Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Easington Sports Football Club and we hope you all enjoy our hospitality here this afternoon on what will be your first ever visit to St Neots.
Our last game here at the Premier Plus Stadium saw us defeat early bookies favourites, Daventry Town 4-1 with Sam Johnson, Nathan George (2) and Rev Kalek scoring the Saints goals. This game also saw debuts for new signings Jordan Brown and Matteo Perkins. At The same time, we say good bye to Lorell Smith and Jack Barnett and wish them both well going forward.
Last Saturday saw us make the lengthy trip up to Clipstone FC (which is near Mansfield) for our United Counties League Knockout Cup Preliminary Round Tie on what was one of the hottest days of the year. Before kick off, our hosts were sitting at the top Of The First Division with a 100 per t d a d a a babl all aware by now, we exited the competition half display and you can read John Walker‘s m elsewhere within this edition.

St Neots recorded their first away league victory of the season against both the odds and expectations returning from Banbury with three points. It was only their second victory in six visits to Banbury and the home side were on a seven-match unbeaten run stretching back more than a month. In addition, St Neots were forced into five team changes from their previous outing with skipper Luke Knight suspended, Harry O’Malley ill, Gary Wharton injured and Taylor Parr unavailable plus Manager Matt Clements reinstated Finley Iron in goal after he was cup tied for the Stortford match. Into the side came man of the match Nabil Shariff after his brief spell at Stratford, James Peters after injury, Ben Worman (also cup-tied by his parent club) and Dan Olaniran after five matches on the substitutes bench. A goal down after 17 minutes the reshaped visiting side had to dig deep to compete in the opening half hour but Shariff’s double strike before the break breathed confidence into the side. He was not the only player to impress with Iron making several significant saves, Worman impressive in midfield and acting skipper Johnny Herd outstanding in both defense and attack.
Banbury looked the better side in the opening twenty minutes with their two speedy wide players putting the St Neots defense under significant pressure.From a first minute Ravi Shamsi corner Iron had to produce a smart save to deny Lee Henderson and them both Shamsi and Rasulo fired over the bar when well placed. Greg Kaziboni shredded the St Neots defense to set up Rasulo who shot narrowly wide, and St Neots only real opening during this spell when Claudio Ofosu sped past two players to set up Dion Sembie-Ferris whose off-balance volley passed over the bar. The home pressure paid off after 17 minutes when a long clearance from goalkeeper James Goff was touched on by Jack Self and Tom Wood seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball and Ravi Shamsi ran through to beat the retreating Iron.Ofosu was proving a threat to the home defense and he cut in to fire over the bar before testing Goff with a rising effort. He then provided the important equalizing goal as he picked out Sembie-Ferris with a delightful crossfield pass and he cleverly set up Nabil Shariff for a close-range finish after half an hour. Seven minutes later Ben Worman‘s chip over the defense saw Nabil Shariff dart between two defenders and beat the approaching keeper with a low finish.Iron made the save of the first half to deny Kaziboni and a minute before the break St Neots could have gone further ahead but the unmarked Wood headed over from a Williams corn
BSt Neots carried on after half time where they had left off and after 59 minutes a searching run and cross by Shariff was only cleared as far as Dylan Williams who produced a delightful well-placed shot into the corner of the net. That provoked a determined Banbury response and Iron had to go full length to push away a shot by Ricky Johnson. Injuries to Williams and Sembie-Ferris meant two St Neots substitutions midway through the second half but the rearranged St Neots attack still looked threatening on the break. Banbury too, threw on substitutes and adopted a more attacking approach but their only success was a Shamsi free kick well handled by Iron.With ten minutes left St Neots sent on Jack Keeble for the tiring Ofosu and shortly afterwards a long clearance found Shariff wide right and he advanced to test Goff who prevented his hat trick with a fine save. A late punch clear by Iron from another Shamsi effort was the home sides’ last chance and St Neots ran out comfortable and deserved winners.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO EASINGTON SPORTS FOR THE FIRST EVER MEETING OF OUR TWO SIDES
Easington Sports are based in Banbury in Oxfordshire – neighbours of Banbury United who now ply their trade in the National League North. Now playing at their present level for more than fifty years, Easington yo-yo’d around divisions in the Hellenic League due to their geographic position in that league before being transferred to the UCL two seasons ago.In 2021/22 they finished 14th in the league table, improving to finish 11th last season.Currently with just six matches completed they are sixteenth having won one drawn two and lost four of their six completed league fixtures. Their victory came ten days ago at home to Rugby Borough whom they beat by the odd goal in five and they followed that up last Saturday with an excellent 2-1 victory over Gedling Miners Welfare in the Sports Ground Development KO Cup. In the FA Cup this season they beat Burnham 3-1 before losing to at Reading City in a Preliminary Round replay whilst in the FA Vase they bowed out at the first hurdle beaten 5-2 at home by Edgware and Kingsbury who play in the Premier Division North of the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League. This will, of course, be the first meeting of our two sides.

