Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) announced the Santa Cruz compact utility vehicle will join the Santa Fe SUV and the Sonata and Elantra sedans at Hyundai’s U.S. automotive assembly plant in Montgomery, starting in 2021. The Santa Cruz was first introduced as a concept at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The plant will require a $410 million

expansion to support the addition of the vehicle. This includes additional space in the stamping, welding and parts processing areas of the manufacturing complex. Hyundai unveiled its Santa Cruz crossover truck concept vehicle earlier this year.

HMMA, which started vehicle production in May 2005, is the River Region’s largest private manufacturer with 2,900 full-time and 500 part-time employees. In 14 and one-half years the plant has produced 4.5 million January 2020

Volkswagen Breaks Ground On Expansion For Electric Vehicle Production In US Volkswagen Group of America executives, joined Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Germany's ambassador to the U.S., Emily Haber, plant leaders, production employees and community leaders at the plant for the groundbreaking.

“This is a big, big moment for this company,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “Expanding local production sets the foundation for our sustainable growth in the U.S. Electric vehicles are the future of mobility and Volkswagen will build them for millions, not just millionaires. " Volkswagen began long-range EV production earlier this month in Zwickau, Germany, and will then roll out assembly worldwide, including in Anting and Foshan, in China, in 2020 and in the German cities of Emden and Hanover by 2022.

The Chattanooga site will be VW's NorthAmerican hub for EV manufacturing.

Volkswagen’s investment of about $800 million in the Chattanooga facility will require the addition of about 1,000 jobs. The production version of the ID. CROZZ will initially be assembled in Zwickau. Production of that vehicle is set to begin in Chattanooga in 2022.

The expansion of the plant includes a 564,000-square-foot addition to the body shop. Volkswagen will build both internal combustion engine vehicles as well as battery electric vehicles on the same assembly line.

“With Volkswagen’s expansion, Tennessee is on the cutting edge of the move to electric vehicles and our workforce is up to the challenge.” Tennessee Gov. Lee said. “We look forward to a continued partnership with VW and the growth of advanced manufacturing in Chattanooga and beyond.”

Ambassador Haber added, "The United States plays an absolutely central role in German carmakers’ global activities.

Tom du Plessis, Volkswagen Chattanooga CEO, said the expansion signals the start of new, high-tech processes in the plant. Hiring for the new assembly will begin in early 2020 and will continue as needed for ramping up production, he said. Positions added for the expansion include supervisors, specialists and a variety of engineers specializing in electrical, software, mechanical, manufacturing, chemical and quality.

“Electric vehicle and electric-vehicle battery production require new and different technical skills than those we currently use,” du Plessis said. “We're working with our colleagues abroad, as well as with the Volkswagen Academy, to ensure our team members are well-prepared.”n

Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG Top ‘10’ New Technologies Introduced for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz has established a long tradition of introducing game-changing innovations that have continued to shape mobility. This pioneering spirit has existed since the first patent was filed for the Benz Patent Motorwagen over 133 years ago in 1886, and with each new model year or vehicle generation Mercedes-Benz has continuously raised the bar for design, performance and technology to set new benchmarks in the industry. For the 2020 model year, here are the top 10 innovative new technologies that Mercedes-Benz has introduced.

1. MBUX with Interior Assistant – Building upon the introduction of Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) from MY19, MBUX Interior Assistant allows intuitive, natural operation of different comfort and MBUX functions through movement recognition.

A camera in the overhead console registers movements of the driver's and front passenger's hands and arms. When a hand approaches the touchscreen or the Touchpad on the center console, the media display changes and individual elements are highlighted. Additionally, there are functions that can be controlled by simple hand gestures. For example, the reading lamp can be switched on and off by extending a hand towards the rearview mirror. The driver and front passenger can both program a personal, favorite function which is initiated using a horizontally outstretched index and middle finger 2.E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL – Developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz, E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL is a fully networked hydropneumatic, active suspension on a 48-volt platform, for the first time in combination with a newly-developed air suspension. This is the only system in the market where the spring and damping forces can be individually controlled at each wheel. This means that it not only significantly counteracts body roll, but also pitch and squat.

