A PERSONAL RESPONSE OF FAITH Today’s Gospel starts with a conversation with which Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem—and the cross. As his followers, we strive to march with him, even to the cross. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians tells us that we who have been baptized have “clothed” ourselves with Christ. Being one with Christ, we must no longer discriminate according to nationality or race, according to social status, according to gender. The prophet Zechariah, centuries before anyone heard of Jesus, spoke of how the people find God’s message uncomfortable, and so turn against the messengers. Later, though, the people awaken to the realization of what they have done and are moved to repentance. Thus, they are always welcomed back by God, who always gives us grace to do the right thing, however difficult it may be. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

RESPUESTA PERSONAL DE FE Después de pasar la Cuaresma, la Pascua y los días posteriores a esta fiesta, entramos de nuevo en el Tiempo Ordinario. Este año las lecturas del Evangelio son tomadas de san Lucas, comenzando hoy con una conversación con la que Jesús comienza su camino a Jerusalén –y a la cruz. Como seguidores suyos, procuramos marchar con él, incuso hasta la cruz. La carta de Pablo a los gálatas nos dice que nosotros los bautizados debemos “revestirnos” de Cristo. Al ser uno con Cristo, no debemos hacer discriminaciones de raza, nacionalidad, clases social o género. El profeta Zacarías, muchos siglos antes de que nadie oyera hablar de Jesús, explicaba cómo el pueblo iba a rechazar el mensaje de Dios, encontrándolo incómodo, y se volverían contra los mensajeros. Sin embargo, luego la gente se daría cuenta de lo que habían hecho y se arrepentirían. Y Dios los acogería de nuevo, pues siempre nos concede la gracia para hacer lo correcto, sin importar lo difícil que sea.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote Next Sunday, June 30th, we will celebrate with Bishop Calvo, the Fifth Anniversary of the renovation of our Church at the 11:00 Liturgy. We hope that you and your family can join us for this Mass that will be followed by an outdoor Champagne brunch. St. Francis of Assisi was officially established as a parish of the Diocese of Reno in 1965, with Masses being celebrated in local casinos, the golf course and a home on Kelly Drive. It was in 1969 that the original Church was completed thanks to some very dedicated, committed and self-sacrificing parishioners who volunteered their time, talent and treasures to build the Church. The original Church faced Mt. Rose Hwy. In 1980, the Church underwent a renovation in which the sanctuary, altar and pews were turned around to face the lake. In 2006, a building committee, made up of long-time parishioners, was established to study the needs and scope of bringing the building up to code and safety regulations. While the Church appeared structurally sound, this study revealed that it had been infected with ants which had been eating away at the base of the foundation holding up the sanctuary. There were numerous dead animals in the attic, basement and walls of the building. The plumbing and electrical work was in need of major upgrading. It was the strong recommendation of the building committee that the Church be renovated to be in total compliance with existing fire and safety codes. A survey of the parishioners was then taken to determine how many would agree on pursuing the project. A full 95% of the parishioners supported a complete renovation, with the other 5% wanting to simply remove the outdated paneling and replace the popcorn ceiling and orange carpet. The restoration was placed under the patronage of our Blessed Mother. It was like a miracle unfolding before our eyes! The Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, Building Committee and Interior Design Committee volunteered their time to work with the contractor and architect to design and renovate the Church. Mind you, all of this was accomplished through a discernment process that was very time-consuming. A successful Capital Campaign was initiated, raising 5.2 million dollars in pledges within the year. After the 11:00 Mass in July of 2007, we completely moved out of the Church and office spaces. With mixed emotions, parishioners carefully removed candleholders, the tabernacle, the Stations of the Cross, the original altar, vestments, altar linens, and the crucifix and stored them in their homes. The stained glass windows and our statue of The Resurrection were removed by the builders and stored safely. We risked conducting a liturgy of thanksgiving on Thanksgiving weekend as well as celebrating our Christmas liturgy of 2007 in the shell of the building—even though we had no heat or pews! Parishioners stepped over extension cords and sat on sawhorses as they personally experienced and saw the progress of the renovation. One of the parishioners commented, “This is a great way to experience the hardship of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem.” By the end of May 2008 we moved again; this time back into our current renovated worship space. Like our parish patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we heard Christ’s call to “rebuild my Church.” The unselfish dedication towards the physical rebuilding of our Church continues with the spiritual rebuilding of our parish community. Our Church is attractive and welcoming, and focuses on living and fulfilling both our mission and vision statements. Our renovated Church has, and continues to revitalize our faith and Catholic identity here in North Lake Tahoe. This deserves to be celebrated. Again, I pray that you and your family will help us and join in the celebration next Sunday.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote El próximo Domingo, 30 de junio, celebraremos con el Obispo Calvo, el quinto aniversario de la renovación de nuestra Iglesia en la Misa de la 11:00. Esperamos que usted y su familia pueda unirse a nosotros. Después de la Misa habrá comida con champán al aire libre. La Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís fue oficialmente reconocida como una parroquia de la diócesis de Reno en 1965 con la comunidad que celebraba en los casinos locales, en el campo de golf y en la casa de Kelly. Fue en 1969 que la Iglesia original se completó gracias a algunos feligreses muy dedicados, comprometidos y abnegados que ofrecieron voluntariamente su tiempo, talento y tesoro para la construcción de la Iglesia. The charter mandates certain activities which are to be operative in all dioceses. Among the requirements of the charter is the education and training of all employees and those volunteers who may have contact with children, through use of the Virtus program, “Protecting God’s Children.” The program trains its participants to recognize the warning signs of sexual abuse and to respond appropriately. In protecting God’s Children —our children— all of us need to become more aware of the dangers our youth face each day. This program is designed to help us help others.

