2023 Saint Ignatius' College Foundation Impact Report

Page 1

Welcome Looking ahead, the future of our College brims with promise and opportunity. Students, parents, old scholars, and our broader College community are poised to shape our path forward in unprecedented ways.

The Foundation’s steadfast commitment to philanthropic engagement aligns with the efforts of the College Board and Leadership Team. Our donors are invaluable companions, enabling wider access to an Ignatian education in partnership with the Bursary program, as well as continuing to enrich contemporary learning spaces across our three campuses.

At the heart of the Foundation lies a clear mission: to foster a culture of giving that ignites our community’s passion for investing in the future of our students and staff. Your financial support propels the College towards greatness, allowing us to collectively experience the profound joy of giving back. Your ongoing generosity empowers the Foundation to bestow a transformative Jesuit education upon future generations of students.

Through our deep involvement with the College, we’ve witnessed remarkable growth and evolution in its size, ethos, and spirit. Your contributions pave the way for the construction of new facilities, shaping a forward-looking and vibrant learning environment. We extend heartfelt gratitude to our donors, whose generosity has been especially impactful during the challenges of COVID and economic downturn. Recognising that many support various worthy causes, we deeply appreciate your inclusion of Saint Ignatius’ College in your annual giving endeavours.

The Ignatian Bursary Fund serves as a beacon of hope, offering vital financial aid to students who might otherwise be unable to access a Jesuit education. In 2023, the College proudly awarded 10 bursaries, each gift transcending mere financial assistance. These bursaries unlock doors to personal growth and opportunities for families in need, made possible only through your generosity.

Thank you for making a profound difference in the lives of our students and the future trajectory of our beloved College.

Lauren Brooks, Principal

Peter Hosking SJ (Class of 1974), Rector

Sean Keenihan (Class of 1988), Chair of College Board

History of the Foundation Board

The Saint Ignatius’ College Foundation Board was established in 1989 with a focus on raising funds for the advancement of the College’s capital works building programs and the Ignatian Bursary Fund.

However, the philanthropic journey for Saint Ignatius’ College commenced many decades before, when the College opened in 1951.

The Fathers’ Club and Mothers’ Club played a very important role in the life of the school, hosting gala balls, dinners, cocktail parties and fundraising events at both the Norwood and Athelstone campuses. It was their decades of hard work and dedication that laid the groundwork for today’s Foundation Board.

We also recognise the generosity of two brothers, James Ryan and Robert Ryan, and their cousin, Catherine Atkinson, who in 1964 offered some of their land allotments in Athelstone to the Jesuits. This generous gift enabled the Jesuits to purchase land in 1965 to establish the Senior School.

This legacy is a wonderful reminder that we have all benefited from those who have come before us, and giving is at the heart of the greater good.

“Giving is not just about making a donation, it’s about making a difference.”
Kathy Calvin, former President and CEO, United Nations Foundation

Chair of Foundation

In 2023, the Saint Ignatius’ College Foundation commemorated 35 years of dedicated service.

On behalf of the Foundation Board, I wish to thank all supporters who share our vision and generously contribute to our cause. Your donations empower us to foster avenues for students, their families, and our broader community to sustain Saint Ignatius’ College in delivering exceptional learning experiences, both now and in the years to come. In 2023, donors rallied to achieve a grand sum of $145,555.00 in support of the Foundation’s mission.

Within this report, you will encounter a glimpse of the profound impact made possible by your support. Yet, our work is ongoing. We deeply appreciate the steadfast commitment of all donors and supporters to ensuring that every child receives not only education but also friendship, support, and access to an enriching learning environment, now and in the future.

Serving on this Board has been a privilege, and I extend my sincere gratitude for your generous and unwavering belief in the Foundation’s enduring dedication to the Saint Ignatius’ College community.

Building & Bursary Funds

Building Fund

The College Foundation Board is supported by the College’s Advancement Office to nurture a culture of philanthropy among the community.