This is the fifth in a series highlighting one of our final seasons at Shortsands to depict both the highs and the lows in the recent proud history of the Club. This was our fifth season back in the UCL since our spell in the Eastern Counties League and it followed the previous season that had been our best league finish in nine seasons – also in the UCL. Stamford won their second league title in three seasons beating us home and away, but the most impressive statistic of the season came from full back Gary How who played in all 55 league and cup fixtures but not scoring – his only St Neots’ goal came the following season in the away league match at Bourne Town.

Our league form was very patchy especially at home where we won just eight of our nineteen league matches the highlight of which was a 5-0 victory over Kempston Rovers
We also scored five goals in an away match at Long Buckby and four more at bottom club Holbeach.
We retained the Senior Cup but lost to Arlesey in the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final
Our Reserve side finished fourth in Division Two of the UCL but lost at Hemingford in the Hunts Benevolent Cup quarter-final
The top goal scorer was Steve Clark with 13 goals followed by Carmino Picillo 12 but special mention for Terry Minett who topped the Reserves scoring chart with 16 as well as scoring 10 for the senior team
The Manager was Jack Blyth and his Assistant John Benson in the second of their third season’s joint reign.

ST NEOTS U18 1 BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS U18 1 (Bugbrooke won 4-2 on penalties)
Bugbrooke gained revenge for their defeat by St Neots in this competition eight years ago when they successfully concluded a penalty shoot-out as two home players saw their spot kicks saved by visiting keeper William Panter. It was the third time in the past four seasons that St Neots had been beaten in their first match in the National competition.
The visitors began confidently as Levon Stewart looped an early effort over the St Neots crossbar and then home keeper Alex Bent had to be alert to save a Jack Culwick header following a free kick. At the other end Frankie Webster burst through but saw his effort deflected for a corner. Then after 16 minutes St Neots took the lead when Finley Morris was left unmarked, and he cut in to net. Bent was again in action turning an effort by Stewart over the bar before a St Neots effort was ruled out by an offside flag. The visitors finished the first half strongly and only a brave save by Bent at the feet of Lenon Muma kept the narrow lead intact at the break.
St Neots enjoyed their best spell at the start of the second half. Harleigh Camfield shot across the face of goal and then visiting keeper William Panter saved bravely at his feet. Lucca Edwards shot wide, but the pattern of the match changed after 65 minutes when St Neots were reduced to ten men when Hanson Graham was sent off. The home side regrouped with just one man up front and set about soaking up a series of determined attacks by the visiting side.Chris Muchapa should have done better when played clear and Bent saved well from Carter Oakes but eleven minutes from time the pressure paid off as St Neots conceded a penalty and from the spot Levon Stewart levelled the scores from a rebound after Bent had pushed his first effort onto a post. Neither side looked like winning in normal time and so a penalty shoot-out decided the outcome. St Neots scored their first spot kick but two saves by the visiting keeper from Caleb Wright and Uriah Brewster settled the contest.