Knights of Columbus Hispanic Membership Drive and Informational Dinner The Knights of Columbus invite all Parishioners to attend a Free Dinner on Sunday, June 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. The dinner will be held directly after the Spanish Mass and will include information about the Knights of Columbus and our core principals of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. This year, The Knights are offering “free dues” to all new members along with incorporating bilingual meetings and events within our Council. Please bring the whole family and join us for dinner on June 23 at 6:00 p.m.

Stewardship & Community / Administración y Comunidad U.S. Catholics prepare to open Fortnight for Freedom: The U.S. bishops have convoked the second annual Fortnight for Freedom, a two-week period of prayer and action, to address many current challenges to religious liberty. All across the nation, Catholics will be joining with their fellow citizens of good will, who share concerns about religious liberty, in spiritual, educational and advocacy programs. First and foremost, however, the Fortnight for Freedom is a moment of prayer...a Catholic response to a concern that touches the life of the whole nation. The Fortnight is also an opportunity for Catholics and other citizens concerned about religious liberty to inform, educate—and sometimes, to set the record straight about what the Church teaches and expects of the faithful in the public square, and from the civil authorities. The Fortnight for Freedom officially opened on Friday, June 21st, with Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption, celebrated by the Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore, who heads the USCCB’s religious liberty advocacy. Collection of nonperishable foods on the last weekend of each month helps support this mission. Issues of Peace and Justice: We see Jesus “praying in solitude” in today’s gospel, and then moving from that prayer to thoughts of His work in this world, and reminding us all that we, too, are called to follow him, taking up our cross daily. “Love faces a vast field of work and the Church is eager to make her contribution with her social doctrine, which concerns the whole person and is addressed to all people. So many needy brothers and sisters are waiting for help, so many who are oppressed are waiting for justice, so many who are unemployed are waiting for a job, so many peoples are waiting for respect. ‘How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their head? The scenario of poverty can extend indefinitely, if in addition to its traditional forms we think of its newer patterns. These latter often affect financially affluent sectors and groups which are nevertheless threatened by despair at the lack of meaning in their lives, by drug addiction, by fear of abandonment in old age or sickness, by marginalization or social discrimination ... And how can we remain indifferent to the prospect of an ecological crisis which is making vast areas of our planet uninhabitable and hostile to humanity? Or by the problems of peace, so often threatened by the specter of catastrophic wars? Or by contempt for the fundamental human rights of so many people, especially children’” (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, #5)?
