From the Principal’s Office This year we celebrate 102 years of excellence in educating a community of global women. When I first arrived at Saint Saviour I made sure one of the first things I did was read the Mission of the school, I am a strong believer in the mission. Everyday we challenge our students to achieve the fullest measure of their potential. I am honored to serve as the Principal of Saint Saviour High School, a school rich in tradition, moving forward and preparing girls to thrive in the world around them. This is truly an exciting time in the history of Saint Saviour. There are constant upgrades to the building, without ever taking away the feeling you get when you walk into the lobby. Our enrollment is up; seniors are being accepted to amazing colleges. Students are learning incredible subject matter in many cases that was saved for college courses and pay it forward whenever they can. As I look out the door in my office the mounds of socks building daily is just a small example of what they do locally, nationally and globally. Things have changed in the world we live in but our mission has remained constant, we challenge our students to achieve the fullest measure of their potential. We are preparing leaders, while always guiding in spiritual development and strengthen their awareness of social and moral responsibilities. Those are the words of our mission and what we believe. This is what makes Saint Saviour special and unique. This is why we have girls walking the halls today, the same halls their great grandmothers, grandmothers, moms, aunts and sisters walked, they are legacy girls, all made possible because of the support of those that came before us. In the words of Michelle Obama We have a responsibility to live up to the legacy of those who came before us by doing all that we can to help those who come after us. I invite you to school, walk around, talk to the girls they will wow you. The generosity of our alumni, parents and friends is overwhelming to me. Life is good on 6th street. May God watch over us proudly Mrs. Carolann Timpone

From the Advisory Board Dear Saint Saviour Alumnae and Friends, Welcome to the Annual Report from St. Saviour High School. It is my pleasure to write to you, as the new chairperson of the SSHS Advisory Board. Be assured that I consider it a privilege to have this opportunity. I joined this new board knowing that your support of your Alma Mater is irreplaceable not only for your financial support but also for your continued belief in the mission and goals of the school that we all love. I thank you for all that you have done and assure you that you are appreciated. Life at St. Saviour’s has gone through many changes since September. Our new Principal, Mrs. Carol Timpone has taken on the leadership role with tremendous expertise, experience and an energy that has no boundaries. With the support of Mrs. Margaret. Bernstein, Assistant Principal and all of the experience, SSHS history and traditions that she contributes, they have created a strong leadership team. Along with the faculty and staff, we can be sure that SSHS is in the hands of people who believe in and are dedicated to the educational and spiritual mission that has been the foundation of the school for over 100 years. From the opening of school in September until right now, the spirit of young ladies of St. Saviour has been highly visible. From embracing the academic challenges of the new school year to performing in the annual Song Contest, the unique Saviourite spirit abounds. As alumnae and friends of SSHS, we can be very proud of the young women who followed us and now create their own legacy at SSHS. And so, I thank you on behalf of the Advisory Board of St. Saviour High School for continuing to be a very important part of the St. Saviour community. You are valuable to your Alma Mater in more ways than you realize. Please continue to support and pray for the school that was your second home for 4 years. There is more to do and you are needed to make it all happen. Many, many thanks! Sincerely, Geri Martinez Class of 1964

Student Highlights

In November 2018, students in the Physics Class designed and constructed a device to protect an egg during a free fall from various heights. Students first tested the devices in the lab then in the courtyard for additional heights. Very specific materials could be used and because of that, most of the eggs survived!

In February 2019, Mina ‘20 participated in the 23rd Annual High School Poster Session at St. Joseph’s College NY. Her advance science research classmates along with their teacher and St. Joe’s alum Ms. Ramkellowan were there to cheer her on! They also listened to the keynote address on “4D Nanoscale Printing” by Professor Adam Braunschweig from the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, Nanoscience Initiative Team. In February 2019, as part of our study of Fingerprint Evidence, the students in the Forensic Science class (a senior elective) learned the proper techniques used to process latent (hidden) prints on both dark and light surfaces.

In December 2018, the Gospel Choir performed at the tree lighting ceremony in Grand Army Plaza with Bishop DiMarzio.

In January 2019, Pandas were in DC for the March for Life.