St Neots returned to winning ways with an impressive victory over the fancied Daventry side that had accompanied them down from Step Four at the end of last season. It was a victory achieved in some style with four goals scored and only an added time goal against to blot an otherwise unblemished performance. Their midweek signing striker Jordan Brown was the star of the show deservedly winning the man of the match award with an energetic performance that ripped open the visiting defence. With striker Lorrell Smith opting to move on and his expected replacement Dom Lawless unavailable, the signing of Brown, who last played for St Neots seven years earlier as a developing member of their youth side, was perfect timing as the pre-season promotion favourites were put to the sword. Apart from Brown replacing Lawless the only other team change saw the return of Rev Kalek in defence for Malaki Black who was on the bench.
After the opening exchanges former Saint Leon Lobjoit had an early shot blocked for the visitors and Sam Johnson shot over the bar at the other end. After twelve minutes Jordan Brown wriggled through the visiting defence to be brough down just inside the box and after consulting an Assistant, the Referee awarded a penalty and booked visiting keeper Kacper Kurylowicz. Sam Johnson confidently despatched the penalty kick and ten minutes later Harvey Williams had a net bound shot deflected for a corner. As expected Lobjoit was always going to be a handful for the home defence, but he squandered a good chance to level the scores heading over from ten yards after 31v minutes. St Neots reinforced their hold on the match eight minutes before the break when from a Johnson corner Nathan George rose above the defence to head home his first goal for St Neots. Brown was again brought down but St Neots were unable to take advantage of the free kick but three minutes before the break it was Brown who saw a narrow-angled effort rebound from a post.
The visitors had a player sin-binned early in the second half and St Neots took full advantage after 55 minutes when from a Johnson corner Rev Kalek side footed home at the far post to record his first goal for St Neots. The home was now dominating play and Dean Dummett saw an effort deflected for a corner. After 65 minutes it was 4-0 when another Johnson corner was only cleared as far as Nathan George who smashed home his second goal of the match to put his side in an unassailable position. Second half substitutes seemed to boost the visiting side who finished the match strongly and they were rewarded in injury time when a goalkeeping error handed Lobjoit a consolation goal against his former side.

There was big disappointment for St Neots as they crashed out of the League Cup competition at the first hurdle, beaten by lower graded Clipstone. However, it was a St Neots side short of key players for with Josh Brown and James Hatch already on the injury list they were joined by goalkeeper James Goff and skipper Kyle Lincoln meaning that the heart of the side was missing for this tricky tie. Also missing was full back Dammy Nickels away on business so the visiting side lined up with the heart of their defence missing. But it was great credit to Division One outfit Clipstone who took their 100% start in league and cup to nine matches although visiting Manager Cameron Mawer was very displeased with the performance of his side. “Having comeback from a goal down to lead at the break there was no excuse for a lacklustre second half performance” he said. It was a very unusual match with four of the seven goals coming in time added at the end of either half.
The host side looked bright and confident from the start. Jack Gibb fired wide from the first real opening, but St Neots were finding themselves pushed back by a fluid home attack. Then after 17 minutes Clipstone went ahead from their third corner when defender Charlie Taylor netted with a well-placed header. The visitors tried to respond with Harvey Williams looking lively and after 26 minutes he brought a fine save from home custodian Josh Turton after going past two defenders. Young visiting keeper Seb Stacey then had to save at the feet of Will Heather and at the other end St Neots thought they had a good shout for a penalty when Jordan Brown went down in the area, but the Referee waved play on. However, as the game moved into added time at the end of the first half St Neots pulled a goal back as Williams got to the bye line to cross for Jordan Brown to tap in from close range. Even better was to follow because five minutes into added time full back Tommy Reynolds moved up to send a low shot past the home keeper to afford St Neots an unexpected half time lead.
Clipstone returned after the break looking resolute and in a sixty seconds’ spell on 56 minutes they scored not once but twice to reinstate their initial lead. The first came when Jordan Roberts was given too much space on the right William Heather lost his marker to head past Stacey and before the visitors had recovered from the shock the home side scored again when a searing shot from Charlie Hardwick was pushed away at full stretch by Stacey and home striker Jack Gibb was the first to react placing the ball in the unguarded net. St Neots needed a positive reaction to this setback, but they struggled to find any rhythm to their attack, and they began to look frustrated with Dean Dummett finding his way into the Referee’s notebook for an over-zealous challenge on the home keeper. The visitors then had to throw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser and that would prove to be their downfall. After substitute Dom Lawless had squandered their best opening firing over from close range, Clipstone produced the perfect counter when five minutes into added time Ryan Ingram took advantage of the absent defence to make it 4-2 and three minutes later Will Heather claimed his second goal of the game to complete a disappointing afternoon for the visitors.

The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service.
The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C.
The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality.
The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties).
In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semi-professional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members).
Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record.
The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/platform to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth.
In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 34 affiliated teams, both boys and girls, three male adult teams, two ladies teams and a new pan disability team. Our aim is to give local players a direct pathway from youth football into Open age football.
