"Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today‘s United Counties League Premier Division South match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Rugby Borough Football Club and we hope you enjoy our hospitality this afternoon on you first visit to St Neots“.
Last weekend saw us entertain the Champions elect, Wellingborough Town and if I‘m honest, there really was so little between the two sides apart from our visitors having a thirty-five goal striker in their numbers and it was to be this very person, our own ex Cambridge United loanee, Neo Richard-Noel who was to become the match winner with a sublime, curling finish into the far corner of a helpless James Goff‘s goal. A goal worthy of winning any game and talking of great goals, how good was Chris Tavernier‘s long distance rocket which brought us back on level terms. At the time of writing these notes, the video clip of Chris‘s fine strike on our Facebook page has been viewed almost 30,000 times in total.
As you are probably aware, I run the Club‘s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) and we are certainly many individual accounts see a post) on Face 300,000 for the past 90 days and rising daily. so if you do use social media, if you haven‘t d platform a follow.

St Neots travelled to play league leaders Chippenham in the hope of a victory that would keep them in the mix with the early season pacemakers. In the event they had to settle for a point after conceding an early goal but they can feel hard done by being denied two fairly obvious penalties and a shot that rebounded from the woodwork. The Wiltshire side are a much better unit than last season and although a fourth draw in eight matches may be disappointing this was probably a point won rather than two surrendered. There was just one change in the starting line up with Adam Tann preferred to Brett Longden who was on the bench at right back and also amongst the substitutes was Josh Beech a recent acquisition from neighbours Biggleswade Town.
St Neots made a very positive start and looked to be cruelly denied a penalty in the very first minute when following an Isaac Galliford corner the ball bobbled around in the six yards box before a St Neots shot was clearly handled on a goal line but the unsighted Referee waved play on. Ryan Hawkins then sent in a teasing cross from the right and with Tom Meechan waiting to pounce home keeper Kent Kauppinnen dived forward to claim the ball.However the bright start was quickly eradicated when Chippenham took the lead in their first attack after nine minutes.Again the goal came from a corner swung in by Michael Pook and when the defence failed to clear James Guthrie dug out the ball from under his feet to score from close range. All the early openings at both ends came from set pieces as an in swinging Hawkins free kick was half volleyed by an off balance Tom Ward wide of target with the keeper stranded. Chris Allen then had a real chance to extend the lead as he showed fine pace to go past the last defender before shooting badly wide. After twenty minutes Nathan Frater got involved in a verbal exchange with the Referee after one of his colleagues was clearly fouled with the award of a free kick and he was booked for dissent and then Kaupinnen made a fine save at his near post from a narrow angled effort by Meechan.Guthrie was also yellow carded for a cynical tackle bringing down Hawkins from behind as he sped towards goal and the half ended with Matt Jones sending a free kick over the bar from a prominent position.
With Frater and Hawkins switching roles up from St Neots looked dangerous on the break at the start of the second half and Frater shot wide when he should had levelled the scores after neat work by Meechan. Chippenham then produced a good spell of attacking play that rendered several chances.A Greg Tindle header from a Pook corner was deflected wide of goal, Luke Ballinger fired the resultant corner over the bar and Guthrie steered a free kick wide. St Neots needed to pep up their game and so on the hour Guy Mailancol was introduced replacing Isaac Galliford. He was quickly in action returning a Hawkins corner to the far post where the unmarked Frater saw his header rebound from the woodwork. Now St Neots began to press but home keeper Kauppinen dominated his penalty area collecting crosses and dealing with shots from Hawkins and Mat Mitchel-King. Danny Gay made a fine save with his legs to deny Ashan Holgate and then after 72 minutes Hawkins was wrestled to the ground but no penalty was given.The perpetrator of the tackle Greg Tindle injured his back and was stretched off after a six minutes delay.St Neots then had much the better of the last ten minutes and were rewarded seven minutes from time when Frater headed home a Mailancol cross with the home side clearly looking to waste time.The draw was well deserved but St Neots must start to convert those draws into three points still trailing the league leaders by four points.

Rugby Borough are the seventh of the nine clubs in our league this season that we shall be entertaining for the first time. They are relative newcomers to the game having been established in 1994 which was the 105th year of St Neots Town’s existence. However, their impact on the game has been significant for they have already won four league titles and a cup final victory as they have made their way into the record books (details elsewhere in the programme).They were promoted from the South Midlands League at the start of the current season and have found life challenging. Currently sixteenth in the league table well clear of the clubs below them they have just one away league victory to their credit at Bugbrooke, which coincidentally where we travel to next weekend. They play on a fine new facility with a 4G pitch where we managed to record the narrowest of victories at the end of September. Rugby twice led in a very competitive match but a goal from Tommy Reynolds and two late goals from James Hatch – the second just eight minutes from time saw our lads return home with all three points. Last Saturday Rugby were beaten 2-1 at home by Easington Sports after they had led by a goal to nil at half time.
Rugby Borough have been very unfortunate with cup draws this season with six of their seven cup matches coming away from home. However, that run has seen some of their best performances with FA Cup victories at Tividale, Walsall Wood, and FC Stratford. They were also beaten in two penalty shoot-outs – at Leicester Nirvana in the League Cup and at Worcester City in the FA Vase,