3. Carwash Function – A new standard function for the next generation GLS, when the Carwash Function is selected the vehicle automatically – Adjusts the suspension to the highest position.

Folds in the exterior mirrors.

Closes the side windows and the sliding sunroof.

Suppresses the rain sensor information so that the windshield wipers remain switched off in the carwash.

Switches the climate control to air-recirculation mode and, after eight seconds, activates the 360° camera's front image to assist the driver when driving into the carwash.

Deactivates these settings automatically when the driver drives out of the carwash and accelerates to a speed above 12 mph.

4.Fully-variable 4MATIC – First premiering in the MY20 GLE, Mercedes- Benz has further developed the highly successful 4MATIC system with the introduction of fully variable all-wheel. This sophisticated system can vary torque distribution between the front and rear axle from 0-100%, depending on the selected driving mode, to further improve handling and traction in any situation.

5. V8 Engine with 48-Volt System – For MY20 Mercedes-Benz added an electrified V8 to the GLE and GLS model ranges with the new GLE 580 and the GLS 580. At the heart of this sophisticated engine is the powerful, electrified V8 biturbo gasoline engine with a 48-volt on-board electrical system and integrated starter generator. This advanced powerplant offers an impressive output of 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. In addition, it is capable of producing an extra 184 lb-ft of torque and 21 horsepower through EQ Boost over short periods. The integrated starter generator (ISG) is responsible for hybrid functions such as EQ Boost and energy recuperation, resulting in fuel savings previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology. The innovative ISG eliminates the need for a belt drive for ancillary components at the front of the engine, which reduces its overall length.

6. New '35' and newly developed '45' engine variant – The latest point of entry to the world of Mercedes-AMG. Now offered in the CLA and A- Class, the high torque, AMG-enhanced 2.0L Inline-4 turbo engine delivers 302 horsepower and is based on the M260 four-cylinder engine in the new A-Class Sedan. The CLA 45 is now powered by the newly developed M139 2.0-liter engine, the world's most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder manufactured for series production producing 382 hp and 354 lb-ft.

7. Active Stop-and-Go Assist – First introduced in the MY20 GLE, the Active Stop-and-Go Assist driver assistance system enables the vehicle to recognize traffic jams at an early stage, actively supporting the driver in stop-and-go traffic up to approximately 37 mph.

8. Cross-Traffic Function - If there is a danger of a collision with oncoming traffic when making a turn, the vehicle can brake at the speeds typical of such maneuvers. Braking intervention takes place if the driver signals the intention to turn (with the turn signals) and the vehicle can brake to a stop before crossing the lane marking.

9. Exit Warning Function – For MY20, vehicles equipped with Blind Spot Assist include an added Vehicle Exit Warning function, which can lower the risk of a collision with other road users after the vehicle is parked, such as passing cyclists. Vehicle Exit Warning monitors the blind spot when the vehicle is at a standstill or parked, and can warn the driver of approaching vehicles, motorcycles or bicycles when opening the door. This function is even active for up to three minutes after switching off the engine. The warning appears in the exterior mirrors and is audibly signaled via the instrument cluster.

10. ENERGIZING COACH – This new feature within ENERGIZING COMFORT acts as a guide for users. Based on an intelligent algorithm, ENERGIZING COACH recommends a specific program depending on the situation and individual. If a compatible Garmin® wearable is worn, personal values such as stress level or quality of sleep optimize the accuracy of the recommendation. The aim is for passengers to feel refreshed and relaxed even during demanding or monotonous journeys 6

Gerber Collision & Glass Acquires Two Locations in Alabama The Boyd Group Inc. (the "Boyd Group") today announced the acquisition of two collision repair centers in Alabama.

The location in Huntsville originated in 1981 and has operated as Quality Body Shop. The location in Pelham has operated as Oak Mountain Body Shop since 2001.