The College and the Foundation recognise that the generous support of the Ignatian community has been of immeasurable value in helping to fund bursaries and major capital works projects, and that it is only with these contributions and gifts that the development of College facilities and the provision of bursaries can continue.

The College Foundation has overseen the fundraising for the following major capital works projects at the Junior and Senior Schools:

Holy Family Building

Ignatius Early Years

Mary MacKillop Library

Junior School Tuckshop Redevelopment

Mary Glowrey Centre

Bursary Fund

Chapel of the Holy Name

St Edmund Campion Building (Campion Library & Senior Years Centre)

St Peter Faber Building (Music & Drama)

Caroline Chisholm Building

Andrea Pozzo Centre for Art, Design & Technology

It is a deeply held value and tradition of the College that an Ignatian education remains available for all people, despite their financial means, background or experiences.

Through the Bursary Fund sustained by our community, the College supports many students and families each year, ensuring they benefit from a Jesuit education and receive the educational opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach. Recipients are chosen by the Principal, Rector, and members of the Bursary Committee.

The Foundation Board oversees several specific bursaries, including the Ignatius Early Years Bursary, Indigenous Bursary, the Roma Flynn Bursary for Music, and the Bento de Goes Bursary for Refugee and First Peoples students.

“The power of education cannot be underplayed. I am deeply grateful for my education and the opportunities it has afforded me; it is as simple as that. In leaving a bequest to Saint Ignatius’ College I am confident more students will be provided opportunities to access the education I received. I know that in the years since my departure, the College continues to shape future thinkers, leaders, and educators - men and women for others . My gift, my bequest seeks to support this mission.” Anonymous Bequest Companion

An educational bequest can shape the lives of young people, empowering them to positively influence their communities and the futures of their own families.

The Saint Ignatius’ College bequest program offers you the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, ensuring that future generations of Saint Ignatius’ College students benefit from enriched opportunities and resources. It also improves opportunities for families who, due to their financial situation, face challenges in pursuing an Ignatian education for their children.

By leaving a bequest in your will, you can continue to have an influence on the College community into the future. A gift of this kind will continue to shape the College’s identity and impact for years to come.

After taking care of your family members and loved ones, please consider leaving a bequest to support the future work of the Saint Ignatius’ College Foundation. The Foundation offers discretion and confidential discussions on the lasting impact a generous gift can have when you direct a gift to the College through your estate plan.

To learn more about how you can support the work of the Foundation or leave a bequest, please email the Principal, Mrs Lauren Brooks at foundation@ignatius.sa.edu.au or call 8334 9300.

The Andrea Pozzo Centre for Art, Design, and Technology

The Andrea Pozzo Centre for Art, Design, and Technology at the Senior School, Athelstone campus, is the new hub for current and future generations of art, design and technology students. In this exciting space, our students will benefit from deep, real-world learning experiences, which will foster creative and critical thinking and will empower and inspire future entrepreneurs.

Demonstrating our commitment to innovation, this modern, double-storey centre facilitates cross-curriculum collaboration and will give students the opportunity to work with the latest technologies.

The sophisticated and timeless design by Architects Ink takes direction from elements of our College’s existing architecture but with a fresh and thoughtful perspective. The functional design provides flexible working spaces and clear sight lines. The building maximises natural light and provides views of the hills and surrounding nature. Heavy consideration was given to sustainability and designers worked mindfully to incorporate sustainable building practices.

The new Art, Design, and Technology Building for the Senior School Campus is designed to ignite innovation. Intentionally refined, the building highlights the beauty in simplicity, allowing the creativity of the students’ work to be the focal point. It celebrates art, design and technology through a contemporary yet timeless building that showcases the College’s progressive thinking.
Marco

Thank you to all our generous donors - the Andrea Pozzo Centre marks an exciting new era and is an investment in our College’s future. It will benefit our students and staff for generations to come.

The fact that we will have a technology and design workshop in close proximity will mean there will be further opportunity for mixed media explorations, especially for 3D work. All the art, design, and technology teachers working in one area, instead of multiple areas within the school, will facilitate team teaching and sharing of skills and resources.