Student Highlights

In March 2019, Saint Saviour marched in both the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC and the Brooklyn Irish American Day Parade in Park Slope. In March 2019, students in the Physics Class designed and constructed a catapult to accurately launch an object to various distances at different angles. They first tested the devices in the lab and then in the gym for additional distances.

In March 2019, students attended the Brooklyn Frontiers in Science Lecture at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Students learned about the coming epidemic of neurodegenerative disease and what science is doing about it. In March 2019, Saint Saviour High School held a Ribbon Cutting, Blessing, and Dedication of the school’s indoor hydroponic greenhouse classroom. Saint Saviour is the first high school in the Brooklyn Diocese to offer this experience in partnership with New York Sun Works’ Greenhouse Project. The hydroponic greenhouse classroom was blessed by The Most Reverend James Massa and was dedicated to former faculty member Ms. Roberta Willard who began teaching environmental science at Saint Saviour in the 1980s, retiring in 2012.

As the founder of Saint Saviour’s Environmental Science program, Ms. Willard’s vision was the springboard for the creation of the new hydroponic greenhouse classroom. Ms. Willard was extremely grateful the classroom was dedicated to her: “After 31 years of teaching at Saint Saviour and running beach clean-ups and other environmental community service projects, I am extremely honored to be a part of this special day with my Saint Saviour family.”

The hydroponic greenhouse classroom is under the management of Science Department Chairperson and alumna Ms. Eileen Cush. Saint Saviour High School believes that hydroponic farming technology is a unique innovation in learning that provides students with the resources they need to meet the challenges of the future and be leaders of a better world. Some of the crops that have been grown hydroponically in the classroom include cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, lettuce, mint, rosemary as well as nasturtium, an edible flower. New York Sun Works, founded in 2004, is a non-profit organization that uses hydroponic farming (soil-less planting) technology to educate students and teachers about the science of sustainability. NY Sun Works created the Greenhouse Project, an initiative dedicated to improving K–12 grade environmental science education through the lens of urban agriculture, empowering children to make educated choices about their impact on the environment.

Quyn McCaffrey, Class of 2021 Hello! I’m Quyn McCaffrey, class of 2021, and I just started my junior year! So much has happened already this year: the awards assembly and the walkathon, just to name two. I was so excited that we got to do the walkathon this year, and it was so much fun this time around! Song Contest is already fast approaching, and this year the Jonas Juniors are coming for first place! We have been practicing nonstop and we really think we have what it takes to come out on top this year. Song Contest is truly one of my favorite SSHS traditions, and it always blows my mind how much effort all the grades put forward to make the event the most spectacular of our lives! It’s really incredible to see all the Pandas come together and show the true sisterhood that this school displays so powerfully.

see that my school has such a motivation to lead women to greatness. When I walk through the doors every morning, I know that my day is going to be filled with positive people who love and support my ambitions and plans. Over the summer, I took part in the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program for rising juniors and seniors. I found it so powerful to see the message of sisterhood so wonderfully reflected in a group of young women, and it reminded me so much of Saint Saviour. On my application to Girls Who Code, I had written about the strong all-girl community found at SSHS and I was so happy to see that they had accepted my application based on the words I wrote. Now, because of this wonderful experience over the summer, I have a passion for computer science and plan to pursue that in the future! It’s so beautiful to

18

My junior year already has been so full, and hearing advice from the seniors has been helpful, particularly their advice about how to navigate a year that is so vital to my future. I knew from the first moment that I walked into Saint Saviour that it was the right place for me, and now, three years into this journey, I still experience the warm sense of community I felt at the beginning when I was a mere freshman.

Thank you to our co-chair of this year’s SSHS Mother Daughter Luncheon, Erinkate Joseph Peart ‘90. She has been a valuable member of our fundraising team for the past four years; her daughter Justine’19 graduated from SSHS in June. Rani Ramlakhan ‘95 shared this amazing story with us of Saviour sisters connecting: “I reside in Wellington, FL. Today, I attended the Knights of Columbus Columbiettes’ Victorian Tea Party held at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles, my church in Royal Palm Beach. I graduated from SSHS in Brooklyn, NY class of ‘95. To my surprise sitting at the same table was another Saviourite, Peggy Clavin Brown, Class of ‘45. After talking with the ladies, my ring came up and that’s how we knew we went to the same high school. Wear your ring proudly! You never know where you will find your sisters in the future!”