Ford Donates $100,000 to the NADA Foundation’s Workforce Initiative “Ford is acutely aware of the current automotive service technician shortage,” said Frederiek Toney, president, Global Ford Customer Service Division. “The NADA Foundation’s Workforce Initiative is just one program Ford is supporting to raise awareness of and access to training and job opportunities in this growing field.”

In 2019, the NADA Foundation launched the initiative that features a new website, nadafoundation.org, which includes the first and only interactive U.S. map of training and scholarship opportunities available for aspiring technicians, as well as videos featuring a variety of technicians highlighting their careers and the challenging nature of their work. One video example features Scott Walker, a service technician at ADESA Auto Auction outside of Washington, D.C. “Ford joins an esteemed group of car and commercial truck manufacturers that support the NADA Foundation’s efforts to spark an interest in service technician careers,” said Annette Sykora, chairman of the NADA Foundation and 2008 NADA chairman. “Together, we can work together to attract great talent to our dynamic industry.”

Sykora, dealer principal of Smith South Plains Ford Lincoln in Levelland, Texas, added that her dealership over the years has helped young men and women find fulfilling careers locally in the automotive industry.

“Automotive technicians keep our families mobile and company fleets running by providing the necessary maintenance and repairs to our customers’ cars and trucks,” Sykora added. “These technicians have life balance and the means to provide financial stability for their families. Seeing them grow in knowledge and skill in a job they enjoy is heartwarming to an employer.”

BMW and MINI Dealers Can Now Access Their Collision Parts Marketing Programs OEConnection LLC (OEC), the leading automotive technology provider for original equipment manufacturers' (OEM) distribution networks, announced that BMW of North America has selected CollisionLink for its U.S. collision parts marketing programs for both BMW and MINI, entitled 'BMW Collision Support with CollisionLink,' and "MINI Collision Support with CollisionLink,' respectively. Groundbreaking Carbon Core passenger cell technology is the key element on the body structure. Thanks to its composite construction featuring CFRP, ultra-hightensile steels and aluminum, the intelligent body design succeeds in increasing the strength and rigidity of the passenger cell while also bringing about a substantial reduction in vehicle weight. By using a hybrid construction of CFRP with ultrahigh-tensile steels for structural elements, such as those found in the B-pillars, the design of the sheet-metal components can be adapted to save weight.

The Carbon Core body is based on technology transferred from BMW i car development. The all-new BMW 7 Series is the first ever vehicle in which mass produced CFRP is used in combination with steel and aluminum. The BMW Group’s expertise in producing carbon fiber in the manufacturing of high-volume vehicles is unrivalled in the automotive sector. The new BMW flagship model pioneers the creation of new possible applications for this high-tech material.

The lightweight design concept also entails the use of aluminum for specific sections of the body and chassis. For the first time doors and the trunk lid are made of aluminum. Taking suspension comfort and dynamic handling to new levels, the rigorous implementation of lightweight design measured at the suspension, brakes and wheels, reduced the unsprung masses by as much as 15 percent. Lightweight bonding technologies have been employed with near-source thermal and acoustic shielding for the engine, which enables the overall volume and weight of the insulating material to be reduced. The innovative insulation concept has the additional effect of further improving acoustic comfort.

Safety Concerns with Self-Driving Vehicles Addressed During U.S. Senate Committee Hearing Pointing to a fatal Uber crash last year, a U.S. Senate committee on Wednesday focused on how to best address safety challenges involving autonomous vehicles (AVs).

A self-driving Uber car in Tempe, Ariz., struck and killed a woman in 2018.

The U.S. Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee held a hearing titled “Highly Automated Vehicles: Federal Perspectives on the Deployment of Safety Technology.” During his opening statement, Sen. Roger Wicker, (R-MS), committee chairman, said “… safety is and will continue to be paramount.”

At the hearing, Sen. Maria Cantwell, (D-WA), questioned Dr. James Owens, acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about why there aren’t already safety standards for Level 1 or Level 2 AVs. Owens said safety standards will be developed when the technology is proven to be safe. He explained that these technologies are still in the emerg-

ing stages.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 36,000 people were killed on America’s roadways last year, and 94 percent of those fatalities can be attributed to human error.

