficiencies never before possible – such as a 30 percent smaller general assembly footprint than traditional plants while delivering higher production capacity.

Meanwhile, Project T3 team members are ensuring they deliver the capability and innovation customers

Lightweight seats feature integrated seatbelts, grab handles and speakers with the ability to fold flat along with extended recline, work, conference modes and deploying the jump seats. Vastly more interior volume benefits second-row and thirdrow jump seat passengers who enjoy limo-like space.

The “tuning fork” design is present inside the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept, stretching the length of the dashboard and continuing a theme line to the mid-gate. A full touchscreen display comprised of two screens offers up to 28 inches of screen space as the centerpiece of an interior loaded with advanced technology. The lower display has three different positions depending on the task at hand – minimal view, extended view and full screen view – and can be removed and used in different areas of the truck. The upper screen can also slide on the Ram rail attachment system.

The rearview mirror combines leading-edge technology to improve safety and convenience. Significantly smaller than traditional truck mirrors without compromising effectiveness, the rearview mirror is packed with a range of sophisticated technologies, including a smart backup camera with 360-degree views, speakers,

and receivers compatible with voice assistants, such as Alexa and Siri.

When in reverse, the camera stitches together images from various other cameras around the truck, providing the driver with a 360-degree view on the interior digital screens. This allows the driver to see their surroundings with greater clarity, helping to avoid accidents and improve safety, especially when backing up to a trailer. The mirror also includes a supplementary backup flood lamp that provides additional visibility when reversing the truck, which is especially useful in low light condi-

tions. In addition to the backup camera, the rearview mirror also communicates with biometric cameras that observe the truck's environment as it approaches objects and as it’s being approached.

SEMA-Supported Bill Introduced in U.S. House of Representatives to Prevent Internal Combustion Engine Bans

U.S. Representative John Joyce (R-PA) introduced H.R. 1435, the “Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act,” a bill designed to protect Americans’ right to choose the technology that powers their motor vehicles. The bill was introduced in response to the California Air Resources Board’s plans to ban the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. The Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act would restrict the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from issuing a waiver for regulations that would ban the sale or use of new motor vehicles with internal combustion engines. The bill is critically important to stopping CARB’s plans to ban ICE

vehicles, which requires the EPA to waive federal preemption provisions in the Clean Air Act in order for California’s zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) mandate to go into effect.

“SEMA believes that vehicle owners should not be directed toward a specific technology, but rather be allowed to choose the type of vehicle technology that best serves them,” said SEMA CEO Mike Spagnola. “While electric vehicle technology expands clean transportation options, SEMA will continue to advocate on behalf of the industry that has helped make the internal-combustion engine (ICE) a reliable, affordable and clean option for millions of consumers.”

It is critically important that the EPA does not permit CARB’s ZEV regulations to take effect, as it could lead to 17 other states that have followed all or part of California’s previous clean-car rules adopting similar proposals. California requires 35% of new cars, SUVs and small trucks sold to be zero-emissions starting in 2026, increasing to 68% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. In 2022, zeroemissions vehicles made up about 16% of new cars sold in California. The rule also sets durability, warranty and other provisions on zeroemissions vehicles. However, the rule does not impact the sale or use of used diesel- or gas-powered vehicles already on the road. n

28 State AGs Voice Support for Federal ‘Right to Repair’ Legislation

Twenty-eight state attorney generals have banded together to support “right to repair” federal legislation to ensure “small automobile businesses and “mom-and-pop” auto shops can remain competitive against a closed system favored by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).”

In a letter written to the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee and Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation the AGs request that the lawmakers redouble their efforts to pass the legislation.

“The Right-to-Repair is a bipartisan issue that impacts every consumer, household, and farm in a time of increasing inflation,” the letter states. “It is about ensuring that consumers have choices as to who, where, when, and at what cost their vehicles can be repaired.

