Scholarship Programme Overview

Scholarships are awarded to pupils entering Form 7 (11+) and Form 9 (13+) from the current St. Edmund’s Form 6 and Form 8 cohort, as well as to pupils applying externally.

St. Edmund’s celebrates and encourages the talents of our pupils and scholarships are offered in Academia, Art, Drama, Music, Performing Arts and Sport.

Our Scholars are expected to demonstrate outstanding achievement, enthusiasm and potential in their chosen field, as well as participate fully in the life of the school.

Opportunities exist inside and outside the classroom for our highest achievers to explore their strengths to a deeper level, as well as further develop their talents.

All our Scholars are expected to be excellent ambassadors for the whole school and their departments, as well as demonstrate ongoing dedication to their area of specialism.

Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Governors based on the recommendation of the Headmaster. Some Scholarship Awards are honorary but others come with a small remission on annual tuition fees.

All scholars have the same status and responsibilities.

SCHOLARSHIPS

ACADEMIC

St. Edmund’s is looking for pupils who enjoy academic study and are keen to stretch themselves beyond the curriculum. Academic Scholarship candidates should display intellectual curiosity, be diligent in their approach to their studies and go above and beyond where they can.

For external candidates the formal entrance assessments (English and Maths) in Form 6 for 11+ candidates and in Form 8 for 13+ candidates will be used to identify children suitable for the Academic Scholarships in Form 7 and Form 9.

For internal candidates, class assessments in maths and English in the Michaelmas term of Form 6 and Form 8 will be used to identify pupils suitable for an Academic Scholarship Award.

No application forms are required.

ART

SCHOLARSHIPS 04

St. Edmund’s has an excellent Art provision which includes painting, drawing, print-making, pottery and sculpture.

We are looking for 11+ and 13+ Art Scholarship candidates with a keen attitude who show a high level of passion, knowledge and talent for Art and who will act as ambassadors for our Art Department. Candidates should demonstrate the power of observation and imagination, as well as possess high technical ability and creativity.

Successful Art Scholars will be expected to immerse themselves in the subject, attend Art Club, as well as regularly enter art competitions. There is a high expectation for Art Scholars to choose GCSE Art as an option in Form 9.

Assessment At the time of application, candidates should digitally submit a personal Art portfolio, showing a range of media (any three-dimensional pieces should be presented in photographic form). After consideration, selected applicants will be invited to the Art Scholarship Assessment Day and will be assessed during a timed observational still-life drawing session and an interview with the Head of the Art Department.

Assessment 11+ (Form 7 entry) should prepare one monologue (individual speech) taken from a published play, while 13 + (Form 9 entry) candidates should prepare two contrasting monologues. The monologue(s) should be either classical (pre 1950’s) or contemporary (post 1950’s) and can be of any genre eg. comedy, drama etc, but should be performed without props.

Candidates will be assessed on both their vocal and physical skills, so some form of movement within the speech is important. They will also be assessed on their interpretation of the character and the speech.

Both 11+ and 13+ Drama Scholarship candidates will participate in a short group workshop focusing on improvisation skills. They will also be expected to critique a recent theatrical production for discussion during their interview with the Head of Drama.

CANDIDATES SHOULD CHOOSE EITHER DRAMA OR PERFORMING ARTS IF THEY ARE INTERESTED IN BOTH PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIPS.

DRAMA

Drama Scholarship candidates should have experience of acting on a stage and in public performance and they will be expected to audition for and take a leading role in school and class productions as well as in our public speaking programme. We reward pupils who show promise, potential and passion for drama and it is anticipated that Drama Scholars will pursue their passion for Drama and Theatre Studies to GCSE and beyond. There will be opportunities for Drama Scholars to watch and learn directly from industry professionals by visiting theatres both in London and locally to watch relevant performances.

Drama Scholarships at St. Edmund’s are awarded to pupils who display an outstanding interest and talent for performance. Candidates should be willing to take full advantage of all opportunities to participate in Drama at St. Edmund’s.

SCHOLARSHIPS

MUSIC

Our Music Department is a vibrant department which aims to provide keen musicians with many opportunities to perform, as well as develop their talents.

We are looking for scholarship candidates who have a genuine enthusiasm and passion for music. Candidates aspiring to secure a Music Scholarship are encouraged to showcase their musical ability across a diverse range of instruments. We are

Assessment We offer two distinct categories of Music Scholarships for candidates at 11+ and 13+; GENERAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS (Classical Music Discipline or Contemporary Music Discipline) and CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

GENERAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS (Classical or Contemporary) General Music Scholar applicants are invited to showcase their talent with two contrasting pieces performed on two different instruments (voice can also count as one instrument) either from the classical music repertoire or contemporary music repertoire (jazz, rock and popular styles). Candidates who can demonstrate exceptional talent and musicality in just one instrument will also be considered.

All candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge of their audition pieces e.g. composer, time period, producers. Audition pieces must be performed with a piano accompaniment (where appropriate) and candidates must ensure they bring their own instruments and sheet music to the audition. Candidates will also undergo assessments on performance technique, expressiveness and musicality.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS 11+ (Form 7 entry): Grade 4 (or Grade 3 achieved and working towards Grade 4) 13+ (Form 9 entry): Grade 5 (or Grade 4 achieved and working towards Grade 5)

CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS Our Choral Scholarships emphasise vocal excellence. Candidates are required to perform two contrasting vocal pieces suitable for choral singing, such as folk songs, hymns, choral works, art songs or classical music pieces. Each vocal piece should be sung with a piano accompaniment – no backing tracks or ‘a capella’. Musical theatre and popular music repertoires should be avoided. Candidates will also undergo assessments on performance technique, expressiveness and musicality.

This category is tailored for those who thrive in the choral ensemble setting and aspire to lead through their vocal abilities. Candidates should send their sheet music to the Music Department in advance of their audition as well as bring it in on the day.

All candidates (General Music and Choral) will take part in an interview with the Director of Music, designed to gauge their passion for music and their promise as musicians.

SCHOLARSHIPS

PERFORMING ARTS

Performing Arts Scholarships are awarded to pupils who display an outstanding passion for performance and are willing to take full advantage of all opportunities to participate in Performing Arts at St. Edmund’s.

Performing Arts Scholarship candidates should demonstrate involvement in Performing Arts at their current school or in clubs outside of school. They should be able to demonstrate a passion and talent for performing and show the potential to develop in their chosen fields. They must have a genuine interest and

enthusiasm for their disciplines and show a positive attitude, creative approach, and commitment to performing. There will be opportunities for Performing Arts Scholars to watch and learn directly from industry professionals by visiting theatres both in London and locally to watch relevant performances.

Assessment Candidates applying for a Performing Arts Scholarship are required to demonstrate performance versatility in a range of disciplines, specifically drama, dance and singing. A combination of two these disciplines are required to be considered for a scholarship.

DANCE: Candidates should prepare a oneto-two-minute dance from a performance in a style of their choice e.g. musical or ballet.

DRAMA: 11+ (Form 7 entry) candidates should prepare one monologue (individual speech) taken from a published play, while 13 + (Form 9 entry) candidates should prepare two contrasting monologues. The monologue(s) should be either classical (pre1950’s) or contemporary (post-1950’s) and can be of any genre e.g. comedy or drama, but should be performed without props.

SINGING: Candidates will be expected to perform one song of their choice. This can be of any style but must demonstrate their ability to ‘perform’ whilst singing.

Performing Arts require concentration, discipline, imagination, and passion, as well as talent. Therefore, we look at how candidates create, perform, and respond in the audition, as well as their attitude and approach.

CANDIDATES SHOULD CHOOSE EITHER DRAMA OR PERFORMING ARTS IF THEY ARE INTERESTED IN BOTH PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIPS. HOWEVER, PUPILS WHO APPLY FOR A PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP MAY ALSO BE CONSIDERED FOR A DRAMA SCHOLARSHIP.

SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS

At St. Edmund’s we offer a wide variety of sporting opportunities, and we hope our Sport Scholars will bring their talent and ability to our school and in turn we will give them the opportunity and environment to excel. Sport Scholars are expected to be positive contributors to sporting life at St. Edmund’s and set an example to the rest of the school through their attitude, behaviour and work ethic towards sport.

St. Edmund’s Sport Scholars are promising athletes and are currently represented in regional, county and national teams across a variety of sports. We are looking for candidates with excellent sporting and leadership ability who are committed to sport.

The expectation is that our Sport Scholars will represent the school in all our core sports on a regular basis, across all three terms throughout the year. St. Edmund’s offers two academic sport options at GCSE level - GCSE Physical Education and Cambridge National Sport Science - which we encourage our Sport Scholars to consider in order to deepen their understanding of sport.

Assessment As part of their application, both 11+ and 13+ candidates will be asked to choose one main sport which they specialise in at a high level.

This should be one of our five core sports – which at St. Edmund’s are Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball and Rugby (boys only).

We expect all participants to be able to show key skills such as; hand-eye coordination, speed, agility, cardiovascular endurance and the ability to transfer and link their dominant skills to other sports.

On the day of the Sport Scholarship assessment, candidates will be assessed on the following: 1. FITNESS A high level of fitness is required. Candidates will be evaluated on their cardiovascular fitness, motor skills, speed, agility and their response to coaching. Assessment methods will include the Illinois Agility Test, the Cooper Run, the Anderson Wall Toss Test, and a Speed Test.

2. SPORT ASSESSMENT Candidates will have the opportunity to showcase essential skills, as well as participate in competitive scenarios within their chosen sport.

3. INTERVIEW We can keen to hear about candidates’ passion for sport, commitment, character, self-discipline and potential for contribution to St. Edmund’s sporting life.

Application Scholarship information will be sent out in the Michaelmas term of Form 6 and Form 8 to those children registered with St. Edmund’s for Form 7 entry (11+) and Form 9 entry (13+) and will include full details on how to apply, as well as the application deadline.

The Scholarship Assessments for Art, Drama, Music, Performing Arts and Sport will take place at the beginning of the Lent term of Form 6 and Form 8.

Academic Scholarships are offered to pupils of outstanding academic distinction and are based on entry assessments for pupils applying externally or on Michalemas term class assessments in maths and English for pupils who are already at St. Edmund’s.

Candidates are welcome to apply for more than one scholarship although candidates should choose either Drama or Performing Arts if they are interested in both performance Scholarships.