Senators echoed similar sentiments that AVs have the opportunity to not only be a lifesaving technology, but expand and improve mobility options for elderly or those with a disability.

In addition, Owens said his agency is in constant communication with stakeholders and auto manufacturers discussing technical issues. They have not yet created safety standards to avoid limiting innovation or competition.

While the NHTSA does have a selfsafety assessment program, it is voluntary.

Out of 80 manufacturers and developers, only 16 of those have submitted self-safety assessments to NHTSA regarding their advanced driving systems.

“This technology needs some standards, it doesn’t mean they will never change,” Cantwell said, “but we are hear-

ing from the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB), that if you want to have a safe-testing environment, you need to put some condition[s] on that.”

Bob Redding, ASA’s Washington, D.C. representative, said Congress should also consider how to ensure that these vehicles continue to operate safely from a mechanical perspective as part of any AV legislation.

“This is an opportunity to get it right and require that these vehicles be inspected by state-approved programs each year,” Redding said. “In addition, failure to address vehicle data access for independent repairers in what might possibly be the only related legislation to be considered in the 116th Congress should concern consumers and automotive repairers.”

The hearing also addressed other issues with the AVs such as usage of the 5G spectrum, future of the automotive labor workforce, cybersecurity and privacy concerns and education for vehicle owners on AV features.n

Mike Anderson Inducted into Collision Repair Industry Hall of Eagles Calling him one of the “greatest influencers” in the collision repair industry, 1Collision Network President Jim Keller announced the Hall of Eagles had added Collision Advice CEO Albert Michael “Mike” Anderson to its ranks.

The Hall of Eagles is the collision repair industry’s hall of fame. Inductees must be nominated by an existing member and approved by two-thirds of the entire hall. 2000 inductee Rick Tuuri (retired, AudaExplore) noted that getting two people in the industry to agree was difficult, and getting two thirds of an “august body” like the hall was “pretty incredible.”

Anderson said it might be hard to believe, but he was at a loss for words to convey his appreciation and “how humble and grateful I am. I just pledge that I will do everything I can to represent this organiza-

tion and all that they stand for.”

He called himself “very honored, I’m very humbled, and just thank you so very much.”

Keller, a 1989 inductee, said Anderson was an early adopter of delivering safe and proper repairs through OEM procedures; supporting I-CAR training; preparing “thorough, accurate estimates” using OEM procedures; and “always doing the right thing” for employees and customers.

Anderson had traveled extensively throughout the country “positively influencing thousands of collision repair businesses,” according to Keller.

Keller said he on numerous occasions heard, “‘He (Anderson) said I must do this, so therefore I must.'” He said Anderson influenced shop owners to do the right

thing and opened eyes.

Keller said audience members had probably heard Anderson speak at events like CIC, NACE or SEMA, been part of one of his business group councils, been inspired by a keynote; read one of his numerous articles or watched one of his video interviews or presentations; or used one of his operational SOPs. Audience members from OEMs, insurers or information providers probably had been helped by Anderson’s input, according to Keller.

Keller said Anderson compelled audiences to “rise, and take action.”

Anderson also has served as a past director of the Automotive Service Association’s collision operations panel and on the board of the Washington Metropolitan Auto Body Association.n

2020 Volkswagen Jetta: New Technology Elevates The Iconic Sedan The Volkswagen Jetta is one of the world’s most successful sedans, with more than 17.5 million models sold worldwide since it was introduced in 1979: more than 3.2million of those have been sold in the United States. The Volkswagen Jetta is available in five trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. Jetta models receive more technology features for 2020. All models are equipped with the next-generation Car-Net® telematics system and have in-car Wi-Fi capability when you subscribe to a data plan. Jetta SEL and SEL Premium models also offer standard wireless charging.