“…Manufacturing of automobiles, digital devices, and agricultural equipment is increasingly becoming more technologically advanced and built with more embedded electronics. OEMs often control access to these electronics parts, creating unfair restraint of trade and a monopoly

• Fair Repair Act: Introduced in 2021, the act would require OEMs make diagnostic, maintenance, and repair equipment available to independent repair providers.

• SMART Act: Introduced during the current legislative session by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), this bill would reduce the amount of time car manufacturers can enforce patent designs on repair parts against non-OEM parts suppliers from 14 years to 2.5 years. The bill is largely the same as previous versions introduced in prior sessions of Congress.

• REPAIR Act: Supporters claim will ensure access to “all tools and equipment; wireless transmission of repair and diagnostic data; and access to on-board diagnostic and telematic systems needed to repair a vehicle.” Opponents of the right to repair movement, including the Automotive Alliance for Innovation (AAI), have argued that access to OEM repair procedures, tools, and equipment is accessible today in the collision repair space via OEM1Stop, OEM websites, and owner’s manuals.

on repair. This can harm consumers directly by driving up prices and is antithetical to a free market.”

The letter brings up and implies support for three pieces of legislation that have been previously introduced but not passed — the Saving Money on Auto Repair Transportation Act (SMART Act) and the Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair Act (REPAIR Act).

In December 2022, New York

became the first state to legislate the right for owners and independent repairers to have access to digital electronic product diagnostic, repair, and maintenance procedures under the Digital Fair Repair Act. R2R legislation is on the table in Maryland and Maine and is tied up in court in Massachusetts.

Ford From Page 18 expect from Ford trucks with a fraction of the complexity from previous truck programs.

The assembly plant will use carbon-free electricity from the day it opens. For the first time in 120 years, Ford also is using recovered energy from the site’s utility infrastructure and geothermal system to provide carbonfree heat for the assembly plant – saving about 300 million cubic feet of natural gas typically needed each year to heat similarly sized vehicle assembly plants.

The campus’ new utility system will save 50 million gallons of water each year by reducing evaporation from the site’s cooling towers. Plus, the zero-waste-to-landfill site is designed to use no fresh water for its assembly processes. Ford also intends to develop a holistic stormwater management system separate from the water table to help protect the local environment.

The 3,600-acre campus also has a fully integrated BlueOval SK battery manufacturing site. On-site, the team will build battery cells and arrays and assemble battery packs that will be delivered just across the site into the assembly plant, in less than 30 minutes.

In addition, BlueOval City is developing an on-site supplier park and will have an upfit center capable of adding in dozens of Ford trucks’ most popular features – including robotically installed spray-in bedliners and integrated tool boxes before the pickups are released to dealers and customers.

To help reduce traffic congestion and emissions, the campus also has an on-site Lowe’s store supplying building materials, two construction equipment rental companies and three concrete batch plants.

Expanding Community Support

Ford is working to ensure local touches are included in BlueOval City’s design – including crops and art.

Ford EV designers, marketers and land development leaders are collaborating with the University of Memphis Department of Art to create a student-led art installation to serve as a landmark for BlueOval City. The piece – which is the focus of a University sculpture art course – will be installed this summer.

Native Tennessee grasses will be planted on about 500 acres to support local wildlife and select local farmers also are invited to continue planting and harvesting crops on 380 acres of the site, saved for future expansion as EV adoption grows.

Plus, Ford Motor Company Fund is leading a capital grants program to strengthen local communities’ infrastructure in West Tennessee. Local nonprofits and municipalities in the area have been selected as grant recipients, receiving a total of nearly $1.2 million to help build capacity and infrastructure to better serve the community’s needs for generations to come. n

CAR Coalition Applauds Reintroduction of Bipartisan ‘Save Money on Auto Repair Transportation (SMART) Act’

The CAR (Consumer Access to Repair) Coalition, a growing group of independent automotive parts and repair companies, associations, and insurers committed to preserving consumer choice and affordable vehicle repair, applauds United States Reps. Darrell Issa (R-CA-48), Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA18), David Joyce (R-OH- 14), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18), Laurel Lee (R-FL-15), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA-3) for reintroducing the “Save Money on Auto Repair Transportation (SMART) Act”. As car repair prices continue to climb, the SMART Act will empower consumers to choose quality, safe, and affordable

aftermarket car parts, while respecting the intellectual property rights of automakers.

