MISION

Today’s first reading from Isaiah was occasioned by the return of the Jewish people from exile. The prophet visualizes the Holy City as a mother welcoming her children home. The people may now look forward to prosperity and comfort. In this post-Pentecostal season, the Church attributes this sense of fulfillment to the Holy Spirit.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote If ever there was a hot-button issue, it was pushed last week. In light of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision regarding same-sex marriage, I wish to share with you my pastoral thoughts on how this impacts us as a Catholic community. My take: the Supreme Court’s two major decisions will change our American culture but they will not change our Catholic Church’s teachings on the sacredness of the sacrament of marriage. In short, one is a civil matter and the other is a Church matter. It is important to remember that these recent decisions were based on the question of how the Constitution applies to the complex situation where the state and federal governments differ in their laws. It is equally important to remember that the justices’ decision—whether you agree with it or not—was not based on determining the truth of marriage, although that is how it may be perceived. With these decisions, a bright and bold line between civil marriage and sacramental marriage has now been drawn. While it is true that the state can define civil marriage, the state cannot define our Church’s definition of the sacrament of marriage. The sacrament of marriage in the Catholic Church is clearly defined as one man and one woman who pledge themselves to each other forever. For Catholics, marriage is a sacrament, instituted by Christ to give grace. Regardless of which side of this civil ruling you stand on, the ruling does remind us of other essential teachings of Christ: the Catholic Church teaches that all people are to be treated with dignity, kindness and respect. We, the Church, the people of God, still have the responsibility to teach the Gospel Values and encourage all people to live out the teachings of Christ—regardless of their sexual orientation. As one who does not support same sex marriage, I know that I have to face the challenge to compassionately deal with those who disagree with me personally and in the Faith I profess. I immediately think of one person to whom I am currently ministering. He is a gay man whose struggles with depression, anxiety, suicide, addiction and failed relationships in early life all stemmed from a deep and abiding sense that he was not OK. As he stated, “it isn’t OK for me to gay.” Part of this man’s emotional and spiritual recovery was based on his own admission to his gay orientation. Another part of his recovery will now include the fact that our political, social and legal institutions have created a space and society where gay relationships are recognized as OK. But for him, there is still a part that is missing—he wants his gay relationship recognized by the Church. He struggles with the sincerity of Cardinal Dolan’s words, when the Cardinal said to the gay community, “You are loved and welcomed in the Church, because we, as the people of God are all church.” He doesn’t feel welcome. He is conflicted and I understand. He doesn’t like me telling him that his sexual orientation is one thing, while acting upon it is another. So, we agree to respect each other, even though we do not agree with each other. We agree to disagree. In other words, we both practice what Jesus taught—the virtue of tolerance. Pg. 6

A la luz de la histórica decisión del Tribunal Supremo sobre matrimonio de personas del mismo sexo, deseo compartir con ustedes mis reflexiones pastorales sobre cómo nos afecta como comunidad católica. Mi postura: la Corte Suprema de dos importantes decisiones va a cambiar nuestra cultura Americana, sino no van a cambiar nuestra Iglesia Católica de las enseñanzas de la sacralidad del sacramento del matrimonio. En resumen, es una cuestión de derecho civil y la otra es una Iglesia. Es importante recordar que estas decisiones recientes se basan en la cuestión de cómo la Constitución se aplica a la compleja situación en la que los gobiernos estatal y federal difieren en sus leyes. Para los católicos, el matrimonio es un sacramento instituido por Cristo para dar gracia. Independientemente de qué lado de esta sentencia civil, ustedes se encuentran en la sentencia no nos recuerdan otras enseñanzas esenciales de Cristo: la Iglesia Católica enseña que todas las personas son de ser tratadas con dignidad, respeto y amabilidad. Nosotros, la Iglesia, el pueblo de Dios, todavía tienen la responsabilidad de enseñar los valores del Evangelio y animar a todas las personas a vivir las enseñanzas de Cristo, independientemente de su orientación sexual. The charter mandated certain activities which are to be operative in all dioceses. Among the requirements of the charter is the education and training of all employees and those volunteers who may have contact with children through the Virtus program, Protecting God’s Children. The program trains its participants to recognize the warning signs of sexual abuse and to respond appropriately. In protecting God’s Children, our children, all of us need to become more aware of the dangers that our youth face each day. This program is designed to help us help others.

Evangelization efforts among African Americans, Native Americans, Eskimo and Aleut communities, churches and schools, are made possible by your support of the Black and Indian Missions Office. Your contributions support missionaries here in the United States who are working and teaching in these communities. In addition, your assistance provides opportunities for a sold Catholic education in our Indian and Black Catholic mission schools, allows the purchase of catechetical materials and bibles, and provides for the formation of lay leadership, to name just a few ways the collection supports evangelization. This collection is more than your monetary support; it is an opportunity to evangelize and further the missionary cause of bringing the Gospel to our African-American and NativeAmerican brothers and sisters.
