APRECIA LA EUCARISTÍA

For centuries, today’s feast was called Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) and was observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. In many countries it has been moved to Sunday, so that more people may participate in its celebration. In its present form, the liturgy of this day focuses our attention on the meaning of the Eucharist that we celebrate so often.

Today’s reading from Genesis tells how “Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine” and prayed over Abram. Though it took place nearly two thousand years before Jesus, this event has long been used by the Church as an ancient foreshadowing of the Eucharist.

The reading from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians is the same one we hear proclaimed on Holy Thursday, retelling the story of the first blessing and sharing of bread and wine at the Last Supper. Luke’s tale of the miraculous feeding of the crowd in today’s Gospel is also clearly intended to evoke the Eucharist. Thus today’s readings give us three opportunities to deepen our appreciation of the Body and Blood of Christ. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

SMALL CHURCH COMMUNITY Has God been working in a special way in your life lately? Come hear the good news proclaimed with other Catholic Christians in our parish! Our Small Church Community (SCC) will gather on Wednesday evening, June 12th from 7 to 8:45 pm at Sharon and Bruce Hatch’s home. We will meet for prayer, scripture readings, faith sharing and fellowship. Whether you have been to one of our SCCs or not, please feel welcome to join us and bring along a friend if you like! All are invited. For more information or to RSVP, contact Sharon Hatch at (775) 832-2616. Testimony for SCC: “In the past, faith was a very private matter. Most people in the church had no one to listen to them try to sort out how God might be speaking in their lives. In Small Church Community we can openly discuss our doubts, fears and happiness with others who might share our same feelings, knowing we are all together to help one another. For me, this opportunity helps a great deal, in fact, it is almost indispensable. The honest sharing—not agreement—but sharing, has helped us to be aware of God in different ways in our own lives..” (P. Barth) Pg. 6

Peace and Justice / La Paz y La Justicia ISSUES of PEACE and JUSTICE: Pope John Paul II wrote many of the Church’s documents that make up the body of Catholic Social Teaching we often quote. His was a truly universal vision for a universal Church. As we contemplate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ today, Pope John Paul’s Sollicitudo Rei Socialis: On Social Concern has words that remind us of our universal human bonds: “[A]wareness of the common fatherhood of God, of the brotherhood of all in Christ – ‘children in the Son’ – and of the presence and life-giving action of the Holy Spirit will bring to our vision of the world a new criterion for interpreting it. Beyond human and natural bonds, already so close and strong, there is discerned in the light of faith, a new model of the unity of the human race, which must ultimately inspire our solidarity. This supreme model of unity, which is a reflection of the intimate life of God, on God in three Persons, is what we Christians mean by the word communion. This specifically Christian communion, jealously preserved, extended and enriched with the Lord’s help, is the soul of the Church’s vocation to be ‘sacrament,’ … Solidarity therefore must play its part in the realization of this divine plan, both on the level of individuals and on the level of national and international society. The ‘evil mechanisms’ and ‘structures of sin’ of which we have spoken can be overcome only through the exercise of the human and Christian solidarity to which the Church calls us and which she tirelessly promotes. Only in this way can such positive energies be fully released for the benefit of development and peace” (#40). We must ponder this “new model of the unity of the human race” as we modernize this country’s immigration laws and adopt an attitude of solidarity in our Church. See Justice for Immigrants, http://www.justiceforimmigrants.org/ for information from the USCCB on this topic.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…