“Legislative reform is critical to lowering auto repair costs, restoring consumer choice in the car repair market, and encouraging industry competition,” said Justin Rzepka, Executive Director of the CAR Coalition. “The bipartisan SMART Act will put the power of choice back in the hands of consumers and local businesses, providing much-needed relief in the face of rising prices and supply chain breakdowns.”

“According to AAA, a third of American drivers can’t afford the costs of an unexpected car repair bill without going into debt,” said Congressman Issa. “As repair costs

continue to rise, consumers deserve access to as many auto part repair options as possible. The SMART Act will increase consumer choice, encourage competition, and foster innovation to drive down the cost of expensive repairs.”

Over the past two decades, automakers have increasingly applied for design patents to restrict consumer access to basic functional parts, including headlamps, doors, and fenders. This anticompetitive practice hurts vehicle owners’ ability to choose from a variety of brands and products when making repairs and costs American consumers more than $1.5 billion per year, according to recent research from the CAR Coalition and DePaul University College of Law.. n

just 37.48 inches.

As with the exterior, the design of the QX50 interior deliberately articulates a sense of advanced human artistry. There is also a strong focus on space and functionality, with innovative packaging that creates ideal roominess and flexibility.

The interior space is highly flexible with a sliding rear bench. The cargo area is 39.0 inches deep with the rear bench slid back – increasing to 44.9 inches with the seats moved forward. As one of few vehicles in its segment to offer sliding second-row seats, the QX50 boasts rear legroom of up to 38.7 inches – sufficient to let rear passengers cross their legs in comfort.

The QX50 is again powered by INFINITI's 2.0-liter VC-Turbo, the world's first production variable compression ratio engine – one of the most advanced internal combustion engines ever created.

This unique variable compression technology represents a breakthrough in combustion engine design. The engine continually transforms, adjusting its compression ratio to optimize power and fuel efficiency. As a result, it combines the power of a 2.0liter turbocharged gasoline engine

with enhanced torque and efficiency.

The VC-Turbo changes its compression ratio seamlessly with an advanced multi-link system, continuously raising or lowering the pistons' reach to transform compression ratio – offering both power and efficiency on demand. A high compression ratio gives greater efficiency, but in certain applications poses the risk of premature combustion (knocking). A low compression ratio allows for greater power and torque, and it avoids knocking.

In operation, the VC-Turbo engine offers any compression ratio between 8:1 (for high performance) and 14:1 (for high efficiency). The engine delivers 268 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. The VC-Turbo's specific power output is higher than many competing turbocharged gasoline engines and comes close to the performance of some V-6 gasoline engines. The unit's singlescroll turbo ensures immediate accelerator responses on demand.

QX50 Sport From Page 14
QX50 SPORT grade receives a visual boost thanks to a unique front fascia, 20-inch dark-painted and machine-finished wheels and gloss black exterior trim pieces.

Equipped with the VC-Turbo engine, the 2021 QX50 is competitively efficient and delivers fuel economy of 26 mpg combined for front-wheel drive and 25 mpg combined for all-wheeldrive models.

Other highlights of the VC-Turbo include compact packaging and weight-saving technologies. The engine block and cylinder head are cast in lightweight aluminum alloy, while the transformative multi-link components are manufactured in high-carbon steel alloy. Compared to INFINITI's 3.5-liter VQ V-6 engine, the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo weighs about 40 pounds less and requires less space in the engine bay.