Senators Kennedy and Blumenthal Send Consent Decree Support Joint Letter to Department of Justice The Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) commends Senator. Kennedy (R-LA) and Senator Blumenthal (D-CT) for their joint letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) which urges the Department to preserve a consent decree intended to protect consumers which was reached in the case of U.S. v. Association of Casualty and Surety Companies, et al..

Both Senators serve on the important Senate Judiciary Committee which has oversight over the DOJ. The letter dated November 19, asserts that "eliminating this agreement would turn back the clock on automotive consumer protections," and that "sincere and thoughtful concerns raised by constituents" have led to a conclusion that "the merits and relevance of this decree warrant its

continuation."

In April 2019, the DOJ announced plans to review nearly 1,300 antitrust judgments enacted without end dates, and in August, the 1963 Consent Decree was identified as one of the actions proposed for termination as part of a much larger de-regulatory initiative by the current administration.

The Consent Decree has served as a significant document for consumers which highlight an agreement between the insurance industry and the US government to forever refrain from practices that were established as anti-competitive means of steering, price fixing and depressing and controlling automobile material damage repair costs.

The DOJ held an open com-

ment period, which was extended specifically for comments on this Decree to October 2, 2019, becoming one of the two most-commented-on Decrees of the 1300 proposed for termination.

Since the close of the comment period, SCRS has been working on behalf of members, affiliates and the industry at large (and in tandem with consumer representatives) to garner additional support from Members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. The association has arranged multiple meetings in D.C. with subject matter experts on the Consent Decree, with key offices on Capitol Hill. The lower instrument panel has a similar horizontal design, with a fine decorative trim strip that runs beneath the cockpit, across the entire instrument panel, and into the doors.

The front seats feature an ergonomically-optimized backrest release that makes adjustments for front-seat occupants especially easy. For an extra luxurious touch, the power-adjustable seats of the SEL Premium offer standard perforated-leather seating surfaces with heating and front-seat ventilation.

SEL and SEL Premium models offer the Drive Mode Selection feature as standard equipment. This system includes four modes to choose from: “Normal,” “Sport,” “Eco,” and “Custom.”

SEL and SEL Premium trims also feature Volkswagen Digital Cockpit technology, which offers drivers a reconfigurable instrument-panel screen instead of conventional instrumentation. The high-tech, 10.25-inch display can show key vehicle data in five driver-selectable modes, including one that positions navigation data (on SEL Premium models with factory-installed navigation) front and center for easy viewing.

Every Jetta model offers standard Driver Personalization with up to four driver settings. Dependent on trim, customizable features include: driver seat memory, drive mode selection, driver assistance system preferences, climate control, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit arrangement, ambient lighting color, radio presets, navigation view, and more.

MIB II Infotainment. All 2020 Jetta models feature Volkswagen’s innovative MIB II touchscreen infotainment system.

The display utilizes a capacitive-touch sensor (as in smartphone and tablet technology) rather than the more common resistive touchscreens that require pressure, enabling gesture controls like swiping and even pinch-zooming.

Discover Media unit. Both units offer two USB-A ports, a JPEG viewer, SiriusXM® radio for a three month trial period, and HD Radio. Both units also have the ability to send and receive SMS text messages via Bluetooth with compatible phones and can pair two phones simultaneously. The Discover Media unit offers 2.5 D navigation, featuring one-shot voice destination entry, typed destination entry with search and auto-complete, and can predict possible destinations based on frequently used routes.

Since its debut for the 2014 model year, Volkswagen Car-Net has allowed Volkswagen owners to get connected to their vehicles. For model year 2020, CarNet moves into the next generation of integration, with an updated mobile app, a long list of no-charge services for five years, and new subscription options. CarNet Services will be offered in four areas: Remote Access, Safe & Secure, Hotspot, and Guide & Inform.

These consumers can also find a parked vehicle more quickly and receive alerts with a compatible smartwatch.

A standard feature on the 2020 Jetta is Volkswagen’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. This builds on the premise that a collision is rarely a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of events that follow the initial impact—the most significant of which can cause additional collisions.