St Neots returned to the top of the league table with this workmanlike if not impressive victory over visitors Haverhill Borough. They had to work hard for the points especially in the second half when the visitors staged a determined comeback after a rather pallid first half display.However, second placed Deeping Rangers with matches in hand are still firm title favourites.
There was a slow start with St Neots unable to capitalise on clear territorial superiority. It was 19 minutes before there was a serious shot on target and then visiting keeper Harry Humpage saved well from Caleb Wright. Just one minute later Frankie Webster spurned a glorious chance firing high over the bar but after 23 minutes St Neots went ahead as Caleb Wright scored his seventh goal of the campaign with a neat finish. The visitors’ first clear chance fell to Jeffrey Afriyie on the half hour, but he shot across the face of goal and then at the other end the lively Lucca Ugarte-Edwards fired over the bar. The first half ended with the best save of the match from Humpage to deny Wright a second goal after good work by Toby Pendrick.
The visitors started the second half in a more positive way and home keeper Alex Bent saved well from Kyle Markwell. However, after 54 minutes the lead was increased when Lucca Ugarte-Edwards burst into the area to be upended and from the resultant penalty award he added to St Neots lead. Undeterred the visitors persevered and nine minutes later won a penalty of their own when Danny Lively was fouled and it was he who netted from the spot. The same visiting player then went clear on goal but shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Visiting substitute Lennie Brindley squandered a great chance top level the scores and his side paid the penalty when defender Joel Jolly confirmed St Neots victory two minutes from time with a goal from a corner.

Former St Neots striker Neo Richard-Noel returned to haunt his former colleagues with a fine individual second half goal to steal all three points in a tightly fought encounter. The result ended St Neots magnificent run of league results than has extended to fifteen matches undefeated since they were beaten at Wellingborough on 11th November last year. However, despite that outstanding run of form, the competitive nature of the division has left St Neots in fourth place in the league table – just the same where they were four months ago! With a run of fixtures against the top sides in the Division behind them St Neots must now redouble their efforts in their final seven league matches to earn a top five finish and a berth in the end of season play off matches. Manager Cameron Mawer made just one change in the team starting line-up returning fir again Rob Parker to the defence at the expense of Dammy Nickels.
St Neots began in a positive vein with full back Murphy Culkin sending a free kick across the face of goal and Jordan Brown having a shot blocked after good work by Chris Tavernier. Then in their first attack of note the visitors took the lead after ten minutes as Jessi Obeng was allowed to find his way through a square lying defence to put the visitors in front. Five minutes later Connor Furlong who had just recovered from an injury in the midweek match at Daventry, limped off to be replaced by Harvey Williams after his injury break but unfortunately, he only last five minutes before a heavy tackle saw the St Neots substitute substituted with Israel Ajana introduced.Around that period St Neots struggled to put together any threatening attacks but after 28 minutes they were level as skipper James Hatch set up Chris Tavernier for a magnificently struck equaliser that will be a contender for goal of the season. Just before half time Jordan Brown cut in from the left but saw his shot deflected for a corner.
The second half began with two good efforts by home skipper James Hatch both gathered by the visiting keeper but then on the break Neo RichardNoel took on the home defence before unleashing a fierce cross shot that went in off the far post to restore Wellingborough’s lead. In reply, Rhys Thorpe volleyed over the bar after good work by Rob Parker and that was his last involvement as he was replaced by substitute Michael Amaeshike. “Rugby Borough FC as it is now, began life in 1994 under the name of Rugby Town Junior Football Club, and it was the Junior club who masterminded the development of our home ground facilities at Kilsby Lane.
The site, which is 35 acres, contains 2 full size 3G Astro pitches, 2 medium Astro pitches, and 17 grass pitches. For season 2023/24 over 70 teams will train and play at the site.
The forward vision of the club enabled Rugby Borough FC senior section to be set up in 2017/18 with the management team of Darran Tank, Ady Fuller and Danny Finlay, who between them had many years of non-league experience.
After being accepted into the Leicestershire Senior League Division 1 we became champions in our very first season, and were promoted to the Premier Division for 2018/19
The new season saw Borough win the Premier Division title, but promotion was denied because of a local planning decision delay, preventing us from meeting the ground standards required in the allocated timeframe.
Although the 2019/20 and 20/21 seasons were curtailed by the pandemic there were some major changes going on behind the scenes, culminating in the Junior Boys and Girls, and Senior Men and Women’s sections unifying, and taking the name Rugby Borough Football Club.
In 2022
Liam O`Neill was welcomed to the club to as Head of the Rugby Borough Academy of Football, with students aged from 16 to 19 playing, training and being educated at Kilsby Lane. This move has allowed the club to enter the National League U19 Alliance and the Midland Floodlit Youth League

Borough fully focussed and ready for the 2021/22 season won the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division under the leadership of Dan Carter and Kiel Mullen. With the ground now up to standard, promotion to the Spartan South Midlands Division 1 and step 6 of the non-league pyramid was finally achieved. Promotion to step 5 was achieved at the first attempt, via the playoffs, having finished third in the league during the 2022/23 season.
We look forward to visiting and meeting other clubs in the United Counties League Premier Division South for the 2023/24 campaign.”