The engine employs the world's first multi-link system and an electric motor with a unique Harmonic Drive reduction gear to transform its compression ratio. The electric motor is connected to the Harmonic Drive with a control arm; as the Harmonic Drive rotates, the control shaft at the base of the engine rotates, moving the multi-

link system within the engine. As the angle of the multi-link arms changes, it adjusts the top-dead-center position of the pistons – and the compression ratio with them. An eccentric control shaft changes the compression ratio of all the cylinders at the same time. As a result, the engine capacity varies between 1,997 cc (for a low 8:1 ratio) and 1,970 cc (high 14:1 ratio).

The VC-Turbo engine combines a number of existing INFINITI technologies to realize its variable nature. The engine employs both multi-point injection and gasoline direct injection to balance efficiency and power in all conditions:

• Gasoline direct injection improves combustion efficiency and performance, and enables the engine to avoid knocking at higher compression ratios;

• Multi-point injection mixes fuel and air earlier, enabling complete combustion in the chamber for greater efficiency at low engine loads.

The engine switches between

both at regular engine speeds, with both sets of injectors able to work in conjunction under higher loads.

Like all 2023 INFINITI models, lease or retail, sold in the United States, the 2023 QX50 adds the convenience of INFINITI Premium Care. The integrated maintenance program provides a suite of benefits including up to three years of inspections, oil changes and tire rotations, expanding on the luxury automaker's tradition of providing toprated customer satisfaction.

The final piece of the QX50’s appealing offering is a plentiful list of technology intended to streamline and simplify almost every trip. For starters, every QX50 boasts a high level of standard safety technology, including Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Automatic Braking and High Beam Assist. All 2023 QX50 models are equipped as standard with ProPILOT Assist. n

AGs Please From Page 28

Association of Canada (AIA Canada), along with Auto Care Association (ACA) and 19 other aftermarket groups, recently launched a “critical global right to repair movement” for access to in-vehicle and telematics. The groups argue that OEMs are prohibiting their access to and limiting consumers’ choice to have their vehicles repaired at independent shops.

The CAR (Consumer Access to Repair) Coalition has also backed the movement. Their members include insurers, aftermarket parts manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers.

In a March 27 news release, CAR Coalition commends the joint AG letter.

“These attorneys general, as chief consumer protection and antitrust enforcers, are well aware of the

pressure of rising prices on the people in their states. Swift federal legislation is critical to protecting consumers’ right to repair the products they purchase –restoring choice to the repair process, increasing competition, and lowering costs.”

What the coalition and the AGs fail to cover, and didn’t respond to RDN’s inquiries about, is whether the independent or “mom-and-pop” shops that the supposed right to repair issue is affecting already have the ability to meet the rigorous high-tech demands of the modern-day vehicles they are working on. Or if consumers are served well by protecting repair businesses that are unwilling to invest in keeping up with technology advances and providing billpayers, usually automobile insurers in the case of vehicle collision repair, an option to steer customers through their own favored closed sys-

tem of pre-approved shops?

Some of the proponents of the SMART and REPAIR acts through the CAR Coalition have actively lobbied against legislation that would promote adherence to OEM data, and others have been on record with representations that that they don’t think OEM engineering documents and repair procedures that detail how to properly and safely fix vehicles are necessary to be followed.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has found that among drivers that had their vehicles repaired, which were equipped with front crash prevention, blind spot detection, and other visibility-enhancing cameras, half had issues with the features post-repair. The Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package now adds Trailer Reverse Guidance, which uses high-resolution cameras to provide multiple views along with steering guidance graphics to assist in backing up and maneuvering a trailer. The technology works with Pro-Trailer Backup Assist to make backing up a trailer or boat as effortless as turning a dial.

Navigator has the most standard and available driver-assist technologies in its class, and Lincoln continues to build on its comprehensive, standard suite – Lincoln Co-Pilot360™ 2.0†† – to provide clients with additional ways to customize their vehicle.

Additional standard features include Forward Collision Warning, Post Collision Braking, Distance Alert, Dynamic Brake Support, Pedestrian Detection, Auto Hold, hill start assist, automatic headlamps, VoiceActivated Touchscreen Navigation and Phone As A Key. n
